Arturia Beatstep Pro + Moog DFAM as a Melodic 303 Acid Box

NineFourOneMedia

"I bought this as a drum machine but discovered it can do a lot more. Really surprised to hear how it sounds with a basic acid line. Outside of Ableton's Ping Pong delay, no distortion or other effects were used - the DFAM can sound like this out of the box."

LXR Drum Machine Destroyed by DBA Rooms, Ghost Delay & BX-8

NoizeHack

"This isn't subtle, this is Death By Audio. I built a Sonic Potions LXR drum machine a long time ago and never used it much, I decided to get it out and make this video with it. It sounds great, but the sequencer feels limited compared to an Elektron or something like that. The kick drum is going through the Ghost Delay and everything else is going through the Rooms reverb that I borrowed (the Rooms has sparkles on it and is great for making drones out of high hats)."

0-Kick 303 Lockdown

Chris Gilkes

"I attempted to create the kick drum patch shown on https://cdm.link/2020/05/make-a-909-k... but for some reason I couldn’t get the midi b to trigger the env. I ended up using the EON to trigger and it seems to work if anyone else is having issues. I have put a still of the patch at the end of the video if anyone wants it and if anyone one knows why midi b isn’t working (it flashes in time with midi a which I hoped was the correct setting) I would love something in the comments.

Anyway, as the kick sounds pretty damn good I wanted to hear it in context, so I fired up the 303, MD & OP-1 and had a little jam....

Thanks for watching etc.

Sequential Rev 2 DSI Synthesizer Review by Pure Ambient Drone

Pure Ambient Drone

Funny story in this one.

"The Sequential Rev 2 Synthesizer, AKA DSI Rev 2 is one of the very best analog synthesizers of modern times IMHO. The Rev 2 has great sound, an ARP and a sequencer. Its built in effects makes the Rev 2 a huge contender against any of the newer synthesizers of today. This video reflects my thoughts on the Rev 2 which is Dave Smith's newer take on the Prophet 8. I also include sound demos of the Rev 2 in this video."

Secret Squirrel - Novation SL MKIII 1.4 update | 8 Arps and a Soma Labs Pulsar 23

-CALC-

"Had some fun working on the 1.4 update for the Novation SL MKIII. This new update brings some killer features - 8 independent arpeggiators, probability and my favourite.... sequencer transpose! and a load more besides.

Whilst working on the update I came up with a little seed of an idea and this grew into Secret Squirrel.
The Pulsar is burbling away nicely and theres a load of the Spitfire Labs plug-ins hosted in Ableton.
0-Coast's fine triangle wave is the bass line and another arp is sent to the SH101.
Everything is sequenced from the SL though, doubling up the Spitfire lines with the synths, I'm basically using Ableton like a great big plug-in sound module.
Theres also a little bit of Summit warbling in the background too.

Grab v1.4 if you haven't already its so so nice."

This record is a collection of instant compositions implementing 12 new patches developed by Lisa Bella Donna for the latest Moog One firmware update.

Throughout this EP, Lisa demonstrates the synthesizer’s infinite modulation matrix, impressive envelope generator range and control, and more Moog One features that shine in these new Polymoog-style presets.

The majority of these tracks are mixed right on board without using a DAW. Other than two pieces with added percussion, all sounds you hear throughout this EP are from Moog One. Observe how the new patches unfold to create beautifully complex and rich sounds in an improvisational environment.

Korg MS20ic To Get an Update?

Thought this was interesting. The KORG MS20ic was KORG's first mini MS20 controller for their Legacy software sweet that including a model of the MS20. It also worked with the iPad/iOS version. Someone sent the following to an email list I'm on. Curious what else might be coming for it, and why? It's interesting that KORG would be putting resources on this.

(For those who don't know what I'm talking about, it's the old Korg controller that looks like a miniature and cute MS20.)

I emailed Korg support to ask why the LED lights for the Env and Gate etc only work on the iMS20 version, not the VST or standalone app (which is really just a VST host, anyway). This has been an issue on the MS20ic for a long time.

Korg Support USA wrote back:

"We are currently looking into this issue of the EG LED not lighting up and will try to resolve it in the next update."

I am very excited. There is a lot of charm in those flashing little red LED.

Keep your fingers crossed, fellow Korg Legacy users!

Artist DIY: Vicky Clarke

FACTmagazine

"Artist DIY is a series of videos made by artists in collaboration with FACT in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

FACT edits each episode remotely, while the artist shoots at their home or studio with whatever equipment they have available. In this episode, Manchester sound artist Vicky Clarke talks us through some of the DIY instruments and techniques she uses to make music.

Prior to the pandemic, Clarke worked on a project called Materiality, in which she combines physical materials and digital processes to build sound sculptures, and a collaborative project, Noise Orchestra. More recently Clarke has built an interface for Ableton Live using a revolutionary material called graphene, which she demonstrates in this episode.

Whilst in lockdown, Clarke has taken inspiration from a recent project in Russia focusing on machine learning to develop SleepStates, a browser-based artwork exploring feelings of online perpetuity and the sleep-like limbo of quarantine.

