Note: the original YouTube vid has the title as "Suzanna Ciani on 3-2-1 Contact" I usually do not change titles others create, but in this case it was leading to some confusion in the comments so I went ahead and corrected it in the title of this post. The video on YouTube still has Suzanna as of this note as I have no control over that.

Oberheim DX Stretch

via this auction.
Details:
"The DX Programmable Digital Drum Machine from Oberheim fills the professional musician's need for an afford able. easy to use, state- of- the- art drum computer. Based upon the modular Oberheim DMX Drum Machine, the DX offers the sound and features of the DMX in a less expensive, more integrated package . The DX is not a drum synthesizer; it is a complex microcomputer system programmed with digital studio recordings of real drums. It doesn't sound like a rhythm box. it sounds like a drummer. Not only does the DX sound like a drummer, it can play like a real drum mer; with rolls, flams, odd time signatures, uneven phrases, changing tempos, or even off the beat. Up to 2200 notes can be stored in the DX, recorded in any of 100 Sequences of any length or time signature. Drum sequences can be recorded in real time or one note at a time. Any of the 18 individual drums (including crash cymbal) or individual notes can be recorded, erased, and then re-recorded until the drum beat is exactly right. The sequences can be combined to form up to 50 songs. Each song can contain up to 255 sequences, arranged in any order, to form a complete composition. Tempo and Time Signature are programmable for each sequence, and with the DX's extensive editing capability, a song's structure can be changed quickly and easily. The DX has several Quantize modes, which correct your rhythm to any beat between l/4 notes and 1/32 note triplets, or turn the Quantize off for the human feel. In addition, there is a Swing mode which will give rhythms the uneven feel that is used so often in jazz and other music.

There are individual tuning controls for each voice on the rear panel and each of the six DX voices has its own output. so you can record them on separate tracks. or EQ them separately. There is also a 7 input stereo mixer to allow you to mix all of the drums into the stereo and mono outputs. The DX can run in synchronization with the Oberheim DSX Digital Polyphonic Sequencer and the other components of the Oberheim Music System as well as other sequencers. There is a programmable external trigger, so you can control the DX with sequencers, synthesizers. or even a drum kit. A battery maintains power to the memory when the DX is turned off. so that you don t lose your sequences when you turn off power. A cassette interface is provided which enables quick changes of all of the sequences and permanent data storage. original list price $1395.00

STRETCH expander for Oberheim DX drum machines. The Stretch adds the two things DX owners want most of all: more sounds and more features for older model DX drum machines. For those DX machines, features are added like variable clock, auto start, cue tempo, midi clock out & more. Each Stretch voice has its own buttons, tuning, output jack and level control for the mixed output of the DX. Zif sockets are included to make it easier to add new sounds, containing chip locations for 4 more rows. original list price $495.00"

Via Dreamaiden in the comments of this Create Digital Music post:

"Photos are take of the front, sides, and back. These have to be positioned just right, for example, the front has to be straight up and down exactly. The photos are then saved as .bmp or .jpg files and uploaded into SL where they become 'textures.' Then, 'prims' are created. Think of these as 3D physical MB. Like other 3D modeling programs you can create 3D shapes such as a box or ball. In this case, you create prims that are the shapes of the parts of the synth. Then you simply put the texture on the various parts and get it just right. Finally, you link them all together and violá, you have a synth. I recently had someone create the keyboards in my studio - the Andromeda, Karma, and Virus. You can see them on this page.

You are right. There are now various music stores that have lots of synths in them and more are springing up all the time. In fact, complete music studios complete with with sound are there too, some quite sophisticated.

Cheers,
Susan Baird

Synth Wiki on Sequencer.de and The First Synth To...

