Retrokits Boss DR-110 MIDI Modification (RK-110)

Published on Jan 30, 2020 Retrokits

"A quick visual guide for building in the Retrokits RK110 into the BOSS DR110 drumcomputer.

Below an excerpt from the RK110 manual:

RK-110 SETUP MODE
Once the RK-110 is built in, it will auto-slave the internal sequencer to a MIDI clock and has mapped the DR-110 in a 'General MIDI Drum mode'-fashion. This means a standard note mapping, receiving on MIDI Channel 10:

Radikal Technologies Spectralis OS 104K Update

Notes pulled via sequecner.de. Available on the Radikal Technologies website.
"P Fix: Shift-State-LED sometimes reset on Mapping Changes
-P Mod: QuickSound now regular “Num Button Mode” (no longer Overlay Function)
-P Fix: MiniKeyboard does not trigger Drums Part (bug introduced with Arpeggiator)
-P New: StepEdit, Function+10..13 selects resolution 1/12..1/32
-P Mod: Keys outside Transpose-Window forwarded to the Synth as usual
-P Mod: FX Edit Page removed from Song Menu
-P Mod: Mixer Modes can be left using EXIT
-P Mod: Pattern Transpose Re-Implemented. Transpose functionality is now a member
of the Part group and reachable using Shift+Play. Transpose mode is indicated
by a blinking PLAY Led. Transpose mapping is similar to the mini keybed:
Keys 1-12 allow up-transpose within one octave. Key 14 and 16 may transpose
by octaves down and up. A continuous led indicates transpose by a single octave,
blinking represents transpose by more than one octave. Key 15 reverts to the
nominal octave (not the note offset within the octave).
Please note that Key 13 represents a transpose by one octave which is interpreted
to be within the nominal octave so transposition Leds are still off. However,
Key 15 will reset such a transpose back to zero.
-Q New: Randomize uses number buttons to directly randomize a sound for a
specific part.
-Q Mod: Changed several Menu Titles
-Q Fix: Following Menus now displays Device (like OSC1-4) instead of Parameter Names (like 4xGlide):
- Glide-Menu
- VCO Pitchbend Range
- LFO Wave Menu
- LFO Modulation Depth
- LFO Rate Menu
- 24dB: Lin/Exp FM
- Multimode: Exp FM
-Q Mod: DSynth: Unisono/Detune removed from Menu for all Drum Parts
-Q Fix: Selecting Drums Part does not close DSP Wave Menu
-Q Mod: DSynth: Disabled LFO EG Submenu (for now)
-Q Mod: ASynth: Disabled VCO Fine Tune Modulation Menu (for now)
-R Mod: Randomize allows Selection of SubCategory and selective update of waveform/filter
-S Mod: Randomize Keep/Recall preserves SubCategory selection
-T Mod: Randomize uses Encoder 1-16 instead of Key 1-16 to directly randomize a Part
-T Mod: Mini Keyboard follows external Part Selection
-W Mod: Sequencer and digital Sound Engine stopped while USB is connected.
-Y Mod: Reworked Randomize Mode:
- Grouped with PartSelect/PartPlay
- Step-Encoder select Part (press) and Category (rotate)
- NumButtons select Part and randomizes a sound
- Last settings are saved in INI
-Z Mod: Groove-Edit Step/Accent+Num10..13 directly changes line resolution 1
-B Mod: Speedup on Channel Enable Ramp (faster Mute/Solo).
-B Fix: Rebuilt DSP Code for Spectralis1 (fixes USB unplug-detection).
-C Fix: Shift-Led sometimes remains lit after disconnecting USB.
-D New: Format and Factory-Image-Restore re-implemented for LBA Devices (CF-Flash)
-D Mod: All MIDI Controllers are explicitly reset on Stop, not only automated controllers.
-D Mod: Simultaneous Realtime Recording of up to 8 Controllers
-D Fix: Increased Command Timeout for SD-Cards, to get slower Types detected correctly.
-E New: MasterVolume displays current value on Turn&Push
-E New: MuteMode selectable per Part between Voice and Trigger (Motif-Menu and PartMute + ShiftNumButton)
-F Fix: Pending automated Controller will be reset on Pattern Swap.
-G Fix: Recorded depth of modulation on analog part is doubled.
-G Mod: Changed internal definition of Synth Parameters
-G Mod: Changed Naming in Target Selection Popup Menu for digital Parts
-H Mod: Huge rework to make recordable encoders happen, but this is still not finished yet. One effect will be noticeable though, that during recording most controls on the surface seem to be unresponsive, and the few already working (only within the hybrid synth) were reset when recording finishes. This is intended behaviour in that form, that encoders
should be recorded and no longer change the sound stored within the pattern.
-I Mod: Non-recordable encoders fall back to their default processing. Otherwise some required display encoders were also captured.
-I Fix: Recording Quantization defaults to 1/24
-J Fix: Sustain Pedal not working
-K Fix: Target Selection for Digital Parts displays ASyn2/ASyn3/DSyn1 instead of DSyn1/DSyn2/DSyn3
-K Mod: Default Reverse Point for empty Pattern is set to G8 (was C-3)
-K Fix: Relocated Mixer UI above Recording UI to allow FX Pages to be opened without abort recording."

#korgmonotron #korgmonotrondemo KORG Monotron - Benjamin LAZZARUS

Published on Mar 15, 2019 Benjamin LAZZARUS

"This track is only made with sounds coming from the KORG Monotron
Video: 'Chronos' - Ron Fricke"

Yes, the drums as well. via Benjamin LAZZARUS in the comments for the video:

"Yes the drum too, with a little trick for the 'noise' I used the exit breath (which is strong enough on the monotron) to accentuate the highlights, and I cut the same breath of exit to the eighth to get a charley. The clap with the very fast lfo that makes a kind of "fllleu", and the kick with the filter reso pushed to the bottom. But otherwise yes I love more and more use very basic machines see very cheap!"

Impressive.

Radikal Technologies Spectralis Hybrid Synthesizer

via this auction
As always, via the auction description: "The synth has a tiny problem where is asks for the date/time on boot it will not remember the date/time upon reboot. You can skip this by pressing the exit button on boot. I contacted Radikal Technologies about this and they replied that its probably a goldcap capacitor that feeds the clock. This goldcap capacitor is only used for the clock and does not affect operation of the synth. It is just used for file dating created/modified files in the memory and possibly as a random number generator seed for the Randomizer. Your data will NOT be lost on reboot. Your saved projects and saved sounds will NOT be lost on reboot. The ONLY thing that is lost is date/time... again this does not affect the synth operation unless you want to use this as a beastly clock which I don't recommend, then you will notice that the UI is not built for clock operation!

The synth has also been updated to the latest firmware available from Radikal Technologies Firmware 104k be sure to check there website for updates as they still update this device. This firmware is a complete firmware with all features working not like the factory 97L firmware which still had some of the features being developed."

2020/09 - Synth Programmer for Waldorf Microwave Demo

Stereoping

"Finally - the demo for the Stereoping Microwave Programmer - over 12 minutes full of short clips and subtitles - hopefully useful somehow. Up to 3:50 the sound only contains a non-related background music, the shown content did not have any valuable sound.

0:06 PREFS - Entering the Programmers PREFS mode, making changes to internal settings, automatic saving on exit
0:29 PATCH MODE - Entering PATCH mode, synchronisation of parameter data, stepping up/down through programs. Moving pots, display shows new and old value (in brackets), COMPARE and PEEK function
1:32 PARAMETER GROUPS - layout of Programmer's parameters in groups. Editing hidden parameters. WAVETABLE always available on encoder 4, solution for accessing the many WAVE ENV LEVELS/TIMES values with only 6 pots.
2:47 MODULATION MODE - how to edit the Microwave's modulation slots (normal and complex ones). Two dedicated pots for quickly setting VALUEs or ZEROing them out. Demoing the TEMP mode for direct change of modulation values through pots.
3:50 - EDITING SESSION, from here on the shown clips have sound. Starting with an INIT sound, the program is shaped into something nicer over 2 and 1/2 minute.
6:38 - RANDOMIZER - creating several sounds while changing the randomizers parameters. (Mind the volume, some aggressive sounds here)
8:12 - CHORD MEMO - playing with the 5 CHORD slots. Entering Chord SETUP to demo chord learning and STRUM.
9:30 - playing a pattern from a DAW, shaping a bass sound by Control Change messges making use of the Programmer's CC-to-SysEx translator

10:26 - MULTI MODE - finally a brief demo for the Programmer's MULTI mode. Please check the Programmer's PDF manual for details here.

MIDI Designer layout for Crumar Bit 01 w/ Tauntek Mod

via MIDI Designer

"With the great firmware update by Bob Grieb (tauntek.com) it's finally possible to control all parameters of a Crumar Bit 01 via MIDI. This MIDI Designer layout for the iPad has been tested with a Crumar Bit 01, but should in theory also work with a Bit 99 and to some degree also with a Bit One. Since I only have a Bit 01 here, I couldn't test it myself, but comparing the CC maps of the three synths they look basically compatible (Bit 99 does not have Detune / Noise though, but CC's are otherwise identical).

