Haken Continuum / EaganMatrix - Jenny Oscillator Basics

video by EaganMatrix Programming

"A discussion of the operation and programming of the EaganMatrix Jenny Oscillator (pronounced "Genie") that is included in post 9.0 Haken Continuum and ContinuuMini firmware. The Jenny Oscillator is synced to a Master DSF Oscillator. It has its origins from that used in Georges Jenny's Ondioline (invented 1941), though Lippold Haken has added a number of extensions to this new digital implementation (the only digital model known to be available). Christophe Duquesne had the original idea and with Lippold and Ed Eagan they worked on and implemented this wonderful new addition to the EaganMatrix, ideal for creating a wide variety of reedy timbres with complex harmonic spectra."

Haken Continuum / EaganMatrix: Using the ContinuuMini as a W,X,Y,Z Eurorack CV Controller

video by EaganMatrix Programming

"Demonstrating one of an almost infinite ways to use a ContinuuMini with Evaton Technologies uCVC as a four degree of freedom (WXYZ) controller for Eurorack systems (though it could be used this way with any system that uses CV input to manipulate sound parameters). Here the Mini primarily controls a TiNRS Tuesday Sequencer and Rabid Elephant Natural Gate that are really 'running the show' (not ContinuuMini pitch and envelope control). EaganMatrix CVC programming is used to impart a much more complex CV interaction that would be possible with a traditional XY CV (for example joystick) controller. Note with only a ContinuuMini and a uCVC, you will ideally want to set your preset Polyphony 1 to avoid discontinuities when playing polyphonically which is not the intent here but you might do it without realizing it (not using ContinuuMIni audio output at all here)."

Osmose key feature: Pressure-weighted Portamento

video by Expressive E

"Haken Audio's advances in the development of integrating their EaganMatrix sound engine with our Augmented Keyboard Action have made it possible to bring an exclusive feature to Osmose players, a feature that was previously only available on the Haken Audio Continuum Fingerboard: Pressure-weighted Portamento.

This patented technology takes advantage of the sophisticated sensor technology within each key of Osmose's Augmented Keyboard Action: A player can define a pitch interval within which two keypresses are interpreted as a legato line instead of polyphonic playing. Unlike regular portamento that makes the pitch glide to the last note's pitch within a fixed amount of portamento time, the Pressure-weighted Portamento reacts to the pressure ratio between the two notes. The pitch will dynamically glide between the notes in real-time, always reacting to how the player distributes pressure between the two notes.

Controlled pitch slides, slow, expressive glissando, and subtle to dramatic vibrato effects are now immediately available at your fingertips! Pressure-weighted Portamento is like the ultimate powerful performance pitch wheel that doesn't even require a second hand to play it."

Haken Continuum / EaganMatrix - Four-Note Arpeggiator & Using ContinuuMini with uCVC/CVC

Haken Continuum / EaganMatrix - Creating a Simple Four-Note Arpeggiator - EaganMatrix Programming

"Experimenting today creating a simple four note Arpeggiator in the EaganMatrix. This preset lets you define four tones that are settable in real time using the i, ii, ii and iv controls. Four notes are always played but you could vary that with extra programming. Y induces some octave shifts and a fifth too that you can press with multiple fingers to play the tones polyphonically at the octave - but the tones themselves are not produced by X (but by the controls). Added Speed control and put a couple continuous pedals on two of the controls to change the pitch sequence with your feet. But the real fun comes when you connect a Keith McMillen Softstep 2 and program chord changes - as the Softstep lets you change all four of the i, ii, ii and iv controls together with the press of a foot or hand. I added some balloons as well to summarize the few steps used to create the preset."

Haken Continuum / EaganMatrix - Using ContinuuMini with uCVC/CVC (Control Voltage interfaces)
EaganMatrix Programming

"Discusses how to connect and use a ContinuuMini (also Half/Full and Slim Continuums) with the Haken Audio Continuum Voltage Converter and especially the Evaton Technologies uCVC for playing Monophonic synths and modules (though playing polyphonically will be similar - just use more CVC channels in parallel with preset Polyphony set greater than 1. Here using a Moog Slim Phatty as the instrument being played by CV - but could be any synth or Eurorack or other module that accepts CV inputs. Also introduces EaganMatrix CVC programming that is essential in using CV with non-standard CV interfaces."

Haken Continuum / EaganMatrix - Using Continuum as a Digital Sound Procesor

EaganMatrix Programming

"Short video to demonstrate how to connect up external audio to be routed into the Continuum to be processed using the EaganMatrix - here functioning as a reverb/delay processor on an unprocessed Synthesis Technology E370 Quad Morphing VCO (but could apply to any Analog source you convert to AES and send into the Continuum). Of course you can do many things with that AES input besides just applying the Recirculator to it in addition to combining it with EaganMatrix sounds (a follow on video will cover more advanced ways to process the external audio)."

Haken Continuum / EaganMatrix - Modifying Existing Presets (Vivaldi Largo)

EaganMatrix Programming

"Experimenting with taking a couple of the most iconic EaganMatrix presets and modifying them to suit the needs of a particular piece - here Vivaldi, but the idea of starting with existing presets and modifying them is where you should begin your EaganMatrix study. Here the "Tin Whistle" preset is transposed down and octave and the delay lines returned to be best suited for a soprano/sopranino recorder. A bit of breath is added and the Y based octave shift is removed to make it easier to play as a recorder. The bass line takes the "VlnVlaVlcBass1" preset, removes the string noise to allow a second String Harman to be added a bit detuned and optionally shifted down an octave with added delay. The overall effect is to turn the original solo string sounding preset into a more orchestral version which sounds very nice in the low register. (Camtasia seems to have made the video a bit out of sync with the audio recording but you get the idea)."