Remember this post on the first synths to introduce something new? In the comments, the world of next tuesday suggested putting it in a wiki. I agreed and said I'd eventually do it. My main concern was putting it on a wiki that made sense and wasn't going anywhere soon. I thought of Wikipedia, but that didn't make sense as there isn't really a unified Synth section, Synth Wiki ended up getting overwritten with spam, and I did not want to start up my own wiki. I then remembered Moogulator of sequencer.de set up a bi-lingual synth wiki in German and English. I asked Moogulator about putting up the synth list. He set up an account for me and it's up. Title link takes you to the new home for the list, however obviously check out the rest of the wiki for more info on synths. You can join and add as well as edit content. If you want to add to the list of The First Synths To... but do not want to join the wiki, my original post will stay up. Feel free to comment there and I will update both my post and the wiki, however the wiki will become the uber list as updates to the wiki will most likely not make it back to my post. That would be too much work for me to maintain and the wiki really is a better home for the list. I will update my old post with a link to the wiki article and I'll add a link to the wiki on the right of my site so you know how to get there any time. Thanks Moogulator!

Gary Chang and Neil Leonard Illuminate Sacred Spaces in Italy

Via the Grant Richter of Wiard on the Wiard Group:

"During the month of June, 2007, notable composers Gary Chang and Neil Leonard will visit several sites in Italy with the task of completing 5.1 installations of a program of music entitled "Sanctuaries," which are meditative ambient analog electronic music pieces composed by Chang and realized on a Wiard Modular Music System, specifically designed for playback in churches and other public locations.

The tour is sponsored by Sguardi Sonori 2007, Festival of Media and Time Based Art, for which Leonard is a also a curator.

The cities in the tour will include Rome, Benevento, Torino, Venice, San Galgano and La Spezia. While in La Spezia, Chang and Leonard will also have access to the Naval base, where there are very large rooms (indoor drydocks for warships, for instance) and other interesting ambiances, such as marble quarries and museums, where further explorations in unusual ambient spaces will be recorded and cataloged.

Utilizing Blue Sky Monitors and extensive Taralabs wiring at each installation, each
location will be recorded using a Soundfield SP422B mic, which is a recording system that can yield from mono up to a 7.1 playback. Recording will be achieved using a tcelectronic Konnekt Live, interfacing to a laptop computer and portable firewire drives. In addition, Impulse Response data will be collected from each of the locations to create a library of interesting convolution reverb spaces for McDSP's Revolver.

Following the Italian journey, Chang and Leonard will give many presentations on the
project, including a workshop presented by GASP Gallery in Brookline for senior students in electronic music at Berklee College of Music.

This project would not be possible without the generosity of sponsors, who include The City of Rome; The City of Venice; La Marrana - environmental art park, (for graciously coordinating recording and installation sites during a week long residency in La Spezia); Sguardi Sonori 2007, Festival of Media and Time Based Art; Blue Sky Speakers; TaraLabs Cables; tcelectronic digital audio interfaces and processors; The Wiard Synthesizer Company; Transaudio Group/Soundfield Microphones and The Berklee College of Music.

Confirmed Schedule - (Actual locations to be announced).

June 12/19 LA SPEZIA
June 20 ROME
June 21/22 BENEVENTO
June 23/24 TORINO
June 26/27 VENICE
June 28 SAN GALGANO (Installation includes "Echoes and Footsteps" by Neil Leonard in addition to "Sanctuaries")
June 29 - July 4 LA SPEZIA

SANCTUARIES
An installation by Gary Chang and Neil Leonard
San Galgano, Sienna, Italy

NOTES: GARY CHANG
The music entitled "Sanctuaries" that I have composed for installation in churches is designed for such an environment of spirituality and meditation. The musics are ambient in quality, designed to fill the space with warmth and emotion, but never does the musics every confront the visitor - though there is some abstraction, the dynamics of the pieces are quite controlled, never overtly dramatic. In the best of all things, I am hoping that the music installation will simply be another contributor to the specialness of the Church's ambiance - my special prayer in the space. In loving memory of Diana Lee Chang.

NOTES: NEIL LEONARD
Echoes and Footsteps is a reflection on the sound of Italy, where I lived and work for much of 2006. The primary sources are the sound of cowbells recorded in the region of Lazio, and the songs of workers celebrating the end of the work day in the Palazzo di Ragione market in Padova. The pointed gestures of the bells and bursts of cathartic song were transformed using time-stretching and delay techniques. The resulting composition evolves in slow motion and outlines large sonic contours that celebrate the essence of daily life as I head it while living here.