Note: To use this layout please ensure your device is in Lower, Edit (Address) mode. CC's are only accepted in this mode. Please also note that you will exit this mode when changing a program (e.g. via the Up/Down steppers in this layout). So, after changing a program you'll need to manually enter the Lower, Edit (Address) mode again."

Akai MPC1000 JJOS2XL Grid Edit Demo

YouTube via FatSynthDude
"Just a quick little demo I made for one of the GearSlutz members. Sorry about the fact that I used the camera's audio, but I'm gelatinous and lethargic.

So anyway, this is just a demonstration of the grid edit mode in JJOS2XL. The guy asking about it was wanting to dismiss it because in JJOS1, it's not quite x0x-like, and you have to program in while the pattern is stopped, otherwise it's just realtime step input with a pretty GUI when you're playing the pattern. He's actually right, and this is included in the later versions of JJOS as well, however, JJ introduced into a later version (not sure if it was in JJOS2 as I haven't spent much time with it) an extra layer to the grid edit to where you can look at one drum part a bar at a time and edit it while it's playing, sort of x0x-style. While the basics of this are a little more tedious than on a 909 because you can't just reach over and switch on/off steps, there are little caveats that make it a little faster (selecting more than one slot at a time) and actually are a little more creatively implemented (instead of simple on/off, each slot is set up to where you input the velocity.)

The vid starts with grid editing of my 522 as a contrast just to show how that works. I then dive into the extra editing mode and show how that works followed by a simple demonstration of the new (and far improved if I might say so myself) version of the copy and paste function. Next I demonstrate how the grid editing for a track designated as 'MIDI' works as well as track duration adjustment. Then, by switching the track to 'drum' mode, I can go into regular grid editing procedures as well as the other layer of sequence editing. As you can see (and this is something I only just found out myself while doing this video) the duration of each note and note shifting can be adjusted by moving down beneath the velocity section. Shifting notes is as simple as pressing a new pad, and then to jump over to a new bar, you just exit the editing mode (wish I had a name for that section) shuffle the marker over to the next bar, and then shift-view again.

Personally, I'm a big fan of JJOS in general, and 2XL adds a ton of improvements to make things even easier and more creative for song creation. For people who own an Akai MPC1000, upgrading to JJOS is very much worth it as, like many others, I feel that Akai's OS's are lacking and somewhat crippled because of their limitations. For people who don't have an MPC, I believe this to be very much worth looking into as a sequencer.

Sorry the execution of this video is a little clunky, but I've only just upgraded to 2XL a couple days ago and haven't quite yet dived in to the system to learn all of its features. (In fact, I actually stumbled on this screen by accident.)"

DSC - DIGITAL SOUND CHIPS OPUS MAX BOARD

DSC - DIGITAL SOUND CHIPS

From the creators of the Bluebox synthesizer comes a new project for DIYers. Currently on Kickstarter here.

"A short introduction to the OPUS MAX BOARD music computer and development board for making music gear with the STM32H750 micro controller. https://digitalsoundchips.com It will come with a profession grade synthesizer and audio effects unit to loop sounds through the board externally. And with information on how to make your own music gear like synthesizers and audio effect units."

"Back in 2011 the worlds smallest synthesizer DSC Bluebox was made, but vent by unnoticed. This time Digital Soundchips that made the synthesizer is back, and want to solve the problems that they once went through for you and others.

Now we a ready to present a single-board computer for audio plugins and music gear. And with one profession grade synthesizer plugin, and a multi effects unit to loop audio through. That uses a open plugin standard with plugins on microSD card.

Imagine making professional music hardware gear, based on a super simple audio plugin format. And develop music gear that can use several plugins simultaneously.

We want to make a pre-configured scalable solution, so you can start writing your audio code and run ready-made plugins. And lower the development time for new music gear from years or month's, to weeks.

Lets make it faster and fun to develop commercially viable professional music gear.

Gotharman Little deFormer Granular Workstation

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Granular workstation with sampler, synth, effects processor and sequencer

Gotharman's Little deFormer combines a granular effects processor with special effects like TimeStretcher, StepGranulator and PitchShaper and more usual effects like Reverb, delay, distortion, compressor, filters and bit manipulation, with some special parameters, with a 100 minutes sampler, a synth and a step sequencer. A MIDI Note Randomizer is also included.

