"A piece created with ‪@SequentialLLC‬ Prophet-10, ‪@MoogSynthesizers‬ Moog One, ‪@NordKeyboards‬ Nord Lead, and ‪@YamahaSynthsOfficial‬ CP-88 — a work of minimal music built from overlapping sequenced phrases that gradually evolve in tone and texture.

All synthesizers are played via MIDI sequences from Ableton Live.

On the Prophet-10, the filter cutoff and resonance are manually adjusted, with the output processed through the ‪@strymon‬ blueSky for reverb.

The Moog One’s EG Amount and waveform Mix parameters are manipulated during playback.

The Nord Lead is processed through the ‪@gfisys‬ Specular Tempus for rich reverb.

At the end of the piece, a deep reverb is added across the entire mix using ‪@ValhallaDSP‬ Valhalla Shimmer in the DAW."

"Similis is a lofi synthesiser that has 6 different presets.

This is an example of the 'chord' preset.
The first control sets the root note of the chord. The second selects 1 of the 10 chords available (5 major variations and 5 minor). The third control sets the volume of the notes that make up the chord except the root. Each of these controls has a CV input.
Here the root note is controlled by the keystep pitch. The VCA is being gated by the keysteps gate out. The volume of the chord notes are controlled using the mod wheel."

"Similis is a lofi chip tune synthesiser that uses basic waveforms to generate it's sound.

Features:-
6 different settings (TYPE) from stacked oscillators to chords to self sequencing.
The setting selection can also be stepped using a trigger/gate signal for some odd patch skipping.

Each control can also has a CV input for connecting external gear.

Settings 1-3 deal with stacked oscillators.
3 oscillators with independent pitch. Sine, Saw and Triangle waves.
3 stacked oscillators. The first sets the root note and the other two are detuned plus and minus from the root.
The two detuned oscillators can be faded in.
Chords. The first oscillator sets the root note. The second control sets the chord (5 major chord variations and 5 minor) The amount of voices in the chord can be altered using switch C. The chord notes can be faded in to give a swell effect.
Settings 4-6. Simple sequencing.
The last three patches are random sequencers. The first is free running. Select between, chromatic, major and minor scales. The range and rate of the sequence can be altered and a second oscillator can also be brought into the sound.
The last two patches substitute the rate control as a mix for other voices. A short trigger signal is needed to tell Similis to choose a new random note/s within it’s selected scale.

The output is run through a 3 position passive LPF which turns into a Low pass gate when the VCA switch is down and a CV signal is connected to the VCA input."

Roland TR-1000 compared to OG TR-808 TR-909

"Quick compare of the new Roland TR-1000 to the TR-808 and TR-909. Not intended to be a shootout, more so side by side examples of how the engines compare.

The TR-1000's 808 engines are all analog in this example. The TR-1000's 909 kick and clap are analog, the hats are ACB.

Recorded from main outs on all machines into Apollo x8 into Logic. Normalized audio, exported uncompressed to AIFF. Finally degraded by imovie and youtube."

Update: some additional info via Antony:

"In trying to match the levels (tuning etc), something that was really apparent was that there originals had nowhere left to go - both the 808 and 909 were set to max on the available settings (other than tone for the 808 was was around 12 o’clock). The TR-1000 had headroom for days across every parameter - decay, tuning etc before you even get to the extended parameters, effects, filter etc

I find in the same room the TR-1000 is crisper, clearer, heavier, punchier. I imagine most folks will be dialing things back to sit in the mix vs adding stuff (i.e. when compared to the originals) to make them do their thing.

I know the originals do what they do, but having played the TR-1000 I find myself wondering why the tuing stops ‘here’, or why I can’t add a delay to the hats, and a compressor to the kick as I’m in the flow with the machine - vs going back to the daw, or having to use separate outs into outboard stuff - it’s all very immediate."

"'Back with another one of those block rockin' beats.....'
I've been searching around for an ideal Chemical Brothers track to recreate on the Circuit Tracks when up popped one of my favourite channels, ‪@smallplatesmusic‬ with a video about this classic 1997 song off the album "Dig Your Own Hole'. I've loved the band since their 'Dust Brother'/Playstation 1 days and this mix of jazz, hip-hop and breakbeats blended with their signature synths is a true anthem. (plus check out another great band, 23 Skidoo's track 'Coup' for possible 'inpiration')

See the video here [below] for his fascinating deep dive into all of the samples used and the history behind them. Highly, highly recommend for any music fan...plus also some great Koala Sample App recreations too!

After commenting I was offered access to the Koala track shown in the video, and many of the samples in this recreation come from that version. Mark this up as my first collaboration on this channel! Huge thanks for the inspiration and help ‪@smallplatesmusic‬

What you hear was all recreated on a single Novation Circuit Tracks with the drum tracks used to sequence the various samples, augmented with synth lines to underpin the sound when needed. It was recorded straight from the audio outs into a Zoom L6 without any extra synths or effects.

I hope you enjoy this as much as I did making it and stay tuned!

"Back with another one of those..attempts to remake a dancefloor classic on my phone.

This early Chemical Brothers banger includes a lot of jazz, funk, soul and early hip-hop samples including Schoolly D’s raw intro, Wilton Felder’s (very technical...) bassline, and Bernard Purdie’s funky drum fills. I have a listen to the sample, tell you some interesting things I found out, then try to rebuild the track using Koala, showing you how it works (more or less).

"Here's another dark and gritty modular synth performance by Chief Noisemaker Stephen McCaul.

The bottom case is a six voice case with Incus Iteritas Alia (2), Debel Iteritas Alia, Tymp Legio, Manis Iteritas Alia, Virt Iter Legio + Ampla Legio.

There is a Librae Legio for the percussion submix (paralleling the main mix) and an Electus Versio on a send. The rhythm sequencing is from an experimental prototype that isn't really product worthy.

Pitch sequencing comes from Opp Ned. And the Xer Mixa mixer ties it all together.

The top case is an effects rig for another project but i used a Fala Versio and a Yester Versio in that case for some additional effects.

All effects can be applied, plus there is one more function: the playback speed can be controlled (in both directions). The wavetable sound engine has been expanded as well, and new effects were added, which will be demoed later.

The Science of Analog Drone Creation

Verbos Electronics has long been recognized for building modular systems that do not simply generate notes but reveal the raw behavior of electricity itself. Exquis enables seamless and natural interaction with all DAW software, MIDI synthesizers, and modular systems by becoming a direct extension of its user’s creativity as an expressive and intuitive MPE controller comprising a hexagonal matrix of 61 backlit soft silicon keys arranged as consecutive notes (semitones) horizontally and harmonious notes (thirds) vertically — from the lowest at the bottom to the highest at the top — that provide independent gestural control over four different dimensions: velocity (strike force), horizontal tilt (X axis — pitch bend), vertical tilt (Y axis — CC#74), and pressure (Z axis — channel pressure or polyphonic aftertouch). Alongside a namesake companion app — itself optionally offering an experience akin to traditional composition software — available on macOS and Windows with support for VST, VST3, and AUv3 audio plug-in formats, Intuitive Instruments’ flagship instrument is intended to provide musicians of all levels with a fun and intuitive way of creating melodies and progressions, fully exploiting sonic potential in the process of doing so — whether working with third-party software over the USB (Type-C) connection, third-party software or hardware synthesizers through the MIDI IN and OUT (minijack) connections, and modular synthesizers via CV (control voltage) with dedicated 0-5V (minijack) connections for GATE (V-Trigger), PITCH (V/Oct), and MOD (pressure or velocity).
