Electronic Sound Issue 56 Magazine & CD Bundle Featuring EMS

via Electronic Sound

"We have a superb issue for you this month. And that’s not only because we have an exclusive interview with Kraftwerk main man Ralf Hütter, although since Hütter rarely talks to the press that is clearly something a bit special.

Our cover feature details the history of EMS, the legendary UK synthesiser company founded by Peter Zinovieff, Tristram Cary and David Cockerell in 1969. What started out as a vehicle to fund Zinovieff’s studio became a decade-long adventure in synthesis with a very British sense of innovation about it. EMS machines like the VCS 3 and the Synthi AKS were responsible for some of the best known electronic music of the 1970s – from the Radiophonic Workshop to Brian Eno to Pink Floyd.

We also have a weighty report on the recent Bluedot Festival, featuring Kraftwerk, New Order, Jon Hopkins, John Grant and more. Our interview with Ralf Hütter took place backstage after the Kraftwerk set, with Hütter radiating urbane charm and wry humour as he chatted about music and science and sampling and cycling. “We are not a museum, so let’s play what we do,” he declares. “My art is music.”

Other interviews this issue include Haiku Salut, Eric Random, Jah Wobble & Bill Laswell, Paranoid London, Rolo McGinty from The Woodentops. Plus, of course, we have our packed front section, our ace regular columnists, and our usual exotic feast of new album reviews. Hit the link to order your copy straight away!

Limited Edition CD Album: ‘The Sounds of EMS’

This month’s audio accompaniment is ‘The Sounds Of EMS’, a fascinating 45-minute CD of music made either by the people responsible for EMS, or by the machines they built. You can almost smell the dust burning as the old circuits start warming up! The CD has two pieces by Peter Zinovieff and another from Tristram Cary, the latter with a spoken explanation of what he wanted to achieve with the piece. There are also tracks by David Vorhaus (who founded the cult electronic group White Noise with Delia Derbyshire), Mike Hankinson (another early adopter of the VCS 3), Benge from Wrangler and Jack Dangers from Meat Beat Manifesto.

01. PETER ZINOVIEFF – ‘A LOLLIPOP FOR PAPA’
02. TRISTRAM CARY – ‘ 3, 4, 5 – A STUDY IN LIMITED RESOURCES’
03. BENGE – ‘1969 EMS VCS3’
04. DAVID VORHAUS – ‘THING FOR TWO VCS3S’
05. JACK DANGERS @ TAPE LAB – ‘SYNTHI 100-PIECE 1’
06. MIKE HANKINSON – ‘JS BACH’S FUGUE AND TOCCATA IN D MINOR’
07. PETER ZINOVIEFF – ‘JANUARY TENSIONS’ (EXCERPT)
08. TRISTRAM CARY – ‘3, 4 , 5 – A STUDY IN LIMITED RESOURCES’ (TALK)"

J.S.Bach - Little Fugue in G minor - Played on a Realistic MG-1 by Moog Music

Published on Mar 24, 2019 MrCaliforniaD

"The MG-1 was built by Moog for Realistic (Radio Shack), and was designed specifically for the home market. Very basic and easy to use, this is a nice cheap way to get your hands on Moog sounds!

The MG-1 is a 2-VCO monophonic/polyphonic analog synth with a genuine 24dB/oct Moog filter, however the overall sound is thin. On the MG-1, the VCOs are referred to as 'Tone Generators'. It can produce sawtooth, square and pulse waveforms, and the oscillators are detunable and syncable. A simple ASR (attack, sustain, release) envelope called 'Contour' can be applied to both the amp and the filter. The LFO section provides triangle or square wave patterns as well as Sample-and-Hold. Additionally there is a simple Ring-Mod effect called 'Bell'.

Feel free to ask any questions."

