Animated Tricillator Northern Light Modular Model 2AT Full Technical Overview

video upload by Kent

"The Covid Kid is back with his 90th video, 30 minutes in length(!), and 3rd round of Covid. I seem to only find time to make videos when I have some downtime due to Covid. Please excuse my flagging voice.

00:10 start of Audio Demos
07:39 start of Technical Overview and Features
08:07 AS3340 & AS3345 chips
08:20 What the 2AT isn't: not e-series and not based upon Buchla designs
09:38 The 4 main sections of the module
09:53 Common Control (Master Pitch in and offset knob)
10:33 Mix Out section with optical clipping
11:22 LFO Swarm based upon their Electric Dompteur h-seriers 1/2 space module. Genius!
13:35 LFO Swarm waveforms
14:15 the weird LFO shapes
15:05 8 octave range with rotary switch
16:08 mixer per oscillator
16:28 3 varieties of sub-octaves
17:39 FM normalling and routing
18:16 0-10V properly biased modulation outs on banana jacks

28:00 3 Operator FM with 223e arpeggiator
29:21 Adding clocked LFOs and VCA mixing
30:14 fini!

The 2AT is an incredibly feature rich module:
It tracks over 8 octaves
3 oscillators with four waveforms each. Each waveform has an individual mix level control via knob and banana jack
Rotary switch for selecting the octaves
3-stage sub oscillator
Selectable Waveforum Mod CV (0-10V) out
Scalable FM and CV control
Full PWM control
Attenuverters wisely employed where they make sense
FM inputs normalled to the outputs of anther oscillator and the routing can be changed on the back
Sync I/O via shorting bars
Each oscillator's waveform outputs are mixed internally and are present at the MIX OUT if no single out is used
Optical clipping stages are present at each OSC, and again at the Mix Out stage

Clocked or Free-Running Swarm LFO
The 8 frequencies (the 8 outputs) can be offset in phase or frequency, always based on the master frequency.
It can go down to 0 Hz and freeze the levels at their present state
Each output has its own attenuator

Kodamo MASK1 // Proudly Digital & Uniquely Powerful

video upload by Jorb

"After my time with it, and the sort of reflection I get to find while editing, I think the strongest appeal of this synthesizer is finding identifiably digital sounds without any of the complex workflow of FM or wavetables, with just enough options past the oscillator shapes to feel like its not a 'dishonest' approach to those sounds.

You can find characteristically digital sounds, with the rest of the architecture being familiar / subtractive and it almost feels like I cheated my way to a modern man's PPG. Delightful.

HUGE THING that ended up cut, the manual is super good, really serious shoutout. Color prints, full pages, bound nicely, the whole thing. Love it.

Also I managed to also cut any take where I mentioned Roland's draw and chop oscillator options, which could be seen as a simplified bit masking. But rest assured I made the connection , don't comment like I didn't smh please

0:00 Intro
2:02 Hands on
4:25 Bitmasking Intro
8:23 Mid-demo Overview
10:01 Sound Design Begins
12:38 Play Modes
16:22 Splits / Layers
18:11 Randomized Patches (crazy good)

1969: What Is ELECTRONIC MUSIC? | Workshop | Radiophonic Workshop | BBC Archive

video upload by BBC Archive

Be sure to check out 3:59 on. I won't give it away, but it's interesting they had the same views back then. Note 7:33 for a glimpse of what would come. Finally also see this post for Daphne Oram's Oramics and her Bird of Parallax. See the Oramics label for more.

"What is electronic music? How is it produced?

Desmond Briscoe - the head of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop - enlists the help of Daphne Oram, David Cain and John Baker to explain the fundamentals of synthesised sound.

This clip is from Workshop: The Same Trade As Mozart, originally broadcast 3 August, 1969.

You have now entered the BBC Archive, a time machine that will transport you back to the golden age of tv to educate, entertain and enlighten you with classic tv clips from the BBC vaults."

Digitakt Machines // OS 1.50 Upgrade

video upload by Elektron

"Machines. The Digitakt way.

As found in Octatrack, Model:Cycles or Syntakt, the concept of Machines has now also reached Digitakt.

