Roland System 500 Eurorack Modular Workshop Coming to Analogue Zone, Budapest

via @analoguezone

Monday, November 23at 4:00pm in UTC+01

Analogue Zone - Analogue Modular Store

Scroll down for the English Description!

A Roland már a 2015-ös Musikmessén elkápráztatott minket a SYSTEM-500 eurorack sorozatával, mely az AIRA modulokkal ellentétben teljesen analóg, a klasszikus Roland SYSTEM-700 és SYSTEM 100M rendszereken alapuló modulokból áll.
A klasszikus Roland-hangzás modern eurorack környezetben született újjá.

A workshopot Vayo, a Roland Europe Csoport termékmenedzsere tartja. Most se feledjétek, hogy a showroom férőhelyeinek száma limitált, érkezzetek korán!

******************************************************************

Roland had already mesmerised us with their SYSTEM-500 eurorack series, which will be a full analog series as opposed to AIRA modules released so far. These modules are based on the classic SYSTEM-700 and SYSTEM-100M modules - the classic Roland sound is finally back in eurorack.

The workshop will be held by Vayo product manager from Roland Europe Group. FYI: space is limited in our showroom, so we recommend you to get there in time.

Florian Schneider's Roland System 700

"The unit up for action was formerly owned by electronic music legend Florian Schneider of Kraftwerk (proof available). It has recently been fully calibrated, restored, and cleaned by analog synthesizer specialist Sebastian Niessen (SND)." Title link takes you to shots pulled from this auction. Via Moogulator.

Details of auction saved for posterity:
They don't come any nicer or more prestigious:
You are bidding for Roland System 700 Main Unit. The System 700 was Roland's flagship synthesizer in the late 70s and early 80s and is probably the most elaborate modular synthesizer ever made.

The unit up for action was formerly owned by electronic music legend Florian Schneider of Kraftwerk (proof available). It has recently been fully calibrated, restored, and cleaned by analog synthesizer specialist Sebastian Niessen (SND).
All modules are in pristine, near perfect condition and fully original (no modifications). The case and its tolex is also in very good condition (no cuts, only a few very minor scratches).
The red and white toggle switch caps have been removed for purely aesthetic reasons, as has the red envelope trigger button, which was replaced by a black one. The original parts are included and can easily be put back into place.
The system's configuration is fully original and contains the following modules (some of which are grouped together):
3 voltage controlled oscillators (full range)
2 voltage controlled oscillators (low frequency)
1 clock oscillator
1 reference oscillator
1 noise generator

1 voltage controlled low-pass filter (24dB/octave, voltage controllable resonance)
1 voltage controlled multimode filter (12dB/octave, low-, band, and high-pass)

2 voltage controlled amplifiers (for insiders: the good ones using the BA662 chip, not the CA3080)
1 ring modulator

1 voltage controlled phaser w. lfo
1 spring reverb

1 3-channel stereo output-mixer
1 3-channel audio/cv-mixer w. bipolar outputs

1 preamplifier
1 envelope follower
1 lag processor
1 sample & hold
2 multiple jacks

The unit's power supply is currently set to 240 volts. It can internally be switched to 100, 115, 220, and 240 volts. Serial number is 090173. For more information check vintagesynth.com/roland/sys700.shtml.

Shipment worldwide, please ask me for shipment fee BEFORE bidding. Shipping and insurance is not included in the price.

This is a private auction. There´s no warranty and I won´t take it back again! Happy bidding!

Roland System 100M

Published on Oct 13, 2013 SyntheticMachines·31 videos

"This is a demo from the Roland System 100M. The entire track was made with this system. As usual a multitrack recording + some FX.
Roland had offered 3 modular systems. The Roland System 700, the half-modular System 100 and this one.
Beside the large expensive System 700, this was more affordable for the customers...

This is the System D with the modules 112,121,130,140 and 150."