GARY CHANG SHORT BIO
Sound artist and esteemed film composer Gary Chang worked his way up through the LA
studio musician ranks playing with the best musicians in the country (e.g. Robbie Robertson, Herbie Hancock and Weather Report, Barbara Streisand and Henry Mancini,)
later to compose music for many eminent filmmakers (including John Frankenheimer,
Jonathan Demme and Stephen King). Few composers have mastered such a wide range of
musical genres that Chang has (orchestral, electronic, installation, jazz, soundtrack, dance). Chang is a protagonist in the field of music synthesis. He has recorded on and programmed almost major every hardware and software synthesizer over the last thirty years, built dozens of custom systems, and designed a personal studio that is optimized for recording synthesizers in multi-channel and high definition audio. Chang won the National Endowment for the Arts Grant for Jazz Composers while attending California Institute Of the Arts. Chang is a pioneer in the use of 5.1 surround sound in cinema, concert and installation settings.

NEIL LEONARD SHORT BIO
NEIL LEONARD is a sound artist, composer and saxophonist. His compositions are a
synthesis of concert, improvised and electronic musics that transcend categorization. Leonard's recently premiered works include Dreaming of an Island for orchestra, electronics and live-video (performed by Kirk Trevor and the Indianapolis Chamber
Orchestra), Totems (performed by Byron and Caine at Carnegie Recital Hall in New York City), and the music for Relatives (by Tony Oursler and Constance DeJong that was featured at the Whitney Biennial). His collaborative work with visual artist Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons was featured by premier venues for modern art including 49th Venice Biennial; Museum of Modern Art, NY; and presented by the U.S. State Department at DakArt/Dakar Biennial in Senegal.

Leonard is co-owner of Gallery Artist Studio Project GASP and curator of the GASP sonic arts series in Boston. His ensemble has featured Marshall Allen (Director of the Sun Ra Arkestra), Bruce Barth, Dave Bryant, Don Byron, Kenwood Dennard, Robin Eubanks, Frank Lacy, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, and Uri Caine.

Neil Leonard is an Associate Professor in the Music Synthesis Department at Berklee
College of Music.

Roland System 100

Click here for shots via this auction.

Details:
"The System 100 is a great and classic analog synth! It's a beautiful semi-modular monophonic synth consisting of 5 module components:

Synthesizer 101 SERIAL No. 500950

Expander 102 SERIAL No. 490688

Sequencer 104 SERIAL No. 510691

2 Monitor Speakers 109 SERIAL No. 500870 & 500871

The Synthesizer 101 section is the heart of the system, from which you could add-on any of the other modules of your choice. Different combinations of these components can be used to create systems of varying potential.
the Synthesizer 101 section is a fully self-contained analog mono-synth. It features a 37-note keyboard (with no performance controls, velocity or aftertouch), and lots of sliders to tweak. Its design is similar to the SH-series analog synths. Controls for the VCO, LFO, VCF lowpass/highpass filters, VCA with ADSR, Noise, and Portamento/Glide effects are all within hands reach. There's also a handy A-440Hz tuning oscillator, like on the Minimoog.

The Expander 102 section is a keyboard-less version of the 101, designed to stand upright and behind the main Synthesizer 101. More than one Expander 102 can be added to make your system fatter and fatter! The Expander is identical to the Synthesizer except that it replaces Portamento/Glide effects with a Sample-and-Hold feature for the LFO, the Noise gen. is replaced by a Ring Modulator, and the A-440 tuning osc. is replaced by weak/strong sync inputs and a mix-in jack. The Expander is an excellent way to add more oscillators and synth effects (the s&h and ring-mod) to a System 100. The oscillators can be synced if you have both modules. The 101 & 102 are already internally patched and ready to produce sounds, but that can be bypassed by external patching.

