Touché & Moog - Expressive E Coming to Moogfest 2018

Published on May 16, 2018 Expressive E

"Composed & Performed by Arthur Bouflet.

To promote Expressive E's presence at the 2018 edition of the Moogfest, and to showcase the collaborative possibilities of Touché and Moog products, this video demonstrates some great sounds created using Touché connected to classic synthesizers from the Moog range.

Thanks to built-in USB, CV and MIDI connections, Touché can be tightly integrated to both hardware and software synths, as shown in the video with a Subsequent 37, the Model D iOS app, and a DFAM, all from Moog.

This video also lets us see a custom wooden skin for Touché, labeled with a golden “Moogfest 2018” logo on it. This custom skin will be available as an add-on for each purchase of a Touché at the Moogfest - Units will be available on sale, at the “Modular Marketplace” inside the festival."

E-mu Morpheus Synth Demos

E-Mu Morpheus Z-Plane Synth Quick Run Through of Sounds Published on Feb 3, 2017 Electric Denim Studios

Three demos, previously not posted, in order of length. Above is a walkthrough. Below are pure sound demos.

"I love some of the Saws and Pads in this synth. I thought I would run through some of them so you can hear them. The Z-Plane filter sounds pretty awesome too."

E-mu Morpheus synth demo, by Pulse Emitter

Published on Feb 9, 2014

"E-mu Morpheus Z-Plane synthesizer, 1993. All sounds custom programmed and played live with no external effects, just reverb and chorus from the unit itself. 'Liquid' is the first word that comes to my mind when describing the sound of the Morpheus. Then 'ethereal'. It's a powerful and easy to program synth, and I know it can do a variety of styles, but for me it's an ambient music machine. It sounds like some multidimensional jellyfish swimming in the aether. Creating sounds on this thing takes dedication, there are 197 different filters to choose from. And so you know, the presets in this synth are pretty terrible, you won't find anything like what i have here in there at all."

Some distortion from :32 to :55 and then it's gone.

"Z-Plane Synthesizer rackmount module with ASIC chips to deliver sweepable parametric 14-pole digital filter "cubes" (the Z-plane filter). The Z-Plane filter is composed of up to eight complex filters that model and interpolate resonant sound characteristics. In this demo track you can hear some single notes, chords and sequences to give you a conception about Z-Plane filter synthesis possibilities of this legendary machine."

Synthrotek:s ROBOTOize Pop Music! - Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit

Published on May 16, 2018 synthrotek

"Do you desire to have a vocoder, pitch shifter, speak-n-spell effect, vibrato, 8-bit modulator and a bit crusher sounding module all in a lo-fi heavily CV controllable package? Well surprise! we read your mind! The Roboto module is all these and more (and it has a neat Cylon looking graphic that lights up). Check it out!

Features:
Can be in either Robot mode or Pitch mode, but not both. Handy LEDs tell you which mode you're in. The ROBOT button toggles between the two.
Vibrato toggles on and off. Works in either Robot mode or Pitch mode.
Robot and Vibrato CV inputs activate those modes (and deactivates in the case of vibrato) upon receiving a gate pulse. Gate pulses in these inputs are just like pushing their corresponding buttons. Expected transition is from 0V to +5V (and back to 0V), but it will handle any voltage within the power supply range without damaging the module. Transition between what is considered "off" and "on" is at approximately 2.3V.
Rate pot/input control the clock speed in the chip. A CV input of 0-5V will mimic the range of the pot, but voltages outside of this range will push the rate setting further.
The CV input is mixed with the voltage coming from the pot.
The pitch pot is used to pitch the audio up or down when in pitch mode. It has 7 zones/pitches; 12:00 is normal pitch, and there are 3 steps up and 3 steps down from there.
0-5V fed into the Pitch jack mimic the full travel of the pot (0V is lowest, 5V is highest, normal is ~2.5V). Voltages outside this range are tolerated but won't provide any added functionality.
The pitch pot is disabled when a plug is inserted into the CV jack.
Roboto is fun at parties.
IN LVL adjusts the level of the incoming signal.
MIX:
CCW=input signal only
CW=processed signal only."

"This synthesizer is fast becoming a collectors item as it was Elektron's first product, and SID chips are almost impossible to find these days. Sounds are crisp and aggressive, and really cut through the mix. Please note that this SID suffers from a known sidstation issue (according to gearslutz) and crashes every 1-2 hours of continuous use due to voltage spikes causing the RAM to freak out. This bug is non-destructive, just means you need to save your patches to a midi sysex dump often to ensure you don't lose anything, reset the RAM (in the menus) and reupload your patches. I'm getting rid of this synth because I came across 8 SID chips and am going to try to build one of the big a$% mb-6582's."

