Novation Circuit - Sound Design with -CALC- // Novation Live

The video should start when -CALC-. If not skip ahead to 2:13 in.

"-CALC- is back with another livestream. In this session -CALC- explores the powerful and often overlooked synth engine within the Novation Circuit. Circuit has two separate synths with a stack of power and using the free Novation Components editor we’ll open up the possibilities for sound design with this super powerful groovebox.

Upgrades To Pete McBennett's DIY Synth

Pete McBennett

"Hi everyone, here is a demo of the new features of my code and filter. My Arduino code now has a low bass range that is toggled with what used to be the high F key. (See time stamp 0:07 and 0:32) I found it convenient to use that key for switching up and down. I have also added a sustain toggle switch which holds the current note until the next key is pressed. (See time stamp 0:15 and 0:44) Very useful. The sustain switch uses pin A7 on a Nano.

Here is the new schematic with the added sustain switch: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1kgCR...

Here is the new code with octave toggle and sustain switch: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Otak...

I also modified my filter slightly to add a switch for manual control of the filter sweep. (See time stamp 0:59) Sorta like my old LDR synths but controlled with the cutoff frequency knob. And in the process of experimenting, I discovered that Q2 is not necessary. The LM358 buffer stage has plenty of capability to drive the LED's directly, Q2 was a leftover from an early design. This is an easy mod for those who may have already built the filter. Oh yeah, this filter does not have a built in auto trigger like the other one, but any square wave LFO will work if fed into the trigger input.

Here is the schematic for the modified filter: https://drive.google.com/file/d/17_6u..."

Modal COBALT 8 vs JUPITER Xm: How do these to virtual analog synths compare?

Starsky Carr

"This is really just answering a few comments and questions I've received about the Cobalt 8 and Jupiter Xm... they both offer new takes on Virtual analog, but how have things progressed in the last 20 years? the Access Virus and Novation Supernova, both multitimbral VAs have been around since the late 90s ... so what's new?"

Abstract - Jazzy IDM - Sequenced Live Looping, Linnstrument, Expressive Touche, Rhodes, Prophet 10

Analog Industries

"I've been working on a live performance rig for a hot minute now, and I think I've finally settled on this combo, or something in this neighborhood. (I may replace the Rhodes with a Novation Summit or other live performance synth, as the Rhodes is borderline road-worthy.)

Anyhow, this video is a proof-of-concept of the rig. Multiple sequenced live loopers in Bitwig Studio (Audio Damage Enso, in this case looping the bassline and the main Rhodes chords), controlled from a Nektar Panorama P1. Linnstrument and Expressive-E Touche providing controller duties. The synth line you hear me playing is the Prophet 10 Rev 4; I'm converting the CC from the Touche in to controller CC for the Prophet on the fly using Bitwig's excellent Modulators.

Using Expressive play with Hardware [Tutorial]

Sensel

"Expressive play is not just for software! Here, we uncover how to get real with your machines, using the X, Y, and Z controls from any pad on the Sensel Morph. Inspired by the multiple dimensions of MIDI Polyphonic Expression, we find some clever ways to control hardware synths. We create special maps that directly control the knobs and sliders on hardware to get sounds that you would otherwise not. Turn your hardware into flexible sound design machines by playing, not turning knobs and sliders (as fun as that is!)."

LDRama 1

cirtcele

Light from the film controls the patch.

"1st attempt to make a demo with this module, using an excerpt from the public domain film Daughter of Dementia to generate CVs. Yes my phone is a bit big (A21) but works fine, the design suits regular 5x2 inch phones. If you want to use your synth for making soundtracks, this module is pretty useful.

The video shown is playing full screen on my phone, which is sitting on a bank of LDRs (light dependent resistors). As the LDRs change corresponding to what is on the screen, the circuit generates a variety of CVs based on different sections of the screen."

Kastle Drum - every feature explained - modular glitch-drummachine

"Kastle Drum is a special edition of Bastl’s classic mini modular synth focusing on algorithmic industrial glitchy drums. A mini modular synthesizer with a headphone output, 2 in/out ports for interfacing other gear, and it runs on just 3 AA batteries. It is ideal for beginners in modular synthesis, but it will add some quite unique functionality to any modular synthesizer system. It delivers the fun of modular synthesis at a low price and fits into your pocket so you can play it anywhere!"

"Kastle was originally released in Fall 2016 and gained instant popularity as an affordable, pocket-sized modular synth. We processed a lot of feedback and introduced a much improved version v1.5 a year later. Now we’re revisiting the concept once again with an alternative way to operate the same hardware.

The design process gave birth to a seemingly limited, but in fact an innovative and quite playful take on a rhythm box that is using some novel concepts, like the dynamic acceleration envelope to build “a lot of dynamic rhythm” out of very little modulation.

The Kastle Drum is a special edition of Bastl’s classic mini modular synth focusing on algorithmic industrial glitchy drums.

Drum sound synthesis with a unique dynamic acceleration charged envelope makes this rhythm box surprisingly versatile and extremely fun to play. The built-in VC clock generator with a stepped pattern sequencer can either run on its own or it can be synchronized to analog clock, while retaining the triangle LFO for parameter modulation.

How to make Moderat -- New Error using triplets on the Running Order and Shuttle System

Endorphin.es

"Running Order as Triplet Generator

In this video we are using Running Order to generate triplet triggers (3/4), while the pitch information is coming from the sequencer in 4/4. The example is a track named New Error by @Moderat, where both the bass and lead are played in triplets. Experiment by using different sources for triggers and cv to create new and interesting sequences, try different time signatures available on Running Order to break away from the typical 4/4 feel."
