RYK Modular - M185 Sequencer

video by SchneidersLaden

"The RYK M185 Sequencer rethinks the concept of 8-step sequencers by adding different options for how every single stage behaves – it can be handled to program ratcheting, short or long gates, pauses or repeats and the like. So, allowing each step to be repeated by up to 8 times and additionally defining how this repetition will be executed, really opened up the initial concept of a simple 8-step sequencer. Each step can perform 8 unique gate modes for creative rhythmic possibilities: off, one gate on first repetition, gate on every second/third/forth repetition, probability, tied gate. If you set the sequence length to 16 or 32 for example, you can fill these steps with unique patterns in no time.

With the addition of A/B split mode for two separate sequences and implementing MIDI I/O the concept of this sequencer was taken even further. Especially its MIDI capabilities qualify this module to be used with all kinds of synthesizers in your studio, not only your modular.

This video shows you example sequences made with the M185 and some parts show you the process of programming simple to complex sequences. This is a very hands-on module with great potential for creating new ideas quickly and it seems to be ideal for live performances with a tendency to improvisation."

Testing Eurorack TB 303 Acid Setup Style

Published on Nov 24, 2017 Sound Provider

"I m testing for a future 'Leonard de Leonard' Live and tracks a Roland Tb303 acid style Modular synth setup.
For this setup in my Doepfer case I use the Metropolis Sequencer from intellijel.

For the sound I use the M303 from acidlab through the crazy Strakal Brulu Fuzz and the Make noise Echophon Delay.

For modulation I use 2 Ornament and crime, One is in Sequins mode to trig the Accent and the slide of the M303 and the other is in Mata -q mode to add 3 octave from the metropolis to the M303.

I use also a 4MS pingable Envelope generator to modulate the M303 filter.

I still have to improve this setup but I already like it a lot, it's very fun to play. If you have proposal or question fell free to say it.

For this video I did a very quick drum line with drum shot from the http://www.sound-provider.eu/ Analog Sound banks

Some world from schneidersladen about the Modular synthesizer is use:

Acidlab - M303:
The M303 is an entire synthesizer voice and to be exact a clone of the TB-303´s analog circuitry in a single Eurorack module. Imagine it as a modular vesion of the Acidlab Bassline without the sequencer but with aditional CV inputs instead.

Intellijel Designs - Metropolis:
Very intuitive eight-step sequencer inspired by the RYK-185 project. It shines with different trigger modes, glide, rest and skip per step, it has swing, a quantizer and a clock generator but the most wicked function is that each step can be repeated before proceeding to the next one. Combined with adjustable length per step you get an instant Techno generator! An awesome machine.

TouellSkouarn - Strakal Brulu Koavonek:
Directly from the Brittany in beautiful France comes the Strakal Brulu, a handmade distortion and fuzz module. The great sound is due to the new-old-stock east-german germanium transistors.

Make Noise - Echophon:
The Echophon flips the script on the trend of software based emulation of analog gear! Tony Rolando from MakeNoise and Tom Erbe from Soundhack prsent the Echophon, a DSP based Echo and Delay module for the Eurorack modular system. It is a digital echo with an unique pitch shifting alogorithm, smooth time modulation, tempo synchronisation and feedbacks with saturation. All parameters can be voltage controlled.

4ms Pingable Envelope Generator:
The Pingable Envelope Generator or PEG is a dual digital envelope generator. The duration of one envelope cycle can be forced-to-fit between two "pings". This means that the envelope will perfectly fit into a rhythmical scheme!

In Theory

Published on Aug 6, 2016 davidryle

"It should work...

I took a leap and bought quite a few new modules all at lone to try a rhythm experiment as well as a different direction in tonal work.

Noise Engineering's Numeric Repetitor, Confundo Funkitus, Tonnetz Sequent are in play here along with a Mutable Instruments Grids. Battle plan included trying straight pulse inputs for the clock timing from a 4MS QCD which is picking up a master timing off the Intellijel Metropolis RYK-M185 sequencer. They are playing nice with a suite of STG Soundlabs sequencer modules and Time Divider as well as a Moon Modular 554 Octal Divider to hammer out some pulse timings to the Tonnetz Sequent. A pair of Synthesizers.com Q962 sequential switches are further dividing up the various pulses to the Home and Transform functions on the Tonnetz Sequent.

The tonal chords from the TS is running a trio of Synthesizers.com Q106's sent through a Yusynth mixer to a Behringer CC300 Space Chorus and on to an Oakley Audio Discontinuity Wavefolder and then on through a Jurgen Haible Tau "Pipe" phaser and finally into a Modcan Dual Delay which is cv swept from a Makenoise Pressure Points and Brains. Whew! It was worth the 100 feet of cables though as it sounds similar to an old Leslie driven Hammond organ in places - like!

