BugBrand StereoCompress Back in Production

via BugBrand

"Finally I have the StereoCompress back in production with the first new batch released today.

Over the year since it was last available I've had people regularly asking for it - it is, after all, a very high quality master compressor with interesting features and a great sound - but I spent a good while investigating whether I could have the design fully built for me. In the end life has proved a bit too much of a juggle right now to take such a step, but I still learned a fair bit in the process. So I'm doing this again like all my other designs - having the PCBs & SMD work done externally and then building the rest up myself.

Go here:::: http://bugbrand.co.uk/shop"

"The Stereo Compress (equal stress on the COM and the PRESS) further rounds out the line of red processors with a supreme quality stereo VCA compressor providing the proverbial sonic glue or adding a healthy dose of smash to your sounds. Happy gently coaxing the stereo bus or punching individual instruments into shape, the circuitry springs from a classic of British compression but entirely rebuilds the internals while combining several new twists, and is presented in a package that demands deep discovery within the realms of transient shaping.
The Stereo Compress is best considered in two parts - see block diagrams:

Audio Section -
The audio path is kept minimal with high quality components for low noise operation. The left and right channels are identical, each featuring Balanced Input Buffer, Compression VCA (2164 quad IC), Dry/Wet Blend VCAs (equal power crossfading for parallel compression) and Output Buffer. The unit can be used as a single mono compressor (use either left or right side) or ganged stereo, with the side-chain feeds being tapped post input buffer.

SideChain -
The SideChain signal is taken initially as an equal sum of left & right inputs, but this sum can either be externally processed using Send/Return loop, or a different signal can be inserted. The Insert point is followed by Low and High Cut filters (12dB/Oct) allowing frequency dependent compression.
The SideChain processing is arranged around a Feedback VCA stage and contains rectification, ratio setting (2:1, 4:1, 10:1), fully variable Attack and Release time constants, and wide range Threshold and Make Up Gain controls. A Gain Reduction meter shows how hard the unit is being driven and features internal LED indication to show when the unit is Active (low red glow for bypass, brighter white glow for active - Animated GIF of the Meter lights)."

New ALM Busy Circuits ALM018 - ‘MUM M8’ 8hp Eurorack Low Pass Filter

ALM018 - 'MUM M8' from ALM on Vimeo.

Apparently Vimeo still does not support embedded playlists, so you will find the additional demos further below.

"‘MUM M8’ is an 8hp Eurorack low pass filter building on the filter design used in the classic Akai S950 12 bit sampler with the addition of resonance, voltage control, clipped saturation and a dedicated VCA.

The low pass filter gives the recognisable super smooth vacuum like tone sucking sound which works magic on complex sources. The addition of clipped overdrive and intentionally aggressive self oscillating resonance compliment the smooth filter core by juxtaposing it into more wasp like territory with acidic squeals and a more gritty sound.

The filter core is a 6th Order Butterworth switched capacitor type design featuring an analog core but controlled by a high speed digital clock. This produces the characteristic smooth sounding filter but, as with the original S950, has a relatively high minimum cut off as to avoid ‘clock bleed’ into the filter output from the digital control. This minimum cut of point can be controlled via trimmers on the rear of the module.

The motivation for the module came from discussing filters in classic samplers with the artist Jack Adams – aka Mumdance. Jack suggested investigating the S950’s filter well known as for it use in classic use in early jungle and hardcore. From that point onward Jack provided inspiration, help and feedback in the development of the filter. Big up Mumdance.

Features

Eurorack recreation of classic sampler filter with added resonance and voltage control.
Dual audio inputs, one with VCA and level control.
Dual CV (with attenuversion) and manual control of cut off frequency.
Single CV (with attenuation) and manual control of resonance.
Ability to overdrive and saturate signals into filter core.
Reverse polarity protection.
Skiff friendly.
Designed and Made in the UK
Mumdance approved 100"

Roland CMU-800R w/ Radio Junkbox MIDI-IF Box & CV Out x 8

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
Published on Nov 28, 2017 Owen D RhythmDial

"Radio Junkbox midi box makes the CMU easily run by MIDI as shown here run by my Zaquencer. Drums from CMU run thru Vestafire distortions, synth parts just EQd and swept in Allen&Heath mixer, SpartaDelay and ZOOM reverb used in spots too."

