Moog - Spectravox - Sound Demos

video upload by NOISEBUG

https://www.noisebug.net

See the announcement post here.

"The long wait is finally over. The Moog Spectravox has finally been released and we couldn't be more excited!

Spectravox, the newest member of the Moog semi-modular family, is a groundbreaking tool for sculpting sound. An analog spectral processor based around a 10-band filter bank, Spectravox creates lively drones and colorful tonal sweeps on its own and adds resonant depth and psychedelic spectral movement to any external sound. Hook up a microphone and Spectravox becomes a 10-band analog vocoder with innovative integrated modulation of all of its filters. An exploration and expansion of the topology of the vocoder and filter bank, Spectravox is a highly flexible instrument and signal processor with a comprehensive patch bay for integration into studios of all sizes.

Synthesists have delighted in playing with the spectrum of sound since the Moog 907 Fixed Filter Bank appeared in the 1960s, creating lush vowel tones and multicolored timbral animation with hands-on level control of each frequency band of a sound. Unlike earlier fixed filter banks, however, the unique filters of Spectravox are no longer fixed in place and will jointly shift around the frequency space, allowing for the creation of otherworldly voltage-controlled spectral animation and vibrant phaser-like sweeps. With 10 filters whose variable resonance can morph from soft precision to shimmering choral effects, Spectravox reshapes the sounds you love into surprising new forms and brings a new world of sonic possibilities to your studio.

Spectravox is a fascinating standalone sculptable synthesizer voice thanks to its built-in carrier sound source of a thick analog Moog oscillator and white noise generator. With its combo XLR/jack program input, Spectravox becomes a fully featured 10-band vocoder with a secondary filter bank for analyzing the spectral makeup of incoming sounds. In VOCODER mode its 10 analysis filters map the timbral characteristics of any external sound onto any other sound you can imagine. Shape the warm analog oscillator of Spectravox with the dynamics of your voice, or use a drum machine to animate guitar chords in a mesmerizing broadband percussive space.

Spectravox uses the pioneering vocoding work of Bob Moog and Wendy Carlos in the late 1960s as its inspiration—work which was based on Homer Dudley's original designs from the 1930s and which was used to prominent effect in Stanley Kubrick's 1972 film A Clockwork Orange. Innovating further from these early designs, Spectravox uses 10 state-variable filters for its filter bank, all 10 of which are capable of being shifted with its internal triangle wave LFO or external control voltage. With the ability to emphasize vowel sounds via the Hiss and Buzz functionality of the Moog 16 Channel Vocoder, Spectravox is both a major step forward for analog filter banks and a loving exploration of early music technology history.

Scramble the frequency spectrum and create wonderfully unpredictable textures with patch points for each filter in the filter bank and included patch cables. Add analog warmth and subtle phasing to digital synthesizers and sound sources. Integrate Spectravox with other Moog semi-modular instruments or Eurorack modules with an extensive patch bay providing control over almost all of its parameters. Spectravox is a boundary-pushing instrument that invites you to explore creative new ways of shaping and sculpting sound."

Sonic Seed Trot & Hadouken

video uploads by Sonic Seed

Hadouken via Sonic Seed

S&H In S&H trig S&H out

S&H In 8, S&H Trig 9, and S&H Out 10 are a set of sampling and holding circuits. S&H In 8 inputs the signal that needs to be sampled,S&H Trig 9 inputs the Trig signal that samples the input of S&H In 8, and the sampling result is held until the next Trig signal triggers a new sampling, and the result is output at S&H Out 10. When S&H In 8 is not plugged in, the Trig signal of S&H Trig 9 samples the Noise Out of 2, resulting in a nearly random sampling result. The sampling-hold function can be triggered by pressing button 5 when the S&H Trig 9 has no insertion line.

Noise Trig & Noise Out

Noise Trig 1 and Noise Out 2 are part of the Noise generator, which continuously outputs a Noise without any input, which is the result of the sound amplified many times after the breakdown of the Zener tube. If a wire is inserted into the Noise Trig jack, the Zener tube will stop the breakdown state. At this time, give a signal, which can be Trig, square wave or any other signal, only if it is higher than 3.3v, it will again break through the Zener tube, constantly reciprocating, changing the output effect of the Noise Out.

