Korg Minilogue Delay Feedback & Ambient Explorations

Published on Jul 23, 2016 Nick Jackson

"This is a quick demonstration of the 'noisy' delay people are talking about on the Minilogue. I happen to love it and think it can have some pretty cool applications, especially in an ambient context. I really opened up the feedback here, just to show how it can run away and self-oscillate, which to me is pretty cool. I'm also running it through a Strymon Blue Sky for some pretty pronounced reverb. I do apologize for the terrible video quality, I had to upload this as an AVI because youtube was giving me the grey screen when I tried uploading as MOV (suggestions for fixing this?)

Alsoo, at parts of this video, mostly when the filter is more closed, you can hear the notorious 'clicky' envelope that everyone is talking about. It happens when the envelope's attack is set fast and is especially noticeable on the lower notes who's harmonics stay out of the 'click' range. Not gonna lie, it's kind of shitty. Sure, you can dial it out by adjusting the attack back a bit....buttt what if I don't want to adjust your attack? What if I want a fast attack? Some people (who are probably just defending their $500 purchase) say it's no biggie and kind of adds character to the synth. I do think it is a flaw. With an instrument designed to create custom sounds, nobody should have to 'deal with' a click if they don't want one. I can see Korg coming out with a V2 of this synth sometime in the future that amends this issue..

But overall, I'm having alot of fun with the Minilogue and think it has some great capabilities, especially for people into ambient stuff like myself. Plus, oscilloscope bro!"

Reawakening -- Minilogue Ambient

Published on Jul 31, 2016

"Here's some more ambient ramblings with the Korg Minilogue. I've got some pulse-width modulation going on here. About halfway through the performance I start playing with the delay's feedback, something I've found I am quite wont to do. There is also some reverb dialed up in my DAW for some added ambience. Once again, the quality is shit, because I'm having trouble uploading .mov's lately. I had to upload this as an .avi, so the video quality is terrible (makes me look black) and the audio is only 16-bit (just think of it as a sweet digital bitcrush plug-in! lol) Anyway, i hope you enjoy or somehow find this helpful, thanks for listening."

Minilogue Ambient Rambling #3

Published on Aug 20, 2016

"In this one I am running the Mini through my guitar pedalboard with a few units engaged, such as a compressor, a couple distortion boxes, and of course that sweet sweet Strymon reverb. The only post-processing is a high rolloff around 17khz in order to tame the more piercing frequencies, because as you may have gathered, I like a bit of noise. As always, hope you enjoy and thanks for checking it out!"

Overcast Minilogue Ambience (with Clouds)

Published on Dec 30, 2016 Nick Jackson

"Today I figured it was time for my Minilogue and Mutable modules to mingle once again.

The Minilogue is being sequenced by it's own internal sequencer - just a simple repeating chord pattern. I've found that the Mini's sequencer is very flawed and quirky, but sometimes that can lead to some very nice results. It seems to mess up the chords that I program into it, sometimes removing notes or even adding extra notes an octave up. It's almost like it gets confused as to what octave to play when it has to think fast. So that's what happened here, and I really liked to way it ended up sounding.

Mini then goes out to Mutable Instruments Ripples and then into Clouds, which is having its' Freeze, Density, Size, and Texture modulated by a Uoki Toki 4LFO. The slow modulations add subtle changing characteristics to the sound and keeps things interesting. I think I need some more LFO's..

The mix comes out of Clouds and into a Strymon BlueSky for some shimmer reverb. I like to use the BlueSky with the reverb time almost all the way up, which really adds this lush ambient wash underneath everything, almost like a droning pad.

It sounded so nice I decided to just leave it alone for a bit, but around the 4-minute mark I begin to tweak the patch a bit. I started playing with the Mini's built in delay feedback, and tweaking the Density of Clouds a bit. I quickly realized that this could get out of hand fast so instead I moved over to the BlueSky and began very slowly cranking up the reverb mix. I really like doing this, as it almost 'disintegrates' the piece into this big washy reverby mess. I like big washy reverby messes.

Around the 12 minute mark my camera stopped recording like it pretty much always does, but I decided to keep the audio rolling like I pretty much always do. One day I'll upload a real nice professional quality video with no technical difficulties, but today is just simply not that day.

As always, I hope you can sit and enjoy these sounds for a little bit. Thank you very much for taking the time to listen."

Overcast Minilogue Ambience #2

Published on Dec 30, 2016

"Another riff I stumbled upon while playing with the Minilogue today.

This is the same exact setup as my video from earlier today..Minilogue, sequenced by it's own sequencer, into Ripples, into Clouds, with a Uoki Toki 4LFO modulating the Freeze, Density, Texture, and Size of Clouds, then into a Strymon BlueSky for some shimmer reverb.

As always, thanks for watching, hope you enjoy!"

Volca FM Day 1 - With Korg Minilogue, Roland TR8 and RE-301

Published on Apr 2, 2016 Earmonkey Music

"Got the Korg Volca FM yesterday. It is extremely musical and easy to approach, even if you don't completely understand what's happening under the hood. I can't say I can make it do what I want, but I can make it do all kinds of things and that may be even better. Sometimes inspiration and order comes from chaos. In this video here's what's going on:

I'm controlling the Volca from the Mopho SE keyboard. The Volca is clock-synced from the Minilogue via the Minilogue's Volca sync output. The TR8 is synced also from the Minilogue via MIDI. Those Korg blokes are so damn smart.... The Volca and Minilogue are both running into the Roland RE-301, and get some chorus from Valhalla Ubermod.

I am only manipulating four different parameter settings on the Volca to get this huge variety is sound. There are two sliders, one for Transpose, which (surprise) transposes the notes up or down octaves, and one for Velocity control. The Velocity gives velocity info to your incoming notes played and can significantly vary the sound. I have not found a way to get the FM to respond to velocity in from the keyboard so if anyone out there knows how to do that please make a comment and let me know.

