Erica Synths Introduces EDU DIY SNARE DRUM

Designing a simple analog snare drum from scratch

video upload by Moritz Klein

"No drum machine is really complete without a punchy, snappy snare. Together with the kick, it creates the rhythmic backbone for most grooves.

So in my ongoing quest for creating a Roland-inspired modular drum machine, I knew I had to come up with a snare circuit that would complement the kick and hi-hat I‘ve already designed. After a lot of fine tuning, I landed on a circuit that can emulate a TR-606, TR-808 or TR-909 snare."

No drum machine is really complete without a punchy, snappy Snare Drum. Together with the Kick, it creates the rhythmic backbone for most grooves. So for our percussion-focused second season of educational DIY kits, we knew we had to come up with a Snare circuit that would complement the Kick and Hi-Hat we’ve already released. After a lot of fine tuning, here’s what we came up with: introducing mki x es.edu DIY Snare Drum.

Features
Manual and CV controlled Tune
Tune CV depth attenuator
Manual Attack and Decay control
Manual and CV Snappy (noise and tone crossfade) control
Accent input

We – Erica Synths and Moritz Klein – have developed a series of educational DIY kits under the brand name mki x es.EDU with one specific goal in mind: to teach people with little-to-no prior experience how to design analog synthesizer circuits from scratch. What you’ll find in the box is not simply meant to be soldered together and then disappear in your rack. Instead, we want to take you through the circuit design process step by step, explaining every choice we’ve made and how it impacts the finished module.

NB! All kits in these series are simple and come with extensive user manuals which can be downloaded separately, therefore we will not provide customer support in case your DIY build fails to function or similar.

Bébé Chérie by OTO Machines

video upload by OTOMACHINES

"Bébé Chérie is a 6-channel stereo analog mixer with a one-knob compressor and a Bliss enhancer on the master bus. https://www.otomachines.com/product/b..."

"Bébé Chérie is a 6-channel stereo analog mixer with a one-knob compressor and a Bliss enhancer on the master bus.

The first 4 channels offer a variable input gain (up to 34 dB) with an asymmetrical diode clipper for smooth and musical distortion.
The Tilt pot is a simple yet powerful one-knob equalizer : boosting the lows while attenuating the highs when the pot is turned down, attenuating the lows while boosting the highs when the pot is turned up.
When the Tilt pot is in its center position, the equalizer is flat.
The rear panel switch selects the type of inputs : TRS for stereo sources and TS for mono (the signal is center panned).

The last 2 channels include a 2 bands Baxandall equalizer, the input gain can be set between 0 and +10 dB using the rear panel switch.
There’s no distortion on these 2 channels so you can use them when you want to keep a clean sound.

The compressor has a 3:1 ratio with a fast attack and a mid release times, perfect for mixdown compression.
Very easy to operate, it will give you good results with many kinds of music styles.
The Bliss pot controls a hi frequency enhancer circuit and is very useful for adding air and punch to your mix, specially when your using large amount of compression.

Whenever a channel is muted, the signal is routed to the Alternate output. You can use this output for recording purposes or for sending the channel to an external effect.

The Phones output is based on an unity gain, low noise and low distortion Texas Instruments© amplifier. This output is a copy of the master output (with compression and Bliss), so you can also use it as a second output.

Bébé Chérie uses the best quality parts : ALPS© pots, high-performance operational amplifiers, audiophile Panasonic© film capacitors, THAT Corporation© VCAs, Switchcraft© 3.5 mm connectors, metal enclosure.
The power supply is internally boosted to +/- 12 volts for pro audio headroom.

Bébé Chérie is specially designed for mixing 3.5 mm stereo Jacks sources, but can be used with any device using adapters.

Bébé Chérie is a very versatile box and can be used in many ways : mixer for compact live, analog summing for your audio interface, effect box (distortion, equalization, compression,…)

SoundForce Introduces SFC-OB Class-Compliant Boutique Oberheim OB-Style Hardware Controller

via SoundForce

"The SoundForce SFC-OB is a class-compliant boutique USB MIDI controller dedicated to OB-style synth plugins.

Features
With 37 rotary pots, 41 switches and 45 LEDs, you can finally control your virtual instrument in an instinctive and fun way. Create better synth sounds easier and improve your overall experience. A couple of extra “USER” controls are available to be freely assigned to additional parameters, for example Reverb size, Delay time, DAW FX sends levels. etc… The controller sends out standard MIDI cc messages and can be used with any software that is MIDI-mappable. A web-based control panel app allows the user to change the cc messages number for each control, change the MIDI channel and load the different plugin modes.

