Back From the PNW SynthFest 2011

Hi everyone, I just got back from the PNW SynthFest (Facebook page here). It was amazing. It was like a mini NAMM meets synth gathering. Three rooms of goodness. I met lots of great people and saw tons of great gear. The MMTA, Shoreline Community College, AES, and the Recording Academy PNW Chapter did a fantastic job hosting and organizing the event. I'll have plenty of video and pics that will go up over the coming days. Bookmark the PNW Synthfest label so you don't miss a thing. Also, I updated the link for the SynthFest banner on the right to point to the label now that the event is over. My goal is to bring a little bit of it to those that couldn't make it. With that in mind and because there is only so much time to post, work, and process, much of what I put up will be raw and unedited, giving you the experience of someone actually at the event. First posts should start going up tomorrow. As for now, it's time for me to catch up on posting! BTW, if you made the event and took pics and/or video, feel free to send it in.

MOOG MUSIC ANNOUNCES FREE HALLOWEEN SOUND SET FOR ANIMOOG

"ASHEVILLE, NC – October 28, 2011-- Moog Music today announced that it has paired up with sound design and synthesist wizards Drew Neumann and Kevin Lamb to concoct a brew of unsettling and bone-chilling sounds that are now available as a free download for Animoog, the incredibly popular, professional polyphonic synthesizer designed for Apple’s iPad.

Moog instruments have been iconic in popular music for more than 40 years, but they’ve also been responsible for creating the sounds of fear, suspense and terror in popular cinema. From Hollywood blockbusters to horror films, and even The Simpsons’ Halloween specials, Moog synthesizers have added a spooky element to thousands of soundtracks.

In the “spirit” of Moog’s scary side, and due to the phenomenal success of Animoog as one of the top-10 paid iPad apps on the iTunes store, Moog Music is offering a Halloween sound set to users for free on it’s website (http://www.moogmusic.com/content/animoog) through Friday, November 4.

“It’s always thrilling to hear the new sounds that artists and sound designers create when we have developed a new instrument,” said Cyril Lance, chief engineer at Moog Music. “In this case, Animoog inspired Drew and Kevin to create an entire library of spooky sounds for Halloween which we are extremely excited to share with you.”

The add-on to Animoog includes presets that span the range from sci-fi to horror, and, in some cases, look like their names. Users can watch for the Zombie Hand, run from the Cyclops, escape the Evil Portal, and avoid the Scythe of the Grim Reaper!

The heart of Animoog is Moog’s Anisotropic Synthesis Engine (ASE), a technology that has been in development at Moog for nearly six years. Animoog captures the vast sonic vocabulary of Moog synthesizers and applies it to the modern touch surface paradigm, enabling any user to quickly sculpt incredibly fluid and dynamic sounds that live, breathe, and evolve as they play them. Whether users are new to synthesizers or are professional musicians, Animoog’s unique user interface gives them the ultimate tool for total creative expression.

Animoog is currently available on the iTunes app store for the iPad and iPad 2 (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/animoog/id471638724?ls=1&mt=8) for a limited time price of only $.99 (returning to the regular price of $29.99 November 18).

Animoog Halloween Sound Set Installation Instructions:

Download the Halloween Sound Set at [insert link here] and un-zipthe file.
Connect your iPad (with Animoog installed) to your computer.

"A little demo of our Theremin. http://www.thereminplanet.com Natural sound with some delay effect added."

Fx Theremin ( With a Korg M1 keyboard )

Uploaded by thereminplanet on Jul 30, 2009

via this auction
"It is played by the motion of the hand in the magnetic field around the antenna without touching it! Built in a wooden case with a vintage classic look in brown wood ( black wood finish available at extra charge ) It's unique 'voice' is everywhere: first Star Trek series, old Sci fi/ horror films, orchestral compositions, actual movies and tv commercials. Many bands/artists had been playing it for decades, Beach Boys, Led Zeppelin, J.M Jarre, Blur, NIN, Massive Attack, Portishead, Eels, Gorillaz, Goldfrapp, great dj’s, etc"

Technical Features

1- Analog Theremin, handmade, fully assembled and ready to play!

2 - The circuit is a dual Hetherodyne oscillator ( like the Classical 1950´s designs used in countless Sci-Fi Movies ). The same type as the most prestigious theremins.

3- This design has a practical range of about 4 octaves over a hand distance of 13 inches between the antenna and the hand. The antenna can be easily unscrewed and placed inside the box to carry or put the theremin away.

