"Two dictaphones with three tapes (field recording, Rhodes, and synth), played through the Koma Elektronic Field Kit provide the bed; the iPad provides the mixing surface and effects. Unfortunately, I can't include the iPad screen in this video, as it is running unreleased software that I'm not allowed to show. Multi-speed on the Rhodes tape and acoustic guitar provide the top layer."

Stravinsky Piano Sonata (1924) Programmed for the Moog Voyager

Published on Sep 16, 2018 Praxis Axis

"Before there were synths as we know them, there was Stravinsky. It's not entirely clear that synths and Stravinsky necessarily need to be brought together, but I happen to be a fan of both. And coincidentally I'm a big fan of space missions; there is a Moog Voyager synth, and of course the Voyager missions. At least to me there is some kind of important inner logic here that needs to be explored."

GFI System Specular Reverb v3 - Synth Demo [No Talking] Feat. Korg Monologue

Published on Sep 16, 2018 Oscillator Sink

"The GFI Specular Reverb v3 is a digital reverb pedal with 7 modes based around a reverb algorithm that's especially well suited to lush ambient washes. The modes are Spatium (the basic algorithm), Modulated, Shimmer, Echo, Tremble, Voices and Infinity.

The controls are kept simple so that anyone can pick it up and get going but have a wide range allowing you to take things over-the-top when the mood takes you (and it will - it really shines when working at the outer-reaches of its controls).

In this demo I pair it with a Korg Monologue. I keep the patches simple to let the Specular do the talking (but hey, doesn't the Monologue sound cool with a bunch of reverb on it?)."

OB6 Vangelis/Guitar-Style Jam (Mono/Unison mode)

Published on Sep 16, 2018 Kris Lennox

"Short demo of the Obi in unison mode. Being unison/monophonic, this take could have been performed on the MB. But it is nice to show the Obi in mono. Very strong sound. And a good demonstration of the Obi's onboard distortion.

The initial arpeggio sequence is a nod to Vangelis' 'Spiral'. I haven't listened to it in a while, but if I remember correctly the Spiral sequence is 9-note, whereas the sequence I'm playing is 7-note. I'm nodding more to the sense of the ascending arpeggios/overall harmony.

The Db section rhythmically is a 14:8 sequence, and the 'slowing down the arpeggiator' style of playing is built on a 10:8 (i.e. 5:4) sequence.

The high Oldfield/Tubular Bells-style sequence in the second half after the guitar-style solo is standard semiquavers in 4/4.

multi-sampler with modulation inputs on the percussa ssp

Published on Sep 16, 2018 PERCUSSA

"quick demo of the sampler module on the percussa ssp eurorack module, in the latest update (16092018) the sampler was extended to have seperate parameters for each of the 8 sampler slots, as well as seperate modulation inputs, such that each sample loaded into the seperate slots can be modulated by different LFOs (demonstrated in this video). Of course multiple sampler modules can be loaded in the SSP's patcher grid. More info about the SSP at http://www.percussa.com/"

Update: some additional details via the Percussa Kickstarter page:

Sampler Module

Extended sampler so parameters are accessible per sample slot and only affect the slot being edited

Extended sampler so each slot has its own modulation inputs

Fine tuned start/length parameter step size

Removed empty space after samples loaded in slots

Removed Coarse/Fine for Freq/Tune settings in sampler and replaced with single Freq/Tune parameters

Fine tuned Freq/Tune parameter step sizes with new encoder acceleration code

Removed Next/Prev buttons from sampler (use LEFT/RIGHT cursor keys now to switch slots and access parameters per slot)

Made 2 presets with multiple samplers and modulations of the different slots
Envelope Module

Fine tuned step size for parameters, tested with new encoder acceleration code
Encoders

Added new acceleration code that takes into account recent encoder changes to scale/accelerate encoder value changes

Podcast 245: Matthew Allum (ALM/Busy Circuits)

Published on Sep 16, 2018 20Objects

"From the second I saw the Akemie's Castle module, I knew I'd want to talk to its developer, Matthew Allum. What a module - and what a name! I knew there had to be stories about what was going on. I've also notices that almost every case I'm seeing has a Pamela's Workout module. Matthew let me try out a few modules, and now I understand why these are so ubiquitous: it has so much functionality (presented in such a clear fashion) that it has become central to my patches. So now it all makes sense.

Talking with Matthew was a breeze - he's into his work, but he's also thoughtful about how he works, and the ideas that turn into his modules. He's got a lot of new work coming out, but he's also working on improving existing devices - and making modules for himself and his friends, too.

If you haven't checked out the ALM/Busy Circuits range yet, you can do so at Matthew's web site: http://busycircuits.com/. This was a fun chat - enjoy!

"When I bought this a few years ago it had just been serviced by James Walker of Synth Repair Services.

It had also been fitted with a Kenton socket kit on the rear, providing CV, Gate and Filter mono mini-jack inputs - you can run a sequencer through it amongst other things. Normally I wouldn't approve of tinkering with classic models but in this case it really does add 'functionality' + the upgrade is discreet, professionally done and doesn't destroy the appearance..."

