Kawai SX-240 soundscape IV - Grey skies of summer's end

video upload by MIDERA

"The grey skies in mid August, with the cacophony of crickets in the morning... I really enjoy that. Even though it kind of represents the beginning of the end of summer. I love those days with the light mist.

On Monday, my second child turns 3. We will be having a Tea Party tomorrow to celebrate. When we celebrated our first child's 3rd birthday, it was during Covid and we just brought out a bunch of stuffed animals to be her friends for the party.

Sometimes I wish time would stand still so I could really enjoy my kids as they are... but then I also know I couldn't watch them grow up (or experience anything new), so it's a Catch-22. Also, I really can't stop time, so I don't even have the option.

"CLASSIC INSPIRATION. LEISURE CLASS INNOVATION.

The ambitious first instrument from Leisure Class Audio expands on the original Techstar line of drum synthesizers with new features, new drums, and greater flexibility.

The TS-30X Analog Drum Synthesizer is a 9 module drum synthesizer based on the TAMA Techstar TS-305 and TS-306 analog drum synthesizers of the 1980s. Similar to the Simmons and Pearl units of the time, the Techstar line provided all the glorious synthesized drums one could want in a similar package but with a trademark aggression that set it apart from the others.

VGM #218: Reunion // Final Fantasy VII (Synth Cover)

video upload by Amie Waters

"Someone commented that I should consider covering this deep cut from the Final Fantasy VII OST, and after listening to it I knew I would be covering it at some point. The FFVII soundtrack is just so full of incredible music I doubt I will run out of inspiring tracks from it any time soon. Huge shoutout to the goat, Nobuo Uematsu! This is also my very first fully 4K video and the first video made with my new camera!

Amie Waters uses synthesizers and vibes to create emotive and moving covers from your favorite movies, tv shows and video games. Some of her most well known work was made under her old name, Ace Waters, which includes Covers from Undertale, Zelda, and more. Her music covers a wide range of styles, from ambient mood pieces to progressive synth rock and everything in between."

50 Custom Patches for Madrona Labs Sumu

via SYNTH_NYC

"Following my 50 custom patches for Kaivo, I thought I gave Sumu a shot.

Sumu is even pushing further the sonic boundaries; you can create some never heard before sounds.

I have designed 50 custom patches from scratch (using the Default patch) for Madrona Labs Sumu (1.0.0b15)

You can listen to them in high resolution (24bit 96kHz PCM WAV masters, FLAC encoded) on my site (optimized for Chrome on MacOS and Windows): https://synthnyc.com/index.php/album/madrona-labs-sumu-custom-patches-bank-1/

or in low resolution on my bandcamp: https://synthnyc.bandcamp.com/album/sumu-custom-patches-bank-1

All sound demonstrations have external FX.

The first 25 patches are using factory Partials.
The last 25 patches are using PPG WaveTerm samples / transients
https://www.hermannseib.com/english/synths/ppg/wtbwave.htm#sorted
http://ppg.synth.net/waveterm/wt_lib.shtml
which I transformed into Partials using Vutu (0.9.9).

Those are my favorite PPG sounds; I have used them in my Waldorf M ‘The Blue Journey’ sound bank.
https://waldorfmusic.com/produkt/soundset-synth-nyc-the-blue-journey/

From patch 25, each patch name and sound file name has the PPG Transient name embedded in it; e.g. Sumu 34 T864 is using PPG Transient T864. I invite the audience to listen to both the PPG original sample and Sumu patch I created from it to assess the transformation (the objective is to create something new and different, not a 1:1 replica).

Starting from Patch Sumu 17 Clouds (and almost exclusively used till Patch 50), I’ve discovered an another way (compared to Default patch / most factory patches and user manual recommendations) to patch the Sumu Partials module. This opens up Sumu to ultra innovative sounds; you can use Sumu as a granular synthesizer with each grain harmonic having a different envelope / amplitude…

Sumu has become one of my all time favorite digital synthesizer along with Waldorf Iridium, Fred’s Lab Manatee and Korg modwave native.