Offset Out

Knob 3 changes the output voltage value of Ofset Out 4, when the button is pressed 5.Ofset Out 4 will output voltage according to the position of the knob, release the button, and the output is terminated.

Aux in & out

Aux In 6 and Aux Out 7 are a set of envelope non-tunable Vcas triggered by button 5. Aux In6 can be an audio input or other signal input, press button 5,Aux In6 input will be output from Aux Out 7 after adding an envelope control. Noise Out2's noise output is added to AuxIn 6 when AuxIn 6 is not plugged in. This means that you can directly control the noise output in Aux Out 7 by pressing button 5."

Good people make for good events and good gear, so lets meet them // London Synth & Pedal Expo 2024

video upload by DivKid

"What an amazing weekend we've just had! Here's a video with some of the people at the London Synth & Pedal Expo 2024. Held over this past weekend (Saturday and Sunday the 16th+17th of March 2024) in Studio 9294 in Hackney Wick, the London Synth & Pedal Expo is a free to attend show with plenty of synths, modular and pedal FX on show for people to come and play with.

As it takes good people to make good events (and the good gear we love) I wanted to focus on the people, asking who they are and what they do, more specifically how would they explain what they do to someone with no idea about synths, pedals and music tech. That led to some funny answers, all spread around various bits of b roll and footage from the event."

Sonic sculptures (generative modular music)

video upload by Electrum Modular

"(For Paula)

This patch was inspired by hours (weeks?) of listening to Morton Feldman’s exquisite music. It ended up quite different harmonically from Feldman’s pieces, partly due to the limitations of a modular system. The envelope generators and attenuators required some tweaking to get that balance between repetition and divergence, revolving and evolving. In retrospect, I could have left longer silences between notes.
NOTE: no delay effect used here, as it would have reintroduced a pulse.

“Almost all of Feldman’s music is slow and soft. Only at first sight is this a limitation. I see it rather as a narrow door, to whose dimensions one has to adapt oneself (as in Alice in Wonderland) before one can pass through it into a state of being that is expressed in Feldman’s music. Only when one has become accustomed to the dimness of the light can one begin to perceive the richness and variety which is the material of the music...Feldman sees sounds as reverberating endlessly, never getting lost, changing their resonances as they die away, or rather not die away, but recede from our ears, and soft because softness is compelling, because an insidious invasion of our senses is more effective than a frontal attack.”” -- Cornelius Cardew, quoted by John Tilbury in “On Playing Feldman”

BAF 2024: Soma - Enner

video upload by sonicstate

"At Buchla And Friends 2024, Sonic State caught up with Kevin at the Soma booth to find out more about the Enner synthesizer, which, due to increasing popularity, Soma have been ramping up production. The synth boasts a psychedelic aesthetic and excels at generating noisescapes while also offering the flexibility for melodic performances via its (we think copper) touch pads.

Enna is slightly reminiscent of the Lyra synthesizer, but with a pulse output section and a built-in piezo microphone, activated by a large pad. The Enner has a delay line with feedback and time controls for the left and right lines, and Kevin demonstrated the Bizarre Control which adds pseudo random modulation to the delay line leading to some screamy noise textures. The touchplates respond to touch, and Kevin even demonstrated the use of a metal scouring pad to create some crunchy tones. Enner can also be used as an external effects processor, to add some strange to your incoming signal.

Enner Price: 799 USD"

BAF 2024: EarthQuaker Devices - Wave Transformer

video upload by sonicstate

"At BAF 2024 Sonic State had the opportunity to speak with Karl from EarthquakerDevices about their latest release, The Wave Transformer oscillator. This complex single oscillator is fully analog and features a unique wave shaping circuit called Transform. Unlike traditional wave folders, Transform breaks the waveform apart, applies voltage math, and reassembles it on the output, resulting in an asymmetric crumpled waveform with added harmonics. The Wave Transformer offers seven different outputs and nine inputs, providing plenty of versatility for modulation and sound design.

