MonoMiK - the CV generator system

Published on Mar 21, 2015 Michael Kukat

"As promised - let's go a bit into tech details.

Introduced by a quick overview of the analog boards, this video mainly describes how all those control voltages are generated.

80 CV channels, -10V to +10V (plus some headroom for software-base offset correction), 16 bits resolution, update rate 1KHz. Done with very simple external hardware plus some tricks in the MCU to run everything off DMA.

So this is the most important thing of the digital control part. I use designs like this since the MiK-one and i never made any bad experience with them. Maybe not perfect for measuring equipment but totally sufficient for musical purposes.

Now the next video might take a while. Going back to finish the PCB for this and hacking some more software. GUI stuff and so. Need to add the rotary encoders and see if my plan works for them."

"Amazing Vintage Condition Buchla 200e 4 Voice Modular Synthesizer!
Rare!!!

Specifics:
260e - Duophonic Pitch Class Generator
291e - Triple Morphing Filter
266e - Source of Uncertainty
227e - System Interface
281e - Quad Function Generator x2
292e - Quad Dynamics Manager x2
225e - Midi USB Decoder
210e - Control and Signal Router
259e - Complex Wave Form Generator x4
249 - Dual Arbitrary Funtion Generator
The Buchla 200e is a modular analog synthesizer for people who want to build sounds from scratch. + two dozen 200 series modules (past and present) + a growing third-party market + the infinite possibilities of the Buchla 200e will drive you insane--in a good way!

The Buchla 200e is a 21st century rebirth of the 70's classic 200 series analog modular systems from Buchla. It is still an analog synthesizer, but with some 21st century improvements, most notably the addition of MIDI control, patch memory storage and digital hybridization. Other improvements include internal MIDI buses, more voltage controlled parameters, a router for signals and control voltages, velocity sensitivity, and a redesigned output section of the complex oscillator module. A few new modules have also been added including a duophonic pitch class generator and a triple morphing filter.

The 200e may be new but it is still a classic modular system. That means potential customers must start with an empty cabinet, and select the synthesis modules from the 200e series to design the system to their personal needs. It is even possible to add some of the original classic 200 series modules to it, and to add the new 200e series modules to an original 200 system. With five cabinet sizes to choose from (from 2 panels to 18 panels), no two systems may look alike, and they can range from just a module or two to the complex analog beast pictured above.

The 200e series is not exactly analog either (nor digital). The 200e series is truly an analog-digital hybrid modular system with an analog user-interface but a state-of-the art underlying electronic system designed to provide stable, dynamic musical sounds with exceptional sonic quality. Buchla's engineers sought the best possible designs for their modules which meant that in some cases the signal path may be truly analog, while in other cases they may in fact be digital. Almost all analog signals are also controlled by digital componentry for maintaining stability or to enable patch storage, for example. Speaking of patch storage, the 200e will only store knob settings and switch position but not patch cable routings."

This is the first realisation of a device with Resonant Neuron Synthesis, called the "Resonator Neuronium".
The new paradigmas are named complexity, order from chaos, self organisation of complex systems, networking and cooperation. From a certain complexity onwards a system is not even the sum total of its parts but a greater whole which gains totally new attributes than its sub structures. More about the philosophy of this device you can learn at
-> www.jayemsonic.de

The Resonator Neuronium has 6 analog resonant neurons. The net parameters can be programmed by the lefthand structure in form of a hexagon by use of knobs, buttons and LEDs.

We have 6 neurons with 6x6 = 36 net connections for one parameter. In order that summation and FM is connected, we have 2x36 = 72 net connections with individual pots for each node.
Net Programming
The rotary knobs are touch-sensitive and allow the net links by a simple touch of the metal (real gold) coated knobs. The intensities of "wi" or amounts are then displayed and edited by turning the respective knob of the receiving neuron. For better understanding, the routed net connection is displayed as a matrix-LED and displayed in the LCD as Tx (transmitter) -> Rx (receiver) value. If you have a summing net connection, LEDs lit green, with FM connections LEDs lit red.
The loops indicate the self-networking connection of a neuron. As described in the article, one can let the neuron become self oscillating by resonance or let it toggle swing with positive feedback dependent of the sign of the loop value.
The menu selection is made by the buttons within the hexagon to let the user not unnessecarily step through awkward menus. The menus are:

Summing Node

summing input node of the neuron

Neuron Frequency

basic frequency of the resonant neuron = cutoff

Frequency Modulation

frequency modulation input of the neuron
Stimulus Recombination

Recombination of wave segments (DNA) of the stimulus with other neuron's DNA by mating of the DNA

Stimulus Edit

Alteration (editing) of wave forms (DNA) of the stimulus of a neuron. Input by knobs at the LCD display.

Neuron Envelope

VCA envelope of each neuron with ADSR. Each neuron is led through an ADSR envelope which time-slices the signal and lets it being played from a midi keyboard.

Display/Menu
On the right side there is a 24 character LCD display placed with 6 soft buttons and 2 knobs. The pots at the display are used for different tasks, e.g. input of DNA waveform of the stimulus of a selected neuron. In the menu selection there are different things to be programmed, like e.g. the midi channel, multi mode (ranking of different channels to different neurons), VCA envelopes of the neurons and more. The rest of the keys is used for selection of the preset memory and the switching between main menu and edit menu.
All analog neurons in- and outputs are lead out through a 25 pin D-SUB connector at the console back. By this you can cascade 2 or more Resonators to a greater network.

In/Outputs
Two audio inputs are available who feed neuron 1 and 4. Thus you can use any kind of external signal to excite the network. So the Resonator becomes a tool for sound processing as well as a sound production instrument.
Each neuron has an own last stage VCA envelope with its own output. It is imagineable to let the outputs drive 6 single speakers in a room to form a sound installation; a sourround 5.1 application could be possible as well.

The 6 neurons with their individual VCA envelope are mixed to a stereo mix with an additional VCA envelope. Those appear at the output jacks L=left and R=right.

Midi

At the back side there is the well-known midi trio to trigger the neuron envelopes and stimuli by an external keyboard or sequencer. Also certain CC controllers can be sent or received for parameter changes and neuron interactions."

MonoMiK - basic digital control test

Published on Mar 21, 2015 Michael Kukat

"Weekend, DIY time. Fixed some issues seen in the last video, so i could successfully verify the analog part now and see if my digital control stuff works as intended.

Running all 4 VCOs in parallel, through the transistor ladder filter, making some noise. Most LEDs work fine now, the prototype construction still has some minor issues and i need some more time to dive back into where i left off some years ago.

And due to the positive feedback on the last video, and a general feedback that people find my videos educating and inspiring, the next one will be about some tech stuff of this digital control."