Military Chopper | 3D Binaural | Moog Voyager | Synthesizers.com Modular | Roland System 100 & 700

Published on Apr 21, 2018 SynthTweaks.com

"Use good quality headphones for best effect. This is a 3D Binaural recording generated from a third order Ambisonic mix.

Basics of patch....

Chopper engine LF and rotor LF generated from Synthesizers.com Q106 oscillator into two Dotcom Q107 filters in series. 1st Q107 resonant LPF output into 2nd Q107 input. Notch output into Moog Voyager external input via Dotcom Q109 EG & Q108 VCA.

Voyager oscillators generate rotor low mid frequency whine. Osc frequency modulated from Voyager LFO which is sync'd to Roland System 100 sample and hold clock.
System 100 s/h clock into Dotcom Q109 EG gate input. Output driving Dotcom Q108 VCA to amplitude modulate rotor LF and engine LF.

Voyager noise source generates wind noise from rotors.

Roland SH09 LFO output, second Dotcom Q106 oscillator, two LFOs in System 100 and two analog step sequencers (Roland System 100 and System 700) generate more LFO modulating signals for the various oscillators and filters to randomize things for more realism.

Atmospheric noise and rotor HF generated from System 100. That signal is also processed in REAPER via multiple extremely narrow HF resonant peak EQ bands in ReaEQ to generate rotor whistle from System 100 modulated pink noise. Whistle fed into Valhalla UberMod to smear HF for more realism.

UberMod also used for atmospheric phasing. Atmospheric ambience generated via Valhalla Room reverb in Ambisonic configuration.

Chopper panning generated in third order Ambisonics via Blue Ripple Sound hemispheric panner.
Doppler shifting as chopper passes overhead generated via Waves Doppler.

Binaural output for video generated via Blue Ripple Sound Binaural Headphone decoder.

Hopefully I haven't forgotten anything!!"

Demo in the video previously posted here.

Roland SYSTEM-700 in excellent shape. The system comes with 1 Main Cabinet (complete with tolex and front lid) and 2 smaller cabinet frames (without tolex). All modules work as expected and the sound is pure analog heaven. Very nice set of modules including 3 filters (!) and 4 oscillators, Dual ADSR, VCA, S&H, Mixer, GateDelay, Multiple, and stereo Chorus. Se below for full list. All oscillators calibrated and track perfectly over 5 octaves (and more) with 1V/octave. (Octave range switches are not currently calibrated for perfect octave jumps). Pre-wired Internal routings: Key CV to all 4 oscillators Key CV to the 2 filters in the main cabinet ADSR 1 and ADSR 2 to Left filter in main cabinet. You connect your external CV and Gate to the external PSU-unit. The PSU unit use the special original connector for main cabinet and a more modern DIN- connector for the extra cabinets. Additional empty Cabinet frame including power is included. Just add it to the other Cabinet frame with the included cable. Use for additional modules but also great for test and calibrating matters. Note, this is not the simplified Lab-system but the full blown 700 modules with lots of more external inputs on each module.

List of Modules.

Roland SH-1 Vintage Analog Mono Synth

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Up for sale is a vintage and super rare Roland SH 1 analog synth. Forged from the innards of the Roland System 700 this is one amazing bass machine. Absolutely destroys all over the much coveted SH101 any day of the week. It's aided in this by its secondary envelope which the 101 lacks and a completely discrete design. The oscillators, filters (there's a high pass in addition to the low pass), super snappy envelopes, and voltage controlled amp are the same circuits inside a System 700. Everything is in beautiful condition and has only seen studio use. Everything works exactly as it should and sounds absolutely amazing."

Interesting when you think of it as a pre-configured System 700 keyboard synthesizer.

Moroder and a Roland System 700 Modular

Image via this Sound on Sound article on Giorgio Moroder and Donna Summer's ‘I Feel Love’. Note the article is primarily on the Moog modular and the image caption states "Giorgio Moroder with his Moog modular system" but that's actually a Roland System 700. I wonder what the story is behind this shot - is it his system and studio, was it sent in for the article? Regardless, it is a great article and Sound on Sound is a great synth magazine. Note the Roland MC-8 system and ARP 2600 to his right. Minimoog to his left. This one spotted and sent in via Thomas.

