Voltage Modular VM900 System 35 Sequence

video upload by boxoftextures

"Built a Moog System 35 modular system using the VM900 Collection modules in Voltage Modular. Essentially the System 35 is one row of modules, but in this case I've also added the Sequencer Complement B Expansion Cabinet as well. I've also built the larger System 55, which adds another row of modules to the cabinet, and am planning to make the smaller Model 15 as well. Can't quite duplicate them exactly but they're darn close. One of the things that's not the same is the signal routing modules, which aren't in Voltage Modular, although to be fair you don't at all need them in the software version the way you do in hardware. Another difference is that there's "only" a selection of modules as opposed to everything Moog ever made. That's also not a problem either. As an example, the 921ABB dual oscillator module in the System 35 isn't included in the VM900 Collection, but the 921ABBB from the System 55 is, so while not 100% authentic you can just pretend your System 35 doesn't have those extra B oscillators. Another difference is the keyboard interface modules, but again, because this is software that's not really a problem. Lastly the half-height row of the cabinet, the one at the bottom with the Console Panels, isn't part of either Voltage Modular or the VM900 Collection. But once again, that's not really an issue as you do have the functionality of those modules in the software regardless.

This video was recorded uninterrupted from start to finish, with no cuts or edits in the video at all. Note that it takes a few minutes to patch together enough modules for the thing to actually make noises, perhaps around 5 minutes or so. Also, I start from the bare System 35 and patch it all from scratch, with captions and highlights to show what I'm doing. Downloadable patch files will be posted for my Patreon subscribers shortly, so if you'd like to grab those head on over there and join up if you'd like."

REON "System 55" Modular Spotted

You might remember back in July 2015 REON unveiled their M-System C1 modular synthesizer in Moog/dotcom format which consisted of 3 VCOs, 3 VCFs, 2 VCAs, 2 ENVs, 1 LFO and 2 Mixers.

Take a look at the image to the left from Japan's Musical Instruments Fair. Click on it and zoom in. BOTH systems are REON. At first I thought the top was the M-System C1 (with an added step sequencer on the top left) sitting on top of a Moog System 55. It turns out the bottom is made from REON modules as well.

Below is a video of an M-System with sequencer from RockoNCompany.

Moog Modular 55 Lego Set

Moog Modular 55

Vote for Lego to make them here!

Another great set via andy g @grobie

You can also vote for his Minimoog Lego set here [previous post].

On the Moog 55 set:

"The synthesizer that started it all...The Moog System Modular Synthesizer, represented here by the widely-known 55 model.

In 1964, Dr. Robert Moog showed the first of his modular synthesizers to the world, and over the next few years transformed the emerging world of electronic music synthesis by taking a keyboard-based approach to the controlled manipulation of electronic sounds. The Moog 55 and subsequent models made their way into universities, concert stages, and recording studios around the world.

In a modular synthesizer, various electronic components such as voltage-controlled oscillators, amplifiers, filters, and envelopes are "patched" together in various ways by hardware cables, allowing the composer or player to a world of new sonic possibilities. Since the instrument is modular, various components can be swapped out, replaced, or upgraded to suit the needs of the musician.

This Lego-ified version of the Moog 55 has swappable black panels full of components, dials, and audio jacks that can be connected in various ways. Obviously, the elements are only meant to suggest the qualities of the various modular components, and the owner of this set could customize the cabling and dial and jack placement to their heart's content."

“SILENCE IS *NOT* REQUESTED”: A THREE-DAY VISION QUEST at Tinity College Dublin

This one in via @carolinezoids

"'Silence is *NOT* Requested': 29-31 May w/ Synth Petting Zoo, @Analog_On & #Moog System 55: http://www.tcd.ie/ … #berkeley50 @matrixsynth"

The will be performances as well of course. Full details here.

"Time to move outside our comfort zone…
In a nod towards the artistic “happenings” and gatherings of the 1960s, the Library of Trinity College Dublin presents three nights of poets, music, sound effects, psychedelic projections and swirling quadraphonic sound in the Berkeley Library.

Curated by Richard Duckworth of the Department of Music, these events link the fifty years since the Moog synth was made commercially available with the opening of the Berkeley Library, and mark a radical departure from our usual events…

The nights have at their heart the classic Moog System 55 synthesiser – in Dublin as part of an upcoming Science Gallery exhibition – and we are very grateful to Paul Smith/Moog Sound Lab UK for its use. Each night will feature a 'Synth Petting Zoo' to get up close and personal with the rig."

New Moog Clone Coming From New Synth Maker, frobesynth

Moog Clone Keyboard Test Published on Aug 1, 2015 glkibler

We have a new maker coming. This is the first frobesynth post on the site.

"Test of my 'Frobe' hand-wired (no printed circuits) prototype Moog modular clone. What better way to test if a Moog is sounding like a Moog than with a little taste of Aquatarkus?

