Moog Music Brings Back the Classic Modular IIIp Synthesizer

"Synth fans everywhere are rejoicing as Moog Music has announced today that they will be creating a limited edition replica of the classic IIIp Synthesizer. With only 40 new IIIp units available worldwide, this is an extremely limited release. Vintage King has a small number of these synthesizers and we are starting to take pre-orders as of today.

What can you expect from the new IIIp reproduction? As with the other recent systems that Moog has recreated, the brand is dedicated to replicating the original down to the smallest details. Built based on original documentation, circuit board and art files, the IIIp will feature 37 hand-built modules, including 10 901-Series oscillators, the 905 Spring Reverb and the 984 Matrix Mixer.

The history of the Moog IIIp is a storied one. Dr. Robert Moog, the beloved genius behind the namesake brand, began working with hundreds of musicians in the 1960s to develop a method of expanding electronic music. The idea was to push beyond the basic sound generators that had previously been created using old radio and recording studio equipment.

After years of research, the results of Bob's efforts led to him to start building individual models and custom modular systems. As orders grew in numbers, Bob began assembling a team of ten techs who would help him handbuild these early synthesizers in his New York-based storefront space.

While the original three synthesizers (Synthesizer I, II and III), were built into large cabinets meant for use in studios, the IIIp was designed to be more mobile. Bob would take the formula of the previously released IIIc pre-configured synth and put into a portable 3-cabinet unit that would make up the IIIp.

Moog synthesizers are world renowned for having ushered in a new era in the sonic exploration of music, thanks in part to users like Wendy Carlos, Isao Tomita, Kraftwerk, Gary Numan and beyond. Perhaps the best use of the IIIp synthesizer would be in The Beatles' 'Here Comes The Sun,' as George Harrison and Manfred Mann's Mike Vickers programmed a piece of synth magic for one of the pop world's most beloved songs."

"Hi guys! I just want to share another captured moment with elektron gadgets. Basically I toggle between a few patterns on the Analog Four which is managing the melody while the Octatrack generates the rythm and drum sounds. I've programmed an easy scene which modifies some of them.

The structure of the 'track' is very simple, it starts growing up until a break point and then fall down, but it seems an interesting result to me, so here we are again.

Please, let me know what do you think about it. In case you're really tired of my stupid videos, let me know too ;)

"Just testing the FM part of the Peak. I just set up a basic sequence, and recorded myself tweaking the parameters. And tried to make every change visible.

I set up FM OSC 3 to 1 and FM OSC 2 to 3 in the mod matrix. And they are controlled by mod env 1 and 2.

Recorded straight to Cubase without any effects or prosessing. (Forgot to normalize and use anything on the master bus)"

The DFAM is synced to the Mother-32 via the Assign output, with the Mult being used for the DFAM. The DFAM is returning the favor by sharing it's sequencer & Envelopes with the Mother-32."

"Japanese vintage analog drum machine Rhythm Box MK-2 probably from the 1970's. There is no sign of manufacturer or brand name any where so I'm not sure if this is one of similar looking Columbia's Rhythm Box series or not.

The unit appears to be working fine, all the preset sounds played fine as being tested and the knobs working as they should. Maybe a slight scratch noise and bad contacts on the switches and knobs, which could do with some adjustment/servicing if required."

"For the 5th video in the series we take a look at arguably the 'middle' chunk of the synth, which is the mixer section. We have volume control and on/off switches for each of the 3 internal oscillators a noise generator with white and pink noise and the external input. We delve into feedback looking at the options to root the main output through to the external input and level control when no external input is present at the physical input. We also look at rooting feedback from the mixer back to the mixer (cutting out the filter and VCA). Finally (as the jacks are there) we take a quick look at the LFO outputs too."

Modular Generative Drone - C-Beams Glittering Near the Tannhauser Gate

"Another scary/giant drone from the 'Seriously Sputnik' case. Don't worry -- I'll return to more melodic stuff by combining this case with another!

This tune is completely generative. There's no pre-set sequencing (which shouldn't be surprising if you've listened to it). Although there is a general tone to the patch I've found it very interesting to just sit and listen as it morphs. Sometimes there are some big surprises that will most likely never be repeated.

Most CV is from the West Coast Random source, with some added in by the Quad Function and Trigger Source (with a bit of self-patching). FM and Timbre shaping are happening on the two oscillators (Oscillator and Dual Oscillator). Quad VCF/VCA is used as a mixer, with its outputs going through Disting in ping-pong Delay mode and then 2hp Verb."
