"The Evolution Systems EVS-1 is one of those machines slightly too far ahead of it’s time. Requiring a computer for convenient editing might be pretty common now, but back in 1990 it was a pretty new concept. So I guess many original users of the EVS-1 never actually used the editors and when the computer formats these editors relied on became obsolete, the EVS-1 was doomed to become an obscurity.

But today, through the wonders of emulation (and the surprisingly vast capacity of windows backwards compatibility) it’s quite easy to expirience and explore the EVS-1 the way it was meant to be used.

In this tutorial I will show you how to set up the editors for Atari (via emulation on Linux) and Windows 95 (inside Windows 10 through some fiddling), all you need is explained in the video, links to all files can be found below, as well as all the commands mentioned in the video (for convenient copy+paste).

First the links:

The editors, as well as some outstanding patches can be downloaded as zip files from deepsonic.ch (scroll all the way down):

https://www.deepsonic.ch/deep/htm/evo...

The patch banks linked on the ancient Evolution site can be found here:

https://www.file-upload.net/download-...

An Atari ST disk image containing the editor can be downloaded here:

https://www.file-upload.net/download-...

Now about the commands you have to enter to install hatari on linux, to install snap support (if needed) enter these commands into a terminal:

sudo apt update

followed by

sudo apt install snapd

to install hatari enter

sudo snap install hatari-emulator

Now for the Windows 10 part, Installation.txt tells you to copy the file MSSTDFMT.DLL to the root directory c:\, you can find MSSTDFMT.DLL inside the Install folder.

Next you’ll have to bring up the command line prompt, this can easily be done by typing cmd into the windows search bar. Instead of just running the command line prompt, right click the symbol and select run as administrator. If you’ve done so, you can follow the next step from installation.txt and type

regsvr32 C:\MSSTDFMT.DLL

and press enter. This will register the dll file and make it executable

And now for the tricky part: the other file mentioned in installation.txt is called comdlg32.ocx an trying to register the file in the same way as MSSTDFMT.DLL will result in an error message because it’s a 32 bit ocx file and therefore needs to be registered in a special way. So unlike mentioned in installation.txt, copy the file into the c:\winodws\sysWOW64\ directory and type

%SystemRoot%\SysWOW64\regsvr32 comdlg32.ocx

I hope this works for you the way it has form me. If you run into communication errors, restart both the editors AND the EVS-1, sometimes it took me some tries with both editors but in the end it ususally ended up working just fine."

Modor DR2 OS007 Firmware Upgrade - Parameter Locks!

"There is only one single new feature, but it's not an unimportant one: parameter locks! What's that?

A parameter lock sets a value for a certain parameter on a certain drum hit in the sequencer. They are used to program variations of synthesis parameters inside a drum pattern. Programming (or recording) a parameter lock is very simple: keep a step button pressed in the sequencer (1...16) and turn a knob. Now the drum hit on this sequencer step has that altered parameter, while the next drum hit returns to normal.

Note that a parameter lock doesn't necessarily have to be at the beginning of a drum hit. You can also put one on a grid step somewhere halfway a drum hit to alter the sound at that moment.

Also note that you aren't limited to one parameter. You can program parameter locks for different parameters, even on a single sequencer step.

Want to remove a parameter lock? Keep the step button down while pressing NO(/EXIT)."

Futuresonus Parva 2010 Black

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

It's hard to believe it's already been 12 years. You can find some demos in previous posts here.

"Parva by Futuresonus is an 8-voice digitally-controlled analog multi-timbral MPE-compatible polyphonic synthesizer. combining the warmth and fullness of true analog synthesis with the power, convenience and connectivity provided by a digital brain, Parva represents a huge step forward for desktop synthesizers. inside Parva are eight voice cards, each its own complete analog synthesizer, loaded with a plethora of incredible features:

