Interpreting the Synthesizer: Meaning Through Sonics - Edited by Nick Wilson
via Cambridge Scholars Publishing
"This volume examines the synthesizer’s significance for music and culture, with a range of contributors providing historical, musicological, practical and theoretical perspectives.
The synthesizer as an instrument has evolved rapidly over the last 50 years, conveying different meanings in musical culture at various times in its history. For example, post-punk and new wave acts used synths to signify their embrace of futurism and modernity. Earlier psychedelic bands used the instrument to sonically represent mind expansion while prog acts signposted their lineage to the classical avant-garde. Techno artists used synths to escape the strictures of acoustic music in parallel with rave culture’s desire for escapism from the mundanity of daily existence. It is now seemingly ubiquitous in modern pop music production."
The essays were originally presented at a 'Synthposium' conference Nick Wilson ran in Melbourne, Australia. You can find more info on the conference at https://synthposium.net/.

Clan Analogue Accepting Contributions for Upcoming FM Synthesis Compilation Album
This one is in via supporting member Nick Wilson.
Deatils via Clan Analogue:
"Clan Analogue are seeking tracks for their new compilation album, a celebration of FM synthesis.
Just over 40 years ago, in 1983, Yamaha released the DX7 synthesizer and inaugurated a new age of digital FM synthesis. To celebrate the rich history of this innovation in sound creation, Clan Analogue are looking for new explorations of FM synthesis for their next compilation album. FM synthesis takes many forms. Whether you use a classic Yamaha DX7 or its Dexed emulation, Operator in Ableton Live or Native Instruments’ FM8, FM-patched modular rigs or analogue synths with FM functionality, your contributions are welcome.
FM synthesis was the sound of funky basslines and keyboard riffs in many 80s pop hits but was also heard in the hypnotic ambience of Brian Eno and experimental compositions by FM guru John Chowning. Whatever your inspiration, we invite you to move beyond the preset to explore sounds of the future, the past or a sideways alternative reality.
Submissions are being accepted up until the 31st of July."
See Clan Analogue for additional details on how to enter.

DSI Prophet 08 soundscape - Move into the vacancy of tomorrow
video upload by MIDERA
"Well - As much as I loved the Prophet 08, I have sold it. I was planning to buy the Sequentix Cirklon and sold a bunch of stuff (however, no one from Sequentix or Rubadub, who sells it to folks in the US, will reply to my messages, and I find that a really tough pill to swallow to spend $2800 and have no replies - so I'm not sure I will buy one).
Anyway, I find it fascinating that I didn't like the Prophet 10 at first, but now I love it. I loved the Prophet 08 at first, but now... I decided to sell it. Like - I think it was great and all, but I feel like the P10 has it beat, just always so majestic. So... it doesn't really seem to fit in my studio anymore.

Finding that perfect sample loop point | Prophet X Tutorial
video upload by Espen Kraft
"The challenge is as old as samplers. Finding that perfect loop point was often impossible. You could get close, but rarely perfect. Some samplers made the task easier than others.
Today I often use a program called SampleRobot to help make sample libraries for the Prophet X. That works very well for recording fresh, but if I have a sound from before, just ONE sample, and I want to stretch that out over the entire keyboard, I have to use the inbuilt sample loop functionality in the Prophet X itself, just as we had to do back in the day with the sampler we had at hand.
The challenge now is to find that perfect, or nearly perfect loop point. How do we do it?
When you stretch out a sample over the entire keyboard, the sample engine will have to stretch that sound out, altering the frequency of the sample itself. It will make higher pitched sounds end faster, while lower pitched sounds last longer. That will drastically change the timbre of the sound and many prefer that sound to a hi-fi multi sampled version of the same patch. It's all a matter of taste. The sound of a sample stretched takes us back to the 80s. Artifacts and aliasing etc. Many associate that sound with something nice and cosy.

Source Audio Artifakt [FX w/ Synthesizers #18] No Talk Audio Demo
video upload by gstormelectro
"Audio + Video by G-Storm Electro c. 2024
Artifakt by Source Audio. Lo-fi, low grade reverb, bit-reduction, tape hissy, AM Radio goodess. Today I'm running some synths and electro gear through the Artifakt pedal, see what modes I've been vibing with. Pedal was edited all manually - on computer. No presets were used - So you'll see a pic of pedal starting point settings w/ each audition. Dry audio preceeds FX auditions...well usually. Recorded direct to Tascam DR-05, no other effects or mastering beyond routine normalization.

"Die antwoord apparat
Means in Dutch answering machine
this machine is based on an old chip that can’t record sounds in a kind of Lofi beautiful quality .
The sound is more higher and warmer. You can control the speed of the sound and the spots.
With the control voltage. For example, your record your voice.
Or the sound of a piano. The sound of music box.
Or kalimba You can record live in the building in microphone
of course there is also a jack input of recording have influence on the time
how long you can record and on the quality of the sound we recommended to
put it in before your recording and looking for sweet spots .
Make sure if you’re recording you put all the switches down.
(R) mode to be sure . You can also use this device as a filter.
if you’re using the double switches
up and you’re using the input for an oscillator or something else they’re gonna be some demonstrations videos

How To Care For Your Pet Minimoog
video upload by foleytronics fx repair
"This could be your 1974 Mini, completely done up by us. It has a new walnut case, NOS Pratt Read keyboard, new knobs, plus a full recap and calibration. This unit has the coveted old oscillator board, which we lightly modified to improve tuning stability between octaves. This is my favorite Minimoog I’ve ever played, but it is sadly FOR SALE as you apparently cannot pay your mortgage with them or feed them to your children. If interested, drop us a line: peter@foleytronics.com
The Carousel is Tom’s, we modified it to have individual outputs for each instrument. It pairs nicely with Chris’s other AMS 15-80s. Yes, the Carousel is normally quite noisy.
Shot and edited by Michael Shular"

It's a Rungle outthere | Cybernetics EP02 | From Benjolin to Blippoo Box
video upload by Cinematic Laboratory
"The Benjolin is a powerful module. For many, it's a chaotic noise source, which was exactly the point of the design. The Blippoo Box is less chaotic, more musical and designed as an experimental instrument. It's more a Pandora's Box. Both have the Rungler in common. It refers to a shift register circuit, but also to the 5U module that includes two VCO's and is not unlike the Benjolin's chaotic core. I do not own a Blippoo Box for obvious reasons (it's now priceless) but I do love my Benjolin. It's going to be a noisy video where I'll try the Rungler concept on Marbles and XAOC Leibniz.
Marbles is a cool extension to the Benjolin, and the Benjolin can also be a great conventional complex VCO.
Rob Hordijk designed the Rungler module (and circuit) to cover the space between a fundamental sinewave and the total chaos of white noise. A creative source of designer noise to enrich your patch. And wow, what a designer he was."
