Tim Exile's Scapeshift - The Generative Groove Box That DOESN'T Use AI

video uploads by Tim Exile

Tim Exile's New Generative Music "Instrument" is Insane

video upload by mylarmelodies

"This is a first look at Scapeshift, a new Reaktor 6 ensemble from Tim Exile - it produces music & sounds generatively (ie: not AI), which you can control as little or much as you want. I'll introduce it, then I'll just jam it.

BTW - this is running on a Mac Mini M1 Late 2020 (the base power M1). The Reaktor CPU indicator is declaring 37% on this, it's quite intensive! I've only tried to run this standalone. Tim gave me a copy of Scapeshift to see what I thought, I decided to make this video to show you it. Tim's had a hell of a year with cancer, bereavement and bankruptcy following the end of the brilliant Endlesss.

20:20 Oh!

Scapeshift is a generative groovebox and sequencer. I started building it in a hospital bed as a tool to soundtrack videos. I was documenting my recovery from major cancer surgery and I wanted a tool that would be fast and flexible and output ready-mixed music.

But I’ve ended up using it for way more than that. It’s become an inspiration machine that can take me all the way to a finished track. I’ve already written and released a full EP with it. Right now I’m listening to it in Wander mode, getting my mind melted as it weaves through continuous variations.

At its heart, it’s a machine designed for evolving, morphing and cross-pollinating rhythms, melodies and textures. The results can stand alone as finished tracks or be used to complement a production in your DAW or DAWless setup. Unlike your DAW, which reads out static sequence data, everything Scapeshift generates is controlled by continuously adjustable parameters. It can do some cool things your DAW can’t. You can morph continually between two completely different patterns, cross-breed multiple patterns or create themes to generate infinite variations on a style. It comes with 12 themes which get you started with one click. It can feel a bit like using AI, but unlike AI you can then precisely tweak the parameters of what it generates and make it your own. And it does all of this without using gigawatts of power and stolen data.

It’s got a full suite of sound engines: 5 drum synths, two monosynths, a polysynth, a resonator, a noise generator and FX. It’s also got a multiband mixing and mastering section so it outputs audio that’s ready to go wherever you want your music to go.

Scapeshift is available from my Patreon store for $59 + tax.
You get a 50% discount if you support my “Adventurer” tier. Scapeshift is my first step on an exploration into building and interacting with a new type of musical system. It's an ongoing adventure which I would love you to join me on.

I’m also rebuilding after a rough year. What I yearn for more than anything is some stability. Your ongoing support will be a huge help towards a sustainable recovery for me and my family. I want to build a village of curious players, makers and tinkerers and I would love for you to come with me on this adventure.

You’ll need a license for Native Instruments Reaktor to run Scapeshift without limitations. If you have Native Instruments’ Komplete bundle you will have this already. You can run Scapeshift in the free Reaktor Player but it will time out after 30 minutes and you won’t be able to save your work.

In terms of system requirements, the more recent your system the better. Scapeshift takes ~35% of a single core of my M2 Max Macbook Pro and ~70% of one core of my 2016 Intel Macbook Pro. A buffer size of at least 512 samples is recommended as Scapeshift does a lot of realtime event processing. This can cause clicks at lower buffer sizes. It’s recommended to run Scapeshift in Reaktor standalone. Most people have had success running it as a VST or AU plugin inside a DAW but some people have reported difficulties on older machines."

And the press release:

Connected music-making platform Endlesss is launching Endlesss Studio, a MacOS app and VST / AU plugin which expands their award-winning lockdown-busting iOS app into the world of desktop digital audio workstations (DAWs) and hardware. The new MacOS app adds deep integration with all major DAWs such as Logic Pro, Ableton Live, FL Studio and more. VST and AU plugin versions, MIDI controller support and instant audio drag & drop to connect the rapid Endlesss workflow to the heart of the professional music creation environment.

Endlesss is a powerful cloud-connected multi-track looper with a large collection of performance instruments and FX. It keeps music makers in fast-moving idea development to provide a lightning-fast creative flow. Since its launch in spring 2020, the Endlesss iOS app has been used by a long list of notable creators including Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Imogen Heap, electronica giants Underworld, Kevin Drew from indie-rockers Broken Social Scene and US comedian Hannibal Buress.

Endlesss Studio comes with a broad collection of performance-optimised instruments designed to inspire creativity straight out of the box. It also includes 23 creative performance FX with instant recursive re-sampling capability. Sculpting complex and dynamic sounds in Endlesss Studio takes seconds, a process which otherwise involves hours of detailed automation and expensive plugins.

