The M.E.M.S Project at Buchla & Friends

video upload by Logan Mannstrane

"January 27th, 2024

As an avid enthusiast of Buchla format modules, I couldn’t resist attending the Buchla & Friends event in downtown Los Angeles. Armed with my camera, I set out to capture the essence of such a unique gathering. I documented the event and later layered my footage with performances on an array of Buchla format setups, featuring gear from Buchla, Keen Association, 1979.ws, Studio.H, Roman/Verbos clones and Buchla re-issues to create an electrifying soundtrack.

The highlight of the event was the M.E.M.S talk by Chip Flynn and Mark Milanovich, which delved into the legacy of Don Buchla. Their dedication to recreating the original designs is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Although I didn’t have the opportunity to record with the M.E.M.S modules myself, their live sound was phenomenal. I hope this HDR video provides a vivid glimpse into their meticulous craftsmanship.

Black Corporation Deckard's Dream soundscape - Where electric dreams escape imagination

video upload by MIDERA

"The Black Corporation Deckard's Dream. Sometimes, you may hear something cut in and out. That is MIX I, which, for whatever reason (one that evades me) I cannot figure out the source of this issue. I think it happens twice, so my apologies for that.

This was really the first time I played with this. You should understand that this is not really a simple synthesizer to figure out. I know it is based on the CS-80, but whoever designed that had some interesting ideas about how to name and how to make sliders function (sometimes down is up?). I don't know how to feel about that.

The sound from this thing is quite interesting - but I'll let you judge for yourself on what you think of it.

Sisters 👩‍❤️‍👩 (Vermona Perfourmer Mk2 + H9 // DRM-1 Mk4 + Bigsky + Lethargy // Arturia Keystep Pro)

video upload by 2-Minute Warning

"As I've been posting a couple of Youtube Shorts lately, I made this "very long" video this time (the longest one on the channel, other than the "Going live at home video" https://youtu.be/qgIxJwxzqlA 😊).

For this one, I used 2 analog instruments (Perfourmer Mk2 and DRM-1 Mk4) sequenced by the Keystep Pro (KSP) https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list....
I made heavy use of a lot of cool features of the KSP like: polymeter, randomness, step skip, looper, transposing within scale, scenes, individual drum mutes, quick toggle between 2 drum patterns (this one is a bit of a trick of mine) 🤩

So the track starts with the KSP's Track 4 sequencing voices 3 & 4 of the Perfourmer (going through the H9 using its tape delay effect, where you can clearly hear the nostalgic "wow & flutter").

I then unmute the KICK and SNARE (played by the DRM-1) abd BASS (played by the Perfourmer, but going out DRY by its seperate audio output).

The other tracks are then unmuted and I start to transpose live the played sequences (you know I love this feature, right?).

Further on I use the KSP's "Scene" feature to load different patterns for the "chorus" part.
You can hear me playing with some parameters of the DRM-1's CLAP sound, which is going through the Dreadbox Lethargy analog phaser (using the DRM-1's handy insert jack!).
I also trigger manually a couple of times the MULTI voice of the DRM-1 (which is going through the Bigsky reverb), for the build etc.

The track then heads to a more "experimental" outro part consisting of 5 step patterns (where I shifted the analog phaser from the CLAP insert jack to the HIHAT2 insert jack).

* Hardware used *

// BASS:
- Vermona Perfourmer Mk2 Voice 1

// SYNTHS:
- Vermona Perfourmer Mk2 Voice 2, Voices 3&4 + Eventide H9 Max (tape delay) + Pill (ducking pedal, triggered by the KICK from DRM-1)

// DRUMS:
- Vermona DRM-1 Mk4 (8-voice analog drum synth) with Strymon Bigsky reverb (on the MULTI's output) and Dreadbox Lethargy analog phaser (on the CLAP's output in insert mode, then HIHAT2)

// SEQUENCER:
- Arturia Keystep Pro"

Processed Mellotron M4000D May 31st 2024

video upload by John L Rice

"A quick and dirty Mellotron noodle. I currently can’t stand for long (foot issue) so I took some experimental noodling audio and some rough snapshots of the gear used and edited it all into a video FWIW.

So it's the Mellotron M4000D Rack was processed through a Club Of The Knobs fixed filter bank and channel enhancer with 6 outputs of the channel enhancer mixed by Modcan and Moon mixers and returned to the main Allen and Heath mixer for some additional EQ and effects processing from Strymon pedals Mobius, DECO, and BigSky, plus a touch of reverb from the Lexicon MX400."

