Driving at night in the Pacific Northwest | Synth Wave & Psychogeography

video upload by Mamotreco

"Music for driving around late at night in the Pacific Northwest. Merging lanes through saturated tail light reds as the bright headlight halos pass you by. This is what this synth music and accompanying video is all about. This track 'Cybersyn - Centre Autoroutier' is part of an album called Intrigues Telematiques which is all about the melancholy feelings of forgotten technologies. Centre Autoroutier is French for a fancy rest stop. Rest stops in France were generally well maintained into the 90s and early 00s and featured functional but stylish architecture, well-appointed amenities, and even in modern sculpture works ... a sort of Eurotruck geographical vaporwave of late 20th Century nonplaces. This video however was shot in the Pacific Northwest which gives this track a different hauntological connotation due to the psycho-geography of that region of the United States.

Steve Fisk's 1976 ARP 2600 with 3620 Keyboard SN 0732 ?

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

You can find a demo by Steve Fisk at the 2011 PNW SynthFest demoing his ARP 2600 posted here (see this post for additional videos of the event). P.S. If you aren't familiar with Steve Fisk, see this Wikipedia article. His Yamaha CS60 went up for sale back in 2013. According to this auction by Salamander Labs, his 2600 is up for sale. I have no way of verifying, so do your due diligence if you are interested. Note in the video linked above there is a green monkey sticker on the front panel. It's missing from this ARP 2600 but you can see a slight discoloration where it would have been. As always, who knows...

Details via the listing:

"Ok, this is it. An Arp 2600 with keyboard used extensively as a live and studio instrument by Steve Fisk, whose comments and the unit’s pedigree are below. This instrument has been used on the road internationally, in studio, and live performance settings, and as a result has some cosmetic scratches. The power supply caps, speaker amp driver transistors, key bushings, and a few key springs have been replaced…and the shittyist plug ever used for a keyboard has been replaced as noted below….otherwise it is original. It is fully discrete, and the circuit boards are NOT epoxied so it can be serviced. A full factory calibration was completed by Gemma at Sound Audio Repair in Olympia, Wa…"

"From Steve Fisk;

My 2600 is the first synth you see on the Arp 2600 Wikipedia page. I am the original owner. I bought the synthesizer in 1976. It was my primary instrument for years. I wrote and performed several noisy live pieces with the ARP. It was also my “jam” instrument for many improvs in Olympia and Seattle in the late 70’s. It was a key part of my live setup for Pell Mell, Pigeonhed, Customer Service, and Tiny Holes. It is also featured in much of my studio work with Pell Mell, Soundgarden, Pigeonhed, Reggie Watts, Unwound, Some Velvet Sidewalk and Seacats. The beast was my goto box for 808 kick drums(see Soundgarden’s “Spoonman” remix). It also did duty on several film soundtracks and corporate work. In 1995 the Jones plug that connected the keyboard to the main frame was replaced with a robust milspec connector by Omega Intl, a vintage synth service run by an ex roadie from the Moody Blues. It is in excellent working order despite some well earned cosmetic blemishes. I’m going to miss the spring reverb, a great resource for sound effects."

Roland Paraphonic 505 Synthesizer

via this auction

"This is a ONE OWNER instrument. I bought this new in 1979, and it has never been taken out of the home (non smoking home) except when I moved from So Cal to the PNW. Other than being dusty when I brought it out of the closet, I did give it a good wipe down, and it is in fantastic condition. In picture #4, the "release" slider is slightly bent, not broken, and it, as with all sliders and knobs, work great. I DID spray contact cleaner in all sliders, plugged it in, and all works just fine. I will say that when testing all the keys, SOMETIMES I would hear a "scratchy" sound, then when key was depressed again, no scratchiness, so I would think that after 40 years, this was a contact point getting the "cobwebs" out. :)"

Morgasmarings!

Published on Jul 9, 2018 Comparative Irrelevance

"Lately I've been spending some time with my new Morgasmatron! I've been a big fan of the MS-20 filter for a long time, and the Morgasmatron builds on that heritage but takes it to a different level in terms of flexibility and modularity. Still, that wonderful grit and scream is there once you start to push its limits. I think it makes a great pair with Rings' natural, clean timbres. It's almost like plugging a guitar into a crunchy tube amp or analog distortion pedal: all sorts of little gritty artifacts start popping up in the cracks of the sound.

I used this combo in the "Foehn Wind" video I published the other day [below] with just some sparse patch notes, so I figured I'd make another video to take a closer look at Rings+Morgasmatron. Now, this isn't patched up exactly like in Foehn Wind. In that video I used Pam's New Workout and µScale for sequencing Rings' pitch and Structure in the same way that I show in 3 Modules #64 [below]. And I used a sine wave LFO in addition to Sheep to modulate the cutoff, and modulated Sheep's wavetable selection with Mod Tools. I also used Clouds for reverb and additional "lofi-ness".