3 digitally-controlled analog oscillators with a +/-5 octave range, hard sync and choice of triangle, variable-width sawtooth, and PWM waveforms
4 ADSR envelopes with choice of exponential and linear modes and looping option
4 LFOs with key-synced and free-running options and a wide variety of waveshapes including sine, saw, triangle, square, random and even stepped shapes
dual VCFs with 12 and 24dB LPF and HPF modes, a 12 dB BPF mode, self-oscillation and filter FM
to be clear - each voice has all the features listed above, and because Parva is multitimbral it's possible to distribute its 8 voices as desired across multiple patches simultaneously. on top of that, Parva is one of the very few hardware synthesizers to offer full MPE support. hook up a Linnstrument, Continuum, Sensel Morph or Roli Seaboard to unlock the incredible potential of per-voice velocity, pitch bend, pressure and modulation - and put it all to work just as you'd like with the Parva's 40-point internal modulation routing matrix!

in addition to its robust analog synthesis engine, Parva's hardware is geared towards maximum power and flexibility with minimum effort. Parva's main outputs and headphone output make simple L/R stereo synthesis a breeze, but each voice also has its own stereo 1/4" TRS line level output, enabling independent recording and effects processing of any or all of Parva's eight voices! the USB type B port makes connection to a computer host easy while standard 5-pin DIN MIDI I/O ports enable connection with controllers old and new. Parva's USB type A host port - a first among analog synthesizers! - enables direct support for USB MIDI controller connection. no more running power this way and signals that way. just plug and play!"

And the full performances:

Farewell Phoenix September Pop-Up Performance

"Lynn Fister is a Vietnamese-American experimental musician, writer and visual artist residing in Asheville, NC. She has been making drone-pop and ambient music for over a decade. After taking a long hiatus from their own music, Lynn has recently returned to creating solo music once again as Farewell Phoenix. These new explorations concentrate on choral soundscapes manipulated by and integrated with modular synthesizers. She is now particularly interested in how installations, space and environment inform music-making. Although there are no releases to date under this name, Farewell Phoenix recordings should be available in the near future.
https://linktr.ee/farewell.phoenix"

Sleep Number September Pop-Up Performance

"Sleep Number, a solo project by Asheville based musician Sophie Froehlich Hull, was born out of brief moments of exploration between band practices. Sleep Number blends drone and noise, all while a structural undercurrent keeps it grounded. The recent addition of Make Noise’s Strega into her gear has allowed her to lean into the grit and noise side of Sleep Number, further fueling her desire to experiment and push the bounds of cultivating her own atmosphere of sound.
Sophie is the operations manager inside Static Age Records. She also organizes a quarterly live drone session, named 'Drones in the Garden,' with co-founder Lynn Fister. She has two short releases on Bandcamp and is set to record her full album this winter.
https://sleepnumber.bandcamp.com/

Thom Nguyen September Pop-Up Performance

"Thom Nguyen is an Asheville-based improvisor and drummer of MANAS, Nest Egg, We Bow To No Masters, etc. Producing energetic bursts and invoking a sensitivity to space that one often associates with Free-Jazz and New Music percussion, Nguyen’s approach elegantly bridges works of sonic sculpture with a punk aesthetic of immediacy, of aggression and playfulness. He also runs a drum rental business, Batteria Backline.
https://thomnguyen.bandcamp.com/"

Sarah Louise September Pop Up Performance

"Sarah Louise is interested in how music can help us remember what kind of animal we are. Likewise, she is interested in what synthesis can reveal about the natural world. On her two most recent albums, she uses electronics to create organic sound environments for inner journeys. Her newest as-of-yet unreleased music is joyful and danceable, revealing the importance of embodiment and collective energy to her ever-evolving sounds. Believing that everyone’s expression is as important as anyone else’s, she is also branching into facilitation, helping to create nonhierarchical safer spaces for group singing, celebration and whatever else may arise. Having started as a solo 12-string guitarist and singer of traditional songs, she brings a unique sense of rhythm, harmony and emotionality to her electronic music. You can find her music and keep in touch with her musings and group experiences by following her Bandcamp.

Osi-Op : Stereo Patches : Vaemi (Eurorack)

video upload by Vaemi

"Hello everyone Today we will be making stereo patches with Osi-Op. There are actually many ways to do this. We will now look at ways we can do it with just oscillators.
First of all, the 1st oscillator will be staying in the middle and playing the lowest frequency sound. The 2nd oscillator is panned to the left channel and the 3rd oscillator to the right channel. If we specify the amount of pan, we can say that 75% left and right panned. Apart from the random differences of the oscillators, we can say that changing the Waveshape Output with PWM settings and sometimes giving the opposite movement as a mirror of a movement to two opposite channels creates a very nice stereo image. While doing all these with basic waveforms, I also tried to create small differences between the right and left channels from time to time with Thru Zero FM. Now let's hear the results together.