4- It has two controls, one for pitch tuning and one for signal level , and a red light on/off led. The controls are placed far enough from the antenna, to enable any adjustment without changing the pitch of the sound

5- Signal output via 1/4" Mono Jack Socket (Similar to used on e-guitars and synthesizers)That allows the theremin to be connected to any guitar or keyboard amplifier , PC soundcard or mixer.
If you wish to connect it to a Hifi amplifier, you can use an easy to buy ´Jack RCA adaptor´

6- The Unit works with a single 9 volts battery - not included - We can add a Power Socket at extra charge ( see ´Custom preferences´ below )

7- Size:230mm. x 100mm. x 45mm.

8- Shipped in a box and with useful easy instructions to get the best results

9-TWO YEARS full guarantee in faulty parts, labour and shipping damage ( rarely needed )

Custom Preferences available at extra charge

Power Supply Socket: The theremin is optimized to work with a 9v alcaline battery to give more than 50 hs of continuous playing. Some customers prefer to connect the unit to the 220v (110 in USA). So we can modify the circuit to add a socket where you can plug a simple cheap 7-12 volts adapter ( not included ).

Black Wood Finish + Red or Blue led: Hand painted case."

Korg Polysix Clone CPU Board, KLM-367A

via this auction
"This is a brand-new replacement CPU board for the Korg Polysix, KLM-367A. If you are reading this listing, you are probably well aware of the Korg Polysix battery leakage issue, which in a worst-case scenario can make the original processor board irreparable. The circuit board in this listing is one of the excellent KLM-367A clones available from Jed Jorgensen. An online search should direct you to Jed's site for more info. Ebay has made it nearly impossible to add a link of any sort, sorry.

This is a premium build, with every chip mounted in machined-pin sockets, all-new electrolytic capacitors, instead of ceramic capacitors poly or silver-mica caps are used instead, and multi-turn cermet trimpots. In every instance possible, the chips and other rare components from the original CPU were transferred to the new board. Assembling the board was labor-intensive. EVERY recycled part from the old board had to be tested (I mean, it just wouldn't do to put any parts that were killed by the battery damage on the new board!), and the board has approximately 870 holes to fill with parts, and nearly that many pins had to be unsoldered from the original board. The third photo shows the process near the beginning, and the last photo shows the job complete. The board was then installed and calibrated to factory specs.

Installation: (If you are not comfortable with electronics, PLEASE get a qualified tech to install this) Back up your patch data, it will be lost during this process and need to be reloaded when done! You will need to unplug and remove the old board first (duh!). Be careful unplugging the cables, most of the connectors have been glued in at the factory, and the glue seal will need to be broken. Carefully unplug the processor chip from the original board, taking care to not bend any pins, and plug it into the new board. IMPORTANT: Do not forget to do this, the processor chip itself is the only piece you need from your original board, and is NOT included in this auction! Screw the new board into place. ALSO IMPORTANT: There will be a thick black ground wire going from the control panel to a ground point on the original board. This is the only wire that needs to be soldered, and it must be done. The grounding point is already prepared with solder to make this easy. Install the battery (included!), Plug all the cables into their correct sockets (nearly impossible to mess this up!), close the hood and play! There is no need to calibrate this board, it has already been done for you, and a different processor chip will not matter."

ANIMOOG demo, with TENORI-ON! By MIDI, through ALESIS IO DOCK - Turorial, Ambient IDM Performance

YouTube Uploaded by VJFranzK on Oct 28, 2011

"I'd rather play it with DOTS than use a keyboard like the rest! To do this was easy, if you have a USB MIDI device like this Alesis IO Dock - I plugged the MIDI OUT dongle on my Tenori-On W to a standard MIDI cable, then to the MIDI IN on the IO Dock. Start up Animoog, and press "SETUP" on the top bar. Press "Refresh MIDI Input(s)" if necessary. Then I selected the option "dock" from the list below. Then I pressed the "X/Y PAD" word on the top bar to go back to playing mode. The Animoog "listened" to the MIDI notes from Layer 1 of my Tenori-On, as if it was any keyboard! I then used layer 2, etc. to add drums and such, while my right hand operated the AniMoog's amazing touch pad and other controls. Enjoy these 3 jams! Which get more complex as the video goes on. Subscribe, comment, and send me your apps etc. for review!"
