Moog Releases Model 15 Modular Synthesizer for iOS

Published on May 3, 2016 Moog Music Inc

Now available on iTunes: Model 15 - Moog Music Inc.

Update: a quick note worth mentioning from Quincas Moreira who beta tested the app: It's a "brand new engine, they even worked directly with Apple to improve the ios's handling of heavy audio processing like this. Geert Bevin, the Dev, has said there is no dynamic voice allocation as this is a modular, all modules are constantly running, just like on a real one." You can find a list of Quincas Moreira's presets in the comments below.

"Suzanne Ciani, one of the first and most influential female electronic music composers and synthesists, creates a short sonic sketch using the Moog Model 15 modular synthesizer app. Ciani explores the custom-programmed sounds she designed in the app alongside Moog technicians as they hand-build the app's hardware modular namesake at the Moog Factory in Asheville, NC.

Listen to Suzanne's full composition here:

Ciani's unique patches are available as a free expansion pack in the Model 15's in-app store.

The Moog Model 15 App is an iOS version of the iconic 1970’s instrument. It is designed to evoke the joyous experimentation and sonic bliss of it’s predecessor’s vintage hardware, the Moog Model 15 App meticulously recreates the look, feel, and sound of its highly expressive analog namesake."

"The Moog Model 15 is a remarkable reissue of Moog's vintage touring synthesizer, with only 150 of these Limited Edition models available globally. This modular synth has been precisely reconstructed from the integrated vinyl-covered travel case to the hand-soldered components. It presents a unique opportunity for contemporary composers and performers to explore the rudiments of subtractive synthesis in a vintage format.

The Model 15 comes equipped with 14 finely-crafted modules, among which are three oscillators and the 907A Fixed Filter Bank. This latter module is particularly noteworthy for its massive sound-shaping capabilities, providing unique synth effects. The Model 15 Limited edition reissue offers boundless potential for sound design, with three Moog oscillator modules that support oscillator sync, two envelope generators, two voltage-controlled amplifiers, and a noise generator module with pink and white noise outputs. It also includes the 995 Attenuator module for creative gain control of audio signals and control signals.

The 907A Fixed Filter Bank module is a distinctive feature of the Model 15, enabling you to segment your tone into distinct frequency bands. This enables real-time manipulation of knobs to generate evolving, atmospheric soundscapes, or layer the filter bank over a base oscillator to emphasise specific timbres. This versatile synth module offers endless creative possibilities.

The Model 15 synthesiser has been meticulously constructed to the same exacting specifications as of the original 1973. Moog engineers spent over three years scrutinising the original documentation and rediscovering circuit board and art for every module. The limited run, coupled with Moog's dedication to authenticity, ensures each component has been hand-soldered using traditional wiring methods. Furthermore, the photo-etched aluminium panels and vintage-style cabinetry provide the perfect finishing touches to this faithful reissue. Includes all original cables, incredibly detailed hard cover manual & lid for tolex-cased enclosure. In excellent condition."

Moog Announces New Modular Systems for 2015 with Back to the Future Sounds Documentary

Back to the Future Sounds Published on Jan 19, 2015

"On January 19, 2015 Moog Music Inc. announced their plans to recommence a limited run manufacturing of three of their most sought after 5U large format modular synthesizers: The System 55, the System 35 and the Model 15. These three modular synthesizer systems were originally created and manufactured by Moog in 1973.

To commemorate the announcement, Moog shot a short film at their factory about the inspiring and multifaceted relationship artists have with modular synthesizers. The video features electronic music pioneers such as Suzanne Ciani, Malcolm Cecil, David Borden, Dick Hyman and Herb Deutsch alongside performances on the new Moog modular systems by Holy Ghost! (DFA Records), Gavin Russom (ECSTATIC/Entropy Trax), Max Ravitz AKA Patricia (L.I.E.S./Opal Tapes/ Spectral Sound), Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith (Western Vinyl), Jacques Greene (Vase/LuckyMe) and M. Geddes Gengras (Stones Throw/Leaving). Each artist played a patch on one or more of the new Moog modular synthesizers recorded in one take with no overdubs."

Suzanne Ciani | System 55

Published on Jan 19, 2015

"In this video, electronic music and sound design pioneer Suzanne Ciani explores the Moog modular System 55 for the first time in decades. Ciani came to the Moog factory in Asheville, NC to play the first System 55 newly handcrafted by Moog in over thirty years. The patch, created and performed live, was shot in one take and features a sequence designed on the 960 Sequential Controller that's driving three 921B oscillators into a 904B High Pass filter whose cutoff is being modulated by a 921 oscillator. A second set of 921B oscillators is also being played manually into a 904A Low Pass filter whose cutoff knob is also being modulated by the 921 oscillator. The resulting sound of each is then sent through its own dedicated MF-104M analog delay for ambience. The audio has been captured directly with no eq, compression, or editing applied."