Mutable Instruments Rings starts the piece with a bit of resonant bleeps dampened to sound like wood blocks a few minutes into the production. A copy of the Metropolis sequence to a Harvestman Piston Honda is split up going to an Echophon, Phonogene, Clouds and Z-DSP for loads of background effects. It is also sent through a Behringer DD400 digital delay paneled into a 5U module before sent to a MOTM 440 discrete OTA low pass filter. This is also part of the opening sounds set. The last thing banging out a nasty bass tone is the Makenoise Mysteron.
Bass drum is a single Q106 vco through a Q109 ADSR. The snare sound is a TipTop SD808 and the clicky hat sound is an pair of Q106's in conjunction with a double resonant Q107 SVF filter in high pass mode and Q109 ADSR. The Q107 is also being modulated by a Sputnik West Coast Random Source FRV probability cv.

It worked for me."

Intellijel Metropolis meets 303

Published on Aug 8, 2015 DJjondent

"I love acid in the morning.

The Metropolis Sequencer is uber cool. Inspired by the Ryk M-185 (a Roland System 100m sequencer)
Each stage has slides and a pulse count in the range 1-8.

The Luna Modular VC 303 bass synth is according to the manufacturer (Somatic Circuits) an exact clone of the TB 303 minus the sequencer.

For more pics & info:

Curious when the Luna 303 came out. There was one posted here back in 2012.

"Stormy Weather in Jupiter. A patch on my Yusynth/MFOS/HexInverter modular. Ryk Miller Custom Hex Jupiter Storm doing the crazy noises while the two yusynth VCOs through the ARP filter clone take care of the low bass. I used the sequencer to program rhythms by connecting it to the FM of the LFO and using the LFO square wave as clock."

¡3 modular flangers 3!

Published on Nov 23, 2012 by Stephen Drake

"I've always loved flangers. When I started playing electric guitar as a kid a flanger was one of the first effects I got, and I've almost always had one since. In my modular synthesizer currently there are 3 modules that can work as flangers, and this is a short demo of them.

1. Blacet Time Machine - shortest delay time, use built in LFO for delay modulation, experiment with feedback knob.
2. Synthesis Technology e580 Resampling Mini-Delay - use the Tap output, set the back jumper to the 1-2 postion (feedback from the tap out - brought out to the front panel on my version)
3. Jurgen Haible Son of Storm Tide Flanger - dedicated flanger device, a super monster killer of the flanger world!

Audio is: bass - Ian Fritz Teezer Through Zero VCO being modulated by a MOTM 300 VCO going through a MOTM 190 VCA (driven by a MOTM 800 EG) being sequenced by a Music From Outer Space 16 step rotary sequencer. Treble: Synthesis Technology e340 Cloud Generator sequenced by a Ryk M-185 Sequencer. Clock confusion is supplied by the 4ms SCM/RCD. Various other modules that I've forgotten about were probably used, and it all ran through the Eventide Space device before being recorded straight to computer.

The Deathlehem Machine portable edition

Published on Oct 30, 2012 by Richarius Molindarius

"This is a very short video to give you a rough idea of what my latest noise machine can do! :D This one's a little different though! Not only is he PORTABLE and will be running on a pair of 9V batteries, but he also has STEREO speakers built into him and will have 2 stereo outputs as well! :D
This is the prototype of my idea that I originally had for my 4th Deathlehem Machine that I built in the mid 90's. This guy though blows that one away, as this one is operating on 4 x Voltage Controlled Low Frequency Oscillators! :D (2 of them USED to be 1V/oct. VCOs in my modular. The other 2 x VCLFOs were taken from the same place.)
The 2 x former VCOs can play then entire audio range as well as drop down to almost pausing speed VCLFOs with the triangle waveform. They can also modulate the other VCLFOs with squarewaves
The 2 x VCLFOs can operate from almost pausing speed up the midrange of audio with either triangle or squarewaves.

Operationally:
Each of the 4 x VCLFOs have the following controls:
- Coarse tuning
- Fine tuning
- Control Voltage #1 amount
- Control Voltage #2 amount
- Triangle or Squarewave
- a speed LED
- a volume control

Each of the 4 x VCLFO's can modulate 2 others. The connections are:

VCLFO #1 is hardwired to modulate VCLFO #2 and VCLFO #3
VCLFO #2 is hardwired to modulate VCLFO #3 and VCLFO #4
VCLFO #3 is hardwired to modulate VCLFO #4 and VCLFO #1
VCLFO #4 is hardwired to modulate VCLFO #1 and VCLFO #2

There be some huge amounts of modulation potential in this guy as well as audio screaming that'll scare not one but BOTH of your grandmas! :D Lol.

I'm seriously debating putting this prototype up for sale on e-Bay once he's completed. I only have a couple of small things to do now to finish it up in a nice carry-around portable package.

Lemme know what you think he would be worth to anyone out there he gets a kick out of making sounds that you wont find everyday in your nearest CD store! :D

Thanks for any input! :)

Bye buy boys and girl! ;)
Unkle Ryk"
