Polyphonic 1974 Minimoog

Published on Nov 25, 2019

I was thinking, that ain't no "mini" Moog, then I realized the Minimoogs are racked on the right.

"Demo of polyphonic Minimoog model D
Using a MIDI keyboard and a MOTM-650 MIDI to CV converter. The second revision oscillator board has separate CV pitch input modification to allow 3 note polyphonic playing.
Works quite well and retains the original Minimoog voice while allowing the oscillator intervals to be selected via a keyboard."

SynthSummitShows with the makers

Update2: You can sign up to be notified with the Kickstarter launches here.

Update: some info on the module via https://synthtech.com:

"INTRODUCING THE E520 HYPERION, A STEREO EFFECTS PROCESSOR

Kickstarter campaign launches on Nov. 15th and the KS page will activate on Nov. 10th. Estimated shipping: late May 2020.

OVERVIEW

The E520 Hyperion is a mono/stereo in, stereo out effects module. It is 48HP wide and uses less than 300ma of +12V and less than 70ma of -12V.

Powered by a 480MHz ARM Cortex M7 CPU, the E520 has 64MB on on-board SDRAM for recording up to 6min of stereo audio at 48KHz sample rate. The LCD screen and optical encoder navigation uses the same 'shallow' menu scheme of our E352 and E370 modules, with the addition of 4 'soft keys' for selecting options without having to leave the main page.

The E520 uses a premium audio path not usually found in Eurorack. Crystal Semi CODECs, TI OPA-series op amps and WIMA film caps in the output stage are used along with low-noise, dedicated LDO voltage regulators for a clean, full soundstage. Audio conversion uses 48KHz sample rate, 24bit resolution with a line or synth level setting.

Please note this is a 'living document' and subject to modification at any time over the next 8 weeks.

Exploring The Cursus Iteritas Magnus

Published on Sep 29, 2019 John L Rice

"This is such a versatile oscillator and can produce simple pure tones to very rich complex ones! Its output is great for filter using subtractive synthesis techniques but I didn't use ANY filters in this video at all, just lots of modulation sources and reverb/delay effects.

Synthesis Technology MOTM-700 Dual VC Router

"The MOTM 700 Dual Voltage Controlled Router is a unique module.

A pair of separate weighted switches that can route audio or voltage, and can be run parallel or in series.

It is controlled by setting a potentiometer at a value from -5 to +5 volts on the front panel, thus setting a threshold for incoming CV to throw the switch one way or the other. It can be used as 1 in 2 out, or 2 in 1 out, per switch.

It's like having an extra set of hands protruding from your body patching furiously fast on your behalf, but without the hideous immoral experiments to get you there.

Some examples of uses:

Split points. Play your keyboard, as you go up or down the notes several events can be programmed to happen, be it timbral, textural, or pure insanity. Or unpure, your preference.

Ben Bulig Studio Tour - EPIC MODULAR SYNTH SETUP

Published on Jul 22, 2019 Pete Crane

---

Quick note: The 5U he's referring to is the MOTM format. 5U is also commonly used to refer to the MU/synthesizers.com/dotcom format. 5U refers to the height. MOTM has different horizontal spacing when it comes to the mounting screw holes and it uses it's own power connects. It's similar to eurorack and 3U referring to both the Doepfer and Analogue Systems formats. You can find a modular format chart posted here back in 2007, formats covered on wikipedia here, and info on the MOTM format on Synthesis Technologies site here.

"Friday, September 21, 2018 - Control presents Creative Synth Patching with ambient electronic artist Robert Rich & Paul Schreiber, founder and chief engineer of MOTM and Synthesis Technology.

Rich and Schreiber's long friendship and collaboration most recently found Rich as head beta-tester for Schreiber's epic E370 Quad Morphing VCO. This intimate evening brings the two friends together again for an exploratory discussion and a demo of Robert Rich's own style of patching techniques, to help the synthesist move beyond the basics of signal path. Rich also discusses his influences and recording techniques.

Thank you Robert Rich and Paul Schreiber.

Podcast 250: Paul Schreiber

Published on Oct 21, 2018 20Objects

Previous 20Objects interviews with Paul Schreiber below.

"Note: This is a heavily-edited version of our discussion. If you want to hear (most of) the whole discussion, which lasts about 1:30, you can download it here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/artmusictec...)

For the 250th episode, I decided to go back to the interview that helped put this podcast on the map. Episode 13 featured Paul Schreiber, and we discussed everything from the kickoff of his business to the importance of Eurorack. The interview took of (thanks to Synthtopia's coverage and social media), and the podcast was off and running.