FROBE SYSTEM SPECIFICATIONS:

100% Hand-wired analog modular synthesizer. No printed circuit boards.

3x Voltage Controlled Oscillators
1x Low Pass Filter (24db/Oct 4-pole)
2x Low Frequency VCO (LFOs)
4x ADSR Envelope Generators:
4x Voltage Controlled Amplifiers
1x Sample and Hold
1x Noise Generator (Pink, White, Random)
1x CV Recorder/Dual Channel Sequencer
1x 4-Channel Mixer
2x Multiples Panel
1x Ring Modulator
1x Gated Slew (Portamento)
1x MIDI-to-CV Conversion
1x +/-15V 1.5A Power Supply"

I asked gkibler if his clone was based on original Moog schematics and if the modules would be available in completed, kit form, or via DIY instructions.

"Yes, it's heavily based around the original and updated Moog schematics but in order for the space savings I had to make some decisions how to strip what I viewed as extraneous knobs and parameters. I originally envisioned building these as complete units with a limited run of around 12 to 15 per year, yet keeping the cost down to somewhere under the $5K price point. Which is a great deal, considering this inhabits 80-90% of the capabilities and features somewhere between a Moog System 35 ($22K) and System 55 ($35K). Hope to have a detailed website available soon with more info."

Don Martin Mini

Click here for more images of this Donimoog sent in by an anonymous reader. According to the person that sent it in, the "sound is very good, and extreme close, quasi the same as the original mini, I only noticed a different filter tracking." Except that, there are 7 other main differences (physical) Can u find them?"

For those of you not familiar with the Donimoog, Don Martin actually owned the MOOG name in the US when Bob Moog was running his company under the Big Briar name. Bob sued and eventually won his name back. You can read more in this Sound on Sound article where the following was pulled:

"In the 1990s, three new companies appeared, each bearing the Moog name, although none was connected with Bob Moog himself. In addition to the short-lived UK company Moog Music Ltd (see the 'Cambrian Capers' box towards the end of this article), there was the US-based Moog Music Inc, a company owned by a character named Don Martin who made lavish promises of new Minimoogs and other classic Moog products, took deposits from customers, but failed to deliver and then allegedly disappeared. The other company was Moog CE, which built modules for original Moog instruments such as the System 55 and IIIC. The owner of Moog CE, Michael Bucki, recently reached an amicable arrangement with Bob Moog, selling his name back to him, and renaming his company ModuSonics. He is still in business.

With Don Martin's Moog Music Inc defunct, and Moog CE renamed, Bob Moog was then free to rename Big Briar Moog Music Inc, and to undertake the development of the Minimoog Voyager. Except in the UK, of course, where it is marketed and sold as the Voyager By Bob Moog"

So can you spot the 7 differences? : ) BTW, DO NOT MISS this post.

Update via Guido on AH:
"Let me bring everyone up to date on my Buchla saga.

I bought a very large Moog from a gentleman in California for $13,500 shipped.

I took a Moog 15's worth of modules out of the system along with a Bode frequency shifter and the 960/962 combo. I already had a fire damaged 960/962 along with a Moog filter bank and a 921 oscillator bank.

I made a Moog 15 and extension cabinet with the "good" 960/962 and the Bode.

I traded Paul a "Moog 55's" worth of modules straight across for a large Buchla 200.

Only three Buchla modules were damaged by the coke or coffee spillage. The 219 keyboard and both Marfs. I sent those to JL in Canada who, after six months, had not gotten them to work. So I sold them...not working...to a gentleman in California for $11,500.

I had aquired 3-259 "kits" from Don and had Julie Yarbrough build them for around $1000 each. I also had her build a 281 "kit". I put those in the 200 along with my 208 and 218 from my Music Easel. She also refurbished the other modules for around $2500 or so. I then aquired two more 259's from David Kean for $5000. I eventually sold the original Buchla built 259's (for what I paid) because the "kit" 259's sounded, worked and looked better.

I had Peter Grenader build a Milton for the Buchla. This was around $2000. I also bought a 221 touch keyboard from Kean for $4000.

I used the system for two years or so and got an offer I could not refuse for it, minus the Easel and Milton, for $46,000. I took it. I then sold that same cat my Milton for $1750. I also sold the Moog 15 for $7500 and the 960 extension cab, MINUS the Bode, for $5500.

I sold the Bode to a very persistant gentleman in California for....$6,000!

So let's do the math:
I bought-
large Moog $13,500
Moog filter bank $1750
Moog 921 bank $2000
2 Moog 15 cabs $500
Buchla restoration/modules $5500
Buchla 221 $4000

Total $27,500

Traded a Moog 55's worth of modules for the 200.

