Astra Creative Audio releases Tesseracto 4D MPE Software Synth

Press release follows:

"Astra Creative Audio, the plugin brand of Barcelona producers BLIKO and Phonkid Prod, releases Tesseracto 4D, a wavetable synthesizer for macOS that can be played in the air. Its companion app, Tesseracto CAM, reads both hands through the Mac's camera or an iPhone (Continuity Camera) and turns height, tilt and an open or closed hand into per-note MPE expression, the way an MPE controller would.

Tesseracto 4D

- Wavetable oscillator that travels the table in four dimensions (X, Y, Z and W), shown rotating at the centre of the panel.

- Full MPE: every finger carries its own pitch, pressure and slide; also playable from any MPE controller or a regular keyboard.

- 4D modulation matrix with 3D LFOs and chaos; filter, envelopes, unison and glide; arpeggiator and 4D path.

- Hyper-FX rack: Quantum Folder, Phase Flanger, Chrono Delay, Void Shimmer, Hyper-Stereo Displacer, Hyper-Compressor and Vintage Reverb 70s, in series, in parallel or in a feedback loop.

- 80 presets in 10 categories.

- Version 1.0.0. macOS: VST3 and Audio Unit, universal binary (Intel and Apple Silicon). Licence for life on two computers.

- Tesseracto CAM: macOS 13 or later. Hand tracking runs on the computer: the camera image never leaves it, and the internet is only needed once, to activate the licence.

- Price: €99, taxes included. Tesseracto CAM is included.

One bundle, one payment

- Astra Color Pack: the four compressors (A-2A optical, A-3A leveller, A-2Bus bus compressor, A-76 FET limiter) and the four EQs (A-Pre EQ, A-Channel EQ, A-Program EQ, A-500): €199, taxes included, against €338.80 bought one by one. One licence key activates all eight; macOS (VST3/AU, universal) and Windows (64-bit VST3).

Also coming: from 19 October the A-Vocal FX vocal chain joins the Astra subscription (€9.99 a month or €99 a year, taxes included) with version 1.2.3.

Introducing DMNO ON — Desktop Synthesizer

video upload by UDO Audio

"DMNO ON is the full-featured 8-voice, 2-part multi-timbral DMNO synthesizer in a compact desktop format. Built around two independent analog-hybrid synth engines, it retains DMNO’s highly flexible signal architecture, with each engine featuring our new Dynamic Multi-Core Stereo VCF. Eight creative Play Modes unlock dynamic interactions between the two timbres at the touch of a single control, while its flexible analog and digital audio connectivity make it a truly expansive and immediate sound design sandbox.

The ON System allows players to add an optional synth control unit to recreate the dual-panel DMNO interface, or choose from a range of expansion modules to extend it further and build their perfect DMNO. Play ON!

The New UDO DMNO ON! Desktop DMNO - with George Hearn

video upload by sonicstate

"‪@udo_audio‬ has introduced the UDO DMNO ON, a desktop version of its DMNO synthesizer that keeps the full voice count, the hybrid engine and the multi-timbral architecture while doing away with the keyboard. It is not a cut-down instrument: this is a complete 8-voice, 2-part multi-timbral DMNO in a box measuring 487 x 220 x 107mm and weighing 4.5kg, built around the same two independent analog-hybrid synth engines and retaining the flexible signal architecture of the original.

For anyone who liked the sound of DMNO but did not want another keyboard in the room, this could be for you.

DMNO ONE has the same voice architecture as the keyboard."

The "Easel" Spirit in 3U - A West Coast Eurorack Deep Dive

video upload by Sean Graves

The following is in via Sean Graves, who had the following to say:

"The piece, 'The 'Easel' Spirit in 3U: Rebuilding a Buchla Soul in Eurorack,' documents my five-year journey to replicate the specific workflow and 'soul' of the Buchla Music Easel using a curated Eurorack system."

"This post explores the creative power of 5-step sequencing (the 'migrating downbeat'), the 'origami' of wavefolding via the Verbos Complex Oscillator, and the organic harmonic dampening of vactrol-based Low Pass Gates. It’s a technical yet accessible look at why the West Coast workflow remains the 'holy grail' for performance - based synthesis."

