deejayiwan Terror from the Moon & Disco Bobo

Published on Feb 28, 2014 Ivan Trajkovic·33 videos

Native Instruments Reaktor sine wave modulated by FX plugin written by deejayiwan. Souds like a sawtooth wave that gets morphed into a pulse wave at the end.

And a track featuring the KORG Triton for synths and FL Studio for drums:

DRUMAXX SOUNDS

"The Drumaxx percussion modelling instrument gives you total control over 16 physically modelled drum pads that can be routed to independent outputs for external effects processing.

Great, but why should you care when the internet is awash with drum samples? In two words, expressive control. Once a drum sound is recorded, the performance and modulation options are limited to filtering, volume, or similar 1-dimensional effects. When a single drum sample is triggered in a roll, you get the familiar 'machine-gun' effect and it just sounds mechanical. Multi-sampled, multi-layered drums can overcome this limitation but need multi-megabyte or even Gigabyte! drum libraries. Even then, you are still limited to the sounds originally recorded.

Drumaxx is not based on samples or even commonly used 'synthesis'

techniques, where oscillators are mixed and the result is always 'electronic'. Drumaxx uses modelling algorithms to create bass drums, hi-hats, snares, realistic and electronic sounds too. But what about the traditional 'Achilles' heel' of synthesis, cymbals? Drumaxx creates cymbals and metallic percussion also."

Roland MJX-70 ?

This one is in via @deejayiwan

Photoshopped JX-8P?  Looks like someone grabbed the Retroactive MPG-70 logo.

Update via the comments:

"It is real and one of a kind, I know, I built it myself. That photo was a test photo for the 3d printed keys. The end result has blue keys.
It is a JX8p redressed to match the MPG70 and MKS70. (and other roland gear in that style).
If you watch my video (link below) from some time back you can see it at 2:35. :)

Mystery Synth in Norwegian Vintage Synthesizer 70's and 80's Dreams Full Album

video upload by Kaj Roger Willumsen

This one was spotted and sent in via Ivan Trajkovic aka deejayiwan. Note the video is from 11 years ago so not AI. Could be a render for a soft synth or other though. Could be DIY, but note the touch panel or screen. According to the YouTube comments "Picture is only for cover. Not sure which synth it is. Will try to find out." There was no follow-up that I could find after that aside from mention the album itself mainly features Arturia. You can find a list of hardware synths and some harware synth spotting in this previous post featuring Dreamland. If you know what that blue synth above is, feel free to leave a comment at the bottom of this post, or send email to matrixsynth at gmail.com and I'll update the post with anything definitive. BTW, you can find additonal Mystery Synths via the Mystery Synths label here. There have only been 23 including this one, to date, since 2005. Update: answer in the comments of this post below. That was quick.

Here's the video description for the above:

An Interview with Kubo & Additional Synth Pics

deejayiwan has an interview up with Kubo here.  You might remember Kubo's synth pics from this previous post last week.

"The very sound of an analogue oscillator detuning against another is a thing of inspiration, and often an entire song will evolve simply because a particular sound was stumbled upon whilst tweaking pots and sliders.

The analogue synthesizer for us it the centre of our music. It’s a man made machine that seems to posses a soul, provided you are willing to search for it! As much as our music is about the lyrics and the melody, it is about the exploration of pure synthetic sound."

New Order, BBC2/Radio 1 simulcast ('Rock Around The Clock', August 28, 1984)

video upload by MrMartinPipe

Two Sequential Circuits Prophet-5s and two Octave Electronics Voyetra 8s. Emu Emulator there as well as custom trigger pads.

This one is in via Ivan Trajkovic aka deejayiwan.

Video description:

"Here we have - except for the three songs that YouTube has 'flagged up' for removal - the notoriously bad-tempered 'Saturday Live' set that was the legendary New Order's contribution to the BBC's 'Rock Around The Clock' music-marathon of pop videos, live performances and documentaries.
Some of the day's programming - notably, this New Order performance from the bowels of Broadcasting House - was simulcasted on the BBC's Radio 1/2 network, as there was no stereo TV in the UK back then.
This historic programme (New Order's "live radio debut on the telly", according to BBC presenter Richard Skinner) surfaced on an old V2000 tape that was being chucked out (together with the video recorder it was in). V2000 was an unusual (but at the time, technically-advanced) European home-video format, intended to compete with VHS and Betamax. Developed by Philips and Grundig, the now-forgotten V2000 had some cool features - like 'flip over' recording, and noise-free 'trick' playback. Don't laugh - this was a big deal in the early-mid 1980s!
The recording was alas in a very poor state - machine (which needed to be repaired) and tape alike had evidently not been stored carefully. I have cleaned up the visuals as best I can - and the result is not bad, considering that the source material is over 40 years old! Better still, I had the cassette recording of the stereo FM broadcast I made at the time - which I have managed to synchronise to the video.
I have it on good authority that the result is superior to what the BBC holds in its archives (allegedly a ropey off-air VHS copy, with hissy mono sound).

