"Persephone is the new VCA module by Expert Sleepers but it's much more than a simple VCA! It uses a JFET as the gain element that can generate amazing overdrive and distortion sounds! Furthermore, it includes a zero-crossing detector and an asymmetry switch. In this video I go through all these different features of Persephone."

"'Persephone' is a VCA (Voltage Controlled Amplifier) using a discrete JFET as the gain element. The JFET can be tastefully (or violently) overdriven for saturation/distortion effects.

Persephone also includes a zero-crossing detector, which can be used to restrict gain changes to zeros in the audio waveform, preventing clicks and pops that can occur with very fast envelopes, especially on lower pitched sounds. In fact, with the zero-crossing circuit engaged, you can use a simple gate as the CV input without clicks.

The module's signal and CV paths are 100% analogue (there is a little discrete logic involved in the zero-cross circuitry)."

Firmware update notes via Expert Sleepers:

Added the Sequencers.
Added support for driving the Euclidean patterns via a Launchpad.
Added extensive accessibility support (aimed at using a screen reader with the associated HTML tool) via MIDI SysEx.
Added five new arpeggiator modes.
Added an option for Triggers to be triggered by any note on a MIDI channel.
Added 'Clock' and 'Eucliean' options for LFO Resets.
Added 'Random' per voice outputs for MIDI/CV converters.
Added an 'Echo MIDI' setting for the Launch Control XL, so its LEDs can be updated when driving the FH-2.
Fixed an issue with when transport start clocks were updated, noticeable with certain sequencers which send a MIDI start a considerable time before the first MIDI clock.

Granular Synthesis with the Disting EX Granulator by Expert Sleepers

"Expert Sleepers has added a new granular synthesis algorithm to the disting EX. Load samples from the micro SD card into the granulator, or process / record audio live. Enable the three individual drone voices and manipulate the grain parameters to create gorgeous new sounds. Play the granular audio buffer via CV/gates or with a controller. Over MIDI it can be played as an 8 voiced polyphonic instrument. This algorithm is highly detailed, musical and a brilliant addition to the impressive disting EX (as of firmware version 1.7)."

"In this episode I extended my Top 3 combo with Disting Mk4 and Pamela's new Workout, upgrading it to a top 5. Needless to say this is an insanely powerful combo, but it also gets complicated very quickly. As a starter, you should always focus on the result - the music you like to make. So i ended up with a great 'starter kit 02' combo, a small Mutable Instruments 'system' with Marbles, Plaits, Stages, Ripples and Clouds. Costwise, it adds up pretty close to the Top 5 configuration, but it's much easier to get cool sounds and music out of it."

Minky Starshine quick demo—Glass Pad

"Quick demo of the Minky Starshine additive synth. Not even a demo, really, just a chord progression I came up with while making the patch. I got this originally in 2004 according to my records, so I've had it now for 17 years LOL. Got this because there was no way was ever going to be able to get an Alpha Syntauri even though that was almost 20 years earlier. Made by Expert Sleepers, the same folks now make make the Disting and other Eurorack modules. Super happy they're still keeping it modern OS compatible. Like many older soft synths the interface is now super tiny, mostly because at the time nobody could have possibly imagined today's high-res monitors. Everything still works though so I'm not complaining. I suppose if this were a modern app everything would be scalable live animation in 3D but none of that's really necessary to be honest.

Minky Starshine is basically an additive synthesizer with a subtractive filter, with three LFOs and some envelope generators, and you can use all those to modulate the harmonics. Makes the sound shift and shimmer in interesting ways, or you can "just" make your regular old synth patches too. Surprisingly flexible despite at first glance having not all that many controls. And as a bonus it's delightfully psychedelic too. You can still buy it for remarkably little money (iLok account required) and it still sounds great even after several decades.

"Pensive piano-driven ambience with heavy processing, influenced by the late great Harold Budd and his collaborations with Eno and Lanois.

Piano chords: Soft Piano sample in Disting EX, sequenced by Mimetic Digitalis. Modifying envelope time leads to some notes being omitted, giving subtle variations in the notes played.

Treatment chain 1: L1 Stereo Microcompressor into Verbos Multi Delay, with Intellijel μVCF resonant bandpass in feedback loop.

Treatment chain 2: Pittsburgh Filter resonant highpass into Rings in Sympathetic Strings mode. Structure modulated by a sequence in a polymetric relationship to the chord sequence, giving variations to the emergent background pitches.

Overall effects: Chronoblob 2 and 2hp Verb."