The other two parameters I'm messing with in the video are the Modulator Attack and Release. As I understand FM, you have a sine wave (operator) that acts as a Carrier, then additional waves (Modulators) that act as, well, modulators. By manipulating the modulator waves, you get a huge variation in the timbre.

Honestly, I'm not really sure what's happening on the technical level, but I do know it sounds totally bitchin.

Finally, the FM has an arpeggiator which I engage at about 3:50. Add some Minilogue lead, and later a beat from the TR8, and this little box is one of the most musical, most inspiring pieces of kit I have bought in a long time. It's just fun. Hope you enjoy."

Jam with Korg Minilogue, Roland JU-06, MicroBrute, Korg Volca, Ableton Live, Push 2 - Detour #7

Published on Sep 15, 2016 Sonic Detours

"I got lucky the other day and bypassed the waiting list for a Korg Minilogue at my local music shop. I have been wanting one of these since they came out and I was not disappointed... this is a fantastic synth!

Here's my first performance with my new silver beast. Be sure to listen with head phones or external speakers... the bass is pretty deep and I can't hear it on my MacBook internal speakers at all.

As usual, everything was sequenced and mixed in Ableton Live, using plenty of compressors, reverbs and delays. Apart from the drums, all parts were made with the hardware synths you see in the video and the stereo master was recorded in real time on my iPhone 6, along with the video. No multi tracking of post processing - everything was played "live".

Gear used:

- Korg Minilogue
- Roland Boutique JU-06
- Korg Volca Bass
- Art Tube Preamp
- Korg Volca Keys
- Arturia MicroBrute
- Ableton Live
- Push 2
- Novation LaunchControl

The main chord progression in this performance is the first 4 bars of the "Liquid Pad" preset on the Minilogue. I came across this pattern while flicking through the presents and I just had to do something with it.

The bass is delivered by the MicroBrute... just a simple square/sine wave patch with pulse width modulation and the filter cutoff way down.

I'm playing the JU-06 live on the Minilogue keyboard (local MIDI control is off). I really enjoy playing a real keyboard after being stuck with the Push 2 pads for a while... man I hate being locked into a key and scale when I play! I've been a bit worried about the size of the keys on the Minilogue, but they worked out great - no problem at all.

The Volca Keys plays the high pitched lead that is introduced in the first breakdown, and the Volca Bass is responsible for the 303 style pattern in the last part of the performance. I use a small Art Tube Preamp on the Volca Bass to create some warm, fuzzy distortion (not in the shot).

I use two drum racks in Ableton Live for the drums - one with TR 808 samples and one based on the lesser known but super cool Boss D55 drum machine (I just love that rim shot). I'm not using the Volca Beats for this performance at all.

The hardware synths were sequenced in Ableton Live and the patterns arranged in scenes, allowing me to "perform" the arrangement in real time. I mapped the buttons on the LaunchControl to mutes on individual drum voices, so they could easily be switched in and out during the performance."

All parts here.

New KORG Minilogue Four Voice Analog Synth Coming to NAMM?

Instagram video above minus audio from what I can tell. Some unnofficial details and a pic below. Thoughts?

"KORG Minilogue - is a fully programmable, 4-voice polyphonic synthesizer, is also equipped with built-in reverb and delay effects. KORG company offers the best way to get acquainted with a unique, stunning features of the analog synthesizer. Synthesizer has a unique analog engine, quick access to the 100 factory 100 user presets, 8 voice mode to create its configuration of 4 votes - unison, polyphony, and so on. The front panel 41 of the controller to configure and quick change function, the oscilloscope in real time gives a visual check of sound, 16-step sequencer with automation polyphonic up to 4 parameters synthesizer and more.

For switching visible plugs Sync In and Sync Out to work with synthesizers lines and Electribe Volca.

It should be noted that the presented model has a better price, and opportunities compared to competing models. Synthesizer fully programmable, has a high sound quality, control over harmonics waveform changes, the use of cross modulation, and more. The possibility of using a 16-step sequencer with recording automation options. Polyphonic Synthesizer KORG Minilogue will be an excellent acquisition and profitable investment for keyboard players, professional and amateur musicians."

Update: new image in via Soviet Space Child.

Update2: a new flyer in via Soviet Space Child below. $499.99 price tag.

Update3: image of the back added below.

I have to say, personally I find the Minilogue to be a pretty sharp looking little synth. A bit retro and a bit modern. Not a fan of mini keys, but three octaves in a compact size is a fair trade off. Hoping it will feature velocity and aftertouch for use as a mini iPad controller. I'm guessing that would likely be a stretch as this is meant to be a stand-alone analogue synth. I do wish manufacturers would make 5 voices the default though.

Update4: and the official announcement from KORG is live.

Korg Minilogue analog synth Korg Volca Beats drum machine dead battery total boner killer PROTIPS

video upload by Jay Wires

"I’ve got access to every great synth ever made, but these little korgs are some of my favorites because they’re so much fun to play.

PROTIPS:

1. don’t forget to charge those batteries. As you can see, when your volca drum batteries die midway through your jam, it’s a TBK (total boner killer). Game over.

2. the minilogue takes a shockingly long time to tune up on its own, so hold down shift and press record to manually tune it.

3. It just blew my mind to find out (like 3 years later) that there’s an official Minilogue firmware update that lets you transpose your sequences via the keyboard. Not sure why this wasn’t part of the first version, but I’m looking forward to backing up my patches and updating this OG minilogue and my minilogue xd real soon. Now if only I had more time to play them.

4. Be a pal and stream, like, follow, share and all that other BS. http://www.jaywires.com/"