There are now several new ways to play back your sweet samples. This new OS 1.50 Upgrade brings four different Machines, all with their own different flavor. Repitch for automatic classic beat-matching, Werp for a little quirky old-school way of time warping, and Slice - to chop up your audio and placing the pieces back in any order you like. And finally Oneshot, your default Machine for playing your sample forward, backward or looped. Again, again, and again.

To top things up we also added a new way to record your samples. You can now set a fixed number of steps for your recording. And, Sample Rate Reduction that can be inserted before or after the filter. Just as gritty as you like it to be.

Go find out more and download this new tasty OS 1.50 Upgrade here: https://bit.ly/3IFttuq"

Digitakt OS 1.50 Upgrade Overview

"As found in Octatrack, Model:Cycles or Syntakt, the concept of Machines has now also reached Digitakt. In this tutorial, we explore the four Machines - Oneshot, Werp, Repitch, and Slice - that come with the OS 1.50 Upgrade.

We also cover some creative tools that allow you to push Digitakt’s sequencer and samples further. For example, using Trigless Trigs to parameter lock values without re-triggering samples, using random locks in Slice to get new rhythmic ideas, or using Werp to really pull apart samples and turn them into completely new elements."

NEW MACHINES! Digitakt Ginormous update OS 1.50

video upload by Dave Mech

"Another massive update for Digitakt. This time we get 3 new machine types, sample rate reduction, recording length setting and a couple of small yet useful improvements! In this video I go over the major new functions in detail. Enjoy!

PS: After I created this video a small change was made to the OS. On the sampling page the recording length setting is now situated on the right and the AUTO setting shown in this video is renamed to MAX."

100 Noises 03

video upload by zack dagoba

"Here is a patch using the vintage half of my Buchla 100

You are hearing 100% Buchla with nothing else

The patch is trying to mimic a tolling bell, but in a slightly rhythmic way, as the overtones resonate in time with the main clock, being 8th note divisions

The setup uses 2 pairs of sine waves going into 2 Ring Modulators. These are sent to the 102 Stereo Locator, which is used as a VC switch in mono mode and uses an envelope to fade between the ring-modulated tones upon each clock pulse. This sound then goes into the Sharp Cutoff Filter in low pass mode for shaping the sound before going into the Frequency Shifter in the "phaser" mode (ie sending the signal to one half of it, as well as going to one channel of a mixer, then an LFO goes to the other half of the FS, and a clean signal goes to channel 2 of the mixer, and when they are blended correctly, phasing happens in a rather pleasing way)"

New Barton Musical Circuits BMC093 Diode Shaper VCA & BMC092 Sample Release

BMC093 Diode Shaper VCA Demovideo upload by boogdish

"Demonstration/Overview of a new synthesizer module design.
I provide PCBs/Panels for DIY builders and also sell pre-built modules on my site. Visit https://www.bartonmusicalcircuits.com... to get more information on this module. PCBs and fully built modules can be ordered from: https://bartonmusicalcircuits.com/sho..."

This module is a VCA that uses rectified feedback/feedforward to provide waveshaping. Both the feedback/forward knobs can provide positive or negative feedback and the external CV control is an attenuverter. It also includes switchable Zener diode limiters to soften the output when large amounts of positive feedback are used. The module is DC coupled, so it can be used with LFOs, Envelopes and CV sources as well waveforms. The DC coupling also allows for DC offset to be applied to the input which increases harmonic possibilities.
This module is designed for 12V systems, but works with 15V systems with just one resistor change. The documentation gives tips on how to tweak or modify the circuit.

BMC092. Sample Release Demo video upload by boogdish

"This is a demo/overview of a new synthesizer module design. More information (schematics, ordering, etc) can be found at bartonmusicalcircuits.com/samplerelease/"

The Sample Release is a 4 channel bipolar envelope generator module that can also act as a sample-and-hold or track-and-hold. Each channel takes a voltage input, samples it and then that voltage goes to zero volts with it's rate controlled by the release knob. This generates control envelopes that fall when positive voltage inputs are applied and rise when negative voltage inputs are applied. Each channel has a toggle that disables the release function and lets the channel act as a traditional sample-and-hold or track-and-hold. Additionally, a +5V supply is normalized to the voltage input so the module can also be used as a normal release generator