And the press release:

"ASHEVILLE, NC – January 19, 2015 — January 19, 2014 Asheville, NC: 50 years ago, at its first introduction, the Moog modular synthesizer represented as radical a transition as Kandinski’s abstracts or Kodak’s cameras – offering both a break from yesterday and a startling glimpse of tomorrow. And, as with all cultural explosions, the impact of Dr. Bob Moog’s invention was impossible to evaluate from the epicenter. It’s only now, 50 years down the line that we can get some measure of the importance, and the sheer untapped potentiality of the Moog Modular Synthesizer.

Today, it is with great excitement that Moog Music Inc. announces their plans to re-commence the limited run manufacturing of three of their most sought after 5U large format modular synthesizers: The System 55, the System 35 and the Model 15. These three modular synthesizer systems were originally created and manufactured by Moog in 1973.

To commemorate the announcement, Moog shot a short film at their factory about the inspiring and multifaceted relationship artists have with modular synthesizers. The video features electronic music pioneers such as Suzanne Ciani, Malcolm Cecil, David Borden, Dick Hyman and Herb Deutsch alongside performances by contemporary modular artists like Holy Ghost! (DFA), Gavin Russom (ECSTATIC/Entropy Trax), Max Ravitz AKA Patricia (L.I.E.S./Spectral Sound/Opal Tapes), Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith (Western Vinyl), Jacques Greene (Vase/LuckyMe) and M. Geddes Gengras (Stones Throw). Each artist played a patch live, in one take, with no overdubs on one or more of the new Moog Modular systems.

The foundation for this announcement was laid last year at Moogfest 2014, when Moog released the Emerson Moog Modular system – a faithful recreation of Keith Emerson’s legendary modular instrument, which was the culmination of three years worth of research and engineering. Now Moog will use the techniques learned recreating the EMMS manufacturing process to once again build these modular systems. Crucially, in deference to the unique character and appeal of the original instruments, these systems will be made entirely to their original product specifications and manufacturing techniques and processes.

Working from the 1970s schematics, the System 55, the System 35 and the Model 15 will be meticulously handcrafted, as a true recreation of the original. The modules are built from the original circuit board films - just as they were in 1973- by hand-stuffing and hand-soldering components to circuit boards, and using traditional wiring methods. The front panels are photo-etched aluminum, a classic process rarely still used in today’s synthesizer manufacturing, to maintain the classic and durable look of vintage Moog modules.

Upon their first release in 1973, the System 55, the System 35 and the Model 15 represented a high watermark for modular synthesis, and their inimitable tones can be heard shaping many much-loved albums. They were fundamental in the development of contemporary soul, RnB, and disco from giving Stevie Wonder’s classic run of 70s LPs their questing, innovative edge, to providing Giorgio Moroder with the pulsating machine melodies that ushered in electronic dance. At the same time, these were the instruments that inspired Brian Eno to push further out into seas of layered tranquillity on his pioneering ambient albums, or provoked bands like Yes and Tangerine Dream to blast their sonic freak outs into the cosmos.

However, the reintroduction of these instruments is not about reliving the past – while much incredible work has been done with the Moog Modular, there is so much further yet to be explored in this relatively young instrument. Artists had only begun to grasp the vast possibilities of these large format modular synthesizers when they went out of production over thirty years ago. Decades of electronic experimentation have enabled musicians to move on from viewing the Moog Modular as a replacement for traditional instrumentation. Now a new generation of artists, with a greater understanding and more complex tools, will have the opportunity to explore the power of these singular sonic machines. Today, the modular synthesizer is viewed in the manner Bob Moog originally intended: to “discover endless offbeat, unconventional, and even irrational ways of working.”

The dedicated nature of the Moog modular rebuilding process is such that the units will come in extremely limited quantities. There will be 55 units of the System 55, priced at $35,000 per instrument; 35 of units of the System 35, priced at $22,000 per instrument; and 150 units of the Model 15, priced at $10,000 per instrument.

Alongside these Moog Modular Systems will be the Sequencer Complement B Expansion Cabinet, a dual 960 Sequential Controller, an accompaniment to the System 35 and System 55, that has been out of production for over 30 years– as well as an optional 5-Octave duo phonic keyboard."