I sold the Moog 15 for $7500. Sold the extension Moog cab for $5500. Sold the two Buchla modules for $11,500. Sold the Bode for $6,000. Sold the big 200 system for $46,000.

Total $76,500

I still have the Easel. I also aquired a mint Moog 35 last year, so I still have a "rig".

I hope this brings everyone up to date on my Buchla 200/Easel and financial gossip.

Guido"

moog in Tokyo

flickr By lorenzog.

Not 100% sure, but based on the tags in the flickr shot, this one appears to be a Moog modular in Tokyo. Isao Tomita in the background. If anyone can verify where this is at feel free to comment or shoot me an email.

And one of my favorite YouTube videos (don't miss it): Isao Tomita - When you wish upon a Star

Update via the world of next tuesday in the comments: "Yes, this is Tomita's first of two Moog systems, the System IIIP along with a rare Moog Scale Programmer in front (As I understand it the regular Moog keyboard has fixed resistors for the notes, this either replaces or augments them with pots). I believe he is still actively using his augmented System 55. As far as I know this one is on display at a University. Tomita has taught master classes many years and set up a program called The Tomita Method. You can see his other Moog set up for use http://www.tomitamethod.com/index.htm I see that site seems to have stopped being updated in 2009. It is (or perhaps was) a graduate program at Shobi University near Tokyo. I would think he's still teaching there at minimum since Shobi's website continues to mention his 2011 albums under 'what's new'"

followed by: "Oh, while I've been unable to confirm it, I would assume Tomita bought this system since its more or less the one seen on the cover of Switched On Bach. A slight bit of irony because that was not Carlos' actual system for the cover photo shoot. Tomita still tells the story about how Japanese customs impounded his newly bought Moog for a lengthy time as they could not determine what it was."

keith's psychedelic breakfast - Moog System 55

Published on Aug 6, 2016 100 Things I Do

"This weeks clip is something a little different. Last night at The Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio (MESS) I had a few hours to explore the Moog System 55. Everything you hear in this clip was generated during that session, the sounds were then cut and trimmed this morning and assembled as you hear them in quasi concrete style. Effects used are Logic's ring modulator and as always Eventide's Black Hole. The video I took during the session came out pretty rough do to the Florissant lights so its more a montage than my normal clips. Hope you enjoy! Thanks also to Ross for hosting of the evening and Shane for some added noodle flavor :D"

Mammoth 5MU System With Many Extras - Smegmar The Medicant & Sysyphus

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

List of modules at the listing and captured below.

"Large-format modular system offers: 40 modules of various brands and 150 Synthesizer.com modules. In addition, there are various power-related modules, mounted in the front and the rear.

The system is 275 MU’s front face panels spaces plus 32-more in the rear. Featuring: 27 full-range multi-waveform oscillators, 12-filters, 3 discrete MIDI interfaces, and 4 sequencers. ( not including the Matrixbrute features)

It has taken over a year to purchase and assemble all of the modules: this system is completely ready to use. Most of this system is housed in solid walnut cabinetry.

There are a few modules I bought in used condition, but the rest are new purchases. The cabinetry, controllers, and cabling are all new. After assembly, this system has not been moved, exposed to smoke, or touched by anyone but me.

The entire system is in excellent condition, with a couple of VERY minor scuffs where modules have been periodically installed and/or relocated...

History: I first purchased a Moog System-55 re-issue modular. I discovered Synthesizers.com when doing a simple google search. I learned their clone of the Moog Dual Sequencer Compliment wing was not only superior to that of the Moog’s, it was nearly 1/3 the price. So from there, I bought a System 66 and A/Bd both the tonal and functionality aspects of each to discover the Synthesizers.com sounded better to my ears, had more functions, and was more stable. I sold the Moog, and steadily expanded the system it is today.

I am 100% satisfied with this system.

It would take upwards of 6 months to get all of these modules (and a couple of these you may not able to get at all) and a significant amount of time to install and wire the modules, and assemble the large manual binder.

It also took 2 full days to convert 16 of the modules into their revised versions, yet I have not added the price of the conversion kits to the list below."

Living With The Moog Sound Lab

via the Moog Music newsletter:

"The Moog Sound Lab is literally moving into one of the bedrooms at the Ace Hotel in London for an entire month of Moog-ing. Six artists will each spend four days (and nights) cosied up to the equipment which will conclude with a live performance of their creations in the Ace's basement space, Miranda.

This special UK iteration of the Moog Sound Lab includes over 20 analog Moog handcrafted instruments, including one of the newly reissued classic System 55 Moog modular systems and some aural muscle from Bowers & Wilkins 805 Diamond speakers.

The UK Moog Sound Lab will be on tour across the pond for the rest of the year, allowing artists to experiment with the largest collection of Moog analog synthesizers outside of the the Moog Factory.

The full Moog Sound Lab residency at the Ace line-up is as follows:
