And the official press release:

"Yamaha MODX Incorporates Flagship Technology into a Lightweight, Affordable Line of Synthesizers

NEW YORK, N.Y. (September 14, 2018) — Yamaha today unveiled the MODX - a line of compact, lightweight, hybrid synthesizers inspired by flagship Yamaha synth technology to offer dynamic, expressive music-making at an affordable price.

This successor to the popular Yamaha MOXF line will be available in three models – MODX6 (61 semi-weighted keys), MODX7 (76 semi-weighted keys) and MODX8 (88 weighted and graded keys) – to fit the needs of synth players, keyboardists and pianists alike.

The power of the MODX offers musicians unlimited potential to create their own unique sound. The MODX sound engine draws on the same technology powering the flagship MONTAGE synth: AWM2 (Advanced Wave Memory 2) sample and synthesis engine plus a pure FM-X (Frequency Modulation) synthesizer modernized for dynamic synthesis and complex sound design. The MODX also incorporates Motion Control, a highly programmable control matrix for dynamic sound interaction. This gives musicians unparalleled ability to direct and manipulate their sound by interacting with their Performances in fine detail.

The MODX expands on the MOXF by offering a wide array of control and workflow elements. Seamless Sound Switching has been introduced in the tradition of MONTAGE to allow switching between Performances without any sound cutoff. MODX has DSP power with up to 13 simultaneous dual insertion effects and 3 system/master effects. MODX polyphony has been increased to 128 notes of stereo AWM2 (sample-based) plus 64 FM-X (Frequency Modulation synthesis.) The control panel now includes four faders, multi-function Super Knob and a touchscreen display.

At the same time, the MODX is housed in a lightweight body that makes it easy to carry to sessions, gigs and rehearsals. Also, like its predecessor, the MODX comes bundled with Steinberg Cubase AI DAW software for creating and producing music on the computer.

Synth players and sound designers will appreciate the deep programmability of Motion Control and the MODX FM-X synth engine. The versatility of the MODX and the wealth of onboard keyboard, synth, brass and strings sounds will appeal to keyboardists needing a wide variety of sounds, and 88 weighted-action keys, designed with the benefit of over 125 years of Yamaha piano craftsmanship and over 40 years of synth innovation, will suit any pianist.
“MODX sets a new standard for mid-range synthesizer sound, control and mobility,” said Nate Tschetter, marketing manager, Yamaha Synthesizers. “With advanced flagship technology in a lightweight, accessible package, MODX excels on stage, in the studio and in a wide array of creative situations.”

Pricing and Availability
The Yamaha MODX6 (MSRP $1,649), MODX7 (MSRP $1,899) and MODX8 (MSRP $2,399) are scheduled to ship September 27.

Double Disting Theremin Jam!

Published on Sep 6, 2018 The Mad Music Machine

"This one's a bit experimental! We use the CV and gates of the Theremins to control E352 and E370 audio envelopes connected to the inputs of the Distings. The Theremin CVs also control the feedback to the B4 algorithm which is configured to output only the delayed signal.

We are planning to build another of these 'Double Disiting Theremin Instruments' to allow groups of children to jam together at our events.

Caitlin has had some great fun jamming with this and along the way has invented the 'crossed- theremin' technique :)"

Building a Eurorack Synthesiser for Kids

Published on Jul 31, 2018 DivKidVideo

"I recently worked alongside Mylar Melodies showcasing and exhibiting modular synths (specifically Eurorack) to children (and some adults / parents) in the Science Tent at Deer Shed festival. Deer Shed is a family friendly festival with a large number of kids and parents and the Science Tent gives them a chance to come and try soldering, make slime, chemistry workshops, build raspberry pi units and come and make music and play on euro rack synthesisers or try out making music on a Ableton with guys from a local Ableton group.

For the event I tried to put together the best Eurorack synthesiser that I could that was a mean little groove box of beats, melodies, bass, FX and some more out there fun stuff. So here's what I used, how I patched it and how it went.

Astro Pi / Tim Peake inspired piece created for the Brighton Modular Meet

Published on Jun 30, 2018 The Mad Music Machine

'We were thrilled to be invited to run a demonstration of the Mad Music Machine at the Brighton Modular Meet.

We thought it would be a good idea to create a patch using waveforms generated from our Astro Pi data with samples we created from the European Space Agency commentary of Tim Peakes flight from Earth to the International Space Station.

We used the Synthesis Technology WaveeEdit programme to create the wavetables which on the E370 are taken from the pattern formed by the humidity data recorded in our experiment. The E352 uses a sample of the engine noise of the Soyuz TMA-19M which on which Tim Peake travelled - this is modulated in cloud mode to give the 'engine' sounds.

As the data was generated on a Raspberry Pi so we thought it would be appropriate to use Sonic Pi for for the sequencing :)

Her Caitlin jams with that patch :)"

Loopop review: KORG Gadget for Nintendo Switch - before you buy

Published on Apr 30, 2018 loopop

"KORG just released their version of Gadget for Nintendo’s Switch gaming console. Gadget for iOS and Mac are powerful workstations for music production and performance. The big question is, how well does Gadget translate to the world of console gaming? After reviewing it in depth, it seems Korg Gadget for Switch has a different goal in mind, at least in my opinion - certainly for this first version just released - and that goal is real-time, multi-person music creation and jamming.

To see if it accomplishes this goal, I tested it live with my daughter, and the result of our first jam session, for better or worse, is included in this clip.