Started streaming 11 minutes ago Perfect Circuit

"Our modular setup is comprised of a Make Noise 0-Coast and Strymon Magneto with a couple of additional utilities. We're using node.js to send YouTube chat messages to a patch in Max 8, which uses the Expert Sleepers ES-8, ES-6, and ES-3 as a randomizable patch matrix. Juzisound Total SOLO Sampler for East European Balkan Regions

Another interesting item spotted by swissdoc.

via Juzisound:

"Small and powerful sampler device specialized for playing ethno solo sounds. This device is specially created to use in East European Balkan regions. Also is very useful for musicians from Turkey, Greece, Arab or Middle East regions. If you play that kind of music, this device is best for you!"

Unlimited Sample Memory

Yes - Really unlimited sample memory! This device is created with new technology and new conception! Juzisound Total SOLO Sampler don`t use RAM memory for loading samples. All samples are played in True Real Time DIRECTLY from an SD Card! This new technology allows using extremely massive sample libraries. The size of the sample is limited only by the size of the SD Card in use. For the time being, the sampler accept SD cards with capacity up to 64GB, but there will be no problem in future to add support for newest and biggest SD cards.

Portamento / Oscillator Modes

In this device Juzisound implements many types of specialized Oscillator Modes, specially created for use in Ethno solo music. Many types of Portamento with full set of parameters are supported, including very popular Yamaha DX, Casio CZ, KORG and original and very useful JS and JS2 portamento. This JS and JS2 portamento have special technology for smooth sample to sample transition, and this kind of portamento is not available in any other hardware keyboards. Additionally to portamento modes, the sampler has many special oscillator engines (combination between specially prepared samples and additional software processing), specialized for playing Saxophones, Clarinets, Solo String instruments, Bouzoukis and many more.

Moognificat

Published on Mar 24, 2018 Moognificat

Playlist:

1. Bach WTC Book 1, Fugue 2 on Moog Synthesizer
A performance of Fugue No. 2 from The Well-Tempered Clavier, book 1 by J. S. Bach. All sounds are created with a Moog Sub 37 analog synthesizer and Reaper.
2. Bach, "Mein Jesu" on Moog Synthesizer
This performance of J. S. Bach's Aria, "Mein Jesu," was created with only a Moog Sub 37 analog synthesizer and the Reaper DAW. The arrangement is based on the string orchestra setting by Leopold Stowkowski.

Commonly performed during Lent, the lyrics describe the anguish of Jesus Christ in the garden of Gethsemane on the night before his crucifixion. Bach masterfully captures the scene with rich harmonies and a mournful melodic line.

Mein Jesu! Was für Seelenweh befällt dich in Gethsemane
3. Bach WTC Book 1, Prelude 6 - featuring Moog synth EDM
Bach meets EDM. This performance of the Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1, Prelude 6 features a Moog Sub 37 analog synthesizer accompanied by Kontakt 5. Everything was recorded and mixed in Reaper.
4. Purcell, Rondeau from Abdelazer, 8-bit version on Moog Synthesizer
The famous Rondo from Henry Purcell's incidental music to Abdelazer, realized in the style of 8-bit computer game music. Square waves and white noise provided entirely by a Moog Sub 37 analog synthesizer. This is the same rondo that Benjamin Britten used as the source material for his Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra.

The sound of this almost makes you wish that Abdelazer was a real RPG...
5. A Musical Guide to the Synthesizer (Moog Sub 37)
A short demonstration of common synthesizer waveforms and basic filter/LFO effects. Tutti passages bookend short examples of square waves, sawtooth waves, and triangle waves. 100% of the sounds you hear were produced on a single Moog Sub 37 analog synthesizer and mixed in the Reaper DAW.

This video features an arrangement of Purcell's famous Rondeau from the incidental music to Abdelazer. This was also the source material for Benjamin Britten's "Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra. Britten's work is copyright protected, so the form of this arrangement is based on Purcell's original design. I'm sure knowledgeable listeners will still appreciate the homage.

SYNTHI-JS - Free Online EMS SYNTHI

This is pretty cool.

You can play with it here. Try loading some of the different patches. I noticed I had to turn up the volume a bit to hear the first two patches. Be careful of course. I'm not sure if any of the patches get considerably louder.

You can find the source code on github here.

Details captured for the archives:

"SYNTHI-JS is an emulator of the legendary EMS Synthi A modular synthesizer, built in JavaScript on top of the Flocking library.