The full write-up follows, with a demonstration of the system in the video above.

The “Easel” Spirit in 3U: Rebuilding a Buchla Soul in Eurorack

The Buchla Music Easel is legendary. It isn’t just a synthesizer. It’s a self-contained performance ecosystem. For many of us, the “Easel” workflow is the holy grail of synthesis. However, instead of chasing original hardware, I’ve spent the past five years rebuilding its specific soul within the Eurorack format. Because everyone deserves a hobby, right?

The Chef vs. The Sculptor
Most East Coast synthesizers work like a sculptor. You start with a massive block of harmonic noise (Sawtooth or Square waves) and carve it away with a filter. The Buchla workflow is different. It’s like being a chef in your own Hell’s Kitchen. You start with basic, “bland” ingredients (sine waves) and spice them up with Frequency Modulation (FM), Amplitude Modulation (AM), your choice, and then fold until the sound sizzles.

My current rig recreates this spirit by focusing on three pillars: Uncertainty, Complex Oscillation, and the iconic Sequential Voltage Source.

Part One: The Modulators (The Brain)
In a true Easel style setup, the Tokyo Tape Music Center 5-Step Sequencer acts as the brain. While most modern sequencers favor 4-8-16-32 steps, the 5-step limitation is actually a creative superpower.

Mapper: map01/12/21 Chaotic Synthesizer Prototype Demonstration

video upload by Ryan Gaston

"A demonstration of map01/12/21, an electronic musical instrument that focuses on random, chaotic, and gestural interconnections between its constituent structures. map01/12/21 has been succeeded by map02/21, which offers nearly identical functionality; this video serves as an archival demonstration of the older prototype.

map01/12/21 combines three modules: the map01 Delta Scan Mapping Interface (a chaotic audio generator), the map12 Windowed Temporal Drag Processor (a dynamically re-writable audio buffer), and map21 Multiple Vector Source + Translation Matrix (a MIDI controller that combines two joysticks, sixteen random number generators, a timing generator, and a data routing matrix). map01 and map12 have been abandoned in favor of the newer map02 Delta Scan Mapping Interface + Windowed Temporal Drag Processor, which combines their functionality into a single device.

This improvisational demonstration highlights many of the unique possibilities of each of its constituent parts; ranging from blasts of noise to whistling tones, stuttered repeats, aliasing, goofy computer-generated bleeps, and gesturally-controlled chaos."

“1998” A Moffenzeef Modular Dial-up Montage | Noise Engineering | Bastl Waver | Elektron Effects

"If you are a late 80s kid or earlier, you are old enough to remember the screeching sounds of 56k modems and AOL trial discs. The year is 1998 and your favorite movie is still 'The Terminator' from 1984. You're on the computer and suddenly get kicked offline because your mom had to make a phone call. This is Dial-up from Moffenzeef modular. It carries all those dial-up sounds at the turn of a knob. Modulate it and you have glitchy drum machine chaos."

Helios Audio Visual Performance Movie

Published on Mar 10, 2015 Altar Records

"Helios - An Audio-Visual Performance Film.

There’s something timeless about the marriage of music and images, with no dialogue. Following in the inspiring footsteps of films such as "Baraka", "Atlas Dei" and "Ashes & Snow", for the last decade Nick Klimenko (aka Chronos) has been carefully curating and combining unique footage in preparation for a similar project. Now at last the results can be seen as video-clips, photos, computer graphics, dance performances and live acts are all woven together to accompany the wonderful ambient music from Altar Record’s "Helios" album ( altar.bandcamp.com/album/helios-24bits ) - reworked & remastered into a stunning cinematic experience.

Get ready to immerse yourself in the beauty of nature, intriguing dance forms, ethnic cultures, hypnotic sand drawings, the far reaches of deep space and the miracles of modern technology -in a world that is our own, and yet far, far removed from the rush and chaos of everyday life.

Ten specially selected artists -unique in their talents- were chosen to team up and work on this project to create six complementary chapters. Themes range from the timelessness of Earth’s cultures and beauty, to the stark brilliance of outer space and beyond; from ancient mystic rituals from days gone by, to the primal forces of nature that continue to awe; and from spiritual practice and faith, to universal human feelings of love and devotion.

