"This Pro One is very clean with very little signs of use. All functions seem to operate properly. All keys play with gentle action, and are excellent. All controls seem to work as they should, octave switches on both oscillators click into place with no issues. No dirty pots! Jacks have been lubricated and all seem to be in good working order. This is a post "J-wire" model, and has membrane key contacts, but they are all in good working condition. We have not done full calibration to this synth, but it tunes up very nicely between oscillators, and stays in tune..."

New MTG Kawai R100 ROM Swticher Expansion Boards

This is a follow up to this post.  You'll find full details on the Music Technologies Group blog.

"As you may have seen in my previous post, my Kawai R-100 Drum Machine came with a 3-EPROM 'soundswitcher'. Since this is no longer available, I thought I would make my own. It’s not an exact clone of the Drumware Inc board...

I did a 2-layer board compared to the old Drumware single-layer board that was probably taped up by hand. In fact this is how I used to make SRAM memory expansions myself in the late 80′s. I even advertised them in the back pages of Polyphony magazine (for JX3P, OB DX, Polysix and a few others)."

Note there are only a few boards available, so if you are interested click through sooner than later.

New Firmware Available for Sequential Max Users

This one in via Plutoniq9:

"*I'm reposting this from the sequential yahoogroup for AH'ers. It was a fascinating project to work with Bob on. He truly is a master of the art! What i think is fantastic is that this project has taken a very "crippled" SCI instrument with limited use and turned it into a synth that has mass potential now. It has been a long process and I applaud Bob for taking the initiative and devoting a lot of his free time to make this possible. Without his efforts this would have probably never been realized.;

In addition to what is listed below, we were able to identify and fix a major bug in the Max having to do with enabling velocity and simultaneous midi cc control.

Also, I have performed this mod alongside Bob (there were a few revision), and I can vouch that it is flawlessly implemented and feels like a whole new instrument to work with.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Attn Sequential Max owners: With ideas and encouragement from Ryan Palmer
>(AKA Plutoniq9), I have developed a new version of
the Max firmware which has the following features:

1) 100 downloadable programs (Max had 20 that could be downloaded)
2) Storage for ~3200 notes in two songs (Max could store about 500)
3) Unison mode (Max did not support Unison mode)
4) Battery-backed storage of downloadable programs and songs
5) MIDI chan and a few other parameters are also non-volatile
6) Three sets of programs in EPROM, loadable on request:
a) Max orig 80 programs plus Six Trak Unison programs
b) Six Trak orig 100 programs
c) Multitrak orig 100 programs, without chorus and velocity sens parameters
7) Current voice parameters, including any CC changes, can be stored in program
#99
8) Program #99 can be copied to any other program.

[One quick follow up.

7) & 8) listed below addresses the Max's limited patch creation abilities. Now, using any standard midi cc controller you can create & save onboard any patches you create without the use of a computer. Prior, patch creation could be done only by a sysex sound dump TO the max (which of course would be lost once you switched off the unit). The max always had cc parameter support, however any changes to the current patch made via CC's would not be reflected when you sent a sysex sound dump to the Midi out. Shitty huh?]

9) MIDI receive buffer increased from 64 bytes to 128 bytes

[doubles the midi receive buffer from 64-bytes to 128-bytes. It doesn't sound like much, but it enables a ton more simultaneous cc control messages to be sent to the max without choking it up. Previously, more than four cc messages sent to the max while sending midi note data would lock up the voices. Also with unison now able to be enabled, that number dropped down to one! With the larger midi buffer, I haven't yet been able to lock it up in either poly or unison mode (I tried 5-6 simultaneous cc's in unison with no problem).]

To support these features, the memory chips in the Max need to be upgraded.
This requires good soldering skills. Chips need to be removed from the board, a
few traces must be cut, and a few wires need to be added.

The following parts are needed:

27C256 (new code EPROM, Flash memory chip can also be used)
32Kx8 NVRAM DS1230Y-150+ (installed in place of U12)
24-pin machined pin IC socket for NVRAM
28-pin IC socket for EPROM
Two BAT48 Schottky diodes
1K 1/4W resistor
>
>If anyone is interested in trying this mod in their Max,
>please contact me and I will provide more information and instructions. If
there is enough interest, I can make a small PC bd which will simplify the mod,
but add about $10 to the cost.
>
>I am not selling anything, except possibly the pc boards, but will help anyone
who is interested and has the necessary skills to perform the mod.
>
>Bob Grieb

"(c) 2013 by AnalogAudio1

I played the ARP Axxe with reverb effects from a Lexicon MPX-500 and delay effects from a Roland DEP-5.