Vaemi : Osi-Op Through Zero (TZ) FM Sounds by Tunç Çakır

video upload by Vaemi

Osi-Op : Using Through Zero FM Synthesis and VCA : Vaemi (Eurorack)

"Osi-OP, which we regard as an analog reflection of the new era of digital electronic music, is an analog and voltage-controlled oscillator module. It was designed in Eurorack format and it has a width of 14hp. The fact that it has Thru Zero FM Input and a Waveshape Output, which can be used for morphing, are two of the most important features of this product. From a first impression, it may look like an oscillator that is appropriate for subtractive synthesis; however, we actually designed it to be used for additive synthesis. Thanks to Thru Zero FM, this oscillator can regard oscillators with Sine Wave as analog operators. You can even prepare your synthesizer patch without using the classic subtractive resonant filter. The most important aspect of Thru Zero FM is that there is no tune drift when you increase the modulation rate. For this reason, Thru Zero attenuator (TZ FM potentiometer) can almost be used like a filter itself. the frequency of the second oscillator acting as FM (operator) according to the frequency of the 1st oscillator giving the fundamental frequency; must be set in harmonic degrees of the fundamental frequency. But at these settings the tonality can remain in and be musical. In addition to Square, Saw, Triangle, and Square Sub oscillator outputs, it has a Sine Wave Output, which was designed with JFET transistors and has a very low distortion rate, and a Waveshape Output, which was designed with Sine-Triangle and can be used for morphing. It also has a Wave Shape Input. It is connected to this input via the Triangle Wave circuit board inside. Sine Wave is fixed on Wave Shape but you can forward it to the other WS Input by patching other waveforms, and you can morph between two waveforms. The pulse width of the Square Wave can be adjusted. The same knob is the morphing knob of the Waveshape Output. Since the oscillator has tempco, there is a 1V/OCT calibrated CV Input that is sensitive to heat. It can perfectly stay in tune up to 3.5 octaves. In addition, for FM, there are two separate CV Inputs, Exponential and Thru Zero. While Exponential FM CV Input can take all types of DC and AC voltages, Thru Zero FM CV Input can only be used for AC audio rate signals. Also, when you enter a waveform on Thru Zero FM CV Input, oscillators are soft-synced automatically. With 1V/OCT CV Input, you can adjust the frequency of the oscillator; and with Exponential FM CV Input, you can easily add an LFO or Envelope Generator. Square Wave Sub OSC Output, which is completely synced with fundamental frequency and can give an octave lower than the fundamental, will help you a lot to create strong modern synth-bass sounds. It is made with NOS IC. When the oscillator is FM modulated, the Sub OSC never gets negatively affected by this modulation; and it can maintain giving the frequency clearly. You can also switch the oscillator to the LFO mode. You can create subtractive syntheses by using two or more of these oscillators or by mixing these waveforms. The main reason for us to design this oscillator is, as its name shows, to enable the creation of complex FM patches and sounds by using 2-3 or more of these oscillators, just like Operator FM. While Thru Zero FM increases the modulation, it can maintain giving the same frequency without losing the adjusted frequency; and you can add harmonics to the sound musically. The module has 5 knob controls, 4 CV Inputs, an input for Waveshaper, and 6 ±5V waveform outputs. Osi-OP, which is handmade and produced with the help of Through Hole technology, is a product consisting of electronic components that is carefully tested."

Dave Smith Was an Ironman Triathlete

In case you missed it in this post, Roger Linn noted Dave Smith was "an avid athelete, cyclist and triathlete. He actually participated in the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon in his younger years..."

@birdkids reminded me of an article on the development of the Prophet VS archived on the WaybackMachine. In it, Chris Meyer mentions Dave was in Hawaii prepping for the tournament during that time. I thought it was interesting and worth sharing. I captured it below.

