EigenD - Integrating Controllers

Published on Jun 30, 2014 Mark Harris·19 videos

"Not only is EigenD now free, but is also open source.
In this video I reveal a new EigenD agent I have written that allows a much deeper integration of controllers into the EigenD world.
This new agent converts midi into the much higher resolution and higher rate signals used by EigenD, it also supports 3 dimensions on every key press, strip controllers, breath and pedals.
Finally, its support midi voice per channel and 14 bit midi for higher resolution and more expressive control.
(useful for newer controllers like Madrona Soundplane, Haken Continuum, Linnstrument and iPad apps)

I demo a simple midi keyboard setup and move onto an unusual Leap Motion setup, then a iPad ThumbJam setup and finally Eigenharp Pico connecting via a second instance of EigenD on a different machine. (ThumbJam/Pico demo voice per channel)

Included in the video is some information on how this is all setup.

Note: Ive not yet released the 'midi device' agent, as I'm still improving it, but it will be made available soon along with all my other agents - it will be free and also open source."

"This is some footage of me working on a composition for my up coming release. The theme of the song Nagini is about the simi-divine beings that are half human, half snake. Known as the guardians of precious minerals, gems and other riches stored beneath the earth.
They dwell in splendid subterranean or sub-aquatic abodes, or in inaccessible mountain caves.

This is the vision that inspired the modular synth composition."

MOD input select the wavetable.
Param1 selects the CV pattern
Param2 selects the gate pattern
Param3 selects the gate density

We're working on the lowpass filter and delay, which are causing the crackle that can be heard in the recording. NOTE: This synth might change before the module is finalized. I may remove the delay and swap in the ability to control the scale using the SR input."

Dave Smith Instruments Pro 2 Demo by INHALT

Published on Jul 1, 2014 INHALTVIDEO·28 videos

Update: INHALT just released a new remix EP. You'll find it here.

"If you like what you hear and would like to hear more please like our page on Facebook at:
https://www.facebook.com/INHALT.US

Dave Smith Instruments asked us to return to the sound design world and join a stellar team to create some of the patches for their upcoming super synth: the Pro 2. Since we're avid and long time users of the Pro One, the name alone peaked our curiosities. Once we got the absolutely stunning synth back to our studio, we were blown away not just by the raw sound quality of the new voice architecture, but also by the sheer number of possible control options. If there is a synth out there that is truly the best of all worlds and that is almost intentionally designed to sit right in the middle of a full studio set up, it most certainly is the Pro 2. 4 CV outputs (that can be used as gate outputs too), 4 CV ins, audio input, dual MIDI outputs ... it's exactly the kind of thinking a professional studio and live musician would employ in synth design.

As a sound designer, what was most interesting was the arrangement of the new filters. Not only do both the SSM and SEM inspired analog filters sound fantastic on their own, but they can be used together to create very complex effects. Since their routing (serial, meaning one filter into the other, or parallel, meaning both filters running together) is completely user assignable and modulatable (all parameters regarding the filter can be accessed via the modulation matrix and modulated by pretty much anything) incredibly rich and complex effects can be created. The first patch (first string sound you hear in this video) takes full advantage of this new architecture to create a very sophisticated and distinct jet phasing effect.

The same tonal integrity can be found on the digital delays. This time around there is a new BBD style analog modeling delay that is warm and lush. When combined with delay time modulation from an LFO, an extremely rich chorus effect results. I might also mention that the audio input itself is of very high quality and presents a clean and full bodied pre amplifier stage that just sounds good. The last two sounds in the video use this input with a bass guitar.

Absolutely no external fx or sequencing were used when recording this demo of our patches for the factory bank. Everything you hear was done with the internal sequencer, live playing, and employing the abundant set of controls on board the Pro 2. Also, these are all single patches, so no multitracking was involved. The sounds were tracked via a Precision 8 mic pre using both outputs from the Pro 2 and straight into a Digidesign 192 IO feeding Pro Tools HD."

"This machine sounds different from other string synths in that it sounds very haunting and the bass end sounds just down-right mean!!! The low end is deep and gravelly giving it this tremendous "growl" to it. It also has piano and clavinet sounds which can be fun and can really add to the texture of the strings, viola & cello sounds or used by themselves.