The ARP Axxe is a monophonic synthesizer. It came out 1977 and was the competitor of the Micromoog. It is a cutdown version of the ARP Odyssey."

"Monophonic analog synthesizer with flexible sound generation (2 VCOs, cross modulation, noise, ringmod) as well as overdrive and feedback. Loopable envelopes and a MIDI-syncable LFO are there for modulation duties. Patch sockets for contol voltages enable interfacing e.g. with a modular synth.

The synth is capable of many sounds, from mighty leadsm thick basses, crazy FM sounds to cutting sync sounds. The version 4075 is equipped with a really good sounding ARP 2600 lowpass filter.

VCO1 has a six-position octave switch (from LO to 2´), sync, pulse width modualtion and a sub-oscillator. Up to two wave forms can be mixed with the wave-mix switches: triangle/sawtooth or sine/pulse. VCO2 can be removed from the keybaord tracking, has six octave ranges, switchable wave forms (saw, triangle and pulse), a detune control and a control for modulation intensity with Env1 or Env2 as selectable modulation source. Cross modulation of VCO2 to pulse width or frequency of VCO1 is available, too.

The oscillators, the ring modulator and the noise are mixed in the mixer section at the bottom where you´ll find also the lovely feedback control and en external audio input.

The filter is a resonent ARP 2600 low pass filter with keyboard tracking (0%, 50% or 100%). Besides the modulation intensity control for Env1 there´s also a modulation control for VCO2 or the LFO as source.

The first ADSR type envelope is assigned to the filter. It can be inverted and even looped. The second ADSR also offers an inverting function, additionally triggering by the LFO and different keyboard trigger modes. In the DRONE position of the master switch the VCA stays opened what makes filtering external sounds possible without constantly pressing a key.

The LFO can be synched to the MIDI clock if desired, offers nine wave forms and can e assigned to the pulse widths or frequencies of the VCOs.

The VCA is being modulated by the 2nd envelope, has a volume control and two overdrive modes. in the lowest section left of the mixer you´ll find additional tiny controls for main tune, pitch bend intensity, glide time, dynamics and modulation intensity of Env1 to VCO1´s PWM."

"Roland Jupiter-6 Analog Synthesizer in excellent condition with only very minor wear from normal play. Includes manual on CD, power cable and Gator Hard Case.

The Jupiter-6 is an incredible analog synth. All of the Jupiters have a sound that was unlike any other synthesizer and the Jup 6 is no exception. This sound is due in part to classic analog Roland technology in its filters, modulation capabilities and a thick cluster of 12 analog oscillators at 2 per voice. Easy and intuitive programming via front panel sliders, knobs and buttons for all your tweaking needs.

The Jup 6 is a scaled down version of the Jup 8 in terms of programming and polyphony. However the Jup 6 has some major improvements of its own such as newly added MIDI control and better tuning stability! While the Jup 6 does have MIDI, the implementation is very rudimentary and hard to control..."

"Endeavour - Space Line Generator" Analog Synth / Sequencer w/ Theremin Controls

Dr. Blankenstein on eBay (RSS)

"Dr Blankenstein's "Endeavour Space Line Generator" Analog Synth / Sequencer w/ Theremin Controls

Back from a long video uploading break with a new prototype demo... and many more to follow. What we have here is a 10 step analog sequencer, running a square wave oscillator. Each step of the bass line can be tuned via the 10 main sequence knobs. This unit is intended as a stand alone sound creation device, at has NO sync out or in... hence why it should be considered a "space line generator" ;) Oh, and for added fun.. there is an ILLUMIRINGER put on the end of the signal chain for epic tweaking!

All of this is controlled via the 3 sections at the top of the unit... each section has the option to be either controlled via a knob, light sensor or pair of touch points (at the bottom of the unit.) First, we have the "SPEED" which will control the tempo of the sequence. Next, there is the "PITCH" controls.. and finally the "FILTER" which is tied into the effects section. The filter fx can be turned on and off via the switch to the left of the Knob / Sensor control switch on the right most control section.

The touch points are set up in pairs... from left to right... 1st Speed, 2nd Pitch, 3rd Voltage Drain, 4th Effect. They can be used in pairs OR in different configuration to get some really exciting expression out of the piece.

The light sensors on this thing are SICK! Massive range... super sensitive! So many way to jam on them... I couldn't include all of them in the video there were SO MANY... so use your imagination.

Unit can be turned on via a mission impossible style key start... or big red momentary button. 9v Power adapter power for maximum juice'ness (this thing is a bit of a beast). This is a solid PCB design, not perf board etc... so I would expect to see a few of these popping up on the website / eBay in coming days.