Endlesss Studio integrates seamlessly with the iOS app to enable instant handoff of the track-building flow between mobile and desktop, allowing multiple collaborators to contribute live from anywhere in the world with an instrument or their voice, hardware or software, on smart-phone or in a high-end studio.

“Studio is Endlesss’s next step in building a home for creative musical culture where creators of every skill level can connect, learn and build communities around creativity,” explains Tim Exile, musician and Endlesss CEO and founder. “As the lines between artist and fan erode, Endlesss is building an ecosystem where anyone can forge their own creative path. Whether that path leads to a tight-knit community of like-minded friends or rising to the top of the Billboard charts, Endlesss aims to put purpose and culture at the heart of music-making.”

Development of Endlesss Studio was funded by backers of their Kickstarter campaign which ran during the month of June this year. Endlesss raised £141k, becoming the 7th most-funded software campaign in the history of Kickstarter. The launch of Endlesss Studio comes months ahead of the timeline promised to their backer community, marking it as one of the few Kickstarter projects to be delivered ahead of schedule.

Endless Studio is available from today until 31st March 2021 at $99 / €99 / £79, a 50% introductory discount of the usual price of $199 / €199 / £159. A Windows version is under development and will be available in summer 2021."

Next-level creative FX plugin
Mutate your sound like never before with Shed Loads Of Resonators

The Butterfly Effect

Transform the simplest sonic event into the huge, the complex, the seismic. SLOR’s brand new audio-reactive processing algorithms mutate and augment your sound like never before. Build out an entire track from a single beat by transforming it into bass, chords and percussive FX, turn background noise into a cinematic soundscape or live-process an acoustic instrument for a mind-bending performance.

Infinite resonators, infinite possibilities

SLOR’s swarm of ground-breaking infinite resonators take sonic manipulation into new territory, blurring the lines between FX processing and synthesis.

Infinite resonators use a special algorithm to control the feedback path to allow transformations which are both extreme and tightly controlled. This is what gives SLOR the power to add subtle atmospheres, bend beats into chords and melodies or set up autonomous compositions and morph continuously between all of these.

Deep sound design in no time

SLOR’s interface is incredibly straight-forward and tweakable for an effect with so much power. Explore ideas and make radical transformations quickly without menu-diving - and if you want to explore further there’s plenty of depth hidden in the ‘+’ pages just one click away from the front panel. Make big waves in your production using features such as live transient detection, envelope following, morphing, parametric polyphonic LFOs, polyphonic scale mapping, swarm pattern switching and much more.

System requirements

MacOS 10.10 onwards, Intel Core 2 Duo or higher
Windows 7, 8, 9 and 10, Intel Core 2 Duo/AMD Athlon 64 X2 or higher
Installation of Native Instruments Reaktor Player 6.2

"The depths of the engine - how voice swarming works

Voice swarming works by generating a swarm of variations for each parameter. This swarm is controlled by the centre, pattern and amount controls. Close swarms behave more like a monosynth, distant swarms more like a polysynth. Individual parameters can swarm in different densities. For example the pitches could be very close while the filter cutoffs are far apart.

The relative positions of each voice to each other is called a swarm pattern. Swarm patterns can be randomised individually or all at once using the Randomise buttons. The last 16 randomisations are automatically stored and recalled using the History Wheel

If you'd like to dig deeper into SLOO you can read the manual here

"FLOWs is an algorithmic loop sequencer packed with 1GB+ of royalty-free loops meticulously curated from improvised jams on my Flow Machine from the last 5 years. Explore, mutate and create sonic structures with audio-reactive sculpting and stochastic modulation. Or let it play and zone out to the visualiser: it's for makers and listeners alike.

- Layer and cross-modulate up to 4 loops at once with filters and envelopes that follow the sonic imprint of each loop.

- Switch between loops mid-way without losing sync. Modulate loop switching with random and cyclical LFOs.

- Layer multiple loops without phase distortion and clashing bass using Clearsum.

You'll need to grab a copy of Native Instruments' Reaktor Player to run it. There are instructions for how to do this in the included manual. If you want to save your changes or use it for more than 30 minutes at a time you will need to buy a full Reaktor licence."

Native Instruments introduces FLESH

Published on Nov 17, 2015 Native Instruments

And two demo tracks from Richard Devine. Press release and images follow below.