"Date: Wed, 15 Jan 1997 07:55:41 -0800

Subject: Birth of the Prophet VS

I thought the following might be of interest to you. Xrystal

The Birth of the Prophet VS

By Chris Meyer, ex-employee of Sequential Circuits

reprinted from the VS WaveWrangler User Guide by permission of Interval Music Systems,
©1991 Interval Music Systems.

It all started somewhere in 1985. We were still working on the Prophet 2000 sampler,
and as resident historian (in other words, I had the most magazines and manuals) another
engineer was asking me to explain how various instruments performed crossfades. I had
finished discussing the Fairlight, and had moved on the PPG - explaining its wavetables,
and the ability for it to scan a group of waves first in one direction and then back again,
While I was scrawling this back and forth motion in my notebook, suddenly a little twinge
went off in the back of my head, and myhand drew the next line arcing down the page.. and the
concept of crossfading beween waves in two dimension, not just one, was born.

Bastl Instruments Introduces Pizza and Softpop SP2

video upload by Bastl Instruments

"In the beginning, there was... Pizza. Listen."

Pizza FM & Wave-shaping Oscillator

We are very excited to finally introduce our first dedicated eurorack oscillator module called Pizza!

Pizza is a compact 8HP digital oscillator with powerful wave shaping applied to FM synthesis. Pizza offers a ton of flavor in a compact form, and it grants superb access with the assignable CTRL knob and CV, while its 3 different outputs allow for high patch flexibility. The unique take on FM synthesis combined with waveshaping offers a vast sonic palette while staying intuitive. Pizza is perfect for hybrid synthesis! Waveshaping on MAIN output gives you the world of additive techniques, while the PULSE and OSC OUT speak the subtractive language where mixing the outputs into a filter will sound massive!

Because of its digital nature, Pizza does not have to be tuned, and its approach to tuning is different. You only go to the Tune mode when you actually need to. Otherwise, the PITCH knob serves as either octave transpose or detune. Bastl's own VCO was brainstormed ever since we started producing modules, but Pizza has been in active development for the past 3 and a half years. It was developed by a team centered around our junior developer Martin Klecl, coded by Florian Helling, and supervised by Václav Peloušek, with contributions from Lennart Schierling and the whole Bastl team.

The first batch of Pizza preorders (300 units) starts: Wednesday 11th May 2022 at 20:00 CET Shipping in early June 2022. Price is 297 EUR including tax and 245 EUR excluding tax.

Softpop SP2

At the beginning of 2022, we introduced the desktop modular synthesizer Softpop SP2 – a collaboration between Casper Electronics a.k.a. Peter Edwards and Václav Peloušek of Bastl Instruments. Softpop SP2 is a radical subtractive synth under the influence of unconventional digital control. It’s a rare beast that excels at both melody and noise in equal measure.

There is a free major update coming to all Softpop SP2 users! There is a digital VCO hiding inside the SP2: users can switch a jumper inside the unit and update firmware via an audio file to access it! The digital oscillator has several new waveforms (generated on the original analog Triangle output) and gains the tuning precision and stability of a digital VCO! The firmware update will be available as a free download when the second batch, which is currently produced, will be available in the summer of 2022.

New SOMA TERRA Synth

TERRA announcement (SOMA labs) video upload by Vlad Kreimer

"All sound in this video is TERRA without additional FX.
Just a slight master limiter was added."

via SOMA LABORATORY

TERRA is a new SOMA Labs synth that is currently in development.
TERRA is a highly conceptual device. The core idea is unity of nature and technology, and a perfect balance between simplicity and versatility. Behind the extremely simple interface hides a complex polyphonic, microtonal synthesizer with a broad and flexible sound palette that ranges from classical beautiful tones to complex atonal noise, and offers smooth and fast transitions between these extremes.

The innovative keyboard design invites new playing techniques and covers the full range of a grand piano with the possibility to tune each note with an accuracy of 125 steps per semitone. To achieve this range with such a simple keyboard we designed a unique system of pitch shifting using four additional sensors. Pressing different combinations of them will result in 16 variations of keyboard transposing, including up to 3 octaves up and down, fifth, fourth, third, tone etc.
Not only do you get the full range of a grand piano in a very compact design, TERRA also offers an entirely new and different approach to playing melodies and chords.