Hope you enjoy.. hit me up if you have any questions... or want to pick one up. AND PLEASE.. make sure to SUBSCRIBE for more cool one of a kind designs ;)"

This is a nice way to bring some variation in your pb 4/4 rhythms.

Patch:
Quantum dust modulates the fm of the 4/4 gong (in trad) when signal enters the comparator.
Feeding signal manually would give you nice control over change.

In the last part the cable is patched, and changing the response of the upper gong gives you periodic control over change.

When I go dubbin with the plumbutter this is normally how I like to start.
Left output clean, right output through fx, patch a few cables and than just playin for hours and hours..

Patch:
3-roll provides pulses for left and right gong
4-roll pulse provides pulse for mwrs, more or less in tempo with the 3-roll, so the pulse modulating the gong fm will always move and give interesting effects

mwrs orange pulse out modulates fm of right gong which gives the changing timbre of the 'chord'.

playing with the response time of the right gong gives interesting changes in delay movements

feeding signals, as deerhorn and quantum dust, into the ultrasound, which goes through the same fx as the chord, give those drone-ish, noisish sounds

Description via Wikipedia [it's interesting that individual synths are now getting dedicated pages there]:

"The Roland MC-202 (MicroComposer) is a monophonic analog synthesizer/sequencer released by Roland in 1983. It is similar to the TB-303 and SH-101 synthesizers, featuring one voltage-controlled oscillator with simultaneous saw and square/pulse-width waveforms. The unit is portable and can be operated from batteries or an external power supply.

The internal synthesizer features one voltage-controlled oscillator with simultaneous saw, square/pulse-width and sub-octave square waveforms. Additionally there is a 24dB Low Pass filter, an LFO and a single ADSR envelope generator.

In terms of circuitry, it is nearly identical to the earlier SH-101 synthesizers but lacks the noise generator, choice of LFO shapes and modualtion/pitch bend controls. However, unlike the SH-101, it does include a delay on the LFO. The two units also share a design aesthetic in terms of the control layout, casing, lettering, knobs and slider caps.

The MC-202 includes a sequencer that can play back two separate sequences simultaneously. Two sets of CV/Gate connectors on the rear of the unit allow for routing the sequences to external synthesizers. One of the two sequences is used to control the internal sequencer. The sequencer is programmed much like Roland's early digital MC-4 and MC-8 Microcomposer sequencers, whereby notes are entered with pitch, length and gate length. Additionally, each note in the sequence can be an accent and slide, which is similar to the TB-303 and the SH-101 and allows for so called acid sequences.

The sequences are lost if the unit is powered down, however a tape interface is provided so that sequences can be stored to and recalled from an audio tape recorder.

There are DIN sync inputs and outputs which allow the unit to synchronise playback, either as master or slave, with other DIN sync-equipped instruments such as the TB-303 or the Roland TR-808. The unit can also generate and sync to frequency-shift keying signals from a tape recorder."

Channel 1 has 15 sounds with the usual array of unrealistic instrument imitations and Channel 2 has 14 synth sounds plus a button to activate the 'manual' section of the synth. There is a slider to mix between the two channels and channel 2 can be detuned.

The 'manual' section comprises 1 VCO with a variable control between pulse and saw waves. There are also controls for pulse width modulation, noise and footings (32' - 2'). The 12dB filter has cut-off and resonance plus a dedicated ADSR envelope with a control for envelope amount. It has a nice wet and warm sound. There is a separate ADSR for the amplifier..."

via the listing: "If you don't know what this is or does, Google "Sequential Circuits Model 700 Programmer". If you know what it is, then you know how rare and unique it is. One of Sequential's first products, only 200 or so were made. List price for the "Mark I" was $1195.00 in 1979. I bought this one from Sammy Hagar's keyboard player, who had used it with a Minimoog on Hagar's "Red" tour. The walnut wood side panels had been painted black. I used it with a modular synth both live and in studios. In 1983?--it "lost" its memory. I took it to Sequential, and they replaced the memory battery [for free] and also gave me a schematic when i requested one. In 1985, I sold the modular synth [dang!] but kept the Mdl. 700 in case I got another modular--I never did. It was unused until 2001--I turned it on and the fuse blew. I took it to a Tech, who replaced the power capacitors and "put heat sinks on the voltage regulators"? Unused again until 2010-when I took the battery out to replace the dead one in my SCI Six Trak. Recently tried to check the outputs with a voltmeter. It looks like one of the envelope generators works, and one does not.I don't know what should be on the other outputs without the memory battery. Also, the display numbers do not always change when you turn the Bank Select knob. Otherwise, it is in very good physical condition-no rust, and only minor scratches and dings. It will definitely require Technical help. No returns. USA only shipping."