"Extended demo of the new "Flesh" Reaktor 6 instrument. "Changing Colors" :-) Very cool innovative performance synth that turns anything you feed it into a electronic symphony

Notes - Only two instances of the Flesh ensemble used. For this demo I used a few kicks, snares, high hats, cymbal crashes, ethnic percussion, and white noise samples at some of the loop parts and at the transitions segments. These where all single shot sounds not loops, that I programmed in time with Flesh. This only accounts for a small amount compared to what Flesh was actually doing, which was about 85% of the demo. I took one snare crash from one of the kits in Flesh and reverse it for one transition. The rest of the sounds are 100% Flesh. There was only one touch of reverb on a Aux send and return with 2CAudio 2C-B2 plug-in."

"November 17, 2015, Berlin – Native Instruments today released FLESH – a new REAKTOR Instrument developed by electronic musician, producer, and inventor Tim Exile. FLESH uses a set of advanced algorithms to turn rhythmic source material into all the elements of a complete production, including basslines, melodies, chords, harmonies, and more. The instrument is aimed at creative producers looking to enhance their live sets or find fresh inspiration for their original productions through a fun, improvisational approach. FLESH is available now at the NI Online Shop for $99 / 99 € / ¥ 11,800 / £89 / $AU149 and runs in REAKTOR 6 or the free REAKTOR 6 PLAYER.

"The concept for FLESH came to me when touring with my custom looping, beatmaking, and improvising instrument that I built in REAKTOR," says Tim Exile. "I was missing a way to make harmonic and melodic material in a live, improvised scenario. I wanted something that would empower me to create expressive and dynamic sounds which fit in perfectly with whatever was going on at the time."

FLESH was designed to be a fun and easy-to-use performance instrument. Its advanced algorithms analyze the transients and spectral profile of sampled source material in the background. This information is then sent to four audio engines as curves and triggers for re-synthesizing the source material. The result is dynamic riffs, grooves, and chords that retain the feel of the original sample. This advanced processing is made possible by the REAKTOR 6 engine.

FLESH comprises four audio engines, plus effects and modulation sections. Each engine has a specific function, from changing the sonic character of the sample itself to transforming it into a monophonic sequence or lead, chords, or sub-bass frequencies. Additionally, the sound generated can be further modified by the effects section and modulation page. The effects section re-creates a highly-modified dub delay while the modulation page allows producers to add subtle to radical motion to their sound.

FLESH features a streamlined control set allowing for radical changes to the rhythmic and tonal output of the instrument. Producers can play rich harmonic progressions, trigger and switch source samples and sound snapshots, then tweak parameters across all engines at once in real time. A clever system of global macro controls allows for consistent and tactile live tweaking on just four main controls – Spectrum, Character, Length, Mod.

FLESH is the first REAKTOR Instrument designed from the ground up to get the most out of the KOMPLETE KONTROL S-Series keyboards. FLESH uses the Light Guide to provide tight visual feedback, highlighting sounds and samples, and sequenced harmonies. Native Map® automaps parameters to the eight control knobs on the KOMPLETE KONTROL keyboards. Users can also save presets – including samples – and recall them in real time.

Tim Exile has seen his career move from performing in small clubs, to big stages around the world and releasing albums on the Planet Mu and Warp imprints. For the last years, Tim has worked closely with Native Instruments to design his own set of 'audio instruments' including THE MOUTH and THE FINGER.

FLESH is available now at the NI Online Shop for $99 / 99 € / ¥ 11,800 / £89 / $AU149

Imogen Heaps Musical Gloves on Dara O Briain's Science Club

Published on Dec 30, 2012

"Imogen Heap demos her (x-IMU-based) musical gloves to Dara on his show, Dara O Briain's Science Club broadcasted on BBC2, Dec 31, 2012. Imogen also did a short performance of her track 'Me The Machine' but time limitations meant this performance was heavily edited. A longer (but still edited) performance is on BBC i-player:

"In 2009, when Kelly Snook invited Imogen to visit to MIT's Media Lab, she realised the tech had now made this possible when she tried on Elly Jessop's musical glove. "Elly's glove could record and loop the voice with a few intuitive hand gestures. A million possibilities flooded my imagination! I was quite emotional and as soon as possible I changed my touring and recording life cycle to get to work on creating my dream setup that felt ever closer than before."

She called up Tom Mitchell, who'd worked with her before in coding her Monome for a Letterman performance and told him the idea. He loved it and got funding from the University of Western England (UWE ) to do a research paper on the work. She asked 5DT for a set of gloves to get going and began experimenting."