"While exploring the Graphic VCO I stumbled upon this extraordinary drone sound coming from the sub. Modulating the wavetable matrix in two directions. I then added some gates to the main output, doubled it up on some drums and added a bit of Black VCO bass for good measure. Just a nice discovery. Check out my Graphic VCO review coming very soon."

Atarivox+ Speech Synthesizer Review | Gray Defender

Published on May 16, 2018 GRay Defender

via Atari Age

"The AtariVox+ is a self-contained speech/music synthesizer and memory card for the Atari 2600 and 7800, Vectrex, and other video game consoles with compatible controller ports.

The heart of the unit is the SpeakJet--an amazing chip with phonetic speech, preset sounds and a five channel music synthesizer. All of these are controlled by the console via a serial interface emulated through the driver software.

Similar to chips used in 80s speech synthesizers but with extended capabilities, the speech retains a nice retro quality, making it a perfect partner for classic consoles.

Also onboard the AtariVox+ is 32K of non-volatile memory which can be used as a memory card. The flash memory will retain data without power for 200+ years.

An allocation scheme has been devised so that no file is ever overwritten, allowing many different games to store data on just one unit.

Dip Switch Settings

The AtariVox+ contains a bank of dip switches that allow you to select which mode the AtariVox+ will operate in:

AtariVox - for the Atari 2600 and 7800 (default setting)
VecVoice - for compatibility with earlier Vectrex speech synthesis - mainly for the speech-hacked version of Berzerk (Verzerk) and Y.A.S.I.
VecVox - for the Vectrex."

The SpeakJet has been used in a number of synth projects including the Flame Talking Synth and the Polaxix Emy eurorack module. See the SpeakJet label below for more.

"This fine specimen is in full working order. No aftermarket modifications (besides the knobs which were lost), the original fan is still in place. I opted to put a quieter one in my MKII. Few demos exist of this early FM synth but with some youtube searching you can find some terrible ones mostly.

Its alright cosmetically with no major breaks or problems. Yes there are dings to the corners and nicks on the surface but no more than to be expected for this type of age. I plan to list more photos tonight.

I have restored 3 of them and this is a mark 1. I have a mark 2 that offers the Kaypro II connectivity and I do not have a need for the mark 1 so with reluctance I am taking offers. There is an aftermarket kit available that lets you make a mark 1 a mark 2 but I didn't want to go down that road at this point.

Besides, its rarity and place in musical FM history are undeniable."

Strange Spectral Sweeps

Published on May 16, 2018 MAKEN0ISE

"Allen Strange wrote the book on modular synthesizers in the 1970s. Electronic Music: Systems, Techniques, and Controls. Unfortunately since the expanded 1982 edition, it has never been reprinted, and in today’s landscape where more people have access to modular synths than ever before, very few have access to the knowledge contained within. This video series will explore patches both basic and advanced from Strange’s text. Even the simplest patches here yield kernels of knowledge that can be expanded upon in infinite ways. I have been heavily influenced by Strange since long before I became a modular synth educator. Please share this knowledge far and wide.

This patch is an interesting audio processing procedure from Allen Strange, utilizing two low pass filters. The result is a subtle increase in the intensity of the original sound.

The sounds in this video are from Kimathi Moore's Morphagene Reels, available for free at https://freesound.org/people/makenois..."

New Grove Audio 5U GMS-214 Multimode Filter

via Grove Audio

"15 Different Filter Modes and VC Resonance

This multimode filter has two signal inputs mixed at unity gain and allows selection of one of fourteen possible filter configurations from front panel switches. If the resonance control is set high enough, the filter will start to oscillate.

Three CV inputs are provided. A 1V/Octave input controls the filter cutoff frequency in conjunction with the panel frequency control. A second frequency CV input has a level control, the resulting voltage being added to or subtracted from the base cutoff frequency resulting from the panel frequency control and 1V/Oct inputs. A resonance CV input followed by an attenuverter is combined with the panel resonance control to determine the amount of resonance that will occur. If the resonance control ia turned past about 80, the filter will start to oscillate with a clean sine waveform.

The MU version is housed in a 1MU (2.125 inch wide by 8.75 inch high) panel with DOTCOM compatible power connector."

This handful of minutes tinkering around demonstrates a wide range of sounds with the default circuits and controls in place, but I feel like I barely scratched the surface of what's possible. Sturdy construction, great feeling full-size keys. The instruction manual, which I cracked after making this video, is super helpful. Can't wait to get this rolling with my other mod and semi-mod synths. Love the easy to read labels and knobs worth a thousand words."
