"Gearing up for Wednesday's monthly in dt San Jose. I've been trying to make the most of the small synths, as it makes for a very portable situation. With only one effect on one sound, it is all very close to the circuits and raw.

Production notes: A dawless jam run on battery power alone. Roland SH-01A, Korg Volca FM, Meeblip Geode, @1010music Blackbox, and Sensel Morph. The Roland is going through a @MerisUs LVX delay. I found the cheap and compact "G-MARK" mixer from AliExpress for frighteningly cheap. It does a darn decent job, and is crazy small.

There are a couple battery packs - a 150Wh and a 99Wh. I ended up using the 2nd because the blackbox was making too much USB noise when everything was plugged into the 150Wh. There was still quite a bit of noise, but the Izotone RX-8 does a good job cleaning that out."

I wanted to make sure everything still works ok before putting it up for sale, and while doing so, I got inspired by the factory patterns to pair it up with my 'Dub Techno Deep Dive' sound bank for the 1010 Music Blackbox Sampler/Groovebox and make some housey nineties inspired beats.

"We are pleased to offer blackbox 3.0.7 firmware. Version 3 is a significant step forward for sequencing, songwriting, and arrangement.

Each of the 16 sequences now have 4 layers. You can sequence and switch between all 64 layers for more advanced songwriting. You can now double a sequence. Double will double the length and content. Double allows you to write in smaller sections and extend as needed. The new Song mode can have up to 32 song scenes per preset. Song scenes can control sequences, Clips, Slicers, Granular samples, and one-shots. Scenes can be looped within a song. Songs mode now has 2 loop modes. You can loop a single scene or the entire song. You can also trigger each scene individually using MIDI notes.

MID-only sequences are now fully independent of internal Pads. MIDI routing has been redesigned. You now have more complete control over MIDI input and output. You can selectively route MIDI in, out, or thru the blackbox. You can enable or disable the USB Device port, and have total control over how clock + transport is sent and received.

"Another rarity from the halls of EMEAPP, here we have the ultra-rare RSF Blackbox from the late 70s. While it doesn't look like much on the outside, it is capable of a pretty amazing task: it can turn a monosynth into a polysynth by using it's CV/gate output. Intended as a peripheral device for the RSF Kobol monosynth, the Blackbox is compatible with a plethora of other vintage monosynths. In this video, electronic music pioneer Don Slepian will demonstrate the Blackbox's capabilities as a stand-alone instrument.

"Inspired my the one of my favorite tracks, i wanted to play with the idea of layering multiple acid style basslines and bringing them in and out using the looper function on the 1010 blackbox. I'm realising i do something similar in my live setup. I'll take multiple midi sequences and send them all to the same synthesizer (ex. [Dawless Live Set below]) Anyway, this turned out a lot cooler than i had hoped! Also, running a straight forward analog monophonic subtractive synthesizer through some FX can REALLY help it go a lot further."

"We're looking at a pair of desktop synths (also mountable in Eurorack) from Cre8Audio - as in previous releases, these are made in collaboration with Richard Nicol from Pittsburgh Modular - he knows how to make great sounding Oscillators, Filters and Wave folders, in fact the core technology of the East Beast (subtractive single VCO synth voice) comes from the VCO, VCF and VCA of the SV-1 Blackbox - which we think sounds pretty fine. The West Pest however has the VCO, Wavefolder and Dynamics from the highly prized Voltage Research Laboratory System - with a rich Wavefolder and resonant Low Pass Gate for a more West Coast sound."