The Oskitone OKAY Analog Squarewave Synth

Oskitone OKAY 2 from oskitone on Vimeo.

http://www.oskitone.com/product/okay-2-synth

This one is in via @deejayiwan. Originally $180 on Oskitone's website, it is now available for $60 on Tindie.

Monophonic, analog, square-wave synthesizer with 2 octaves of keys and octave divider

Monophonic:
Only one note at a time can be played. This is opposed to “polyphonic,” where multiple simultaneous notes can be played.

Analog:
There are no computers, microcontrollers, sound samplers, or anything digital involved. The sound you hear is the sound of a speaker being abused by discrete electronic components like capacitors and resistors and logic chips.

Square-wave:
When its output is viewed on an oscilloscope, its wave resembles a square. It’s a “hard” sounding wave type, great for bass lines, and commonly associated with chiptune music and old video games.

This is the OKAY 2 Synth DIY Kit, and it's just like the original OKAY Synth but now features two octaves of keys and a 1/4" audio out jack. Assembly required. Includes the PCBs, electronics components, and assembly guide.

If you have your own 3D printer, you can print the enclosure, keys, and all the other non-electronic parts yourself. 3D model STL files are available on Thingiverse.

If you want 3D-printed parts included, please note that they will be printed on demand. These orders typically ship within one business week.

Under the hood, it’s powered by an LM555 timer (astable mutlivabratory), CD4040 ripple-carry binary counter/divider (frequency divider), and an LM386 power amplifier. All are the standard circuits you'll see diagrammed in their datasheets.

Monophonic with high note priority
Six selectable octaves and one octave of keys
Satisfying "clicky" tactile switches
Built-in amplifier and speaker
9v battery required, not included"

The One of a Kind EMS Synthi KB1

EMS Synthi KB1 by Digitana from portabellabz on Vimeo.

"Wish a nice background music from the Synthi KB1 will come ;)
Thanks for sharing, Steve !
synthi.co.uk/"

This image was spotted and sent my way via @deejayiwan. I've seen it before so I did a quick search on the site, but only found this previous post. A little digging on the web and I found the video above and a post on none other than x0xb0x creator, Adafruit's blog. According to that post:

"ask.audio blogs about the 2017 recovery of a rare, one-of-a-kind EMS Synthi KB1 synthesizer, a model that never made it into production. This one was made for the band YES in 1971. Digitana Electronics obtained the synth and was looking to document some music history.

'We are pleased to announce that Digitana Electronics has acquired an important piece of E.M.S. history…the E.M.S. Synthi KB1 keyboard. Only one prototype was ever made, for the band YES in 1971.

'The synth never went into production. It has remained essentially unused for 46 years though Steve Howe (YES guitarist) did use it on a track in the first of his ‘homebrew’ demo recordings, some of which featured on the bands albums. We plan to release more photos and audio demos of this keyboard in the future so that E.M.S. fans everywhere can finally hear and find out more about this beautiful and historic instrument.'”

A.I. Experiments: The Infinite Drum Machine

video upload by Google for Developers

"Check out https://g.co/aiexperiments to learn more.

Sounds are complex and vary widely. This experiment uses machine learning to organize thousands of everyday sounds. The computer wasn’t given any descriptions or tags – only the audio. Using a technique called t-SNE, the computer placed similar sounds closer together. You can use the map to explore neighborhoods of similar sounds and even make beats using the drum sequencer. http://g.co/aiexperiments

Built by Kyle McDonald, Manny Tan, Yotam Mann, and friends at Google Creative Lab. Thanks to the London Philharmonia for contributing some sounds to this project. t-SNE animation featured in video by Gene Kogan.

Exelvision Exeldrums

This one was spotted and sent in via Ivan Trajkovic aka deejayiwan. This is the first post to feature Exelvision.

via the Rare & Old Computers blog

"As I said in another blog post I find the computers of the 1980s French company Exelvision interesting and under-appreciated. Not only featured these computers (French) speech synthesis, but it had also one of the most interesting and quirky add-ons of the 80s: a digital drum computer (well, sort of)! Fitting into the naming scheme of Exelvisions products, it was called the “Exeldrums”. It was first sold in 1985 for 1200 French Francs (about 400 USD today)."