Bring Back Vactrols! | Eugene F. Vactrolman was right

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"I am sure you haven't heard of Eugene F. Vactrolman because he's completely ignored and silenced. But his demands are clear. Vactrols must return because the future of the Buchla Bongo depends on it. I don't have an opinion, but I do agree the world needs a few more alternatives.

In this video I'll do a triple blind test with the DXG and the LXD.
For science. So I recorded six videos in the dark and edited on instinct.
Then I realized a blind test doesn't work for audio. Regardless, I think you can spot the vactrols with your eyes closed. Eugene F. is right. We need to bring back vactrols. But we can't. Period.

Sure, the DXG is nice, but it doesn't 'bonggg' like a real vactrol, it's more like a 'blip'. The DXG is acceptable as a vegan EU compliant alternative and it helps to save the world. Still, the mysterious Natural Gate proves the world can be saved AND ensure a bright future of the Buchla LPG. Personally, I think it's better than any vactrol LPG, so there's a reason why it's so hard to get.

There's probably a patent protecting the tech, otherwise it would be all over the place.

Even though DXG is a bit 'inferior' to its vintage optical predecessors, it's stereo and offers six audio inputs shared between two dynamic gates. It's an amazing module on its own. Maybe it deserves to be accepted as it is. But not today. Today we're going to honor Eugene, listen to his demands, firmly agree, and then forget about him."

1st pic via Amazon, the rest via Discogs. According to Discogs:

"Ammar al-Sherei (1948 - 2012) was an Egyptian composer. He had his own studio in Cairo known as Ammar Sound Studios.

He was the founder and leader of the Egyptian group الأصدقاء (al-Aṣdiqā') in the 1980s."

And accorcing to Amazon:

"Sought-after cult classic instrumental LP by legendary Egyptian musician Omar El Shariyi (aka Ammar El Sherei), first released on Soutelphan in 1976, is reissued by Wewantsounds on vinyl for the first time ever.

Here, the iconic Egyptian musician and composer masterfully interprets six classic compositions by another Egyptian legend, Mohamed Abdel Wahab, in his own hypnotic way. Including "Ana Wehabieby" (aka Ana Wa Habibi), "Ya Wabour Koly" and the "Ahwak" made famous by such talents as Abdel Halim Hafez or Fairuz. Using early electronic keyboards like the Steelphon S900 or the Farfisa as seen on the album cover, El Sherei creates beautifully hypnotic instrumentals that blend together traditional melodies with modern instrumentation, adding jazz and pop elements in the mix.

Achieving cult status over the years with Arabic music collectors and vinyl diggers, 'Oriental Music' is now a sought-after album which command high prices on the international scene.

This re-issue series of Arabic music is curated by Lebanese-born Arabic music expert Mario Choueiry (Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris). As always this has been newly remastered and comes in original artwork."

Modor DR-2 tutorial Part 2: Special functions

video upload by Richard DeHove

"Part 2 in the guide to the Modor DR-2 drum machine. Here I cover a lot of the extra functions and front panel buttons. Again this isn't a sound design tutorial, just a guide to functionality.

At almost 30 minutes long I thought I should leave things there rather than trying to cover all the remaining functions since a lot of these rely on shortcuts. How many shortcuts can you assimilate in 30 minutes?

So Part 3 will cover the remaining features and after that the really fun stuff of sound design.

Finally, if you're listening through headphones and hear some high pitched noise, that's my mic picking up some RF noise which I've since, thankfully, solved. The DR-2 is dead quiet and clean.

Yamaha CS-30L analog synthesizer + legs + lid + owner's manual

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this listing

"It's a complete package with the lid, legs and owner's manual in English. The "L" version has a sturdy tolexed wooden case, the black legs, a brilliance controller next to the keyboard, and a LED for every of the three envelope generators. I'd say it's the synth players edition, perfect for live settings. The synth has been completely overhauled by a pro tech and the service report is part of the sale as a proof of what's been done exactly.

Cosmetically it's a nice example with minor signs of use. There are some small scratches at the front panel. The right side panel is missing a small piece and someone covered that with a sticker. The left side panel has some minor wear and tear as well as the black legs. The metal parts mounted at the tolex have signs of use as well."
