LXR-02 tutorial - Part 8: Euclidean triggers

"Part eight of a guide for the Erica Synths LXR-02 drum machine. This is with firmware 1.2. In some ways this is less of a tutorial and more of a fun exploration with the LXR-02 paired with a DB-01 Bassline and then a Vermona PerFourMer MkII with a Zen delay. The Euclidean triigers come from the LXR-02's pattern generator. In the first example one channel is dedicated to running the DB-01. The interesting sude effect of the triggering is that it adds sustain to the DB-01 sound. This means switching it on and off gives a very different quality to the sound. In the second example four channels of the LXR-02 trigger four different sounds on the Vermona PerFourMer. The fun comes from switching between channels on the LXR-02 to create rythmic variations. The Zen delay gives some extra complexity and dirt on top.

The Expanding Sound PolyMono pack is built using the MonoPoly synthesizer.... clever name, right? Something that was instantly noticeable to me was the larger than life quality some patches achieve here in Ableton. Since you are using four oscillators in unison mode, sampled instruments can use more voices, and have the ability to sound huge. Each instrument is a polysynth, so you're hearing up to 40 Oscillators at once! Giant atmosphere pads and strong present leads are available, as well as bass presets that really cut into a mix. This pack contains 22 multi sampled presets using over 100 samples. I hope you enjoy! I feel like some of these sounds are going to find their way into my compositions very soon."

"A chiptune track of mine I played at clownfest 5.

I had made this pattern some years ago and I eventually made it to a full track which I played on my CF5 set. It is made entirely of commodore 64 samples and single cycle waveforms.

I had since remade this on the M8 but using it's synth engines and it's good but I prefer the c64 samples used here.

I'll be doing another set for CF7 this December

Prophet X Showcase with Nicholas Semrad: Double X

"Our friend Nicholas Semrad composed a few short pieces using only the Prophet X:

'Double X' uses both the 1985 Passionate ‘Muted’ and ‘Main’ Pianos mixed together, along with the ‘Acoustic Long’ guitar sample - creating a patch that could loop in a beautiful way, but also be "playable" via the sliders, wheels, and aftertouch. Using aftertouch to decimate it, and the mod wheel to fully-wet the mix of the reverb effect, slider one changes the size of the loop for a longer, more drawn out loop, and slider two raises the gain of the distortion effect.

'The guitar sound aims for the Bibio-esque rootsy lo-fi guitar sound. I stacked two of the exact same ‘Acoustic Long’ guitar sounds together (with a high pass filter effect on both) so that I could get extra effects. One stack has a distortion to warm up the sound a bit, and the other has a little bit of reverb.'

"I've been watching videos on this beauty of a synthesizer for some months and finally decided to pull the trigger on buying it.

The clip is the result of the first night of fiddling with a simple arpeggio. Barely scratched the surface of it's capabilities, but I can say I'm already in love with the mod matrix and LFO capabilities. The interface to me feels very natural. Didn't even look at the manual yet (but I should!). Looking forward to exploring this beast further!

Recorded in Ableton Live 10. Besides some compression and limiting, no effects were added in Ableton. Drums come from the Moog DFAM."

small drums improvisation but of course this is incredible machine for programming up to 128 step .

First of all: although it's digital, the DR-2 is not about sampling. It's a drum synthesizer, like a classic analog drum machine, but it uses digital sound synthesis algorithms instead of analog circuitry. There are no samples in the DR-2, and there's no sample memory.

Just like the Modor NF-1, the DR-2 is not build to recreate the classics of the past. The DR-2 uses digital sound synthesis to innovate drum sounds and rhythms. Many sounds will be recognizable. It is possible to make classic sounding bass drums, snares and rimshots. It's not difficult to program classic floorfillers with the DR-2. But with 12 synthesis parameters per drum, you'll easily find yourself creating your own individual sound."

"Ho-Ho-Ho! This is Synthmas '21, the virtual calendar presenting a Christmas carol played by synthesizers - every day from 1st to 24th of December.

The song:
Together with the melody presumably originating from an traditional german folk song, the carol was published first in 1862. The text relates to the "Christkind" - a German Christmas variant of Baby Jesus often characterized as a girl - wishes to let into the homes bringing gifts in return.

The gear:
Bell-like sounds always have been somewhat problematic to generate by subtractive synthesis as most analog synthesizers utilize. FM, LA and wavetable synthesis do a much better job. So the three tracks of this song are played by the Yamaha MODX (acting as a DX-Synthesizer), Waldorf Blofeld for wavetable sound and Roland JV-1010 to add LA-synthesis.