Plugin modes
Although the controller can be used with any software that can be mapped to MIDI CC messages, the SFC-OB has been specifically designed to work with the most popular OB-style synth plugins. Set the controller to the right plugin mode using the control panel. This will ensure that every switch on the SFC-OB is fitting the plugin used as well as possible. For more information, please check out the manual on the support page.

Build quality
The controller is assembled in The Netherlands with parts from Europe and Asia. It is built to last and withstand intense usage on tour and in the studio. SoundForce has an excellent track record for its controller line, with many units built and very little registered issues and repairs. The enclosure is made of 100% sheet metal and is manufactured by Grawart (http://www.grawart.pl). The case is made of bent steel and powder coated in black. The front panel is aluminum, also powder coated and screen printed with scratch-proof white and blue ink. Walnut wood side panels of 8mm thickness are fitted to both sides of the controller. On the electronics and firmware side, the controller is powered by the same STM32 Cortex-M micro-controller platform used successfully in previous products, insuring a very high level of compatibility with different computers and DAWs. The devices have been even used successfully with iPads.

2-way/1-way communication
As with previous controllers, users can enjoy 2-way integration using the latest Arturia OP-Xa V. This means that the controller interface can be updated when presets are changed in the plugin, when plugin instances are switched or even manually on demand. The controller even accounts for discrepancies between a plugin pot-position and a controller pot-position, and implements pick-up or smoothing modes to avoid juming values. This allows for an improved and tighthly integrated workflow. Other traditional 1-way MIDI CC mapping is available for the brand new GForce OB-X, SonicProjects OP-X PRO-II, DiscoDSP OB-Xd and Synapse Obsession. Those modes, even though more limited, still offer a fantastic new hands-on experience for virtual synth users.

Pricing and Availability
The SFC-OB is available on the SoundForce webshop for 399 euros incl VAT (exact price will depend on your local VAT %) in the EU and 329 euros for customers outside the EU. Perfect Circuit will be distributing the SFC-OB in the US, Signal Sounds in the UK, Cicada Sound in Canada and Dupertuis in Switzerland. Please get in touch with your local distributor for pre-ordering/ordering and pricing information."

Artist Picks: Best Music Gear of 2023 Part 2

video upload by Perfect Circuit

Part 1 here

"2023 is soon drawing to a close—so, we're taking a look back at the year, and taking account of all of the weird and wonderful instruments that gave us some inspiration this year. Synthesizers, drum machines, and Eurorack modules to samplers and effects, this year had no shortage of inspiring instruments.

So, we reached out to some of our friends and content creators to fill us in on their year, asking one simple question: what was the coolest piece of gear you got this year? For some, that meant brand new releases, but for others, it meant sitting down and digging into classic instruments.

In this video, we hear from:
00:00 Red Means Recording on the Elektron Syntakt
01:07 Midlife Synthesist on the Akai MPC X SE
03:20 DivKid on the Intellijel Cascadia
06:30 Jorb on the Roland S1

J3PO OBERHEIM OB-X8 Presets: Future Vintage OFFICIAL SOUNDS DEMO

video upload by J3PO

"In this video, Julian demos the 64 presets included in the "J3PO OB-X8 Presets: Future Vintage" for the Oberheim OB-X8.

You can buy these patches for your OB-X8 from https://www.julianpollack.com/shop/j3...

This demo was recorded dry straight to Pro Tools, with no external FX, save for some light compression and leveling for the purposing of uploading to YouTube. What you hear is what you get! Of course, users are encouraged to add their own FX, such as chorus, reverb, delay etc. to the sounds. Please see my upcoming video '20 minutes of beautiful OB-X8 & Strymon soundscapes' to hear some of these sounds in context.

There are 64 patches in this preset library and they will load to patches 'OB-X: Groups 8-16' on the OB-X8. The introductory sale price is $39 (normally $45).

The library covers a lot of sonic ground, ranging from ultra vintage Oberheim sounds to tones that fit right into contemporary production. The Oberheim palette is the sound that originally got me into synthesizers (the OB-Xa) and it’s such a joy to have a re-issue of one of the world’s most beloved synthesizers. I hope you enjoy these sounds as much as I enjoyed creating them!