Clarke is part of Manchester’s music, art and technology scene, working to help communities and young people. She works with emerging musicians charity Brighter Sound and is part of local audiovisual community Test Card.

Clarke is also a creative associate at Future Everything, an organistion that has been exploring the intersection of technology, art and culture since 1995. She’s currently working on her first release – follow her on Twitter and Instagram for updates.

"The Tremolo effect and the “repeat” switch are not working. Also, from time to time (but not very often) it goes a semi-tone out of tune for about a second.

I guess it could be fixed by replacing the right capacitors.

All the rest is working perfectly. All the switch and knobs were cleaned and lubricated.

The wooden veneers were in poor condition, so a sticky wood-like veneer was added.

This was bought for a university project only, I don’t need it anymore so it’s just taking space. These are quite expensive even with defects (like mine)."

This might be the most expensive Juno you've ever seen, but I can guarantee it's also the cleanest. This is one for the collectors."

Cereal Instruments - 'mesh' (EXPLANATION & DEMO)

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

"(TO SKIP PAST EXPLANATION STRAIGHT TO DEMO: 1:27 )
'Mesh' is allows you to passively, mix, mult and attenuate in a small 8hp size.

Available soon on our reverb shop. [find their modules here]

NOTES:
Note 1 - 'mesh' is fully passive. Whilst this means that the mults are not suitable for pitch or sometimes triggers (where a buffered mult is needed), it means that it doesn't take up a power slot, it's skiff friendly, and a very low cost and easy DIY build at just 24 componants.
Note 2 - 'mesh' is suitable for both audio and cv signals.
Note 3 - What colour should production model knobs be? Answer in the comments below."

via Reverb

"Multi Utility Passive Eurorack Routing Solution

'Mesh' allows you to passively, mix, mult and attenuate in a small 8hp size.

At its core, 'mesh' is 6 attenuators. However, each row's set of 3 inputs are normalled together so that it can act as an attenuatable passive mult.
Also, each column has it's top output normalled to the bottom, allowing you to mix the top and bottom rows when nothing is plugged into the top.

This means 'mesh' can be, for example:

6 attenuators // two attenuated three-way mults (that can be mixed or separate) // one three-way mult and three attenuators // two dual input mixers and two attenuators

*to name a few :) *

Additionally, 'mesh' is fully passive. Whilst this means that the mults are not suitable for pitch (where a buffered mult is needed), it means that it doesn't take up a power slot, it's skiff friendly and makes for a great quick or beginner DIY build.

-As it is passive, it is recommended that 'mesh' is only used with professionally produced modules. We cannot be held responsible for any damage to products."

Also available as a DIY kit.

Cereal Instruments THUMP // Vactrol Based LPG & VCA with distortion (Eurorack module)

Note this is the first Cereal Instruments post on the site.

"'thump' is a versatile vactrol LPG & VCA with distortion. 'Thump' allows you to send two signals through a gritty vactrol amp with low pass gate modes & plenty of gain pre & post distortion."

It's also available as a DIY kit. The following is the build video:

And an overview by DivKid:

DivKidVideo

"Here’s the new THUMP Eurorack module from Cereal Instruments. It’s a 6HP Vactrol based LPG / VCA with added distortion and character. A rotary switch let’s you select VCA mode and 3 increasingly steep filtering options. There’s two inputs with a crossfader, CV input for the gate level and a make up gain control. It distorts and adds a quirky character easily but backing off amp CV and gain lets you clean things up.

SWTP Psych Tone vintage synthesizer composing machine 1972

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
OFR

"This is a cool box. The Psych-Tone were a featured article in Popular Electronics, and offered as a kit from SouthWest Technical Products. This has tempo, pitch, volume controls. Plus a lot of other knobs and switches to reprogram the system. Attack Decay Sustain sort of work, but it's more oriented toward musical note improvisation than synthesis. There are many switches and knobs for pattern control, etc. I believe the manual/article is still online.

I added reverb to the sound of the box."

Note, it's actually SWTPC. You can see the small c in previous posts here. I thought this might be an auction demo, but I only found the listing below of another one. If this one does go up and I see it, I'll post it.

An intersting side not is there were a ton of other SWTPC products. SWTPC stood for Southwest Technical Products Corporation. You can find some info on them on Wikipedia.

via this auction

"For your consideration is the extremely rare SWTP Psych-Tone Composer-Synthesizer. The unit seems to work fine, though the output on the internal speaker is very low. The external output works fine.

Please see our other listings. All proceeds from sales here go to keep the Vintage Synthesizer Museum open during this time of social distancing.
Thanks. Keep safe and healthy.

The Psych Tone was an early electronic music algorithmic composer and synthesizer presented in the February 1971 issue of Popular Electronics Magazine. It uses a 6-bit , to produce a repeating pseudo-random sequence up to 63 notes long. Three taps are made off the shift register, those are weighted, and summed to drive a Voltage-Controlled Oscillator to produce a pitch. Then an envelope is applied.

The Psych Tone is incredibly rare. It was a complex project, not many people built them, and it is difficult to find a working unit today. And that's a shame, because this was a remarkable device and we can learn much from it. So I recreated the Psych Tone in software, from the schematics, so it can be appreciated."
