Fantas by Caterina Barbieri played on T-16 Semi-Modular Analog Synthesizer (based on ARP 2600)

video upload by Nitecaller.

"This is my cover of the hypnotic and beautifully crafted track ‘Fantas’ by Caterina Barbieri. It was introduced to me by my brother (who helped design the PCBs for my synth!) and I’ve always been perplexed by the rhythms and sounds that she creates. It took me a while to transcribe this one, but I think it really brings this instrument to life.

Audio signal chain: T-16, Focusrite 18i20, Ableton Live, EQ, Ableton Echo, Valhalla Supermassive, Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor.

[The T-16 is a custom semi-modular synth largely based on the analog circuits of the original ARP 2600 and ARP Odyssey, with additional modifications and modules.]

Ashun Sound Machines Hydrasynth Explorer – complex synthesis, control and modulations made easy

video upload by mutech.media.australia

"Ken ‘Flux' Pierce from Ashun Sound Machines gives us a deep dive on the Hydrasynth Explorer, a synth designed with simplicity in mind. Despite its size and the fact it can even run on batteries, the Hydrasynth Explorer is not light on for features, or in-depth sound design features.

Almost everything can be modulated, controlled, or otherwise sculpted by touching the relevant parameter buttons. Assigning LFO control, creating a sequence, and modulating any parameter with almost anything else is remarkably easy."

The Doppler is a polyphonic, 2-operator FM synthesizer with a unique approach to sculpting, tweakability, and has 8-note polyphony. It's designed for sonic exploration, where every knob twist reveals a new sound that's uniquely your own.

Ultra-tweakability is at the core of the Doppler. It features a single, powerful algorithm, but the magic happens when you start adjusting its parameters. Even the subtlest tweaks lead to big shifts in the overall sound, making every turn feel like a discovery.

At the heart of the Doppler areThe Doppler is controlled via MIDI through a USB-C port, making it easy to integrate into your setup. Most modern, class-compliant MIDI controllers with USB functionality will plug in and work instantly with no setup required. Plus, the Doppler powers your controller, simplifying your cord management. For older controllers with only DIN connections, a USB-to-DIN converter works wonderfully. two sine waves that form the foundation of its sound. The modulator wave is quantized and can modulate both the carrier's phase and frequency—or both at once for even more complexity. The carrier wave can even be sent through a feedback loop to modulate itself. Plus, there's a 9-octave pink noise source to modulate the carrier, adding texture and a lo-fi grit.

The modulator sine wave features two rotary switches that control its frequency through a quantized octave and semitone shift. The Octave rotary switch offers a 5 octave range, allowing you to go two octaves above and two octaves below the carrier’s frequency. The Semitone rotary switch gives you a 12-semitone range, from the base note up to 11 semitones above. Both switches click into place and are perfectly quantized in relation to the carrier's frequency.

The Doppler features a standard ADSR envelope, but there are a couple of cool nuances that really enhance its functionality. By default, the ADSR envelope only affects the carrier wave. However, when you flip the Env Mod toggle on, the envelope also influences the amount of frequency modulation applied to the carrier. On top of that, the Mod Trail knob lengthens the attack value, but only on the modulator wave. This gives you the ability to make the modulation swell in, adding an extra layer of depth.

Portland, OR, USA March 12, 2025 – AI Synthesis has announced the Eurorack High Power Supply

The Eurorack High Power Supply is a low-noise solution for powering large, power hungry systems. The Power Supply supplies a total of 5 AMPs (5,000mA) of +12v power, 2.5 Amps (2,500mA) of -12V power, Ground, and 400mA of +5V power to your modules via 12 shrouded connectors, and multiple chain points to other distribution boards. Four LEDs indicate status of the four power rails, and the Power Brick is included. The Eurorack High Power Supply uses super quiet DC to DC converters to turn one powerful DC brick into four reliable, quiet, power rails:

+12V A: 2.5 Amps
+12V B: 2.5 Amps
-12v: 2.5 Amps
+5V: 400mA
Headers 1-6 Draw their +12V from +12VA, and Headers 7-12 draw their +12V from +12VB.

“In the year 2000, I was in college and obsessed with modular synths, but could barely afford to eat. I knew it was possible to build your own synth, but there wasn’t anyone, or anywhere to turn to for advice. In the past decade, much more information has been published online, and in 2013 I started down my path to DIY modular. Even with all of the information online, there still lacked a single, simple, comprehensive guide for those looking to build their own synthesizer. I want AI Synthesis to be that guide. Prior to building my own synth, I was a dreamer, after building my modular, I felt I had awoken. I want to help others do the same.”

-Abraham Ingle

Founder, AI Synthesis

In addition to providing step by step build instructions, schematics, and circuit explanations, the site also includes a guide for getting started in modular synthesis, and a series of DIY Guides, with information regarding how Resistors actually work, and how to integrate a $26 scope into your Eurorack system.

Omnitone Eurorack Modular Synthesizers

video uploads by Omnitone

Playlist & modules:

1. This is Rhythmi.
Rhythmi is a Eurorack drum sequencer that allows you to dial in your groove, and explore it by evolving the pattern and modulating the energy. It allows for rhythmic inspiration and creativity without the burden of step programming. The evolve parameter enables smooth transitions between related rhythms through the use of branches. New branches can be generated at the push of a button, loading up a whole new branch of related rhythms to explore. The Evolve parameter is the heart of Rhythmi, its inspiration, and defining feature. Allowing rhythms to shift, transform, and melt into one another. The Clock Section provides internal or external clocking with division or multiplication. The Customize Section shapes individual drum elements through density and syncopation. The Global Section introduces macro-level control over the rhythm via the Energy, Evolve, Length and Swing parameters, dynamically shaping fills and variations. Rhythmi has a jumper cable connector on the back to pair up seamlessly with Beatsi, the drum voice it was designed alongside with.

2. This is Beatsi.
Beatsi is our love letter to modular drums! Inspired by classic modular drum synthesis which uses the fundamental building blocks, Beatsi’s timbres were created using the same methods, only digitally, to minimize footprint. Beatsi is not a sample player or a physical modeller, and it’s meant to be that way. Beatsi’s interface allows for control over individual piece Timbre, Pitch, Decay, and Level. The timbres are organized into 3 kits: an orange (acoustic) kit, a blue (low-fi) kit, and a green (alien) kit. Within these kits the timbres blend smoothly into one another allowing for seamless modulation. Beatsi has two CV modulation inputs which are assignable to any and all parameters with individual attenuversion. Beatsi may be small, but it packs a serious punch.

3. This is Rosci.
TUNABLE PARAMETERS BREAKDOWN: COMPLEXITY: Essentially a generation of unique timbre. ROUNDNESS: Set the basic shape of your waveform. Go from from sharp to soft sound, similar to filtering. HARMONICS: Add up to 6 harmonies to your sound. The choir's here. FORMANTS: Accentuate certain overtones in your sound (like a voice singing "ooo", "ahh", "eee"). DETUNE: Add a classic 'detune' with a changing phase wave for extra wide sound. HOW DOES IT WORK? It is a pipeline of algorithms, which generates and modifies a waveform starting from top to bottom. Rosci works on a principle of key points: the generate button generates key point location and amplitudes to be passed down the pipeline.

Tunable parameters:
Beginning with complexity, you set the number of key points (even numbers only to create a waveform). Lowest complexity sets two points, and highest complexity sets up to 20 points. The number of key points will vary with each waveform generated. From there, the roundness sets the type of interpolation of the key points, from square to sine. Adjusting the harmonics creates copies of the waveform and adds them to the original waveform at double, triple, ... up to 6x the base frequency. Formants maintains the frequency of the wave, but squishes it so there is 'empty space' in between (this is also called pulsar synthesis). Finally, detune copies the waveform and 'detunes it' by increasing the frequency ever so slightly. And there you have it: a unique Rosci soundscape :)

4. This is Melodi.
Melodi is a semi-random sequence generator built for Eurorack! No more time spent fidgeting with sequence steps, Melodi generates sequences based on the mood you set so you can create the sound you’re searching for—It can be tweaked to create anything from a powerful bassline to a sparkly melody.
5. Made by Rosci.

"Zone16 is an experimental track where beats and textures intertwine, built using the classic sampler MPC2000 and the legendary synthesizer Prophet-5.
The tight groove of the MPC2000 supports the rhythmic structure, while the warm analog sound of the Prophet-5 expands the space, creating a unique sound world.
PureData + GEM was used for the video, and the visual expression of fantastic particles dancing like a flow further enhances the floating feeling of the music.
The sound and video unfold in sync, creating a work that gives you a sense of immersion as if you have stepped into a different dimension."

Spitfire Audio - The Albions Orchestral Selects Walkthrough

video upload by Spitfire Audio

Press release follows.

Spitfire Audio crafts carefully curated collection of evocative ensemble patches from acclaimed ALBION range as THE ALBIONS ORCHESTRAL SELECTS

LONDON, UK: leading sounds and sample libraries creator Spitfire Audio is proud to announce availability of THE ALBIONS ORCHESTRAL SELECTS — shipping as a carefully curated collection of the most inspiring and evocative ensemble patches brought together from across its acclaimed ALBION range to offer a rich tapestry of hand-picked orchestral sounds that let the individual character of the orchestra shine, supplying composers with a wide range of expressive possibilities to bring any cinematic moment to life — as of March 6…

It is fair to say that THE ALBIONS ORCHESTRAL SELECTS is testament to the power, versatility, and, indeed, longevity of the ALBION range — after all, the original ALBION, which was effectively re-released by popular demand as ALBION LEGACY in 2023, kick-started a whole range of all-in- one composer tools for cinematic inspiration, its collection of orchestral ensembles featuring strings, brass, woodwind, and percussion, as well as loops, synths, and atmospheres, all creatively captured in the beautiful resonance of the hallowed (Lyndhurst) Hall at London’s legendary AIR Studios way back in 2011.