The Wave Transformer also offers both hard and soft sync options, each providing their own sonic flavours, and by utilizing bipolar signals, users can achieve different sync sounds and even create filtering effects.

The Wave Transformer is available now. Price 199 USD"

"The Wave Transformer is an analog, vintage-voiced, voltage-controlled oscillator with over 8 octaves of accurate pitch tracking. It has 7 simultaneous wave outputs, including a unique Complex output.

The Transform control morphs from a basic waveform through many strange iterations into a complex, gnarled mass of audio mutations at the Complex output. You can yield countless variations on these permutations by combining this novel circuit with Hard Sync, Soft Sync, Linear FM and Exponential FM. Additionally, you can mute the source waveform to use the circuit as a harmonic gate/VCA, rendering The Wave Transformer a voice unto itself. If that is not enough, there is a Shape Insert that allows you to transform external oscillations and modular-level audio sources."

BAF 2024: New Systems Instruments - New Modules

video upload by sonicstate

"At Buchla and Friends 2024, Sonic State caught up with Evan from New Systems Instruments to discuss their latest modular offerings. Evan showcased three main modules: the Triphase Oscillator, the Harmonic Shift Oscillator, and the Inertia function generator.

The Triphase Oscillator offers three phases of a sawtooth oscillator with a bipolar mixer, allowing for extensive control and the creation of unique super saw sounds. On the other hand, the Harmonic Shift Oscillator provides control over level and stride which controls the spacing between harmonics, enabling users to create a wide range of sounds with non-integer spacing between harmonics. This FM-inspired oscillator introduces a unique twist by omitting negative frequencies typically associated with inharmonic FM. The Inertia function generator, with its rise and fall momentum controls, allows users to shape snappy envelopes, add peaks, and even function as an LFO at extreme settings. Additionally, it can serve as a versatile filter, producing squelchy filter sounds.

All of these modules are currently available on the New Systems Instruments website and selected stores. The Triphase Oscillator is priced at $385, the Harmonic Shift Oscillator at $365, and the Inertia function generator at around $345.

BAF 2024: Catalyst Audio - MIG Modules

video upload by sonicstate

"At Buchla and Friends 2024, Sonic State had the opportunity to speak with David from Catalyst Audio about their latest release, the MIG series vacuum tube modules. This series includes a VCO, mixer, VCF, VCA, and a noise source, all designed around new old stock tubes from Soviet fighter jets in the 80s. David explained that the collaboration between Buchla and Friends and ElectroSurf led to the development of these modules, with ElectroSurf handling the tube circuits and David working on the layout and production. The MIG series modules feature unique waveform shaping capabilities due to the use of two tubes, allowing for audio rate switching and balance adjustments. The VCO, mixer, filter, and VCA all offer distinct tonal changes and features that can be overdriven for added versatility. The noise module provides a wide range of sound possibilities, from pitched variations to white noise textures. Currently, they have about 1,500 tubes in stock, making these modules a limited edition item. BAF 2024: Dogbotic Labs - Synth Building Workshops

video upload by sonicstate

"At Buchla and Friends 2024, Sonic State had the opportunity to chat with Sean from Dogbotic Labs who offer online workshops for electronics, where participants receive a kit of materials and learn how to build their own circuitry over 10 weeks on Zoom. The workshops have attracted participants from all over the world, fostering a sense of community and collaborative learning. Sean, who is a composer and video artist performing under the name Isorhythmics, emphasizes the importance of experimentation and creativity in electronics, highlighting that it's not necessary to fully understand how things work as long as they can produce cool results.

One of the main workshops offered by Dogbotic Labs is the *DIY Synths* workshop, which teaches participants how to build their own basic synthesizer from scratch. Another popular workshop focuses on building a drum machine with a patchable interface. While the designs may seem complex, Sean encourages participants to customize their creations according to their own artistic visions.

Unfortunately, the kits are currently only available for purchase as part of the workshops, but Dogbotic Labs is planning to start selling the kits separately in the future. https://dogbotic.com/"
