Los Angeles, CA — Noise Engineering, known for their innovative Eurorack synthesizer modules, has made their first foray into guitar pedals with the announcement of Dystorpia, an entirely unique take on digital distortion and drive for guitar.

Noise Engineering has a reputation in the world of synthesizers for putting their own spin on classic concepts, and they’ve now brought their expertise to the guitar world. Having designed over a dozen modules that make use of distortion, Noise Engineering has taken ten years of experience creating new tones and brought it into an expansive overdrive toolkit.

“From the start, we knew we wanted to make something designed with guitarists in mind. Our testing initially focused entirely on how Dystorpia sounds with the more complex dynamics of guitars. Once we got there, we started trying it on other instruments and we were excited at how well we’d hit our mark; Dystorpia sounds great on guitars, but also basses, synths, drums, and more,” said Stephen McCaul, co-owner and Chief Noisemaker.

Dystorpia features three different distortion parameters. Gain sets the input level going into the rest of the pedal, and can overdrive for classic driven timbres. As the Blend knob is turned up, it adds in a slight saturation for some gentle distortion on its own. This makes it easier to timbrally balance the unaffected dry sound with the heavily processed wet signal. Fold controls a wavefolding algorithm, a technique taken from the world of synthesizers that creates a unique flavor of harmonic distortion. Pura adds a full-wave rectifier to the mix, another unique distortion.

Along with all of that distortion, Dystorpia features an expression-controllable Tone control with variable mid-band frequency, a switchable noise gate, and an optional suboctave generator.
Dystorpia also features two foot switches. On the right, a buffered bypass turns off and on the distortion processing. The left foot switch activates a latching or momentary freeze effect, infinitely sustaining a sound until it’s unfrozen again. While a sound is frozen, the pedal can still process new sounds at the input, allowing the performer to play over a frozen signal.

With so many tone-shaping options and performative features, Dystorpia is much more than just another fuzz or overdrive pedal. Dystorpia encompasses an entire pedalboard worth of distortion and tonal effects in a compact and fun package.

"35 years ago Waldorf Music released its first instrument, the Microwave, which took the hearts of the leading musicians and producers of the nineties by storm. Its vibrate and distinctive sound transported the early wavetable sounds of the eighties into the rising electronic dance music of the following decade. Massive base lines, enigmatic wavetable modulations, brutal attacks and pads smooth like silk have been inspired generations of musicians. Microwave’s unique interpretation of wavetable synthesis combined with analogue filters defined what hybrid synthesis is at its best.

Now’s the time to bring back this magical instrument in a software form to the digital workstations of producers and musicians world-wide. The Waldorf Microwave 1 Plugin was painstakingly recreated from the original hardware with all its idiosyncrasies and wonderful singularities.

A multi-year effort and a labor of love which analyzed and modeled the original instruments down to the finest sonic details of every aspect of the hardware. Only the first generation of the Microwave and also the Waldorf Wave were based on a custom developed integrated circuit called the Waldorf ASIC. In combination with the legendary Curtis filter chips and a very unique 68k CPU based controller software the ASIC defined a very special flavor of wavetable sound unparalleled to none. No one else than the inventor of Wavetable Synthesis of the eighties, Wolfgang Palm, helped to design this unique chip. Waldorf took a huge effort to analyze and recreate this integrated circuit within the plug-in. As the original, the plug-in runs the internal synthesis with the ultra high sampling rate of 250 kHz regardless of the DAW sampling rate. The recreated digital waveforms have been bit-by-bit compared with the original to be 100% identical.

Even the old-school digital-to-analogue converters of the original hardware were modeled with their non-linearities and tone shaping color which were leading into the two Curtis filter chips variants used for the revisions A and B of the original hardware. The plug-in allows further for artificially detuning and recalibrating of the analogue components. Brutal attacks, snappy decays and a plethora of wonderful transients define the sound of the first generation Microwave. But the Microwave 1 Plug-In goes one step further: Its modern and inviting graphical user-interface reveals many aspects of the synthesis engine which were hidden before in the original hardware by its sparse hard to use interface.