You will notice there are several slider caps missing, but the actual slider pots are still there and work just fine. You can move them with your fingertips or a pen cap, or just replace the caps like I always meant to.
This synthesizer, while a bit beat up looking, is 100% operational and sounds absolutely fantastic. The (very rare) original hard case is being included in the sale as well!!!"

Ambika

"Ambika is a monster hybrid polysynth. Its design consists of a motherboard and 6 voicecards, each of them carrying a turbocharged version of the Shruthi hybrid synthesizer (digital waveform synthesis through analog VCF/VCAs). Whether you want to use this as six monosynths, a six-voice polysynth, or anything in-between is up to you: MIDI channels/keyboard range/patches/voices are distinct concepts, allowing complex layered, split, multitimbral setups. In addition, each voice has a switched individual output."

"Ambika offers all the delicious digital waveform synthesis algorithms (FM, vowel synthesis, wavetables…) that made the Shruthi famous, and some newcomers too: CZ-style emulation of digital filters and wave sequencing. The oscillators signal is now processed through a fuzz/distortion and a bitcrusher before being sent to the analog filters. The modulation possibilities are immense thanks to the 4 LFOs (3 synchronized and 1 free running), 3 ADSRs, and the large modulation matrix (14 slots, 4 modifiers)."

"People talk about the 'thick' sound of old analog synth filters. As a result, they are widely copied. But if you want a filter that sounds REALLY special and good, forget the solid-state imitations or the hokey "virtual analog" business - - you need a TM-2. It's real--all natural, all tube. The TM-2 is also ideal for giving weight and power to drum machines and bass lines in techno music or remixes. OR it works as a wah pedal, by plugging in any standard expression pedal. It's a sound you JUST CAN'T GET from other filters on the market! The TM-2 consists of two twin-t bandpass filters in parallel. Unlike any other such filter on the market, these filters use vacuum-tube pentodes.. NO semiconductors. The two filters have their resonant frequencies spaced 2 octaves apart--one filters the all-important midrange, the other filters bass. They are voltage-control-tuned with a custom-made "Vactrol" type dual optocoupler. Resonance or sharpness for the filters is adjustable. The filter outputs pass through an additional pentode which may be used as a VCA for electronic-music effects. (TM-2 may be used only as a tube VCA by turning down the filter resonance.) Output signal is buffered, so it can drive any line-level input."

Yamaha YMF262 OPL3 programming using Evolution UC-16

"A demonstration of my software for programming the sounds of the Yamaha YM3812 OPLII / YMF262 OPL3 FM synthesizer chip. The notes are played on a Yamaha V50 (being used as a MIDI controller) while the programming of the sounds is done on the 16 control knobs of the Evolution UC-16 control surface.

The PC contains a SoundBlaster AWE64 card which is controlled by a custom piece of software. The Yamaha V50 keyboard is plugged into the PC using MIDI and sends MIDI note on and note off messages. The Evolution UC-16 control surface is plugged into the PC using MIDI over USB and sends MIDI controller change (CC) messages. The custom software receives both types of messages and writes OPL3 chip register changes to the AWE64 card.

The controls are:

Carrier: multiple, level, attack, decay, sustain, release, waveform
Tuning
Modulator: multiple, level, attack, decay, sustain, release, waveform, feedback

A future version of this program may implement amplitude modulation (AM), vibrato (VIB), two envelope generator types (EG-TYP), key scale rate (KSR) and key scale level (KSL)."

This post hosts all Featured listings that drop off the top of the site for the month. You'll find a link to previous months below. Many of these listings will obviously end in time and some will get re-listed (always check the listing). They will remain here as a record of what went up over time. For some, you can click on the image to see what they went for on eBay. Some expire from eBay and some expire from MATRIXSYNTH CLASSIFIEDS. This list only hosts some of the more interesting and unique items that have gone up over time, so be sure to check out the Auctions channel for everything else. You can of course search for any synth with "auction" in the search box on the top left of the site. If you click through the auction links you can see what items went for. You can also search by serial numbers to track the history of specific synths.
