Down to the Sky

davidryle

"Moog Subharmonicon, Meris Hedra, Strymon Blue Sky, Tip Top Z-DSP with Valhalla Shimmer and the large format modular 5U. All levels were automated by the Q119 and two Q960 step sequencers from synthesizers.com. An additional pair of oscillators (Dove Audio WTF and Mutable Instruments Braids) are following the timing of Seq1 and Seq2 clocks of the Subharmonicon and indexing the STG Voltage Mini Stores for pitch data. Finally a rumbling and squelchy effects patch is from a frequency shifter, random voltage sources and an Arp 4072 filter."

I'm still learning how to use it, and have barely scratched the surface of it's potential so far.
Thanks for watching!"

"I purchased this 23 years ago as an investment. When I received it was fully functional and I was able to nail a bass patch that sounded every bit as powerful as any Moog I've ever heard. After a year it stopped functioning and I Opened it up and noticed the filter was potted with epoxy to safeguard anyone copying the circuit but also prevents service.I packed it back up and it has been in storage until now.I was considering sending it to discrete synthesizers (CMS) for service but there are quite a few options that would improve upon the existing instrument but I should leave that up to the end user how it should be hot-rodded..."

Update: See the comments below for some debate over why the filter was encapsulated.

Tutorial: Funky Keys Pt 2 (Playing Lead Sounds)

"Want to rock out on a lead sound?
Here's a few tips on how to make your synth talk!"

With the Sequential Prophet-6

Polyphonic Buchla 100!?!

zack dagoba

"I managed to get a Buchla 114 touch plate module from La67. To be honest I didn't really know what exactly this module would do functionally, as there are not many videos up featuring its, especially for what I wanted it to be able to do - namely trigger multiple VCOs and VCAs to turn the Buchla 100 into a fully polyphonic instrument - but to my immense joy it actually did what I had hoped for = HAPPY

So this patch uses 4 x 144 VCOs (8 oscillators in total), and 8 VCAs (4 x 110 gates and - CHEAT ALLERT - 4 x Roland 100M VCAs). I'm waiting on a replica 107 module that was made to compliment the 114 (10 x VCAs)

The cool thing is that the 114 has 10 CV outs that can be used as 10 envelopes, and then the touch-controls can also help articulate the notes. It seems a very clever design (as always from The Don) and I wonder why I have never seen anyone else use the Buchla 100 as a supremely flexible 10-note polyphonic synth (not bad for 1960s technology - as far as I know, the 1974 Oberheim 4-Voice is known as the first commercially available polysynth, but this is clearly not the case!)"

Reflections

Martin Peters

"This music is somewhat inspired by the beautiful music accompanying the slide show of the Node Live Blu-Ray. You hear the Sequentix Cirklon sequencing 2 voices of the Synthesizers.com Modular, the Oberheim SEM and the Mutable Instruments Stages which is configured as a Harmonic Oscillator. The NDLR is sequencing the Korg Odyssey and the DSI Mopho. The VCF of the Moog Polymoog is triggered by the gates of a separate Cirklon sequence. The solo is on the Moog Minimoog.

The title refers to questions spinning around in my head for which no one knows the answers to.

The track was recorded live to multi-track on the Behringer X32 Compact and mixed in Studio One afterwards. I hope you will enjoy it.

The track can be downloaded from Bandcamp."

Techno sketch // 0-Coast

Stefano Mattia

"0-Coast showing some seriously biting character in this short techno jam.

Not the kind of music I usually make, but it was Friday night and I somehow came up with this monster patch and played along.

The slope with both Rise and Fall set to 12 0'clock, and with Vari-Response set to linear, generates a very sweet sounding triangle-like wave, which is the one you hear in the beginning. Blending overtones from the main oscillator, and playing with the Multiply and Overtone knobs results in a whole range of abrasive tones, which I reckon might come in handy in some situations. The Contour EOC feeds the clock, while a mix of random signal, slope and "MIDI B" triangle LFO modulates overtones and gate, resulting in variable note lengths. Finally, the square "MIDI B" square LFO hits the Linear FM once in a while, generating interesting periodic glitches.
I added drums and reverb (a Bricasti M7 IR in Logic's Space Designer) and a bass line in Logic.
Enjoy!"

Synthchaser Restored Vintage ARP Quadra Synthesizer Keyboard with New Sliders

Synth Chaser

via this auction

"This ARP Quadra has just been professionally overhauled by Synthchaser, the foremost expert on ARP Quadras! Work done included new red LED sliders (illumination can be dimmed or disabled by control of a knob mounted just inside the synth), recap of all tantalum and electrolytic capacitors, new touch sensor, keyboard refurbishment, new IC chips, and more reliability enhancements!

Here is a video demo of the actual keyboard being sold:

While many synths are listed as "serviced" or "fully serviced", they are usually devoid of any details of what was actually done. Those that do provide details or service invoices often reveal that the synth was merely superficially serviced, and not genuinely "future-proofed". I have not only serviced this Quadra, I've taken it down to the chassis and overhauled it. Work done included:

"Akai Z8 With 80 gig HD loaded, also has the very rare 8 output expansion installed. Maxed ram yielding up to 50 minutes of Stereo sampling or 100 min of mono sampling : )

Operational Condition : It all works.. all buttons, jacks, display, dials, encoders and screen. Hard drive works great as does USB ports. Hard Drive has several samples / programs on it. NOTE.. On a cold start / boot, the screen may stay on the "Panel Operating System" screen.. After 10 seconds or so, after HD and OS boot, you can press any button, like Utility, Load, Save etc to reach main screen. Usually only happens after not being powered on for a long while. Otherwise, this Z8 functions like it should."

Best Ambient Synth Shootout #96: Casio CZ-1 - Song 1

Christian's Sonic Spaces

"This is the first song with the CZ-1. It's a 16 voice Phase Distortion synthesizer from the mid 80s. The only Casio Synth from the CZ series that featured velocity and aftertouch sensitivity.

I used for the recording the following FX chain:
CZ-1 - Pigtronix Quantum - Digitech Obscura - Pigtronix Echolution 2 Deluxe - GFI System Specular Reverb 2. Depending on the recorded track some FX are deactivated

The signal went through a Presonus StudioLive 16.0.2 into the PC via USB for recording. To create the complete song I recorded consecutively several stereo tracks. The final song was then mastered with a bit EQ and compression on some tracks and some limiting on the master track."

When the Prophet 600 heats up

"Quick video to show how sounds a Prophet 600 when it's heating.
Mine doesn't have the Gligli mod so it goes out of tune easily.
Needs about 30 minutes for being 100% in tune!"

Juno 60 vs TAL-U-NO-LX-V2

Valmont / Mooggy

"I did this video very quickly but anyway even without more precise comparison you can feel how close the TAL emulation is from the original machine.

What I think about this:
- Attack/Decay bites more on original Juno, emulation loses dynamics with Chorus enabled
- Chorus is finner on original unit, and there's a true vibrato in mode 1+2
- Filter is a bit more instable on the Juno, yet the emulation is really good and accurate
- Emulation's parameters go further than original's: longer decay, higher cutoff, longer Pulse Width
- Factory presets on TAL's sound different because of parameters range.

Overall a fantastic emulation for a portion of the original's price
In an A/B comparison, TAL's has less presence and it's a bit cleanner
But in a mix there would be no way to differenciate an emulation from the original unit."