New Roland JUNO-X: First Impressions, Patch Building, Features & Review

video upload by MR TUNA Music

"My friends--- I can finally say it: The Juno-X is HERE.
What an honour to be a part of the launch campaign with my friends at Roland. I am a huge advocate for the original Jupiter-X and all of its amazing capabilities, and the new Juno-X does EVERYTHING the Jupiter does in a more accessible and more inexpensive package--- it even has stereo speakers under the hood!

Here is my day 1 review of this awesome synthesizer.

Roland JUNO-X - DEMO by gattobus: "Distant Memories"

video upload by gattobus

"Here is the new Roland JUNO-X!!!
Every sound you hear in this video comes from this instrument, no overdubs, everything's been played in real time using the 5 internal parts, iArpeggio and the step sequencer.
Inside of each unit that you will find in the stores, there's also a piece of me as I had the privilege to create a lot of factory tones, scenes and the new iArpeggio 2.0 patterns!
I put a lot of love into it and I'm so happy with the final result. I have never felt so good with a synth since System-8, my first real job for Roland. It's a great honour for me to collaborate with them.
This simple song that I played, is not just a demo, it's a declaration of love towards life, for the fact that it led me to do (at least for me) the most beautiful job in the world.
I would like to thank president Jun-Ichi Miki, Hisakazu Yamasato, Akihiro Nagata, Yoshinori Iwamoto, Gota Miyabashira and all the amazing people in Roland I've been in contact with during the last 5 years. You are like superheroes to me, you're really making my dreams come true.
I hope this is only the beginning.
Happy 50th Anniversary Roland!!! 🧡"

The Legendary JUNO Experience Reimagined with the Power of Roland’s ZEN-Core Synthesis System

Los Angeles, CA, April 26, 2022 — Roland announces JUNO-X, a new polyphonic synthesizer driven by the next-generation ZEN-Core Synthesis System. JUNO-X brings the best of the past together with Roland’s latest technologies, reimagining the vintage JUNO experience with vastly expanded sound possibilities and free-flowing tools tuned for today’s music. It delivers the full capabilities of the native ZEN-Core engine, along with genuine recreations of the JUNO-60 and JUNO-106 synths plus other legacy Roland instruments.

Standing among the greatest analog synthesizers ever created, Roland’s iconic JUNO lineup has had a massive impact on music for over four decades. The warm, organic sounds of the JUNO-60 and JUNO-106 defined countless ’80s pop hits and played a huge role in the emergence of techno, house, synthwave, and other electronic styles. JUNO-X delivers the vintage JUNO spirit that continues to inspire leading music makers, coupled with the power and versatility needed for modern workflows.

JUNO-X includes JUNO-60 and JUNO-106 Models, plus an all-new JUNO-X engine with a Super Saw waveform, velocity sensitivity, pitch envelope control, and other evolved features. The two beloved chorus modes from the originals are also available, plus a third mode with even more fatness and swirl. Users can combine them to create seven different chorus effects for use with any JUNO-X tone.

JUNO-X features additional Models from the historic Roland canon, including the PCM-based XV-5080, acoustic pianos from the RD series, and an expressive Vocoder. Model Expansions from Roland Cloud are supported as well, giving players the ability to load optional titles such as the JUPITER-8, JD-800, SH-101, Vocal Designer, and others.

Roland Cloud is also home to a growing range of Wave Expansions, Sound Packs, Sample Packs, and other creative tools, and ten free Sound Packs are available with a JUNO-X purchase. Additionally, JUNO-X provides integrated support for Roland Cloud Connect, a powerful option that includes the WC-1 wireless adapter and one year of Roland Cloud Pro membership. This allows users to browse, audition, and load Model Expansion titles and other Pro membership content directly to the keyboard via Wi-Fi.

A key element of the JUNO’s appeal was a straightforward interface that made it easy to craft inspiring sounds and evolving textures in the heat of the moment. With a familiar hands-on panel inspired by the original 1980s synths, JUNO-X invites players to fully immerse in the music and create without limits. Up to four tones can be layered together, and a wide selection of modern effects are available for enhancing sounds. First introduced with JUPITER-X, the powerful I-Arpeggio function offers both traditional arpeggio sounds and organic, inspiring movement driven by intelligent algorithms.