Here I've simplified a little, and I'm sequencing Rings with my SQ-1 (off screen), which is being clocked by Sheep's 1-bit output. Sheep is also modulating Rings' Position and the filter cutoff for both filters in opposite directions, which can make for a neat stereo effect at more extreme settings.

Rings is in sympathetic strings mode (yellow) and I have Damping set to fully open for most of this recording, which produces almost indefinite sustain. Morgasmatron takes care of the dynamics.

Most of the magic just comes from pushing Morgasmatron's input levels, Q-drive and resonance. Here I'm taking it into pretty overdriven settings.

✌︎

See you around! :)"

Synthrotek Ambient Music - Vol. 1 - MST System 104, VERB Quadrangle

And some PNW sacrilege on the other end of the spectrum:

Synthrotek:s ROBOTOize Pop Music! - Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit

Published on May 16, 2018 synthrotek

"Do you desire to have a vocoder, pitch shifter, speak-n-spell effect, vibrato, 8-bit modulator and a bit crusher sounding module all in a lo-fi heavily CV controllable package? Well surprise! we read your mind! The Roboto module is all these and more (and it has a neat Cylon looking graphic that lights up). Check it out!

Features:
Can be in either Robot mode or Pitch mode, but not both. Handy LEDs tell you which mode you're in. The ROBOT button toggles between the two.
Vibrato toggles on and off. Works in either Robot mode or Pitch mode.
Robot and Vibrato CV inputs activate those modes (and deactivates in the case of vibrato) upon receiving a gate pulse. Gate pulses in these inputs are just like pushing their corresponding buttons. Expected transition is from 0V to +5V (and back to 0V), but it will handle any voltage within the power supply range without damaging the module. Transition between what is considered "off" and "on" is at approximately 2.3V.
Rate pot/input control the clock speed in the chip. A CV input of 0-5V will mimic the range of the pot, but voltages outside of this range will push the rate setting further.
The CV input is mixed with the voltage coming from the pot.
The pitch pot is used to pitch the audio up or down when in pitch mode. It has 7 zones/pitches; 12:00 is normal pitch, and there are 3 steps up and 3 steps down from there.
0-5V fed into the Pitch jack mimic the full travel of the pot (0V is lowest, 5V is highest, normal is ~2.5V). Voltages outside this range are tolerated but won't provide any added functionality.
The pitch pot is disabled when a plug is inserted into the CV jack.
Roboto is fun at parties.
IN LVL adjusts the level of the incoming signal.
MIX:
CCW=input signal only
CW=processed signal only."

PATTERN.4 ⧉ Tides, Rings, Clouds

Published on Dec 16, 2017 Comparative Irrelevance

"Please find enclosed Pattern 4.

Patch notes:

Tides and Rings make up the two voices. The pad sound is Rings, in the secret "Disastrous peace" mode (Google it), filtered by Ripples with some self-modulation for that grungy distortion sound. The arpeggio is Tides, in "Two bumps" mode (Parasite firmware addition).

The arpeggio notes are produced by a sine wave from PNW going through µScale. The output from µScale is also sampled by Kinks' S&H section at slower intervals, and that is what determines Rings' notes.

I'm mixing together the voices: I have both LP2 and BP2 outputs from Ripples available in the mixer, as well as the arp from Tides. And then it all goes through Clouds in the end.

Thanks for watching!"

Lavender (Hugo Paris) is an electronic musician and sound artist based in Portland, United States. His forward-thinking and ethereal pieces echo the work of artists like Four Tet, Tim Hecker and Alessandro Cortini while his dance tracks have the dancefloor-driving energy known to disco legend Patrick Cowley and early Depeche Mode’s new wave.

Lavender’s first album Mystique Youth came out August 2015 on Jacktone Records and made it into SF Weekly ’s top 15 Bay Area albums of the year. Lavender's follow up album Horizons Beneath the Surface, abbreviated HBTS, came out May 9th 2016 on Jacktone Records. HBTS was supported by multiple tours along the US west Coast and Europe throughout 2016/17. The album received stellar reviews from XLR8R, That’s Deck, aQuarius recOrds and SF Weekly. HBTS made it into KALX Radio's Best Albums of 2016 list.

While Lavender’s studio work embodies the aesthetics of minimalism and the cinematic landscapes of post rock, his intricate audio-visual performances can range from voluptuous soundscapes to dance-floor bangers with Italo Disco overtones. Lavender’s latest scoring work can be heard on full-length movie The Modern Jungle (La Selva Negra), which received multiple nominations including the honorable mention from Slamdance Film Festival.