Update via 7ate9 in the comments: "this is my fav moroder pic:

Roland GR-500, GS-500 and PC-50

Click here for shots via this auction.

Details:
"Roland GR-500 and GS-500 Guitarset including controllers and cables. very rare because you won't find this combination anywhere! only a few where made in the past. As used by Mike Rutherford of Genesis and Alex Lifeson of Rush.

Here is a description:
''This is THE first guitar synth ever made & it came out in 1977! It came with an Ibanez made Les Paul type guitar with tons of knobs to control various parameters of the 3 separate synth's that were built in to the module. The synthesizer module included Bass, Solo Synth, and String sounds based on previous Orchestral and analog mono-synths from Roland. There are plenty of sliders to adjust the VCO, VCF, VCA, and LFO sections. The guitar utilizes a special pickup system that is connected to the synth module via Roland's own 24-pin interface and controlled it using CV/GATE signals generated by the guitar's pickup system while playing the guitar. In addition to the modified pickup, there were magnets under the face of the guitar that could increase its sustain''

This is the complete set including the guitar, the PC-50 Preset Controller footswitch, 24-way cable and the synthesizer unit (GR500). The guitar has a very nice honeyburst finish.

The playability is very good, with a nice comfortable neck and low string action.

The sound is very very very versatile as you may expect. You can create anything with this one, Because of the Les Paul style body this guitar sustains for days and has a nice warm tone. I'm sure the guitarsynth experts know what i'm talking about.

The condition is good. Just light playwear. Some scratches here and there, but nothing serious. A hardcase is included for the guitar.

Here is another description for the high tech guitarplayers among us:

The GS500 was a heavily modified Ibanez guitar, with a single humbucker plus a hexaphonic pickup for driving the GR500, individual on/off switches for each of the four synthesis sections, switches to select the sound of the guitar itself, the synthesizer, or both simultaneously, plus EQ. All this appeared as a beautifully crafted, but very heavy instrument whose body contained magnets that fed the audio output back to the strings, thus creating an 'infinite sustain' system. The GS500 really was far more than just a guitar plugged into a sound generator!

If the GS500 had a limitation, it was that you could only connect it to the outside world using a heavy, multi-core cable unique to the GS/GR500 combination (shown in the above picture). Without this, you owned nothing more than a large, heavy paperweight. Given that there are now no spares left, you cannot even build a new one, and the similar-looking cable used for future Roland guitar synths was wired differently and does not work correctly. While players were to find this very frustrating, it had a huge benefit for Kakehashi and Roland when the prototype was stolen — and then returned as 'unusable' — just hours before its world launch in Australia.

The synthesizer module (shown below) was amazing, with five sound generation sections — G, P, B, M and S — that you could play individually or in any combination. These were the straight-through Guitar, Poly-ensemble, Bass, Melody, and an 'external synthesizer' section designed to interface with and control an SH5, System 100 or System 700. The Poly-ensemble, which treated the independent outputs from the 'hex' pickup, was interesting, and produced what would later become Roland's signature 'bowed guitar' sound, but it was the Melody section that captured players' imagination because it was here that the real synthesis took place.

Sounds were generated by a conventional VCO/VCF/VCA architecture reminiscent of the earliest SH-series synths, but with a number of very important bonuses. For example, the VCA was 'touch sensitive', and the output from the Poly-ensemble was an input in the solo synth's mixer, so you could inject the polyphonic sound into the VCF/VCA signal path. Another superb innovation was the output buss system that allowed you to direct the sounds generated by each of the sections to any one of three outputs as well as a global 'Mix' output.

In addition, the PC50 Preset Controller was a floor unit that allowed you to set up three mixes for the P, B, M and S sections and select between them using stomp switches. A fourth switch returned control to the guitar. I have never seen mention of the PC50 in any of Roland's documentation"