JUNO-X comes equipped with an expressive 61-note keyboard with aftertouch and loads of connectivity for every musical workflow, including balanced and unbalanced audio outputs, a stereo audio input, and MIDI I/O. There’s also a mic input for vocal performing or feeding the onboard Vocoder. USB is available for data backup, audio/MIDI communication with DAWS, and remote editing with the free JUNO-X Editor for macOS and Windows. A high-quality stereo speaker system provides built-in sound monitoring, and Bluetooth® is available for streaming music from a mobile device.

Availability & Pricing

The Roland JUNO-X Programmable Polyphonic Synthesizer will be available in the U.S. in May for $1999.99."

--- Original post prior to the above follows (pics replaced with hi res versions - click them for the full size shots) ---

This is just breaking - no press release or info on Roland's site yet. Until then, some pics and features. As you can see this one is based on the Juno-106 design. The UI is as important as the engine and it looks like Roland may have nailed this one. The one problem with the original Juno-106 are those BA662A voice chips that fail over time. I've had a couple go and they are not simple to replace. You have to unsolder multiple pins on them to remove them.

What's interesting is it appears Roland is releasing classic physical designs with overlapping synth engines. The JUPITER-X has the JUPITER-8, JX-8P, JUNO-106, SH-101, XV-5080, RD, Vocoder, and ZEN-Core engines. The Juno-X has JUNO-106, Juno-60, XV-5080, RD, Vocoder, and ZEN-Core. So the X adds the Juno-60 but is missing the Jupiter-8, JX-8P, and SH-101? The Juno-X adds built-in speakers like the Jupiter-Xm. Interesting they note the speakers were inspired by the Juno-60 below. The Juno-60 did not have built-in speakers. The Juno-106S and SynthPlus 60 did.

Features:

Over 4,000 presets from historic Roland products including the JUNO-106, Juno-60, XV-5080, RD series of pianos, and classic vocoder model

Model Expansions incorporate even more Roland history and sound-design technology to offer nearly endless options for sonic exploration

Newly engineered Super Saw oscillator, Chorus III effect, and more use ZEN-core Synthesis to deliver a worthy holder of the Juno gauntlet

Layer up to 4 different sounds for unparalleled tone design opportunities

Intuitive interface enables straightforward sound design and modification

Ergonomic arrangements encourage breezy workflow, setup recall, and preset management with Scenes (up to 256 global setup presets)

Free Juno-X Editor software is included to give you even deeper access to making your sounds your own

Classic design and robust hardware seamlessly blend satisfying tactility with precision control

Aftertouch and assignable sliders and switches provide great range of expressivity

Retro arpeggiator and I-Arpeggiator can be freely toggled to allow for greater rhythmic flourish
USB audio/MIDI interface and USB memory port for data backup, computer connection, and more

Onboard stereo speakers (inspired by the Juno-60) and Bluetooth compatibility make it easy to jam along to any accompanying track

Dedicated microphone input includes its own effects to model inputs and vocoded sounds

Multi-effects suite includes multiple forms of reverb, delay, chorus, EQ, compression, and overdrive

Output jacks for hold and control pedals allow for expansion of expressive control

3.5mm and 1/4-inch headphone outputs, L/Mono and R 1/4-inch main outs, and L/R XLR outs

Custom White Roland SH-101 w/ Blue LEDs

" Modded by Funkagenda, paint job by Customsynth.co.uk, here we have a Pearl WHITE Roland SH-101. Visually stunning, no mistake? Cool blue LEDs make a statement, for sure. There are VERY few in this colour, with these extra specifications......

There are extra features now on board eg audio input, LFO clock in....dial in the FM synthesis, and the most weird/bonkers sounds are generated...something totally unexpected!

Condition is "mint". This synth is 40 years old. It has NOT been played very much at all. Normally, the faders/knobs are 'getting on a bit, like...'....not THIS one. The power switch is the usual suspect re failing; it is absolutely faultless. Synth really feels like brand spanking new! Package is complete with 220V PSu, although the synth will beaver away with only x 6 "C" type batteries inside....so personal synthesis audio/sequencing easily accomplished via headphones......"
