Digisound modular synth

flickr by Dr Nerdware

What is that little guy on top of the modular?

"In my old studio. Please note the stand-alone reverb module and its equally naked power supply. Very dangerous! Please don't do it like this! The grey metal box on top is the power amp module, which also has its own PSU, but safely inside the box."

My studio - 1981

flickr by Chris_Carter_ where you'll find a description of the studio. Be sure to click on the All Sizes link when you get there for the full size shot. This is also Chris Carter's MySpace page. Note the Gristleizer.

The synths:
"The modular system on the right consists of three Roland 190 racks and two 191J racks containing: two 182 Step Sequencers, 121 Dual VCF, 130 Dual VCA, 112 Dual VCO, 150 Ring Mod/Noise/S&H/LFO, 110 VCO/VCF/VCA, 172 Audio Delay/Phaser/LFO/Gate Delay.
Also included in the Roland racks were a number of my own self-built modules, including a: Digisound Dual VCO, Digisound Dual VCF, Digisound Dual VCA, Digisound Dual ADSR, Digisound Dual RM, Blacet variable clock/divider, a Gristleizer module and (in the top rack) a flanger/delay and a dual phaser/flanger/delay.
Under the modular system is a Boss DR-55 Dr. Rhythm (sitting on top of) a Roland CSQ-600 Digital Sequencer, a Roland TR-808 (one of the first in the UK I might add), a Sinclair frequency meter (for tuning) and a Roland 181 Controller Keyboard."

sent my way via Benge. BTW, do check out this post on Benge's Twenty Systems as well. The CD is a tribute to synths and comes with a very nice CD book on the synth used for each track. The CD received praise from Brian Eno.

Digisound 80 and Oberkorn 3 modular

"Hard work trying to get a good sequence going. And really hard to keep this lot in tune. Love the sound of this Synth though. Sorry about the abrupt end. (my camera's memory ran out). Running this through a Boss DE 200 Echo unit."

DIGISOUND 80 analog modular synthesizer

YouTube via scienceforce

"This modular is a Digisound 80 with 8 voices polyphonic keyboard... you can play it as mono or in polyphonic mode. The Digisound 80 circuits are based on Curtis IC (CEM). All the knobs are the same of the EMS VCS3 (mirror cap release) very nice shape!"

Update via Martin: "Around 60 Rhythm Machines are not placed and also all 90 Electro-Harmonix Effects are stored. You can see that the Synthorama has really a big space problem :-)

Digisound Mod 80 - VEMIA

"This is my original Digisound 80 synth. I bought all the kits from Charles Blakey's company in the early 80's. It comprises 2 VCOs, VCLFO, 2 x EGs, Dual VCA, Dual Ring Mod, LP VCF, VCM, Lag Processor, S&H/Noise module and a DAC unit. All the modules except the DAC are calibrated and trimmed and in excellent condition. I modified the DAC by adding a simple MIDI/CV circuit (Penfold's design). It works but it is not up to the standard of a Kenton unit! I also have the parts for the Octave/Shift XY controller which is mounted in an ABS case at present. The PSU is the original Digisound unit. The modules are mounted in a wooden case with a black wood grain finish. I have a complete set of documentation including construction notes, user manual, introduction to synthesis and foil patterns if you want to make your own boards. To look at more pictures and listen to audio clips go to www.vcf.talktalk.net and click on Digisound."

Digisound Mod 80 modules - VEMIA

"A very interesting collection of Digisound modules, loose, but generally looking in very good condition. The lot includes: Noise/Sample & Hold; D:A Converter; External Input; Power Amplifier; Dual VCA; VCLFO; VCO; VCO; State Variable Filter; Dual ADSR; VCF (lowpass); and PSU. All chips including the rare and valuable ones (CEM3340s and SSM2040, for instance) seem to be present. Everything seems in good overall condition except that the two connectors which hold the power amplifier circuit board in place are broken, and the board is loose. Sold as seen, untested, with no guarantee of working order, and recommended for someone with good technical skills; but with no reason to believe there is a lot wrong with the modules. A spring reverb tank and what seems to be a spare psu are also included, and a non-matching multiples panel. Packing at VEMIA (a difficult job to do well) will be £10; some literature copies may also be available on request for a small fee."

Music & Recording - Digisound 80 Modular Synthesizer

"Somewhere in proffessor Elektrovolt's studio,in the vruchtenbuurt, the Hague we can find a huge, rare british modular synthesizer from the early 80s, the Digisound 80 modular. Invented and designed by Charles Blackley who would print the designs in the Electronics Today International and Electronics & Music Maker (E&MM) magazines. As obscure and extrentic as the EMS synthesizers the company from Blackpool faded away in the early 1990s."

Click here for more including images and a demo. BTW, the Music & Recording header image on top of the page is worth a visit alone.
