"Free update adds #1 most requested sound from Keyscape users

To celebrate International Piano Day (the 88th day of the year), we are thrilled to announce the release of a special new Double Felt Grand piano for Keyscape® — available now to users as a Free Update. This v1.5 release represents the first time that we have added a brand new instrument to Keyscape - and the “felt piano” has been the #1 most requested sound from Keyscape users.

Creating the Double Felt
Normally, the highly coveted 'felt piano' sound is achieved by draping a layer of felt vertically between the strings and the hammers of an upright piano. This softens the strikes and gives the upright piano an intimate, muted tone. Because of gravity, this technique is not feasible on a grand piano, since the hammers and strings are situated horizontally. The felt would simply lay on top of the hammers, preventing them from rising up to strike the strings. Attempts to attach the felt above the hammers, against the strings, yields less-than-satisfactory results and laying the felt on top of the strings mutes their sustain drastically.

Through careful experimentation, renowned piano technician Jim Wilson (creator of the unique Yamaha grand used in Keyscape for the LA Custom C7), discovered how to achieve this gorgeous muted sound on a world-class 7-foot grand piano. After a great deal of thought and experimentation, Jim ended up carefully cutting, fitting, and gluing two individually layered strips of a thick, natural felt to each hammer.

Sound/Software Development
Once the acoustic piano was prepared in this special way, our acclaimed Spectrasonics sound development team (led by producer Eric Persing) then painstakingly sampled the instrument at our newly developed private recording studio — which features some of the largest naturally ambient recording spaces in Los Angeles. To complete the experience, our amazing software team developed lush new DSP reverb algorithms that are exclusive to this new Keyscape sound. The final result is the unique Double Felt Grand: a warm, soft piano with the best aspects of a felt upright, but with the body and the decay of a grand.

New Keyscape Video
To celebrate Piano Day and the release of the new Double Felt Grand, we’ve also produced a new Keyscape video featuring a beautiful performance on the new sound by Sony Classical artist Olivia Belli."

Driving at night in the Pacific Northwest | Synth Wave & Psychogeography

video upload by Mamotreco

"Music for driving around late at night in the Pacific Northwest. Merging lanes through saturated tail light reds as the bright headlight halos pass you by. This is what this synth music and accompanying video is all about. This track 'Cybersyn - Centre Autoroutier' is part of an album called Intrigues Telematiques which is all about the melancholy feelings of forgotten technologies. Centre Autoroutier is French for a fancy rest stop. Rest stops in France were generally well maintained into the 90s and early 00s and featured functional but stylish architecture, well-appointed amenities, and even in modern sculpture works ... a sort of Eurotruck geographical vaporwave of late 20th Century nonplaces. This video however was shot in the Pacific Northwest which gives this track a different hauntological connotation due to the psycho-geography of that region of the United States.

Facehugger Glide function

"Demonstration of the Glide, or Portamento, function. This feature is still incomplete: the linear portamento needs more capacitance than the logarithmic portamento for matching performance, and I haven't had a chance to implement that on the breadboard yet.
Facehugger project is live on Kickstarter until Saturday, April 22, 2023!"

A quick introduction to OVUM, a new synthesizer from Crows Electromusic

"March 28, 2023 - Crows Electromusic, a new synth company from Vancouver, Canada, is thrilled to introduce OVUM, a standalone all-analog tool for exploratory sound synthesis. With individual controls for each function, OVUM gives direct control of five independent triangle-core oscillators. The instrument’s unique un-quantized interface is perfect for exploring pure tones, drones, and microtonal sound textures.

• 100% analog circuitry
• Five voices
• Triangle and square wave triangle-core oscillators
• One-control-per-function interface
• Unique control system
• Fully standalone, just add headphones
• Wood and aluminium enclosure
• USB powered
• Made in Canada

During development of OVUM we’ve had the pleasure of handing the instrument to people who’ve never touched a synth in their life - and then watch their eyes light up as they discover how easy it is to make strange and beautiful sounds when they’re unconstrained by conventional time signatures and musical scales. We think people of all ages, musical abilities, and experience levels are going to love this instrument.

OVUM is available now for $129 USD.

Crows Electromusic is a new synth company based in Vancouver, Canada. Started by Cory Alder in 2022. Crows’ goal is to develop new hardware instruments that challenge the established ways we interact with sound and music creation. Our first product, OVUM, is available for purchase now, and orders will ship starting April 15th.

For more information, please visit OVUM's website at or follow us on social media (Instagram, TikTok) at @crowselectromusic."

Making a Wavestate Patch

video upload by boxoftextures

"This is all my drummer buddy's fault! LOL

Doc acquired a Wavestate, and I've always loved the original Wavestation. I even have one, but it's one of my several synthesizers that need a new display backlight, alas. But Korg came out with the Wavestate a few years ago, and they also have a software version. So I was "forced" to pick it up so I could make patches to send westward. And honestly it's amazing, capable of incredible changing textures, among many other things, of course. You can have a sequence of up to 64 samples per layer, and have them either crossfade into each other or sound discretely, and you can separately have up to 64 notes with each keypress, or just have it play the one(s) you're physically playing on the keyboard. That's per layer, and there's four of them, with a handy programmable joystick to let you fade the different layers in and out. Incredibly powerful. I have the software version, but now I'm seriously considering getting the hardware version as well.

In this video I'm making a new patch from scratch, and then I show a number of other patches I've made over the past few weeks.

Suzuki Omnichord to Make a Comeback in the Fall

via Suzuki

"The Omnichord will be re-produced to commemorate the 70th anniversary of our company.

In the 1980s, the electronic musical instrument 'Omnichord' gained tremendous popularity among gadget-loving music lovers for its quirky look and tone. We have been receiving requests to resurrect the Omnichord for a long time. And this year, 2023, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the founding of Suzuki Musical Instruments Manufacturing, we will reproduce the Omnichord! It is scheduled to be released around the fall of 2023. We will update the information on this page from time to time. *The photo is the old model OM-27.

It was developed as an electronic musical instrument with an automatic accompaniment function (auto bass chord) equipped with a harp sensor. Anyone can easily play chords, including those who are new to musical instruments and those who are less adept with traditional instruments. It is played using multiple chord buttons lined up in the centre and a touch sensitive strum plate on the right. Whilst pressing the chord buttons, tap the plate with your finger or slide up and down to play 4 octave sounds to effectively accompany a song. Not only is it easy to play, but its unique appearance and tone makes it a hidden favorite both in Japan and overseas for artists who want to try something different and for non-musicians who want to play music!

Originally development started with a request from an overseas sales company to make an electronic musical instrument like an auto-harp. It started with the electronic musical instrument 'PC-27' and the first Omnichord 'OM-27' was born with improvements to the interface and functions. Since then, as technology has advanced, we have created numerous models through trial and error in adding more chords, timbres, and designs."

"Scheduled to be released in the fall of 2023!"

You can find additional details on Suzuki's Omnichord page here.