The CMU-800R normally requires software and a vintage Apple II to work. The Junkbox MIDI-IF Box replaces that.

via this auction

"Nice condition vintage Roland CMU-800R and a MIDI-IF box from Radio Junkbox out of Japan that plugs into the weird super wide SCSI style original CMU cable and gives this unit great functionality by MIDI.

Individual audio outputs and main mix output.
Faders for audio levels work well for main mix adjustments.
Synth parts controls work well (decay, sustain)
8 channels of CV/Gate output based on MIDI channel inputs.
Power is 117v US power.
MIDI-IF box is awesome, includes its own 5V mini wall wart power supply, also sends out DINsync from incoming MIDI clock. Manual included for MIDI-IF box.

Sounds great too! Drums are very TR-606 like in circuitry and sound. The bass part is nice and full, deep and solid. The melody and chord part are similar sounding but chord part can play 4-note polyphony on its own. The synth parts are weak in their adjustment vs synths like the classic juno-106 but I’ve found adding fx like ring mod or resonant filters to them in eurorack or various rack units livens these parts up very well."

New Synthesizers.com Q157 SH++ 5U Module

Q157 SH++ Tour Published on Nov 27, 2017 synthesizersdotcom

"For more information visit http://www.synthesizers.com/

Hosted by Roger Arrick of Synthesizers.com"

"The Q157 SH++ is a Sample and Hold surrounded by accessory functions on a single-wide panel. There are 5 sections including an LFO with square and sine wave outputs, a frequency/gate divider, noise source with low-pass filtering, and a slew limiter with automatic looping. The slew limiter section also produces a decay envelope generator.

Several sections are connected together in a musically-useful way to create interesting modulation of oscillators and filters with minimal patching.

The LFO provides square wave and sine wave outputs simultaneously with an LED indicating speed. The LFO can be used to provide vibrato to oscillators, clocks to sequencers, or gates for the Sample and Hold section.

The Divider section automatically receives its input from the LFO's square wave unless a plug is inserted into its IN jack. Dividing gates can be useful for sequencer patches, arpeggiations, even sub-octave waveform generation.

The Sample and Hold section receives its gate from the LFO unless a plug is inserted into its GATE jack. The sample and hold input is automatically connected to the noise section if there is no plug in the IN jack.

The Noise section provides a white noise filtered by a 2-pole low-pass filter. The knob can also be jumpered as a volume control if desired.

The Decay/Slew section provides portamento for keyboard pitch, slew for the sample and hold output, creates envelopes from gates, or delays gate signals. Without a plug inserted into the IN jack, the slew mode automatically retriggers to create a trapezodial LFO waveform. In decay mode, a gate produces a decaying envelope to drive percussive patches."

Modor - New Eurorack Formant Filter // Synthfest 2017

Published on Nov 25, 2017 DivKidVideo

"I think this went largely missed by many at Synthfest but the new Modor eurorack modular formant filter sounded great! Stereo formant filter coming from their NF-1 synth in modular ... yes please! Looking forward to seeing how this develops."

via Modor Music

"We received the question quite a few times: 'When will you break up the Modor NF-1 in Eurorack pieces? Well, we 're not going to build Eurorack modules for everything there is in the NF-1, but we tought our formant filter is that special and unique we can't leave the modular world deprived of it ... :-)

So, here we are: Modor's Formant Filter in a Eurorack Module!

Modor's Formant Filter is a special filter that does a kind of 'vowel morphing' between three vowels. The big central FORMANT control is responsible for that, and on the Eurorack module there's of course a CV control (with attenuation) on this parameter.

You can imagine a formant filter as a set of parallel bandpass filters, picking up and amplifying a set of small frequency bands. For example, with these frequency bands around 750Hz, 1200Hz and 2800Hz, you get the sound of an 'A'. So far, nothing special. There are more formant filters around composed of a set of parallel bandpass filters.

It gets more interesting when you're able to 'morph' between different sets of those formant frequencies. Behind the central FORMANT control, there are 3 of those sets of frequencies. One at full left, one in the middle, and one fully right. So you can for example morph between A-E-O. Or U-I-E. Or AO-UI-EU. Or ...