Its livelihood never sounding mechanical but always different was based on a very unique architecture to create the envelopes, LFOs and modulations which was painstakingly recreated by the plug-in down to the finest grains.

A fully scalable modern interface with readable high-contrast fonts supports an intuitive sound editing process with many graphical representations of the wavetables, envelopes and filter response curves using animations for modulations and playing positions. The Microwave 1 was never as close as this under your finger tips. A joy to edit sounds with.

But we stopped not here, for the first time the inner makings of the Microwave have been put to the surface. Based on the internal control tables the user can now easily edit existing wavetables and create new ones in a very unique and intuitive process. All the original wavetables are available with their control structures and the full original waveform catalogue. In addition to user wavetables, also user waveforms can be created within the plug-in. Additional randomization modes make wavetable editing fun and sonically surprising as experienced never before. The multi-mode becomes now a weapon of its own for sound design. Originally hard to edit from the panel, the plug-in UI allows now for quickly layering of single sounds to create the most complex and exciting sonic structures.

An easy to use mixer page lets you fine tune their sonic relationships. Even the more exotic feature like tuning and velocity tables have been implemented and can be edited in the UI. All the original factory single and multi-mode sounds are contained in the plug-in in combination with new and modern sound presets. Original MIDI and Sys-Ex dump files can be imported such you can load your favorites from the past. Moreover, the plug-in can be used to control the original hardware are a graphical editor. If you a lucky owner of an Microwave first generation, the plug-in allows you to take your beloved hardware virtually with you where-ever you like and keeping its magical sound. The Microwave 1 plug-in comes as VST, VST3, AU and AAX for macOS and Windows supporting the major digital audio workstations."

"Such a sweet sounding synth, really nothing quite like it! The Crumar Bit One is a main stay of synth-waver Com Truise, but its true roots belong to Italo Disco. With two DCO's it really is on par with the Juno series (if only it had sliders and that slick chorus). Two LFO's and Envelopes round out this beast to make a superb piece of kit.

Sadly, the Bit One fell far short of glory in the midi department, but this has been remedied by the installation of the HKA midi kit in this unit. This upgrade does the following:

Local keyboard and external MIDI can be used at the same time - plugging a cable into the MIDI IN socket no longer disables the local keyboard. Local control can be turned off in setup mode if desired.

Receiving channel for external MIDI can be set on the synth itself, and is remembered on power-off. (Transmitted MIDI channel is fixed on channel 1)

MIDI handling is much more reliable. The board filters out all other channels before they get to the main CPU, also ignoring any messages that it cannot use, so there are no more MIDI overload-caused crashes, stuck notes etc.

Now receives MIDI pitch bend (±2 semitone range) and mod wheel. MIDI mod wheel is provided by a dedicated LFO, independent from the Bit One's own two LFOs. The modulation depth can also be controlled by MIDI channel aftertouch.

Receives MIDI sustain pedal (CC 64), which is used to control the Bit One's hold functionality.

Adds an arpeggiator with up, down, up + down and random modes. (Requires an external MIDI clock source such as a drum machine)

The Bit One also has some trouble with memory and battery longevity. This unit saves patches 10-60, and some are blank. I have programmed the blank patches and had success saving them, but perhaps it is worth replacing the battery on this unit (its probably pretty old anyway).

While the lighting in the photos makes this particular Bit One look a little crusty, natural light does wonders and this unit is in tip top shape, a real gem. It has been well taken care of. The keys are a little yellow as well, but I've seen worse.

The headphone output is a little noisy, but the main outputs are clean as a whistle. You know, the outputs the do the heavy lifting."

I decided to indulge AND to add two other recent lpgs to the table with the Sosumi by Nekya Circuits, a small 4hp, knobless, dual LPG inspired by the original Buchla 292; and the Centaur's Gate by Shakmat, that does MUCH more (multi mode filters / VCA, with preset recall) than all others but does have an internal analog vactrol emulation that I wanted to check out alongside the others."