I hope you’ll enjoy the sound bank as much as I enjoyed programming it."

Roland SH-5 44-Key Monophonic Analog Synthesizer SN 450417

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this listing, also on Reverb

"The 1976 Roland SH-5 is a legendary monophonic analog synthesizer, revered for its advanced features and powerful sound. A predecessor to the SH-7, the SH-5 stands out with its comprehensive array of controls and sound-shaping capabilities, making it one of the most versatile mono-synths ever produced.

Equipped with two analog VCOs offering triangle, ramp, square, and pulse waveforms, two LFOs, two filters, two VCAs, and both white and pink noise generators, the SH-5 has everything you need to create a wide range of sounds. The oscillators can be modulated by the LFOs or the ADSR envelope generator, giving you extensive control over your sound design. The two LFOs include adjustable rate and waveshape settings, with options for ramp, reverse ramp, triangle, sine, square, and delay, plus a Sample + Hold feature for added versatility.

The dual multi-mode filters are a highlight, offering high-pass, low-pass, and band-pass filtering with controls for cutoff, resonance, keyboard tracking, envelope sensitivity, and modulation. An additional band-pass-only filter expands the sonic possibilities even further. The two VCAs provide Attack/Release and ADSR envelopes, which can be triggered by the Sample + Hold, LFO #2, or an external audio trigger input.

The SH-5's mixer section allows you to adjust the levels of noise, VCO1, VCO2, ring mod, and external signals independently, and each of these signals can be routed through the VCA, multi-mode filter, band-pass filter, or both. The synthesizer also features stereo output with panning controls, portamento, and a ring modulator that adds even more depth to its sound-shaping capabilities.

Built around massive analog oscillators and robust multi-mode filters, the SH-5 delivers punchy, powerful bass, monstrous leads, and wild effects. Its sound is often compared to the highly sought-after System 100/700 modular units, but with a unique character all its own. The SH-5’s filters are particularly notable for retaining bass even when the resonance is cranked, unlike the SH-7. The resonant bandpass filter, used in parallel, produces stunning results, making this synth a powerhouse for creating serious electronic and dance music.

This particular SH-5 is in exceptionally clean condition and is fully functional, a rare find for a synthesizer of this age. It includes the original manual and cover, making it a complete and valuable addition to any collection."

Roland SH-7 44-Key Duophonic Analog Synthesizer SN 700514

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this listing, also on Reverb

"The Roland SH-7 is a rare and highly sought-after duophonic analog synthesizer, produced between 1978 and 1981. As one of the rarest models in the Roland SH series, the SH-7 offers a wealth of creative control and sound design possibilities. It features two oscillators, one LFO, a 12db/octave low-pass and high-pass filter, two ADSR envelopes, a ring modulator, a noise generator, and 44 keys, along with CV and Gate functionality for seamless integration with other analog gear.

What sets the SH-7 apart from other SH models is its expanded feature set, including syncable VCOs, an external audio input, additional waveform shapes, and both white and pink noise generators with sample and hold. The mixer section allows for distortion of audio signals, making it ideal for crafting brash techno sounds. Despite its power and flexibility, the SH-7 is user-friendly, offering the standard SH sound with added depth and tweakability.

In terms of design, the SH-7 is considered one of the most beautiful and unusual vintage synthesizers Roland has ever built, with a layout that surpasses traditional synth modules. It excels in dynamic solos, bass, lead, and effect sounds, and has even been used by legendary bands like INXS.

This synthesizer is in very good condition, showing only light wear on the face panel. One original key has been repaired after a crack, which is shown in the pictures. The unit comes with the original manual, making it a complete and functional piece of vintage analog history."

SLM CONCERT SPECTRUM String Analog Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this listing

Pics of the inside below.

