Moogfest 2016 Dates Announced

Published on Jul 14, 2015 Moogfest

"International Festival Exploring The Synthesis of Music, Art and Technology for innovators Around the World.

Leaders from Durham’s civic organizations, cultural institutions, government and business announced earlier today that Moogfest – the internationally acclaimed festival of music, art and technology -- will debut in Durham May 2016. This announcement signals a long-term commitment by festival organizers, reinforcing the exploding technology scene and culture of innovation in the Triangle. The 3 day, 3 night event takes place May 19-22, 2016.

A limited number of Early Bird tickets are now available at Moogfest.com for $99.00.

'Moogfest is a platform for conversation and experimentation with innovative programming that perfectly mirrors Durham’s momentum as a capital of technology, culture and entertainment,' says Emmy Parker, Brand Director at Moog Music.

Moogfest has been a festival of electronic music since 2004, known for presenting performances by early pioneers in electronic music, alongside pop and avant garde experimentalists of today. Previous Moogfest performers include Kraftwerk, Brian Eno, Chic, Massive Attack, Holly Herndon, Flying Lotus, Terry Riley, M83, The Flaming Lips, Suicide, Pet Shop Boys, Grimes, TV On The Radio, MIA, St. Vincent,Tangerine Dream, Keith Emerson, Moderat and Squarepusher.

In celebration of today’s announcement, Moogfest releases 'Translational Drifts: Moogfest Vol. 1,' the first EP in a series of free digital recordings that feature Moogfest artists - past, present and future. Volume 1 showcases five contemporary acts reinterpreting seminal electronic music influencers that have shaped past Moogfest lineups. This premiere installment includes YACHT, ADULT., Julianna Barwick, Moses Sumney and Dan Deacon translating tracks by Devo, Pet Shop Boys, Suicide, Laurie Anderson and Brian Eno. Their renditions pay tribute to a rich history of electronic music, with new sounds that continue to push further into the future.

YACHT, a contributor and previous Moogfest curator, praises the company behind the collaboration, 'We love how Moog brings artists together. The sound of the machines and the culture of the company are like a bridge across genres and generations.

Over the last several years, the festival has evolved to include a mind-expanding conference for creative and technology professionals. In 2014, Moogfest worked with designers and technologists at Google, researchers from the MIT Media Lab, editors from Make Magazine and organizers from the Eyeo Festival (among others) to present panels, workshops and demos at the forefront of art and technology. Presentations by music pioneers Giorgio Moroder, Nile Rodgers, Janelle Monae, and Keith Emerson were accompanied by conversations with inventors and electronic instrument designers Roger Linn and Tom Oberheim, plus Futurama creator David X Cohen. Moogfest also commissioned “Moogfest: Conductar”, a virtual reality app, nominated for two Webby Awards. Moogfest is already developing new programming and plans to bring similar exciting partnerships to Durham in 2016.

The festival’s priority remains a focus on intimate venues for performance and conversation, encouraging the same ambience established in Asheville. Moogfest will activate many of Durham’s downtown event venues and public spaces with a mix of ticketed and free community programming.

Moogfest is a tribute to Dr. Robert Moog and the profound influence his inventions have had on how we hear the world. Over the last sixty years, Bob Moog and Moog Music have pioneered the analog synthesizer and other technology tools for artists. This exchange between engineer and musician is celebrated with a unique festival format, where the creative process is understood as a collaboration among many people, across time and space, in commerce and culture.

Moog Minimoog Voyager Crank - How bad can it get

Published on Jul 14, 2015 Matthias plays

"This time I played the Moog Minimoog Voyager. Everybody I think knows how sweet this synth can sound and how nice and warm leads it creates. But I think the crank side of the Minimoog Voyager lacks attention. Well those of you who know the original Minimoog know that it sounded a lot more aggressive and had more crisp and crackle to the overall sound. I think the Minimoog Voyager is capable of this sound too. But decide on your own. I really like the Minimoog Voyager."

MFOS' Ray Wilson Releases ELECTROLUMINESCENCE

Back in 2010 Ray Wilson posted a video on the making of ELECTROLUMINESCENCE. The release is now available on CDBaby and was composed entirely on his MFOS system.

"I love analog synthesizers and have designed and built my own for years. I own and run the Music From Outer Space synth-diy website where I share my knowledge of analog synthesizers with the world-wide synth-diy community. All sounds on these tracks were created using my hand-made modular synthesizer. Since my modular synthesizer is monophonic I have to build up several tracks to recreate polyphonic music. ELECTROLUMINESCENCE was a fun project and a labor of love. I hope you find these tracks interesting and relaxing. My wife is a very experienced yoga teacher and finds the tracks useful in her yoga practice. Namaste."

