GSi Drum-80 - 80s Drum Emulator

video upload by Genuine Soundware

"GSi Drum-80 is the new plugin from GSi that recreates the typical drum setup of th eearly 80's where an electronic drum set was used along with acoustic cymbals."

https://www.genuinesoundware.com/

"We all know and use electronic drums today, but at the beginning of the 80's the first electronic drums were a real novelty that revolutionized not only the sound of music of those years, but also the workflow in the recording studio. Many producers preferred to record the sound of electronic drums rather than acoustic drums because it saved time and money, avoiding having to mount microphones, find the right positions, spend hours equalizing and correcting the recorded material. With an electronic drum set it was quicker: it was enough to connect the cables and maybe find the right sound for the song, which was a perfect scenario especially for many low-cost productions, for example those of pop music.

The first electronic drums were completely analog, they generated the sounds of the drums using only a few elements such as an oscillator and a white noise generator, plus a couple of envelopes and a filter. The sound wasn't exactly realistic but it was peculiar, and perfect for creating certain sounds never heard before.

The downside was that electronic drums could only generate the sound of drums but not cymbals. For this reason, the sound of real cymbals was recorded alongside the sound of electronic drums. This kind of setup was also used live quite often. It was common to see a drummer on stage playing the typical hexagonal pads but combined with a set of real cymbals.

GSi Drum-80 reproduces that exact scenario. It contains two separate sound engines that can play at the same time. One engine recreates the sounds of the famous electronic drum module known as the Simmons SDS-V (very similar to the later SDS-8 model); at the same time, the exclusive GSi WLF Engine plays a multi-sample of real cymbals recorded exclusively for Drum-80.

Hypnotic jam with Arturia MiniFreak, Dreadbox Erebus, Mystic Circuits IDUM, and other eurorack drums

video upload by Jay Hosking

"Please support my work on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/jayhosking
A live, semi-improvised synth jam performed entirely on hardware.

I had the MiniFreak and Erebus set up for an exploratory livestream on my Patreon, and totally stumbled across this combination of MiniFreak drone and Erebus bass with fifths. I'd also been tinkering with modifications to my eurorack drum setup, so I decided to quickly integrate the two together and capture something loose and fun. This came together extremely fast and I love how easy it was to get into the flow.

The MiniFreak and new Erebus are both brand new to me, and early impressions with both have extremely positive. I try a lot of gear and expect that I won't connect with much of it, so I was pleasantly surprised when I found myself saying, "Oh, yeah, this is great" for both of them.

The MiniFreak shines in its oscillators (especially those from Noise Engineering!) and its robust effects section, with three effects slots and far better sound than most integrated effects on big fancy flagship synths. There are so many bread and butter sounds the MiniFreak can give you, but it can also give you some wonderfully weird and warbly unique sounds that I haven't been able to get from a hardware synth.

The Erebus is exactly what I want in a desktop mono synth: small profile, huge sound, what-you-see-is-what-you-get settings, flexibility in sound design, great bass, and fun to explore. This one seems like a no-brainer if you're on the market for a desktop mono synth for a hardware setup, especially if you need something to contrast against Moog monos. Thanks so much to Michael for building this Erebus for me! (They have/had both DIY and pre-built kits.)

And then there's my eurorack drum machine, which continues to be my favourite way to add drums to a track. Two recent additions include the Mystic Circuits IDUM (to add a lot of hectic variety to the drum sequence) and the WMD Fracture (which is my new favourite clap/perc module). Really liking where this drum machine is going, though I'm going to try at least one more configuration.

All in all, this one really captured a moment in time and was a blast to explore. I may leave this setup on the table for a little more exploration.

Thanks for listening.

Arturia MiniFreak - Drone pad
Dreadbox Erebus with Source Audio Ventris - bass
Eurorack drums:

YAMAHA SY77 - Synth Demo | Sounds, Patches & Presets

video upload by synth4ever

"Yamaha SY77 FM and AWM synthesizer demo featuring various, sounds patches and presets. The SY77 was a flagship Yamaha FM & AWM2 synth released in 1989. In this Yamaha SY77 synth demo I showcase pads, plucks, ambient soundscapes, strings, motion loops and more.

The Yamaha SY77 has 32-voices of polyphony (16 FM, 16 AWM) and features 6-operator AFM synthesis. This provides 45 algorithms, 3 feedback loops and 16 waveforms, and 16-bit AWM2 sample ROM waveforms which can all be used in various ways to craft layered and complex sounds.

The Yamaha SY77 also has multi-stage Time Variant Filters (lowpass, highpass, multi-pole) with resonance, LFO (sine, saw, triangle and sample & hold), 16-track sequencer (16K note capacity), 61 drum sounds, 16-part multi-timbrality, 4 independent digital effects (2 reverb units w/ 40 effect types & 2 modulation units), as well as a 61-key velocity sensitive keyboard with aftertouch. The SY77 can store up to 128 preset & 64 user patches, 16 preset & 16 user multi-patches. There is also a rack-mount version released in 1990, the Yamaha TG77.

The Yamaha SY77 brings the best of 6-operator FM synthesis and blends it with AWM2 samples to provide new sound design possibilities beyond traditional FM. The combination of these two methods was marketed as Realtime Convolution and Modulation Synthesis (RCM) and enables sounds not possible on a DX7 or DX7 II.

Some advantages of the SY77 include: 5 additional waves besides the standard sine; 45 algorithms (vs 32 on DX7); flexible routing of up to three feedback sources within any algorithm, ability to design custom-routed algorithm via MIDI; routing of FM signal through a configurable filter; and of course layering and manipulation of AWM2 PCM samples with the FM synthesis.

The Yamaha SY77 is still an exceptionally powerful FM synthesizer and can be found for good prices on the 2nd hand market. Build quality is also quite substantial. If you have the opportunity to acquire one and want to go beyond traditional FM and DX7 sounds, the Yamaha SY77, TG77, or even the SY99 are great options. Hope you enjoy this Yamaha SY77 synth demo."

Waldorf M - 21 Custom Patches - No Talking

"Get the Patches by joining my Patreon (2nd Tier) - https://www.patreon.com/GEOSynths

I only had the Waldorf M for a short time, as it was sent to me by the Distributor to try out and do a Review, so sadly I didn’t have the time to do a “Full Bank”, however as part of the “getting to know” the Waldorf M, I created 20 Patches, plus another that I made in my Review Video.

As well as the Patches, I made FX Presets for each using 2 Plug-Ins which are free and all you do is insert the Chorus first, then the Delay/Reverb in the next insert. All the levels are done.
