New PM Foundations State Machine Demo

Published on Oct 22, 2018 Randy Piscione

"This is a demo of an upcoming Eurorack module from PM Foundations, a function/envelope generator called 'State Machine.' It will be available here: http://www.tindie.com/stores/pmfounda.... The video starts with scope stuff, then at 2:56 a demo of the module and at 6:49, percussion pattern generator.

As with all PM Foundations modules, this is sold as a panel and PCB. The demo uses, at various times, the State Machine, a clock, 4 VCFs, 2 LFOs, 4 VCOs, 3 other EGs and 4 VCAs. The percussion in the last section is all resonating filters, there are no actual drum modules used."

Zachtronics Shenzhen I/O - Synthesizer FM BLASTER

Published on Oct 8, 2018 정광훈

"Shenzhen I/O - My Synthe v1.0"

Interesting interface. I did a little digging and it turns out Shenzhen I/O is essentially a virtual circuit playground/building kit in software. You can build all sorts of things, not just musical instruments. There are examples of Tetris being built with it out there. You'll find some details on the FM BLASTER below, but first some details on Shenzhen I/O in general via Zachtronics:

SHENZHEN I/O: BUILD CIRCUITS. WRITE CODE. RTFM.

Build circuits using a variety of components from different manufacturers, like microcontrollers, memory, and logic gates.

Write code in a compact and powerful assembly language where every instruction can be conditionally executed.
Read the included manual, which includes over 30 pages of original datasheets, reference guides, and technical diagrams.

Get to know the colorful cast of characters at your new employer, located in the electronics capital of the world.

Get creative! Build your own games and devices in the sandbox.

Engineering is hard! Take a break and play a brand-new twist on solitaire.

"Despite the fact that this is the best thing ever, the piezo buzzer in SHENZHEN I/O does leave a little to be desired in terms of audio.

To fill that gap, we’re introducing the FM BLASTER (FM/iX) by Mountleaf Sound Concepts, 'a versatile FM-based tone generator with 10 professionally designed, stunningly realistic preset patches that cover a wide range of musical directions, including classical, rock, plastic, gasp, and techno.'

If you’re using a printed version of the manual, be sure to check the in-game PDF manual and print out a copy of the FM BLASTER datasheet."

Rare Waves MIDI Narrator - Vintage Speech Synth DIY Kit

Published on Oct 4, 2018 EA78751

"MIDI Narrator is a fun MIDI-controlled vintage speech synthesizer. This DIY electronics kit from Rare Waves is for creative musicians, audio producers, and sound designers. It features the SP0256-AL2 speech synthesizer chip. These chips were used in 1980's home computers and arcade games. This kit lets you play all of its sounds from a MIDI controller or sequencer. Plus it adds pitch bend, pitch modulation, random pitch, and stutter effects. And, it can store up to 8 phrases for instant triggered playback from the on-board buttons. You assemble it by soldering, with our easy to follow step-by-step instructions.

Ultimate Eurorack Controller? 16 CV outputs with the 16n Faderbank

Published on Oct 2, 2018 DivKidVideo

"The 16n Faderbank is a 16 high quality fader controller that offers 16 direct 0 to 5 volt outputs (one per slider) as well as I2C and a minijack MIDI connectivity with both Korg and Arturia MIDI standards on a switch. Super handy, super playable, good fun, tonnes of potential for control and patching. This is an open source DIY project so you can make your own, or have a friendly DIY builder (I can recommend some) make one for you if you're not in a position to do so. But the designers are looking to get built units made too. Check the link below for information.

This unit is a final prototype rushed through for me for Deershed Festival back in July. I used it with this same basic patch in the video to allow anyone to come and jam with modular and make music quickly. As you can see here - [posted here]

New Triadex Muse Converter Proto

Published on Sep 15, 2018 otherunicorn

"Second generation of the Triadex Muse converter during development. A collaboration between Nathan Thompson and Ken Stone. [Ken Stone of Cat Girl Synth/CGS]

Basic test only: 3 VCOS, one following the octave slider, one following the standard output of the Muse and one controlled by the slide pots, each being selected by the 3 bit address generated by the note sliders on the muse. Slider tuning is slightly off - a hazard of all analog sequencers.

If only the original Muse had sounded like this...."

KnobCon 7 (2018) part 16 - Detroit Underground & the DU-INO: The Ultimate Eurorack Arduino Shield

Published on Sep 11, 2018 SynthMania

"Aaron shows their latest Arduino based diy module "shield", the DUIno"

Details via Kickstarter:

"What is DU-INO?

In a nutshell? It's whatever you want it to be, in 14 HP.

If you're feeling verbose, call DU-INO a compact programmable digital-analog function platform. With 14 total configurable I/O, using precision ADC and DAC circuits and an analog computer, a vast array of functions are possible. A graphical OLED display and various tactile inputs offer a rich user interface.

It’s essentially the ultimate Eurorack Arduino shield. Supplying your own Arduino (or other shield-compatible microcontroller board), you can select from our growing library of functions, or use our full-featured open source Arduino library to write your own!

Just a few of the myriad A to Z functions to which the DU-INO hardware and software lends itself include arpeggiators, 8-bit oscillators, clock sources and modulators, delays, envelope generators, function generators, glitch effects, harmonic generators, inverters, jack routers, key shifters, LFOs, MIDI interfaces, noise sources, oscilloscopes, parameter storage, quantizers, randomizers, sequencers, transports, utilities of all sorts, VCAs, waveshapers... well, I made it to W!

And, did I mention that they can talk to each other (and other expansion modules) over I2C?"

Motion FM Synthesizer

Published on Sep 2, 2018 Yuki Kuramochi

Note the following is translated via Google Translate. You can find the original Japanese further below.

"Now, popular microcontroller board 'micro: bit'.

By combining this with YAMAHA 's sound board "YMF 825", I found that it is possible to build very creative sounds using the Python language.

The sound is controlled in real time only with the acceleration sensor of the microcomputer board. The point to be aware of is that the YMF 825 is driven by the SPI signal, not the MIDI sound chip. It is control to write parameters (frequency, algorithm, degree of modulation ...) of the FM synthesizer to the registers to the last. In order to control with MIDI signals, you need a driver to convert from MIDI to SPI, but fortunately the sample program has been published, in which the program corresponding to the driver was included.

Dradique - DIY Casio CZ inspired synthesizer - Demonstration

Published on Aug 31, 2018 DrummingEvil

"Lovely, lovely Casio CZ phase distortion running on an Arduino Due. I'm loving it. Details, code and schematics coming soon on http://www.evilturtle.nl

I've done quite extensive research into the inner workings of the Casio CZ series synthesizers and found out there are quite a few oddities that make those synths sound like they do. I've incorporated all these little details in Dradique, while also adding my own twist to things. All in all I'm very satisfied with the results, though there are some minor bugs still."