Features

Devices
3 oscillators
noise generator
low-pass filter
ring modulator
analog-style reverberator
self-triggering envelope generator
16x16 control patchboard
Bidirectional joystick controller
Scope module displaying "voltage" over time
100 patch memory banks with import/export functionality and (new in v1.1!) 5 built-in presets
(new in v1.2!) File upload functionality for input sources via S3
(new in v1.2!) Customizable knob behavior
(new in v1.3!) Emulation of the EMS DK2 keyboard
Getting Started

First, open up SYNTHI-JS and take a look around.

SYNTHI-JS can look daunting at first, but creating patches with it is actually quite straightforward. The patchboard functions as a routing mechanism: device outputs on the left side of the patchboard get routed to device inputs on the top side of the patchboard.

Let's make our first patch! Click on the button at B1 at the patchboard to connect the sine-wave output of Oscillator 1 to Output Channel 1. You should hear a 440 Hz sine wave coming out of your left speaker – congratulations!

Chopin: Préludes Op. 28, № 4 on DSI Prophet '08

Published on Oct 6, 2015 StrangeQuarkStar

"Chopin's Préludes Op. 28, № 4 played on the DSI Prophet '08 analog polyphonic synthesizer. Sound design inspired by 'Continuum' from the FEZ soundtrack by Disasterpeace (Rich Vreeland).

No effects aside from Lexicon MX300 reverberation; straight recording from mixer into Logic with no further editing."

Sarabande on Prophet '08 and MS-20 mini Synthesizers (Bach French Suite BWV 813, № 2)

Published on Sep 25, 2014

"The Sarabande from J. S. Bach's second French Suite (BWV 813, № 2) played on the DSI Prophet '08 and Korg MS-20 mini analog synthesizers.

To play comfortably I connected the Prophet via MIDI to the MS-20 and turned local control off, using another keyboard (my DX-7 II's) to play the Prophet. So the top keyboard plays the MS-20 and the bottom one the Prophet '08.

Usual effects provided by the Maxon AD-900 analog delay (only on MS-20) and the Lexicon MX-300 (reverberation for both instruments).

Everything played live as you see it here; plain recording straight from my mixer/interface into Logic as 96kHz / 24 bit audio.

Full audio quality available on my SoundCloud page, as always."

Solfelectro [Solfeggietto by C.P.E. Bach]

Published on Aug 7, 2015 Piano in a Living Room

Thought this was an interesting one. Note the "laser harp" sound comes from the Analog Rytm.

"Solfeggietto in C minor (H 220, Wq. 117: 2) (yeah they used to name music like we name software) composed in 1770 by C.P.E. Bach, son of J.S.

Skinny Pete plays it in the music store scene in Breaking Bad season 5 episode 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQlAmt...). [below]

The instrument is a Kawai VPC1 controlling a Clavia Nord Stage 2 using a sampled Clavinet D6, a simulated Farfisa organ, and a few touches of dark virtual analog synth. The beat and "laser" sounds are from an Elektron Rytm controlled via a Yamaha MFC-10 pedal board.

Demo of Prepared Electric Piano soundset (mobile version) on iPad

Published on Mar 5, 2013 productionszvon·15 videos

"The sampled instrument is a real electric piano that was prepared as John Cage and others prepared an acoustic piano. That means inserting springs, plastic tubes, pins, all kinds of objects inside the piano. These objects when touching the strings or the tines change the sound of each key played. The result is an instrument that is much more percussive in nature.

Even if there are some clean sounds, these are "dirty" samples. When you put things inside an electric piano, a lot of things happen sonically, like strange vibrations and resonance between the objects and the tines.

The soundset includes a soundfont with 67 instruments and 79 samples in wav format. The free demo set has a 16 instruments soundfont and 16 samples.

Please visit this page for more info:
http://lesproductionszvon.com/for_iOS...

The apps used in the video are in order: Bismark bs-16i, Samplelab, Funkbox and Nanostudio.

The MIDI track used in the first example is the Invention No 13 from J.S. Bach."