Roland CMU-800R MIDI Interface Test

via this auction

See this post for a fun overview and demo of the CMU-800R, including the software, at the 2006 PNW Synth Meet. You can find additional info on the CMU-800R here and here, and of course in the archives. Note you do not get full access to the internal synth parameters, so think of this as a severely limited preset synth with TR-606 drum sounds, and CV & gate outs. Still a fascinating bit of synth history and this one has MIDI so you do not need the software to make use of it. According to this Sound on Sound article it was "the first sound module to provide multitimbral voicing, independent outputs for each section, control over other synthesizers, and sequencing."

Description from the listing:

"The CMU-800 is one of unique and rare module that was produced by Amdek and then by Roland in the past. It's a medium-sized, off-cream metallic wedge, with a barrage of jacks on the back and a bare minimum of knobs on the front. It also sported this ruddy great ribbon cable hanging out the back!

Scarlet Architect Mini Euro Tour Indiegogo Campaign

Published on Jul 13, 2015 refuge6

You can find their Indiegogo campaign here. Synth spotting, and some specific gear talk from member Ron Ruthersford further below.

Video description: "2015 has been a year of miracles for Scarlet Architect. The long awaited release of their LP, Eternal Return, the bands first release in over 33 years, has been announced by Genetic Music: September 25th, 2015 is the big day!

Now the band has been invited by Zurich's BalconyTV to appear on the program as well as perform in another Zurich venue and several additional opportunities in a number of European cities have been made available to the band as well.

The band needs financial assistance to make the trip. Please help S.A. realize this career long dream by making a contribution to their Indiegogo Campaign."

The following is some additional info via Scarlet Architect's Ron Ruthersford, who has been known to visit MATRIXSYNTH. His Roland TR-808 was listed here. Some of you might remember Ron from previous PNW synth meets.

"In 1982, Scarlet Architect produced a 4-song EP and pressed 1000 copies of it. That EP garnered some recognition in synth pop circles, particularly in Europe, most notably for the songs 'Rose Grey' and 'Falls Away.' 'Rose Grey' was on the dance club charts in 1982 for ten consecutive weeks. For my fellow gearheads, my two bandmates and I recorded the entire EP in one session in a 24-track studio outside of Chicago using only my trusty TR-808, a Casio MT-30, a Casio VL-Tone (through an MXR flanger), and an SCI Pro-One (and of course our voices). It was great fun and a very fond memory.

We are re-releasing the four songs from that EP and seven additional songs from that period that were also professionally recorded but were never before released. The re-release, called Eternal Return, is coming out in September via Genetic Music (www.geneticmusic.de) and will be available on vinyl and CD and as downloads. The vinyl edition will only contain nine songs, while the CD will contain all eleven songs. All songs will also be available from the usual download sources.

Additionally, we have been contacted to play on Balcony TV in Zurich, Switzerland, and have also now been contacted by a few other places/people in Europe to potentially play a few more gigs if we can make it over there. In an attempt to do this, my bandmate has put together an Indiegogo campaign to try to raise funds for our 'mini tour.' The Indiegogo campaign can be found here. A great deal more information can be obtained from the video on the Indiegogo site. If we can achieve our funding goal, we might also be doing gigs in Germany and the UK.

For additional info about the band, we can be found at www.scarletarchitect.net and on Facebook. There are also several songs available for perusal on YouTube."

Cowboy and the Vocoder by Redmartian

The track is now available here: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/redmartian9

"The song was recording using the MMM for bass and vocoder carrier. The lead is a jupiter-6 and the drums were done using a Sequential DrumTraks. The lead and vocoder (Roland SVC-350) parts were played manually along with the bass/drums which were sequenced using midi via Logic."

Some of you might remember Cowboy and the Vocoder from these previous posts.  The story behind this track has a somewhat intersting and quirky history.  Cowboy was VoiceEncoder's dog.  VoiceEncoder is known for his vocoder videos and demos that became somewhat of an obscure synth meme.  His demos actually came up in a recent conversation I had with someone.  VoiceEncoder would often feature his dog Cowboy in his videos.  Cowboy would just be lying on a bed somewhere while VoiceEncoder talked to him through a vocoder.  Sadly Cowboy passed away on Monday, March 23, 2009 (click through for a tribute post).

The second half of what makes this track special is that it is one of the first tracks predominantly featuring the Mattson Mini Modular (it might actually be the first) [Update: according to Redmartian, "it was the first 'song' on the MMM. I did a few musical demos and orchestrated lute pieces, but this was the first 'pop song'."] It was composed by Redmartian as a tribute to Cowboy.  The lyrics are a dedication to Cowboy and the videos he was featured in.  Below are two videos for the track.  The bottom video was taken at the 2009 PNW Synth Gathering and features the Performance Music Systems Syntar in place of the Jupiter-6 for leads.   The Syntar was the first fully contained keytar synthesizer created by George Mattson, the man behind Mattson Mini Modular.