Ciat Lonbarde Tetrax Analog Touch Wood Synthesizer Organ

Side note: the auction description ends mentioning the Arturia Minibrute SE. As always be careful. When buying on eBay, be sure you actually buy through eBay for the buyer protection. If you take it offline for a "deal" you assume the risk.

"The Tetrax Organ follows a lineage of electronic musical instruments based on touch. It was redesigned once, as. It has four wooden bars that you press to express four oscillators within. Each oscillator has its own fine tuning slider, embedded right within its bar. Also, there is are two master pitch knobs, and two master chaos knobs. Each master chaos knob makes the instrument go from pure sawtooth tones to a nest of noise. It does this by gradually increasing modulation from one oscillator to the next in a circular pattern. The reason there are two of each knobs: the Tetrax is all about timbre modulation, by changing the upslope and downslope of triangle waves separately. So, for master pitch and chaos, there is a separate upwards and downwards knob. In general, Tetrax is for funky bass and complex tones, while is for sweet melodies. Of course they all have noise available at any point!

There are 28 modulation points brought forth as banana jacks. They are arranged in four columns, representing the four bars. Their layout is shifted diagonally, to allow inputs in proximity to outputs. This is for touch-playability; you can make banana jack metal studs that can be squished by hand to gesture-patch the instrument. Inputs are cool colors: blue, green, and grey. Outputs are hot colors: red and orange. The grey jacks are parallel inputs with the master knobs: the two on the left are for master pitch, the right two are master chaos. The color allotment for each bar is as follows:
Two orange jacks, representing the press and release gestures on that bar in voltage.
One red jack, which is the pure triangle output of that oscillator.
Two green jacks, that are "glitch" inputs. They cause the boundary conditions of each oscillator to wire to the output of another. A modulation inspired by circuit bending.
One blue jack, an fm modulation input for that oscillator.
The Tetrax organ has a stereo-mini output on the back. This is because each bar, outputs in different channels during the press/release cycle. In addition to the stereo-mini jack, it has an power switch, and optional built-in batteries, or an external, 9volt battery snap."

Vintage Korg 770 Analog Synthesizer 1976 SN 770073

"This synth is in incredible condition for 42 years old. Cosmetically it has some signs of wear and a hand full of the original knobs have been replaced as you can see in the photos. Everything works. Not only does everything work, I have also retrofitted the synth with a Kenton CV kit so there is cv control over Hz/V, gate, and filter. Sequencing this machines notes and filter is INSANE. You can integrate this with an analog sequencer or kenton midi to cv box (or any other cv source even a korg sq-1). Last year I also had Rosen Sound in Los Angeles install a midiplant so not only can you control the synth via cv, you can also trigger notes via the midi port on the back with a quick flip of a rear toggle switch. I personally still prefer the control and resolution of straight cv. The synth is really incredible and I've sampled more sounds from it than any other instrument I own. Have a listen to some demos on youtube if you aren't familiar. This machine is from another planet. The serial number is 770073 and it was one of the first units produced. Extremely rare. Also including a custom made dust cover."

Rush - Tom Sawyer Bass Growl | Tutorial with Korg Minilogue, No Talking

Published on Sep 16, 2018 Anodyne Institute

"What's happening here?

We adjust our First Oscillator to be a number of octaves lower than its default pitch. We introduce Oscillator Two an octave above the first, barely mixing it in so that it doesn't overwhelm the deep bass of the first. We slightly detune the second oscillator to add subtle animation and fluffiness.

We switch from Polyphonic mode to Unison mode. All of the oscillators are now stacked for one massive voice. We again slightly detune all of these oscillators, using the contextual Voice Mode Depth knob, for more animation and fluffiness. (This is caused by all of these waveforms subtly cancelling each other out at different points, creating more of a bass 'pad' than a solid bass tone.)

We move on to the filter. We use the filter in 2-pole mode, for a wider range of resonance and preservation of bass; the 4-pole filter can cut out bass frequencies at higher resonance because the curve is so steep. (Plus we think that Rush used an Oberheim OB-X for this sound, and it uses a 2-pole filter as well!) We add resonance to the filter, set our 'target cutoff frequency' manually, then add the modulation envelope's contribution to the filter. This automates the signature filter sweep so that we don't need to play it by hand.

The length of the decay on the filter envelope and how deeply it is applied, combined with the resonance amount and the fuzzy unison voice, are some of the most key ingredients here.

Finally, we add echo from the delay section. Using the high pass filter on the echoes is very useful in preventing such thick bass frequencies from getting muddy, and the repeats (feedback amount) really accentuate the filter sweep.

We fine-tune some of these key parameters: resonance, envelope decay length, envelope modulation depth. *We initially made the attack of the filter envelope a little too long and it produces a sharp, liquid pop.* Welp, now you have the opportunity to do better!

The Anodyne Institute is a fictional place. We would like to make all of the sounds."