"Gargalikis, who often performs as part of the duo, Slope114, has a mellifluous voice that rises above some of the noise sounds from the modular synth, while blending as a high note in longer drones."

"Miss Moist, an Oakland-based electronic musician who describes her music as 'electro candy pop // tropical kitsch'. She combined analog electronics with a Korg Electribe and Mini-Kaoss Pad."

"Jill Fraser performing on her vintage Serge modular synthesizer."

"Mint Park, who performed with an analog modular synthesizer made composed primarily of TipTop Audio modules along with a laptop running Ableton Live!"

CatSynth's own Amanda Chaudhary: "For this set, I brought the full analog modular system, including some recent acquisitions such as the Hexinverter.net Mutant-Hijats – I opened the set with the Hihats controlled by the Make Noise Rene and the Moog Theremini. The Theremini, used exclusively as a CV controller for the modular synth, was the centerpiece of the set as it enabled full embodied performance. I also brought along the Garrahand drum, which works well fed into the Make Noise Echophon."

Multiple Hardware sequenced with G-Stomper over MIDI / G-Stomper Studio 4.3 Mobile App

Published on Jul 14, 2015 G-Stomper Studio for Android

"Multiple Hardware sequenced (and synchronized) with G-Stomper over MIDI / G-Stomper Studio 4.3 Mobile App
(Device :Google Nexus 9)

This clip shows G-Stomper Studio with multiple hardware hooked up over MIDI.

All sequences are done in G-Stomper Studio, while the sounds come from G-Stomper Studio and the attached hardware.
The Nord Lead as well as the ESX1 act only as Sound Module (MIDI Extender), note that the ESX1 Sequencer is NOT running and its sequence is empty.

- The Drum Sounds on T01-T12 come from G-Stomper Studio, +triggers are fired to the backlit pads of the MPK225.
- VT01-VT04 are pure MIDI instrument tracks which control the 4 Nord Lead Synth instances.
- VT05 is a pure MIDI instrument track which controls the the ESX1.
- VT06 is a regular VA-Beast synth.

Furthermore all hardware components are synchronized over MIDI clock (to keep the delay effects and LFOs in the right timing).

The Nexus 9 runs on OpenSL with an internal Latency of 10ms + manual Latency compensation of 20ms.

Required equipment:
- 1 class compliant USB MIDI to DIN interface
- 1 USB OTG micro USB to USB adapters
- 1 4x1 MIDI Merger
- 1 1x4 MIDI Thru
- A bunch of MIDI DIN cables"

via Creative Applications Network where you'll find the full post.

"Created by Sam Conran at the RCA/Design Interactions, the Kabbalistic Synthesizer is a is a musical synthesizer that uses the combination of electric signals to build and create sound bottom up using its raw basic elements. It replaces all usual functions of a regular synthesizer, signal, noise, ADSR, gate and keyboard with alternatives that are generated by live macrocosmic phenomena. The result is a synth that operates itself with waveforms generated by the Earths magnetic field, noise via magnetic storms of Jupiter and keyboard via cosmic rays."

Pittsburgh Modular Crush Demos

"The Crush is an audio destroyer; a voltage controlled, all analog sound decimator. A sonic laser designed to shatter waveforms into a million pieces."

The Pittsburgh Crush module was originally announced in April as part of the Patch Box line of modular effects pedals.

"The latest addition to our exceptional line of eurorack format effects modules, the Crush is an audio destroyer; a voltage controlled, all analog sound decimator. A sonic laser designed to shatter waveforms into a million pieces.

Built around a custom, analog downsampling circuit, the sound of the Crush module is defined by two parameters, Sample Rate and Interpolation. Sample Rate assigns the sample timing, breaking down an audio source into ever-larger static chunks. The Interpolate switch attempts to rebuild the original waveform from the remaining pieces, imprinting a second layer of errors and unique artifacts on the output. The results are crushing.

The Crush wrecks audio without ever sounding harsh or thin. Compared to a digital bit crusher, the analog Crush sounds full and warm. Taking advantage of unlimited bit and sample rate resolutions, the Crush avoids lo-fi digital results by smoothly downsampling at infinite resolution.

An integrated voltage controlled mix cicuit allows the perfect amount of destruction to be added to the audio. Manually set the mix or use a control voltage to sweep from squeaky clean to completely crushed.

Availability, Price and More Information
The suggested retail price for the Crush module is $199 and it begins shipping to our dealers today. More information is available at pittsburghmodular.com/crush."