Cowboy and the Vocoder and the MMM

Uploaded on Nov 5, 2008 redmartian·73 videos

"A song written for a dog who likes to listen to the sound the Roland SVC-350 vocoder. This song features the MMM as well as a Sequential Circuits Drum Traks and a Roland Jupiter-6. (I don't have a Poly-800 .. sorry cowboy).

Here are the lyrics:

Do you know Cowboy
and the SVC-350?
Do you know Cowboy
and the Roland Vocoder?

Hey there Cowboy
I see you there
Lazy gazing
Gazing lazy
Whos my sweet boy?
You know its you.
I like to vocode and you do too.

No Poly-800 to drive the SVC
So I use an MMM as my carrier wave
No Poly-800 but Cowboy doesn't mind.
We all know its the Roland SVC-350 vocoder time.

With
Daniel Casado
Tuesday, September 24th, 7:30pm
Shoreline Community College, Music Building, Room 818
Directions to Shoreline Community College

Modular synthesizers offer endless sonic potential, but they require a deeper level of understanding than most instruments. The intuition of the musician must be complemented by the insight of an engineer.

In this presentation Daniel will briefly review basic electronics (so we're on the same page) and then apply those concepts to the operating parameters of a synth module and how it interconnects to others in the system. He will also discuss important points to be aware of when mixing modules from different manufacturers. Joins us for an evening of sources & signals, modules & modulators, controllers, sequencers, and patch cords, lots and lots of patch cords.

About the Presenter

Daniel Casado was a PNW AES Committee member until his job got in the way. He recently retired, having just completed a stint as Director of Engineering Support for McCauley Loudspeakers and is now able to serve again. Previous to that, Daniel was the N. W. manufacturer's representative for a number of leading audio manufacturers. With over 30 years in the professional audio industry, his experience includes front of house for national acts, mixing live performances for radio & television broadcast, sound system design & installation, manufacturing, R & D, and teaching electronics & audio theory. Daniel has extensive studio experience, and is a musician as well, with a life-long interest in electronic music."

John Bowen Solaris & Oberheim Matrix-12

Two pics via El Estereo on The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge: "Like father, like son...."

Two massive synths with similar editing displays. Both coveted and both revered as pinnacles in the synthesizer world. John Bowen started his career with synths as a Moog technician back in 1973. In 1976 he met Dave Smith of Sequential Circuits and began work with him. You can read up on some of John Bowen's history on the John Bowen Synth Design website here.  See this post for video of John talking about the Solaris and his history at a PNW MMTA SynthFest in 2011, and this post for a video of John discussing his days at Sequential Circuits back in 2006.

Steve Fisk's Yamaha CS60 for Sale

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

Steve Fisk wrote in to let me know his Yamaha CS60 is for sale in Seattle. If you are interested contact him at shfisk@gmail.com. For those of you not familiar with Steve Fisk, he's a Washington based audio engineer, musician and producer of quite a few bands including Nirvana, Soundgarden and more. Check out his Wikipedia article for the full list. Steve's involvement with synths goes back to the USC Moog studio circa 1973. He also gave a talk on the ARP 2600 at the 2011 PNW (MMTA) SynthFest (video posted here).

As for the CS60, here is what Steve has to say about it:

"YAMAHA CS-60 for sale. Excellent condition. Keyboard sliders, switches and ribbon controller all working great. No legs or pedal. The door to the powerchord storage nook is funky. Currently this synth's tuning is out of adjustment. It needs to have the oscs calibrated with these sensitive little trim pots. Its close to intune when you warm it up. Still the bug is the voice swapping and the individual oscs drift away from each other as it heats up. Even when its tweaked to spec there's a jankyness to the sound from the oscs flipping under your hand. If you play a C chord 4 times each one sounds different. The tuning knob helps. The tuning tweak can be upwards of $200 and needs to be done fairly often if you plan to use this live. If it sits in a studio or home the tuning should hold for a year or more. Its pretty sensitive for being so heavy. It likes to be moved flat. This all helps keep the tuning. Also heat and cold throw it out of tune. I give it a good warm it up for a half hour before I record with it. The Cs-60 got used in my bands Pigeonhed and Pell Mell and many other things I produced.

NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH THE CS80, the CS60 is the one osc version of the CS 80 (two oscs) and while that may not seem like much, it's a big diff. 2 oscs bring the chorus and warble where the one osc CS 60 is fat and huge it don't chorus and waft like the CS 80. Somebody pointed out on virtualsynth.com that a double tracked CS 60 gets you in CS 80 territory for under $10,000, an odd but valid point. Also I suspect the CS 60 is less buggy and more stable because it has fewer things to go out of tune and less internal heat too by dint."