This engaging yet relaxing film is a gift, lovingly crafted and offered to the world at large via the internet, featuring the creative talents of the Chronos Project team and their ten years of outstanding artistic output.

The movie is available for viewing directly on Youtube ( www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYBzdCrC7RA ). As a bonus you’ll be getting the free digital release of "Music from Helios Film" in its entirety on Bandcamp (in the format of your choice). Podcast 257: Eric Singer

Published on Dec 16, 2018 20Objects

You can find some of Eric Singer's work featured in the archives here. Be sure to see Part 2 in 20Objects interview with Eric Singer below.

"I'm pretty sure you know Eric Singer's work. Some of his most well-known work includes Pat Metheny's 'The Orchestrion Project', but he's been doing robotic musical instruments for a long time. I remember the first time I saw a video of Eric work - it was the reveal for the Guitarbot, and it was jaw-dropping at the time.

Eric was a maker before there was such a thing, and was doing cool robots when robots weren't part of artistic practice. He was learning machining, embedded coding and electronic design when those phrases were more industrial 'work' than creative 'play'. And he ended up paving the way for all of us.

You can check out his current work at his http://www.singerbots.com/ site.

In this interview, we start the discussion with him about his background, some of his work with Pat (and others), and the process of coming up-to-speed on gear he had never considered part of the 'practice'. We ran out of time long before we ran out of topics, but we'll continue the chat next week.

Enjoy!"

Podcast 258: Eric Singer (Part 2)

Published on Dec 23, 2018 20Objects

"In last week's episode, we just scratched the surface of Eric's role in creating the maker's world we now occupy. So I called him back and we immediately did a second interview to fill in some of the gaps: what were the early days like, how did he actually get the stuff built, why the move to Pittsburgh. This continues the fascinating journey of Eric Singer, and helps us to further appreciate the way he helped shape the electronic music future.

I think it is especially important to consider what was happening during the early 2000's, when computer technology was moving forward so rapidly, and the financial marketplace was in post-internet-boom chaos. Eric kept cranking out the work, teaching dozens of people how to manage their art through the process of hardware and software production, and eventually leading to something as overwhelming as the Orchestrion Project.

Again, if you haven't yet checked out Eric's work, you should: http://www.singerbots.com/

Enjoy!"

Keith Fullerton Whitman Live at Control Tuesday, October 2, 7pm - PAID Event

"Live at Control

Keith Fullerton Whitman
Tuesday, October 2, 7pm
$10

PLEASE NOTE: SPACE IS EXTREMELY LIMITED - TICKETS WILL GO FAST.

Control presents Keith Fullerton Whitman for a live quad performance of two pieces, "Redactions" and "Generators."

Keith Fullerton Whitman is a composer, performer, and recording artist currently based in Melbourne, Australia. Active from the early 90's on while working towards a Bachelor's Degree in Music Synthesis at Boston's Berklee College of Music, Keith began exploring electronic music's many facets, eventually yielding dozens of recordings for influential labels such as Kranky, Editions Mego, PAN, Planet Β΅, Carpark, Room40, Amethyst Sunset, Amish, NNA Tapes, No Fun Productions, Agents of Chaos, Arbor, Digitalis Limited, Ekhein, Heavy Tapes, Rare Youth, Root Strata, and many more.

This evening showcases two pieces, "Redactions" and "Generators," from Whitman's current compositional development, a singular take on "Live Electronic Music" that incorporates an ever-changing, hybrid software & hardware-based system. On the piece titled "Generators," which manifested itself as an album released by Editions Mego in 2012, Whitman explained it was "an attempt to wrest a viable performance-based music out what had until then been a solitary set of sound-design tools. The piece grew out of a frustration with the limitlessness of computer-based real-time synthesis & algorithmic / generative systems vs. their utter failure as performance solutions." Though captured in an album form, "Generators" is largely intended for the live setting. "Redactions" is a more recent performance composition that incorporates thematically & geographically relevant Musique Concrète elements into the modular setup and alongside the framework of "Generators."

The performance will promptly start at 7:15. Once the performance begins no entry will be permitted. Do not be late."