The Mixer 103 is a cool add-on. Features 4 inputs and 4 sliders, and mixes these down to 2 outputs. There are two analog VU meters (a nice touch) as well as panning, mono effect sends/returns, and a built-in spring reverb! The Model 103 is designed to sit on the right side of the System and feeds the Monitor Speakers. The speakers provide a stereo monitoring source which is another great (optional) touch! The Mixer not only has outputs for these speakers, but also Line-Outs for use live or in the studio! On the left side of the System sits the Sequencer 104. This analog sequencer can be used to drive your System with a 12x2 step pattern sequencer. It features variable gate time, series or parallel modes, Start, Stop, Continue, and Step buttons."

Hiromi Live Report via Brian

In case you missed the update to this post. Via Brian in the comments:

"I missed the Tuesday night show, but I caught the Wednesday one...WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I feel it is my duty as a Matrixsynth frequenter to report on the keyboard aspect of Hiromi's performance.

Gear: Nord Electro 2, microKorg, and a Nord Lead 2. The Korg and the Lead 2 were sitting on top of this truly massive polyphonic analog monster made by...Steinway??? Maybe it was a spin off from Steinberg.... Anyways as far as synthesis is concerned, no envelopes were pushed...mostly square wave leads with LOTS of really good mod wheel and pitch bender action. The Nord Electro 2 electric piano was very expressive, going from soft and sweet sounding to harsh and overdriven like "that"!

Technique: This woman has AMAZING chops! I know in this blog most people are concerned with synthesis parameters, component specs, range of "that knob". But when you hear someone that can really play, it doesn't matter if it's a Casio POS or MIDI'ed CS-80 with the sampling option- they can make ANYTHING sound great!

The rest of the band: Hiromi is no show hog. The bass player and drummer have been with her for about four years and they are the definition of tight. The bass player plays a HUGE 6 string electric bass with about 10 pedals that have lots of blinking LEDs. His playing style reminds me of Les Claypool from Primus...very fast fingering and quirky progressions. The guitarist has only been with the band for TWO WEEKS, but shared the spotlight with Hiromi more than any of the other band members.

I did get her autograph but at the time I couldn't think of any keyboard related questions, so I just said "You were REALLY good!" Duhhhhhh...but at least I saw some kick ass jazz (are those terms ever used together?) by one awesome keyboard player!"

Well, you could have said, "Hey don't you just love Matrixsynth?!!!" Hah! Just kidding of course. ; )"

MASA's Lyricon Analysis - Electronic Analog Flute

Title link takes you to the original site in Japanese. Here's a link to the Google translated version.

"“performing in the orchestra, was the idea like the electric flute which is audible sufficiently in the hole”, so is. It has started from the place where it tries probably to reproduce the performance method of the wooden bobbin musical instrument and the constitution of the timbre electrically. Being afterwards, appeared, become constitution of the general analog synthesizer VCO, VCF and VCA…. whichWith there is no similar point yet, changes harmonic overtone constitution and on the other hand, it can call with the point which does the sound making that it has been similar to [dorouba] of the organ. At this point in time as for [ririkon] of the first generation [ririkon] II which it mentions later, formation differs from [doraivua] completely."

TEXAS INSTRUMENTS LANGUAGE TRANSLATOR SPEAK & SPELL

via this auction

"ULTRA RARE - Texas Instruments Language Translator and Cartridge. Made in 1980 and famously used by Kraftwerk on the Computer World album. Follow this link for more info. This is an utterly cool piece of retro kit. Bright green fluorescent display, TI's famous robot voices, runs from 4 AA batteries or a standard ac adapter, has a built-in speaker, audio output and volume control. But, if you are looking at this then you probably know all about it anyway. This one works perfectly, is in great condition and complete (including battery cover). As well as the voice functions (spoken words, phrases and letters/numbers that you can type in) it also makes all the usual blips and beeps like the Speak & Spell and other similar TI units. The only minor cosmetic faults are a couple of small indentations on the metal grille covering the speaker. These could be easily removed with a bit of care. Originally designed for word and phrase translation, it can translate between French and English, Spanish or German in either direction, and is complete with the French voice cartridge (tres sexy!) and a printed copy of the manual. I will also include a set of new batteries."