Gadget contains 16 great core “gadgets”- synths and drum machines covering many forms of synthesis, and it sounds fantastic. You can build a song with multiple tracks (instruments) and scenes (e.g. intro, verse, chorus). Different scales, bar lengths and time signatures are supported, and there is copy/paste/undo functionality which means you won’t be wasting much time putting a track together.

The key differentiating feature as I mentioned above is its multiplayer capabilities. There are two multiplayer modes - one where up to four users all share the same screen and work on the same clip, gadget, mix or song at once, and a second split screen mode where each player gets a quarter of the screen to themselves. All players create the same song, but each can work on a different part, view or instrument, in their corner of the screen. You can’t switch between these modes mid song, which would be a nice future addition. An optional 5 minute timer mode helps keep you focused on finishing a track rather than just noodling…

All that said, if you’re looking for a direct port of the iOS version of Gadget for Switch you’re going to be disappointed. Gadget for Switch is a slimmed down version of its bigger siblings and is missing quite a few key features to be considered a complete digital audio workstation. I’m not sure if this lack of certain features is due to limitations of the Switch platform or just limitations of version 1.0, but things like connecting a USB or Bluetooth keyboard or controller, or audio or project export (aside from limited internal sharing), are just not available. If you want to export your song you’ll need to record it via the audio output or HDMI as I did in this clip.

Aside from the connectivity issues above, it seems like on the software side, this first version was optimized for a “TV mode” experience rather than handheld. Much of the touch screen doesn’t work where you’d expect it to - it’s completely inactive on the Song, Mixer and Clip/Piano roll screens, and only partially active in Gadget view. Hopefully this will be addressed in future updates. There are however some interesting motion play gesture controls that are shown in the clip.

So… what’s the bottom line? If you want to use Gadget on your own as music production digital audio workstation, with this first version of Gadget for Switch, you’re better off with their iOS or Mac versions.

Gadget for Switch is optimized for TV-mode using Switch controllers, with multiplayer gameplay in mind. If you’re looking for a fun experience creating songs with other people, Gadget for Switch is the best game in town."

E352 Cloud Mode 'World' Drums

Published on Apr 15, 2018 The Mad Music Machine

"We use the E352 & E370 in Cloud Mode to create some rhythms inspired by some of the sounds we heard at the WOMAD Festival.

The only sound sources in the patch are the E352 and voice 3 of the E370.

We use the pico sequencers to 'tune' the voices but the gates and the patterns are set by the Circadian Rhythms."

4MS STS Peppa Pig tribute! - samples recorded at Horsham Piazza Italia 2018

Published on Apr 10, 2018 The Mad Music Machine

"Last weekend we took the Mad Music Machine to Horsham Piazza Italia. We showed young children how we could sample their voices and gave them the microphone and told them to say anything they liked.

We had some interesting results from the many children (and adults) that took part!

Our favourite moment was when a family with 3 young children created a tune involving 'Peppa Pig' sounds - including of course, some 'oinks'.

Next time we do this we will ensure we can record their creations for them but here Caitlin is recreating their tune with the original voice samples, together with the beats as best as she can remember them.

For a bit of fun I have also added the Peppa Pig melody to the Mother-32 sequencer."

4ms STS and E370 Drum Machine

Published on Mar 23, 2018 The Mad Music Machine

Another tutorial video from synth kid Caitlin!

"We have been invited to take the Mad Music Machine to the Horsham Piazza Italia Festival which features many Italian (and other) high performance cars.

We thought it would be fun to incorporate samples of these cars into our music. Here Caitlin creates a basic drum machine using drum samples in the E370 and cars sounds in the Stereo Triggered Sampler .

The E370 makes for a great drum machine as the drum samples are very are easily tuned and triggered."

E370 & E352 Jam

Published on Feb 25, 2018 The Mad Music Machine

"Caitlin's first full jam with the Synthesis Technology E370 & E352.

The E370 has oscillator one connected to the Roland System-1m which is being used as a filter. Oscillators 2 ,3 & 4 form chords outputted via the E370's onboard mixer.

The E352's 2 outputs are fed to the Mother-32's filer and envelope.

The Mother-32 (along with a Pico Seq) provide the sequencing. MATHS and the Quadra/Quad VCAs the envelopers.

We also use the Hexinverter drums triggered by the 4MS Rotating Clock divider."

Synthesis Technology e370 Chord Mode

Published on Feb 17, 2018 The Mad Music Machine

"A quick experiment with the Synthesis Technology e370 Chord Mode.

The only sound source is the e370 with one oscillator playing a simple bass line, and the remaining oscillators forming Major chords.

We are using our Moog Mother-32 (as a clock only), two Erica Synth Pico Sequencers, the Roland System-1m (as a filter only). Since our last video we have also added an Intellijel Quadra and a Quad VCA to partner the e370.

We next plan to step through the chord table to form progressions using different chord types (rather than just sticking to the Major Chords as we have done here)."

Caitlin's explains her team's Astro Pi Code and jams with waveforms created from historic ISS data.

Published on Jan 28, 2018 The Mad Music Machine

"Team STEAMCademy's Astro Pi code is almost complete and here Caitlin demonstrates how it will (hopefully!) be used to collect data on board the International Space Station.

In a previous video she demonstrated how she can use the data to generate waveforms using the Synthesis Technology Waveedit program, and if successful in the Astro Pi competition she will use it to generate wavetables from this code.

Caitlin then has a quick jam with the Moog Mother-32, Roland System-1m and the e352 Cloud Terrarium using wavetables she has previously generated from historic ISS data."