Update: video renamed to Moog Model 15 BASICS & CLASSICS: 100 free synth patches by Fabio Ribeiro

iTunes: Model 15 - Moog Music Inc.

"The brazilian keyboard player, musical producer and sound synthesis instructor Fabio Ribeiro (Remove Silence) created the BASICS & CLASSICS collection, bringing 64 patches for the Moog Model 15 app for iPad and iPhone.

This free collection presents classic and famous synth sounds created using only the original features of the classic Moog Model 15 analog modular synth, without the new features of the app or delay.

In addition to demonstrating the versatility of the original synthesizer, the purpose of these patches, mostly, is didactic, illustrating how sounds of different classes can be created through subtractive synthesis in a modular synthesizer. Also included are some classic patches from keyboard players and bands like Rick Wakeman, Yes, Triumvirat, Rush, OMD, The Prodigy, Camel, Uriah Heep, etc.

Model 15 + Eurorack

Published on Jul 3, 2017 chisel316

"This is a demonstration of integrating hardware (Eurorack) and software (Moog Model 15) together in a patch. I'm using AUM and zMors Modular on the iPad to setup the Audio/MIDI Bridge plumbing, respectively. I'm also using Midiflow to remap CC16-19 since those are the Model 15 MIDI Bridge CCs that were conflicting with the Novation Launch Control XL which I'm using to control Model 15. The Ardcore is running FlexArp by rockwoofstone which is sending a 1V/Oct signal to Model 15 through the MIDI Bridge (zMors converts the CV to MIDI). I'm using the Model 15 oscillators and filters and the Kraftzwerg's LFO and envelopes. The PEG is providing the master clock. Lastly, the Expert Sleepers ES-3/ES-6 combo is providing the gateway between the hardware and software using a Behringer UMC 1820 as the audio interface. Hope you enjoy it!

The SYNTH-WERK Model 15 can serve you in many ways:

IN THE STUDIO
Make your Model 15 the center of your recording studio and upgrade your modular synthesizer setup with a sound that cre- ated legends. Except for phone-plug-size 5U-modules are by the way fully compatible and patchable to Eurorack Systems, so it ́s not about adding another niche, it’s about expanding your own musical eco-Model and let it grow.

ON STAGE
The SYNTH-WERK Model 15 is a powerfull performer, longing to be used live on stage. Whether you will use it with a sequenc- ing-unit or a keyboard, be assured to have some outstanding sonic possibilities right there at your fingertips. Playing this won- derful instrument is more like talking to an old friend, analogue to that time and space being second-tier – so: enjoy!

The Synthesizer 15 build from 1974 on, equal to its numbered 12 and 10 predeces- sor, was a landmark of craftsmanship.

Likewise its forerunner, the SYNTH-WERK Model 12 is considered an extraordinary example of a supreme and compact com- bination of 5U-tools with explicit portability in mind. Every single unit is composed from a careful selection of the finest prime parts available. At heart it relies on our latest achievement in successfully recre- ating the versatility of the 921 Oscillator in every aspect imaginable, resulting in a SW921A Control Unit combined with two SW921B-Oscillators, alongside an indepen- dent SW921 module.

Compared to the puristic design and mu- sical rawness of its ancestor, the SYNTH- WERK 921 unfolds its capabilities likewise in a much more sophisticated and grownup manner, accompanied by increased tonal flexibility. This is mainly obtained by careful observation of the original build and meanwhile rethinking the whole circuit to produce a VCO that sounds as good as the original. Therefore we respectfully integrat- ed only highly accurate parts and authentic NOS parts, following the original circuit design without any compromise!

The units are extended by a classic SW903A Random Signal Generator as well as the voltage controllable famous lowpass Ladder Filter model SW904A which imparts essentially every audiosource imaginable with its unique character.

More sound sculpting possibilities are implemented with a SW907A Half-octave Filter module that is capable to come up with some structural and flexible formant shaping, not at least due to some integrated custom made high-class inductors. Besides dynamic modulation the two SW911 ele- ments can be used to describe the contour and envelope of the resulting sound by targeting the SW902 Amplifier or as well controlling the SW904A Lowpass-Filter. Regarding attack and decay times you can choose from the same luscious bandwidth like its reference from two milliseconds up to ten seconds.

It is worth mentioning, that you can decide to go for a custom configuration containing the advanced SW914 Fixed Filter Bank, a MIDI/CV Interface or any other configura- tion you desire. The SYNTH-WERK Model 15 ships perfectly embraced in a tolex cov- ered replica of an original Moog Style trav- el-enclosure with front lid and an integrated well-spaced custom power supply unit.