In this chat, we get into his latest devices, which are much more ambitious undertakings. We also learn about his experiences with Kickstarter, his upcoming book project, and get his read on the world of gaming. There's no end of fun when talking with Paul; you'll hear me howling with laughter in the background."

Podcast 013: Paul Schreiber

Published on Dec 6, 2017 20Objects

"Paul Schreiber has seen it all, from building his own Heathkit gear, to designing automotive stereo systems, to designing cell phones to creating modular synthesizer systems. I was, of course, mostly interested in the latter, but I was also interested in how modular systems were informed by his earlier experiences. In this interview, Paul shares how he learned electronics, how he designed the MOTM modular system, and also shares his advice for anyone interested in digging into it themselves.

This is the first in a series of interviews informed by the forum citizens over at muffwiggler.com. Don't let the name freak you out; I'm sure it started out as some sort of inside joke, but it really is the main meeting place for all things modular."

Podcast 072: Paul Schreiber Revisited

Published on Dec 6, 2017 20Objects

"If you would give me an hour and ask me how I'd want to spend it, talking with Paul Schreiber would be at the top of my request list. I appreciate his sense of humor, his strong feelings about thing, and his willingness to share openly about any subject that might come to mind. I also appreciate that, by having been a 'hobby' synth maker, he has always been able to stay at arm's length from the grittier side of the industry.

Some of this podcast covers similar ground to my first discussion with him (podcast 13), but as is the case with Paul, each discussion about something reveals new information. And Paul is a treasure trove of information, having been there at the crusty beginnings of the new modular revolution."

MOTM Format 5U Synthesis Technologies

8 channel voltage source module with the AtomPro28 processor.
Information and programs for this module can be found on modularsynthesis.com, it currently has the Super Sequencer program installed.

Uses the RS-232 cable to cpu to switch programs (cable included). Not sure if there is a USB converter or if you will need a serial port on your cpu to change programs.

Great condition and works perfectly.
* The STOP (on)-off-on switch is slightly bent (see pic - works fine)
* The EXT I/O panel piece is not connected.
* Has 2 power cables"

"A project for the truly insane! Both boards are soldered but untested. No guarantees! 8U MOTM panel, in silver of course, and some mods are probably implied. The only hardware included is what's shown, and I'll throw in the missing knobs too. You have to love wiring to take this one on.

Schematics (complete, it seems) and user guide included. From 2002! Good luck!"

Flutter Noodle

Published on Jan 4, 2018 John L Rice

"While experimenting with polyphonic patches I recorded this little tidbit and made a video out of it along with some still shots of the patch.

There are four identical voices each using the following modules:
Synth Tech MOTM-300 VCO (pulse wave out)
Synth Tech MOTM-800 EG (for VCA modulation)
Synth Tech MOTM-190 dual VCA (1/2)
Moon Modular 517 dual VCF (1/2)
Moon Modular 511D ADSR (1/2) (for VCF modulation)
Synth Tech MOTM-380 quad LFO (1/4) for VCO PWM

The 4 voices are controlled via a Roland A-88 MIDI keyboard through a Synth Tech MOTM-650 quad MIDI to CV converter. The Moon 517 VCFs are additionally modulated by 4 outputs of a Krisp1 OCTO LFO which is itself modulated by a MOTM-320 LFO.

The "flutter" effect is created by switching the Moon 511D EGs to Gated Retrigger mode so that when a key is held down the EG that modulates the VCF channel for the associated voice goes into loop mode. Three of the voices loop at one rate and the fourth 'lead' voice is set to loop at a faster rate.

Effects used are Strymon BigSky and Timeline pedals, Roland RSP-550 multi effects rack and a touch of a Sony reverb plugin."

EQD (short version)

Published on Sep 5, 2017 Richard Galbraith

"This is the second half of a video I posted a while back but then took down. I always liked the second part much more than the first part, so I decided to cut out the first 5+ minutes. Sorry for the abrupt beginning, but oh well. Here's the original description:

This was recorded in two overdubbed takes. The first take is a bed of deep synth tones, provided by my MU modular, with added Arturia Microbrute and Mutable Instruments Rings in Easter Egg mode.

The second take is a Sela cajon which I mic'd with two mics: one for cajon audio and the other plugged into the Synthesizers.com instrument interface in order to trigger Rings. Thus, in this take you can hear the strumming sound of Rings with every cajon hit.

Key modules include Synthesizers.com's oscillators, Q150 low pass filter, and quantizer bank; Megaohm Audio Delta low pass filter; SSL/Fritz Doubledeka oscillator; FSFX/Fritz Teezer oscillator, and the MOTM 480 band pass filter.

Reverb and effects by Valhalla DSP."