"This SLM Concert Spectrum string synthesizer keyboard was produced by Welson Synthesizer from 1975-76. Italian-made, stereo analog string/brass/piano synthesizer was made famous by Richard Tandy of The Electric Light Orchestra and Gregg Rolie of Journey.

The Concert Spectrum features:

61 keys (C2 - C7)

Split (between E4 and F4) that allows different sounds to be set for lower and higher keys

5 sound presets that can be layered (Cello, Violin, Horn&Trumpet, Piano, Harpsichord), with on/off buttons

10 volume sliders, 2 for each sound, setting the level of each preset in the total sound, 1 for each split section

4 decay sliders (actually: release sliders), 2 for the sustained section (Cello, Violin, Horn&Trumpet) (1 for each split section), 2 for the percussive section (Piano, Harpsichord) (1 for each split section)

Concert Effect

Stereo output (2 unbalanced mono jack outputs, with individual volume controls) on the back

2 connectors for optional volume pedals

Pitch (tuning) potentiometer

This synthesizer will need to be serviced to be fully functional. It powers on and produces a quiet sound for some of the sound presets but not all. The power cord has some fraying near the plug, and it will need repair as well. Pots and sliders have been scratchy when tested but not consistantly."

The missing Din Sync logo through me off. You can see what one with looks like with the logo here.

According to the listing:

"The special thing about my replica, however, is that I had the housing overmolded. Among other things, the DinSync logo has now been replaced by the Roland logo. Now it really is as if you had a real 808 in your studio. A real eye-catcher!"

Another note from the listing worth capturing:

"It should be mentioned that the “Accent” and “Cowbell” trigger outs on the rear panel are internally reversed. However, this was a mistake in the wiring diagram at the time but it does not affect the function in any way."

Isobutane - Pixelizing Your Ears (2006)

video upload by Isobutane

"There were times when my only piece of equipment was the Yamaha RM1x. While going through some old floppy discs I’ve came across some really old tracks from around 2005-2007. I was surprised how playful and full of energy these are. Technically and soundwise they are all pretty funky but I was really stunned by the liveliness of these old projects. So I’m like…yeah let’s share em. Maybe some people will even remember some of these from the past live shows. Shees that was ages ago… Ok, let’s go. 7/7

This is called Pixelizing your ears and it was made in 2006.

Serge New Timbral Oscillator (NTO) | Tutorials | Episode 05

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"I did my very best to remain objective and compared the NTO with simple basic sounds to my favorite VCO - the MakeNoise DPO - and the digital perfection of the Schlappi Three-Body. The NTO has been around since 1976 and represents the origins of modern synthesis. I just learned about it this year, so better late than never. It's surrounded by praise to the level of 'hard to believe'.

I used reverb on the raw sounds, and I found out that a digital effect can easily ruin the analog experience. I used ALM MFX, and it sounds great with NTO. But it sounds terribly aliased with the DPO and I wasn't happy with the Three-body result either. I wouldn't have known with raw sounds and I would not be able to share it. I've patched DPO a thousand times and it sounds clean and woody in the MakeNoise universe, but the raw waveforms are far from perfect and there's a certain bite. In this video, you may also learn that every VCO carries the signature of it's maker. DPO sounds like Tony Rolando. The 259 sounds like Buchla. Cs-L sounds like Jason Lim. Three-Body sounds like Schlappi. The NTO sounds like Serge, and now I have a new personal analog favorite.

The NTO is pure sophistication. I can say this both objectively (backed up by history and other reviews) and subjectively (it melts your heart). In the end it's just a VCO, which is about 10% of your whole patch. In many occasions, any quality VCO will be enough. But if you're looking for something special, this may be it. But your own personal opinion and taste will always be more important than mine!

You will be listening to analog through MFX AD/DA and my DAW's AD/DA. It's impossible to really listen to analog on YouTube but the DAW captures analog very well. There are plenty of raw sound NTO videos on youtube, so if you need to deepen your interest, please do some research. I've linked to an interview with Serge, where he explains a few things. It's a privilege to be able to hear him talk about it."
