BAF 2024: Black Corporation - Jupiter 8 Desktop

video upload by sonicstate

"At Buchla and Friends 2024 we hooked up with Roman Filippov of Black Corporation who has produced a limited edition charity version of his synthesizer, based on the Jupiter-8, with all proceeds going to non-military charities in Ukraine. Filippov also announced his collaboration with Buchla, bringing back vintage modules that were released in the early to mid-70s. These modules have been recreated using modern technology, while still maintaining the core sound of the original Buchla models. They also include new features such as USB and MIDI out, polyphonic aftertouch, and extended tracking capabilities. The Buchla modules are now available for purchase through the Buchla website and the official sourceofuncertainty.com web store.

Jupiter 8 Desktop Price: 4,299 USD

SOURCE OF UNCERTAINTY - New Collaboration Between Buchla & Black Corporation's Roman Filippov

Soviet Space Child wrote in to let us know Buchla has teamed up with Black Corporation's Roman Filippov to release reissues of classic Buchla modules though a new venture called SOURCE OF UNCERTAINTY. From their new website https://sourceofuncertainty.com:

"AUTHENTIC REISSUES OF CLASSIC BUCHLA MODULAR. Source of Uncertainty is the official store for Buchla Classic Reissues, created by Roman Filippov of Black Corporation.

BUCHLA CLASSIC REISSUES SIGNIFY A RETURN TO PRODUCTION OF THE ICONIC COMPOSITIONAL AND PERFORMANCE TOOLS, using original parts wherever possible, plus minor adaptations for greater low-noise performance and reliability and component availability. We ship worldwide, direct from the engineer."

Roman actually got started cloning Buchla modules prior to forming Black Corporation. See the labels below or do a search for him if you want to go down the rabbit hole.

The following are the current modules listed:

Molchat Doma | На дне | Moog Sound Lab

video upload by Moog Music Inc

"In a recent visit to the Moog Sound Lab in Asheville, NC, Belarusian-turned-LA post-punk trio Molchat Doma performed an exclusive version of “На дне (Na Dne, At the Bottom),” the dark, danceable opening track of the band’s second studio album, 'Этажи (Etazhi).'

Formed in 2017 and currently on the coveted Sacred Bones Records roster, Molchat Doma has been a force in defining today’s new-wave renaissance. The band’s synth-pop-meets-industrial style is a seamless and authentic representation of ‘80s synth-driven sound—revived and reimagined.

In this performance of “На дне (Na Dne, At the Bottom),” the band blends warm synth leads, pulsing bass lines, and deep, droning vocals. On top of a simple, resolute drum machine beat, the artists use Moog One, Moog Grandmother, and a Novation 49SL MKIII to build the track’s melodic leads and bass.

Molchat Doma is…
Egor Shkutko: vocals
Roman Komogortsev: guitar, synths, and drum machine
Pavel Kozlov: bass and synths

GRP A8 The GRP A8 is one of the physically largest synthesisers ever made

video upload by JIAWEI

"The GRP A8 is one of the physically largest synthesisers ever made. Only 23 intsruments were produced - 22 for the production line and one designer Roman Groppioni Paolo made for his own personal use. The GRP A8 is completely pre-wired, with a huge number of switches and knobs to change the many parameters available at every stage of the signal flow. It consists of two completely identical (upper and lower)synthesizer systems It can be used as a mono (6 VCOs), duo (2x3 VCOs) or poly (2x3 VCOs) synth. The difference between the two-part DUAL and POLY modes is that in the first case a common MIDI channel controls both sounds at the same time. In POLY, on the other hand, two separate MIDI channels can be selected. Its LFOs have an enormous frequency range from low frequency to 1700 Hertz."

Soundforce µCHORUS 6 + CHORUS 6 / the real juno experience (and a lot more) / extensive playthrough

video upload by BRiES

"This video demonstrates the behaviour of the Soundforce modules µCHORUS 6 and its full sized counterpart CHORUS 6. I also spend some time comparing the sound of the Soundforce modules µDCO, µVCF 6, µCHORUS 6 and CHORUS 6 to my vintage Roland Juno 60 (that I bought about 15 years ago when prices were still a power of ten lower).

When Nicolas of Soundforce asked me if I would be up for making a video about his upcoming Roland Juno inspired chorus modules, I was already excited (it might not be apparent but I'm a huge Juno fanboy) and it's safe to say the µCHORUS 6 delivers when it comes to genuine authenticity. The fact that the big version of his chorus called CHORUS 6 goes far and beyond was something I couldn't really phatom until I tried the unit out. Especially the ability to use audio rate modulation and external CV to modulate just about every parameter turned out to be very interesting indeed.

I use the Soundforce µDCO and µVCF 6 extensively in the video as well. The combo of these modules is very much enjoyable for a fan of 80s era DCO polysynths (even when they're just one mono voice) but they're certainly not limited to sounding like your favourite cheese or Roman goddess."