Haken Continuum/EaganMatrix - Morphing WaveBank Pad & Morphing Church Organ Demos

EaganMatrix Programming

"Another morphing preset I'm working on. This one morphs in various ways between two WaveBanks, one set to Saw and the other Square. Shape Generators (SGs) are used to move in and out of the two banks at different rates and there is a bit of shifting between them on Y as well. A big analog Echo is added with additional dynamic convolution change imposed under SG control."

Haken Continuum/EaganMatrix - Morphing Church Organ Demo
EaganMatrix Programming

"Working on a bunch of Morphing Presets for Haken Continuum / EaganMatrix. This one is an organ model that randomly cuts in partials. A pedal controls the speed at which the partials kick in and a separate control is set to Pedal 2 that brings in a Sub-bass and octave beneath the Fundamental (which can be statically set for two octaves below or a fifth below if desired). A small amount of detuning is also used that creates a bit of beating adding more dynamic motion."

Haken Audio Control Voltage Converter CVC SN F290-40

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Ultra Fast Communications The CVC is built around i2c chips which communicate directly with the Continuum at 400kHz data rate. High Resolution Unprecedented pitch bend support of 8 octaves (96 half steps pitch) at full Continuum output resolution (1 cent), with 16 bit DA converters on all individual control voltage outputs. Output Filtering The Continuum updates parameters at a much higher rate than a standard keyboard. Finger pressure update rate is so fast that the updates can make an audible pitch on a standard Midi-CV, requiring external filtering. The CVC has been designed with this in mind, and as such requires no external filters for noise suppression. Midi Data Playback The CVC can output control signals originating from data fed to the Continuum's Midi input. This allows a Continuum performance to be captured and played back from a Midi sequencer into the CVC. Customizable Depending on your analog synthesizer, you will have particular preferences for voltage ranges of each output on your CVC. The CVC can switch between different voltage set ups at any time through special interaction with the Continuum playing surface or the Continuum Editor. The Continuum Editor also allows the creation of custom setups. Formulas Each of the CVC's 16 control voltage outputs has a user programmable formula. These formulae are derived from continuous input combinations of the four main performance parameters of a Continuum note: The Gate, the X (left to right), the Y (front to back), and the Z (up and down) values."

SB20 Karusell home alone

Published on Apr 22, 2020 Alex4

"As part of the SuperBooth20 Home Edition we have found a temporary home for our beloved modular karusell in the Große Hamburgerstrasse 36 in Berlin Mitte at the gallery gh36 operated by Adam Chalk.

Our vision is to provide a privat space for everyone to explore the karusell and the surrounding instruments, such as the Haken Continuum as a field of experiementation and exploration.

Wether you are based in the modular scene, the intrumental side of music making or DJing does not matter. You can pick up your intrument and feed it through the karusell or run your vinyl collection through it. Many different scenarios are possible. One can always record their sessions and take them home. It is also possible to play a gig for the street as we have installed a speaker on the outside of the gallery. To set up a privat appointment contact Mr. Adam Chalk via ac@gh36.de. Up to two people will be allowed for each session.

There is no general booking fee required while a small donation to the gallery is welcome."

ContinuuCon 2020 Set for April 27-29 In Palmela, Portugal

"ContinuuCon 2020, the fifth annual international Haken Continuum Conference, will take place on April 27–29 in Palmela, Portugal. Musicians and technologists describe the Haken Continuum as the world’s most uniquely expressive electronic musical instrument. As in previous years, ContinuuCon 2020 will extend an opportunity for Continuum players, sound designers, software developers, and electronic music enthusiasts to explore the Continuum Fingerboard and ContinuuMini through performances, workshops, lectures, and more.

University of Illinois professor Dr. Lippold Haken and Canadian film and TV composer Edmund Eagan developed the Continuum, the ContinuuMini, and their internal sound engine, the EaganMatrix, over decades of collaboration. Both men will be on hand throughout the event and will be joined by numerous other authorities to share their knowledge and musical expertise.

On April 27, just two days after Superbooth ends in Berlin, the conference will begin with a reception for attendees followed by a public concert at the Theatre S.Joao in Palmela. For the next two days, master players and authorities on the Continuum will give presentations and demos at the Palmela Public Library.

This ContinmuuCon will be the first opportunity to hear Expressive E's Osmose played together with Continuum -- both of these instruments have fast and accurate continuous sensing, both incorporate the EaganMatrix, and yet the difference between keyboard and continuous surface makes them very unlike each other. The performance by Edmund Eagan (on Continuum) on stage with Piano and Continuum virtuoso Rob Schwimmer (on Osmose) will be a historic not-to-be-missed event.

About Palmela

40 kms South of Lisbon, Palmela is a land of contrasts. Located between the estuary of the River Sado, and the hills of the Serra da Arrábida, It has been inhabited since pre-historic times due to its privileged and strategic location. The Castelo de Palmela overlooks the city from a commanding position, and down a steep hill lies the charming historic centre. Palmela is Music – In the community, Music has a prominent place in the daily lives, where the act of creating and re-creating springs organically. Palmela, presents nature, heritage, gastronomy, award winning wines, arts and crafts and the beautiful beaches of the Arrábida, making it an excellent place to welcome the ContinuuCon event.