I also have patches available for the Prophet 6, Prophet 5/10, Prophet Rev 2, OB-6, Spectrasonic's Omnisphere, Arturia OP-Xa, Softube's Model 72 & 84, XLN's Addictive Keys Mark One and a free bank of 50 sounds for the free VST synth 'OB-Xd' — all available on my website. If you're a Nord Stage 3 or Wave 2 user, download my bank from the Nord Keyboards website."

Sonic Projects OP-X Pro-II - Sound Bank '79

video upload by Polydata

"Drawing from the earliest days of polyphonic synthesizers, Sound Bank ‘79 for the Sonic Projects OP-X Pro-II plug-in finds its inspiration in synthesizer music found in documentaries and library music from the late 70’s and early 80’s.

A bank comprising 30 patches for instant inspiration. The goal was to squeeze as much vintage analog juice out of this plug-in as possible, primarily working within the constraints of the original Oberheim OB-X analog poly synth. This plug-in sounds SO GOOD. There are some awesome plug-ins out there that are each great in their own way... this one really has a remarkable authenticity and realness to the sound that is incredible.

Sound Bank '79 is a series of vintage tones for different synths and plug-ins, so check out my other releases. Recorded completely dry with no external effects or processing.

Streetscape and OP-1 Field 🌿 Excruciating Minutiae

video upload by Postmodern Machine

"🏢A streetscape in San Pancho Mexico with Soundtrack🏡

I was lucky to film so much on my Honeymoon in Mexico. There was beautiful movement all around. In some cases I captured sound using my Fuji X-T30 and Oade Brothers micro mics that I have had for many years and pulled out for the trip. 🎤

I made a piece of music focusing on the OP-1 Field string synth. I pre planned using the Chase Bliss/Meris CXM 1978 on the final mix, so did not overdo the layering. I used the endless sequencer to create some repeating patterns and the mono delay to add some slow repeats or in some layers the spring reverb to each recorded sound. I used the Studio tape emu for the first time. I have been finding the noise/hiss on the other emu's compounds in a not so flattering way. This is something I hope TE refines in a future update. Tape his should not compound with each track recorded onto it, and it would be nice if the hiss level could be controlled.

I used the new FW update to the field with velocity sensitivity built into each sequence and I used the new record panning feature while committing ideas. The bass was performed live on the keyboard into the field while playing the other layers through the CXM 1978 and my outboard into the DAW. In Reaper, I added EQ, compression and filtering. Filterfreak creates a unique rhythmic pattern that adds a lot of interest to the high frequencies of the piece. The street sounds were added once I had decided this shot would fit the best with the music. Some verb and volume automation was added to the streetscape sounds. While mixing I accidentally sped up the OP-1 tracks in reaper by about 20% due to changing the tempo, but after noting this and comparing to the original speed, I liked the faster version more and decided to keep it.

Pics of the inside below.

According to the listing:

"Rare Chroma Polaris multi-timbral analog synth in near mint condition. Rev 9 firmware with maxed out sequencer memory ( 4 X factory)

The Polaris is a highly under rated synth. It has a vintage analog sound along with the flexible MIDI implementation of a modern synth. This synth was ahead of its time obscured by the digital craze at the time.

SOFTPOP SPII: OMEGA dB x BASTL Instruments (with patch notes)

video upload by Bastl Instruments

"We collaborated with OMEGA dB on some audio samples for our SPII.
You can have a look at his patch notes at our blog here: https://bit.ly/3CsR92i

Few words from Omega dB and patch download: https://bit.ly/3CsR92i

I’m very excited to collaborate with such an innovative brand as BASTL Instruments, which helps many artists to achieve very special and unique sounds. I was lucky to explore in-depth at the amazing SPII Softpop Synthesizer. I've tried a lot of synthesizers. But I've never tried anything like it before. It's a small but mighty sound design tool. As BASTL says: “Softpop SP2 is a radical subtractive synth under the influence of unconventional digital control. It’s a rare beast that excels at both melody and noise in equal measure.” I totally agree with these words.

In this video, I made some patches to make it sound in different ways, in it sounds raw, with its character, using the native sequencer, slide, and scales. In others, I've added external processing with some of my favorite FX pedals, which gives it another kind of character. I also sequenced it with OP-Z's sequencer via midi, receiving clock, and pitch.

The video was recorded before the firmware update. The new firmware makes it an even more powerful tool, with new oscillator waveforms, and more features. So even more creative.

From Barcelona to Brno with love.