That's what it does: morphing between different sets of formant frequencies, and that's why it sounds a lot more genuine vowelish than many other static bandpass combinators.

There are 10 preset vowels, that can be selected with the VOWEL button: A-E-O-I-OE-U-EI-EU-AO-U-UI. The vowels of the Dutch language... :-)

The 1-2-3-4 controls on top give you the possibility of composing your own vowels by manually adjusting the frequency bands."

Rob Papen Introduces SuBoomBass 2

Published on Nov 24, 2017 Rob Papen

"Rob Papen produces bigger booms and shake-shake-shake the rooms with SubBoomBass 2

“I've loved SubBoomBass from the start — instant access over lots of great-sounding deep basses that immediately sit nicely in the mix! A must-have for every dance producer!”
- Tom Holkenberg (a.k.a. Junkie XL), composer/producer (Mad Max: Fury Road, Deadpool), 2017

ECHT, THE NETHERLANDS: virtual instrument and effect plug-in developer Rob Papen Soundware is proud to announce availability of SubBoomBass 2 — succeeding the award-winning, self- explanatory floor-shaking SubBoomBass soft synth with the original (often) bass-heavy presets all present and accounted for alongside an abundance of new features and new sound colours to take things closer to the (cutting) edge — as of November 24…

It is immediately obvious to the naked eye that SubBoomBass 2’s GUI (Graphical User Interface) is on the receiving end of a musical makeover making for more comfortable control of all its fanciful features. Fortunately for fans of the original soft synth, SubBoomBass 2 retains its much-loved modelled analogue waveform-driven warmth, but brings into being a brave new world of new sound colours courtesy of supplemental spectrum waveforms, with high-quality thinking outside of the box-style samples sitting alongside a welcome inclusion of Karplus-Strong string synthesis — a method of physical modelling synthesis that loops a short waveform through a filtered delay line to simulate the sound of a hammered or plucked string or some types of percussion. Put it this way: with so much musical firepower placed at adventurous users’ fingertips, SubBoomBass 2 surely sets loose some seriously fresh-sounding and hitherto unheard sounds... above and beyond the (arguably) restrictive realms of dance production with which SubBoomBass first found its musical mark so beautifully.

But, Rob Papen being Rob Papen, there is so much more to SubBoomBass 2 than might first meet the eye... enter an X/Y screen (which will already be familiar to owners of the company’s critically-acclaimed BLUE-II and RAW soft synths both designed differently for different musical motivation in mind); access an all-new SEQUENCER (capable of running four patterns); plus an easy-to-use BANK MANAGER (with ‘star’ feature for speedily searching for favourites — whether user- created or one of the trademark Rob Papen professionally-programmed presets presented in their thousands). Speaking of which, all of the original SubBoomBass (sometimes) bass-heavy presets are all present and accounted for, so SubBoomBass 2 can capably boom and shake-shake-shake the room with the very best — bigger and better than its predecessor, possibly!

SubBoomBass 2 allows anyone to creatively compliment any style of contemporary music at any time — whether working on video game or film scores, or anything in between and beyond. After all, fellow high-flying Dutchman and original SubBoomBass supporter Tom Holkenberg (a.k.a. Junkie XL) started out on the dance floor, fraternising with worldwide chart positions, and ended up on the big screen as a hotshot Hollywood film scorer. Similarly, SubBoomBass 2 is surely set to become another success story for Rob Papen. Anything is possible... just ask Junkie XL!

SubBoomBass 2 can be purchased in a boxed edition — as an AAX (32-/64-bit), AU (32-/64-bit), VST (32-/64-bit) compatible audio software plug-in for Mac OS X (10.6 or higher) and Windows (Vista, 7, 8, and 10) — from authorised Rob Papen dealers worldwide or as a download directly from Rob Papen for €99.00 EUR/$99.00 USD from here: https://www.robpapen.com/buy-subboombass-2.html (Owners of SubBoomBass are eligible to upgrade to SubBoomBass 2 for €39.00 EUR/$39.00 USD, while SubBoomBass 2 is included in eXplorer4, the latest incarnation of Rob Papen’s all-encompassing software bundle, so owners of eXplorer4 can download the SubBoomBass 2 installer for free.)"