The exceptional collection that is THE ALBIONS ORCHESTRAL SELECTS duly draws from six distinct ALBION libraries — namely, ALBION COLOSSUS, a gargantuan, all-in-one toolkit that pushes contrast, dynamism and intensity to eleven, elevating scores to breathtaking new heights in a new blockbuster era; ALBION NEO, a modern cinematic collection centred around a chamber-sized orchestra with a super-intimate string section split by divisi across all articulations to offer anyone access to the incredible definition and expression of classic and progressive techniques, accompanied by an encyclopaedic range of progressive synths, loops, and textures; ALBION TUNDRA, taking a 100-piece orchestra playing never-before-sampled techniques at the very edge of silence to capture a characteristically Scandinavian sound; ALBION ONE, a renowned, industry-standard orchestral sample library that provides everything needed to make film music, comprising a 109-piece orchestra accompanied by a thunderous cinematic percussion section, plus warp-able loops designed by award-winning engineers and an enormous steam synthesiser; ALBION ICENI, an award- winning package boasting epic low-end brass and electrifying woodwinds, harmonised with a string ensemble encompassing an extensive range of cellos and basses alongside an extraordinary collection of thick, deep synth sounds and loops as an apocalyptic low-end orchestra; ALBION LOEGRIA, an expertly sampled chamber-sized orchestra, featuring strings, woods, brass, and cinematic drums alongside eclectic loops and an inspiring organic synth as the perfect starting point for independent films, period dramas, or more cerebral and intimate music; and last, but by no means least, the aforesaid ALBION LEGACY — as a carefully curated selection of sounds designed to blend seamlessly into any scoring project.

Painting vivid sonic landscapes to bring musical visions to life is even easier using THE ALBIONS ORCHESTRAL SELECTS’ inspiring and evocative ensemble patches... think Epic Strings, selections played by larger string ensembles including the full dynamic range of ALBION ONE’s strings and the soaring highs and powerful lows of ALBION ICENI and ALBION TUNDRA that range from delicate textures to thunderous power, providing everything needed to create truly unforgettable string passages; Intimate Strings, showcasing the nuanced detail of ALBION NEO and the emotive beauty of ALBION LOEGRIA, capturing intimacy with exceptional clarity and expression; Epic Brass, bringing together the enormous cinematic brass patches from ALBION ONE’s full brass range, the majesty of ALBION TUNDRA, and the colossal low-end of ALBION ICENI to provide the tools needed to create brass arrangements that resonate with power and emotion; Intimate Brass, a more intimate and nuanced approach to brass scoring, achieved through the focused intensity of ALBION NEO’s brass, with long and short staccatissimo articulations; Epic Woodwinds, harnessing the soaring melodies of ALBION ONE’s woodwinds, the haunting textures of ALBION TUNDRA, and the rich depths of ALBION ICENI to provide a wide range of woodwind colours and textures; Intimate Woodwinds, providing the warmth, intimacy, and nuance needed for delicate woodwind passages, courtesy of ALBION NEO; and Albion Percussion, unleashing the thunderous power of the DARWIN percussion ensemble from ALBION TUNDRA, the cinematic impact of ALBION ONE’s XXL percussion, ALBION LEGACY’s CYMBALS, and the nuanced detail of ALBION LOEGRIA’s FINE DRUMS LOOSE and FINE DRUMS TIGHT as a diverse collection providing a rhythmic foundation for any scoring project.

Paul Thomson — company co-founder, and an accomplished composer in his own right — remains enamoured with Spitfire Audio’s acclaimed ALBION range, resulting in THE ALBIONS ORCHESTRAL SELECTS, stating: “There are so many sounds in these collections that are instant cue-starters, giving you a film score sound for any genre right out of the box; for this selection, I’ve pulled out my favourite patches from the orchestral sections recorded in Lyndhurst Hall at AIR Studios, locking together beautifully but allowing a huge range of expression and style, so this is the perfect introduction to the ALBION series — my source of instant inspiration!”

