chipPad 1.1 Beta Demo from earsmack on Vimeo.

"Visit earsmack.com/ for more info

Here is a quick little jam with one of my demo tunes using chipPad 1.1 beta 1. Hopefully in a few days this update will be submitted to the app store. Please excuse my lack of rhythm in the middle :-)

Changes in this version include:

- Tracks no longer mute (until the next quantize point) when re-triggered, now they keep on playing and it sounds much more musical
- There are per-track mute and solo buttons on the Mix page (that are saved with the session so you can start tracks out muted or soloed)
- Track numbers, mute group numbers, mute/solo status and track audio file name are now optionally displayed on the playing surface
- Microfades are applied to audio to avoid clicks when musically appropriate. The more you play towards the top of a cell, the more the microfade will occur. Play towards the bottom of a cell to apply less microfade. You can hear this about half-way through the video where I have the bottom-most (from my perspective) track playing and I'm moving my finger up and down the cells.
- Whenever you quit the app your current configuration will be saved so you won't lose your work by accident.
- Various other optimizations and tweaks.

Please send your comments and suggestions and follow us on Twitter @earsmack for updates. Thanks for all the great support!"

Peavey Spectrum Synth Demo #2

YouTube via stuthomson — April 24, 2010

"Released in 1995, the Spectrum Synth Digital Module was a marketing failure due to the tedium required to program it with the PC1600 slider panel. Sliders were not labelled and you had to scroll through menus. No software was released with it. Has 4 oscillators and over 100 waveforms (no kidding). No internal effects so this recording was made using a Lexicon chorus with a touch of reverb. I took down my demo #1 'cause it was mono and it sukt." Part 1 here

Roland MC-202 with MIDI and Original Box

via this auction

"It has midi professionally installed which lets you run the MC202 off your midi sequences instead of having to tediously program with the internal sequencer. Everything works perfectly and it looks great as well. Comes with original box! Nice collector's item. The midi upgrade along costs $250, and Mc-202's regularly go for up to $600. See pictures below.

Have midi installed in this is great, it gives you several improvements.

There are two midi modes:
Mode 1 Regular CV - you can run both cv/gate in and out from the 202. The 202 keypad works.
Mode 2 Midi mode channel 1- runs the mc202 with the midi AND lets you use it as a midi-cv converter. CV in is disabled in this mode and the keypad is disabled. The best part is portamento will be in effect if you turn the knob and trigger it with midi (similar to what an sh-101 can do if you run it on cv/gate).
Then each time you press the little button on the front, the assigned midi channel goes up 1. So if you are in mode 2 and press the button 3 times, midi in is received on channel 4.
To reset to mode 1, you hold the button for a couple of seconds.

The only downside is there is no compartment for batteries, as that's where the midi was installed, but considering the added midi-cv capabilities, it's not a big loss. Also, when triggering the mc202 with an external cv/gate, I find there is a slight delay in the note, which I have read is due to the internal wiring which goes through a microprocessor. The midi in solves this issue as it triggers the notes right away.

Power supply is not included, but it runs off any standard 9v adapter."

Derek Revell's EMS VSC3 Clone Project

Full details on Derek Revell's website. PCBs are now available if you'd like to make your own EMS Synthi A or VCS3 clone.

The bottom image here is the clone.

"I have made the clone , using the dimensions of the original VCS3 they are H 44cm x W 43cm x D 42cm.

The panels sizes are upper W 40cm x H 32cm x 2mm and the lower panel is W 40cm H 30cm x 2mm.

The VCS3 clone is complete on 16/03/2010, but needs fully calibrating, as there are some differences with the pots and internal wiring.

I was fortunate enough to obtain the almost complete circuit diagrams of the VCS3/Synthi A, unfortunately there are so many errors in the drawings, compared with the actual circuit boards, and the internal wiring of the patch panel and front panel potentiometers that I decided to completely re-draw the originals, a very time consuming task, I have also finished the track layouts of the three main PCB's."

lofi diy slinky spring reverb experiment - with shs-10 and Noise Hero

YouTube via ChrisLody — April 24, 2010 — "Sorry for the volume fluctuations and distortion in this video, i did my best to even them out a little.

I had a play around with this after finding this article on how to build it:
http://www.nicolascollins.com/texts/T...
From here:
http://www.nicolascollins.com/

The video show the dry output of the keytar and Noise Hero then wet through the diy reverb , which is basically just a slinky taped to a speaker with a contact mic mounted on it but it can make some pretty cool noises which remind me of the reverb in old dub records. Sounds pretty good with drums going through it which i forgot to do here. I found i got the best results with the mic near the speaker as quite a lot of the dry sound makes it to the contact mic and mixes with the reverb. Also i found it best to gather enough of the slinky at the top to allow space between the coil at the bottom to prevent any resonant rattling. It can make some very star wars like sound effects when manipulating the spring by hand too.

The Dirty-Carter E.S.G.I. and a few friends

flickr by Chris_Carter_

"A quick shot of the new Dirty-Carter Experimental Sound Generating Instrument while putting it through its paces. It's sitting next to a circuit-bent Korg Koassilator and a Bugbrand Postcard Weevil, the rest are listed in the Flikr tags column on the right.
Sound and video clips to follow soonish... and it will be on sale later this year.

Tech details:
The Dirty Carter Experimental Sound Generating Instrument uses a dual 4-stage shift register. Each register is controlled independently. Two oscillators are used per register: one as a clock, the other as input data that is cascaded through the four stages. The outputs from the stages are mixed together. A fast clock rate produces a crude form of wavetable synthesis, whilst a slow clock rate creates audible pulses and clicks. The clock speed and the data input’s frequency are controlled by touch electrodes/pads. By tilting the instrument, sound from both the 4-stage shift registers can be mixed together. Glitchy noise, deep drones and percussive peeps!

ElectricSun ‘I Love Acid’ T-shirt

via ElectricSun
"Cast your mind back, if you can, to 1988 and the (second) ‘Summer of Love’. Illegal parties were being hosted in inconspicuous venues up and down the country and the headline-grabbing acid house phenomenon was everywhere. Drug use and police raids fuelled negative press coverage, but the psychedelic sound of acid house had a defining role in the development of electronic music and became a part of music history.

Rather than focusing on the narcotic, this ElectricSun T-shirt is dedicated to the machine that made it all possible over 20 years ago – the Roland TB-303. The unique squelchy sound of the 303 dominated the latter part of the 80’s club and rave culture, and still continues to appear on tracks to this day. As well as acid house, 303 basslines could also be heard on more radio-friendly tunes such as Shannon’s ‘Let the Music Play‘,

Heaven 17’s ‘Let Me Go‘,

and Orange Juice’s ‘Rip It Up‘."