Buchla Model 292 Quad Lo Pass Gates Eurorack Module by Tiptop Audio - Pics & Details

You've likely seen Todd Barton's recent Tiptop Buchla 292t videos. For those curious, the t denotes Tiptop Audio. Buchla clone modules are often referred to their makers by a letter: v for Mark Verbos, r for Roman Filippov of Black Corporation, j for J3RK, and d for Djangosfire. c denoted the original modules, and e new modules, by Don Buchla.

Details on the 292t via Tiptop Audio:

“It will be very interesting to see what can be done when light controls sound”. That probably was Don’s Buchla first thought when he saw the photo resistor. It seems it didn’t take him long to come up with a great idea using that electronic part and in 1970 he had already finished making his first batch of Model 292 Quad Lo Pass Gates. Why Quad? Because one was so awesome so four of them will mega awesomeness and if they can also be used to create quadrature speaker installations then hell yea!

Don really nailed it with the 292 and the way the lo pass gate provides a natural damping envelope to incoming audio is one of the greatest inventions ever made in analog audio.

Fast-forward to the year is 2023, and we are now very excited to recreate the legendary Model 292 again. In 2023 proper Vactrols are very hard to find, so we end up designing the Vactrols ourselves and the 292t uses 8 hand made Vactrols that are tailored specifically for LPG sound.

The first batch of 292t is now shipping to our dealers and pre-orders should open soon. We are very happy about it and as always are looking forward to see what you will do with them.

The user manual is already on the website so you can check it for more information. Our dear friend Todd Barton, who helped beta test the module, has videos on his You Tube channel worth looking as he explains the 292t in detail.

Vactrols will not stay with us for much longer: they are a very old technology that is getting banned in more and more countries due to the content of cadmium in them. So Don’s invention form 1970 needs to be reinvented for this century, and we are already deep into some serious experiments on alternative circuits that will help keep that wonderful sound of the low pass gate alive in the future. We hope to have this version available later this year.

And one last note, this coming May 11-13 Tiptop Audio will exhibit at Superbooth in Berlin. We have some products many of you are waiting for and some things that you never seen before, so stay tuned."

Träumerei (Dreaming) by Robert Schumann on Prophet Rev2

video upload by Roman Wollenhaupt

"I made a patch specifically for this piece. I always imagined the piece being played by an old music box that ran out of energy towards the end. With the patch I tried to recreate that. Through the control pedal I increasingly add pitch drift and faster decay. The reverb comes from Ableton and was automated there."

Sputnik Variable Waveform Generator

pic via @Noisebug

"The Sputnik Variable Waveform Generator is a Buchla inspired discrete triangle core oscillator. One major change is the inclusion of a hard sync vs. the typical triangle core soft sync. The module features 5 dedicated audio outputs (sub, pulse, sine, saw and triangle) and various animation controls such as built-in waveshaper, saw animator and drive circuits with attenuation amount inputs. It also has a vco/lfo switch, both linear and exponential FM inputs with attenuators and very good tracking."

For those that may not know, Sputnik is Roman Filippov's (of Black Corporation) other brand.

https://www.noisebug.net/
And a video overview by DivKid:

video upload by DivKidVideo

"Here's the new Variable Waveform Generator from Sputnik Modular. It's a discrete Buchla style triangle core oscillator with individual waveshaping animations, sub oscillator, linear and exponential FM, hard sync and LFO mode.

In this video we take a look at 19 patches to break out of the basics with your oscillators, looking at more advanced patches that demonstrate a variety of synthesis/oscillator functions and look at adding dynamic animations to your sounds right at the core of the patch. While this video focuses on the Variable Waveform Generator specifically you can apply these patches to other oscillators and wave shapers, so give them a go and feel free to let us know in the comments what's working for you.

#Jamuary2022 | Day 09 | The Mission

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"Sunday is a day of rest, church, meditation, reflection - or just doing nothing. So I started with an idea of using Gregorian chants, load it into the Morphagene and try something generative. When I added the DPO's sinewave, a beautiful sinewave flute came out and when I programmed Rene to do some notes matching the chant it started to go Far East on me. It's a super exotic combo that doesn't make any sense.
But according to Wikipedia, the first missionaries arrived in China during the Tang Dynasty (7th Century AD) and Gregorian chant also emerged from Roman rites in Latin. So this crazy patch makes sense after all."

Electric Music Store - 292Cr

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via NOISEBUG Reverb

"This units 'ALL' output does not send any audio. Everything else functions as it should. Unit is being SOLD AS IS.

Four independent gates with selectable amplitude-dependents spectral characteristics. Knob settings and applied control voltages determine levels and cutoff frequencies. A summed output facilitates voltage controlled mixing.

The Model 292, with the capability of simulating the spectral and amplitude changes that accompany a receding sound source, is one of several Electric Music Box modules that can deal with spatial localization and movement. [Others are the Model 227 System Interface and the 285 Frequency Shifter/Balanced Modulator (for Doppler shift).]

Frequency domain gating can impart a dynamic tonal variation to sounds that gives the listener a sense of absolute loudness. This quality is characteristic of all acoustic instruments (the harder you strike, pluck, or bow, the richer the overtone structure), but has been lacking in electronic instrumentation."

Note Electric Music Store is Roman Filippov's of Black Corporation. This appears to be the first post to feature the 292Cr.