Presented in Native Instruments’ KONTAKT 7 virtual instrument platform, the NKS (NATIVE KONTROL STANDARD®)-ready/AAX-, AU-, VST2-, and VST3-compatible, 26.3 GB download-sized THE ALBIONS ORCHESTRAL SELECTS library is available for MacOS 11, 12, or 13 (latest update) and Windows 10 or 11 (latest Service Pack) at a 20%-discounted, time-limited promo price of £119.00 GBP (inc. VAT)/$199.00 USD/€179.00 EUR — from here: https://www.spitfireaudio.com/the-albions-orchestral-selects (Crossgrade pricing is available to existing owners of any library from the ALBION range.)

Anyone who does not already own KONTAKT 7 is invited to download KONTAKT 7 PLAYER for free; though SPITFIRE SYMPHONIC EXTRAS will work with both KONTAKT 8 variations, it does not need either.

Sequence Replicatin' with MultiMod (Level 0) | Make Noise

video upload by MAKEN0ISE

"How would you go about replicating a sequence? When it comes to the modular signal path there are a number of intersection points to cut into. For example you could use the word “sequence” to refer to the final audio output of a synthesizer that is being sequenced. It could also mean the oscillator outputs prior to having filtering or effects applied. It could mean the series of stepped control voltage values that determine the oscillators’ pitches from moment to moment. That’s a beauty of the availability of signal flow to us in the modular synth, that we can cut in and disrupt at any of these points, all of which work together in concert to determine the ultimate output."

A 1U Delay with character - Crypta by Ritual Electronics

video upload by Stazma

"Today we are checking out the new 1U delay from Ritual Electronics: Crypta.
It's a PT2933 delay, meaning it has that crunchy and lo-fi character you are to expect from this chip, but this one is taking that crunchyness VERY far, with it's 'poubelle' switch ('poubelle' is French for 'trash can'). All the way from classic delay & chorus to fuzz like PWM sounds, there's quite a bunch of fun stuff to try with this thing.

Have fun!!!"

"From short and clean delays to long and filthy echoes all the way to utter sonic destruction

It can reflect, it can smear, it can resonate, it can dub, it can noise, it can no-input. Crypta is a powerful 1U Eurorack delay module, designed to bring complex, immersive echoes to your modular setup. With intuitive controls for delay time, feedback, and mix, Crypta allows for smooth adjustments, whether you're aiming for subtle short resonator-like repeats, dramatic, cascading echoes or full on broken noises.

Designed to span from ultra-short, clean delays to long, filthy echoes, Crypta pushes the PT2399 delay to its limits. We’ve abused the modest karaoke chip to get around 4 seconds of delay—possibly the longest anyone has dared to go.

Crypta has a 'Poubelle' switch. Means 'trash can' in French. In middle position you have your regular delay. To the left and to the right you get two flavors of broken. Circuit bending by design, similar to the Color switch which makes Guillotine so great."

"This video explores some of the sonic variations that can be made within this single EaganMatrix preset, 'Silver Bar.' Variations like these can be achieved by making adjustments to the Macro controls within the preset, but more significantly by employing different playing techniques and the Touch Control Area on the playing surface of the Continuum.

Silver Bar employs new firmware 10.50 features in the BiqGraph Bank of the EaganMatrix.

Mastering is a Fine Art | But the basics are useful too!

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"First of all I am not a mastering engineer. I learned the basics at Abbey Road Institute which involve EQ, glue compression, a bit of analog color, a bit of sparkle (exciter), a tiny bit of glue reverb and a final EQ to iron out the final extremes. I learned from certified mastering engineers in London, but I don't have their experience of making any track from any artist sound better and ready for the big world. That's beyond a skill, it's an Art (with a capital A) and it takes years to learn. It would also require good ears, great taste, the ability to understand what the customer wants and extensive knowledge about what's competitive.

I've added this video to the Modular Classroom playlist [embedded below], but it's not a regular episode. I just feel it belongs there.

In the modular niche we don't work with console mixes (or tracks in a DAW). We usually record a single take to a single track and when it's recorded we can't tweak anything. It's 'frozen' in time. It's also unlikely to be able to record the same piece twice. In the modular niche we're back in the late 60's and early 70's. But we also have the advantage of using a real instrument that sounds amazing.

I recorded a problematic track for this video. I didn't know it was problematic until i listened with headphones. If you care a bit about a good final track, ready sharing on your new BandCamp album, here are a few tips you may find useful. Since we can't really change our stereo track, we may need to photoshop it a bit. With Mastering, 'less is more' is the golden rule. Sometimes people ask me about my 'mastering chain' because they like the sound of my patches. The hard truth is that I don't use any. I can't make it more less. I just record raw, and iron out possible problems BEFORE I record. When I record a Serge case, I don't have to fix anyhting. When I record a case with many digital modules, I get in-case clipping, tough resonance and stereo low end issues (mud). A DAW like Ableton offers all the tools you need, but the FabFilter tools are worth buying. You don't have to worry about subscriptions and new versions, they're excellent.