Both the samplings and external gear, connected to it's 2 audio input can be effected. A complete list of effects can be found in the specs section below. Watch and hear Little deFormer in action, in the video's section. I have planned to use the Little deFormer as a platform for engineering new effects, so additional effects will be added now and then, which will be available as free downloads on this site. These updates will be available as MIDI sysex files in".syx" format, and you will need a program like MidiOx to download these to Little deFormer.

The 4note polyphonic sampler makes it possible to record your own samplings directly from the 2 audio inputs, or resample it's audio output. Samplings are stored in FLASH RAM for instant recall, without any loading times. Up to 100 minutes/999 samplings can be kept. Start and end points can be changed in realtime and modulated, and it also has functions like AutoChop, for a conveniant and easy way to cut up long samplings. Each sampling has it's own Phaze effect and filter with LPF, LFP2, BPF, BPF8, HPF, ADD, BEF, BASS, LOFI and SHAPER modes, and a filter mix parameter. It is also possible to adjust the filter response, to create filter types, that have never been heard before. The Little deFormer comes loaded with samplings of other Gotharman gear. Instead of samplings, it is also possible to use Little deFormers buildin oscillators for sound generation. They can morph from sinewave to triangle to sawtooth to squarewave to noise. Pulsewidth modulation is possible on all waveforms.

Introducing TZM Creative Lab's Motus – Creative Motion Enhancer

Motus – Creative Motion Enhancer from TZM Creative Lab on Vimeo.

"Motus allows users to literally play music in the air. No keys, buttons or knobs. While holding Motus in hand, you can play the note and at the same time change its timbre by using different motion gestures."

See https://motusmotus.com for additional details including their crowdfunding campaign for the Motus.

The following is pulled from their press release where you'll find additional pics:

"Bow without strings, play synths without pressing the keys. An exciting and simple, yet intelligent wireless musical instrument converts motion gestures to sounds

TZM Creative Lab introduces their first product, Motus – Creative Motion Enhancer. A wireless device converting motion to sound, a creative tool for professional musicians, dancers and artists, an intelligent toy for kids and grown-ups. Available on crowdfunding campaign now, for less than $100.

Motus is a mobile wireless device that turns motion to sound. In human’s language, it allows users to literally play music in the air. No keys, buttons or knobs. While holding Motus in hand, user can play the note and at the same time change it’s timbre by using different motion gestures. Instead of defining single way to play Motus, we simply offer different interaction rules. While loading a different Motus instrument, you’re redefining what it will be – shaker, air drums, violin or something else. Use each instrument just as you would in reality. Motus technology tracks user’s free movements, extracts the most important motion features (e.g. velocity, dynamics, displacement) and maps them to different sounds. It can be a real-time generated sounds, prerecorded material or even sound and light effects. The size of Motus is optimal for easy handling and excellent control.

Motus technology tracks user’s free movements, extracts the most important motion features and maps them to different sounds.

New possibilities in music
Music

“By developing Motus we are keen to engage more people to explore new possibilities of being creative. It started as a tool that expands musical performance, however later we saw it has very broad use cases, e.g. dance, performing arts, or just having fun for people that have no connection with music at all. Anyone who is willing to experiment with digital sound is hindered by the process. Therefore, we did reverse the whole thing and made it approachable in a simple and exciting way, by using motion as a natural input into digital sound synthesis. The space around you becomes a touchless surface, a canvas you can interact with and explore. Motion with Motus turns the air into a keyboard, fret board, djembe skin, drum pads, violin bow, etc. The movement is a key to play and experiment with sound in real-time whether during casual time outdoors or on stage.” – said Mindaugas Badokas founder of TZM Creative Lab. “Motus is also, in part, about community. We seek to empower motion to open up more possibilities of creativity in sound exploration and gather the whole community which keeps that alive. Where anyone can take part from professional musicians to dancers, from grown-ups to kids (even 30 years-old kids).”

Motion with Motus turns the air into a keyboard, fret board, djembe skin, drum pads, violin bow, etc. The movement is a key to play and experiment with sound in real-time.

Three different Motus versions

Motus Classic is out-of-the-box device and can be explored instantly by anyone. It provides full Motus experience, however it should not be used for professional applications.

Motus Pro is made for professional performers, it comes with an external Bridg receiver and precision sensors, its connectivity rage is up to 30 meters and possibility to connect up to 12 devices simultaneously. It is a perfect fit for using on stage and demanding tasks of any performance.

Motus Hacker is offered for the adventurous DIY enthusiasts seeking to make their own customized device, it comes without usual body and each part has to be soldered together by the user. Depending on added elements it may be used on stage, however this is highly variable, therefore it is not recommended for professional application but more for the experimentalists.

Connectivity
Motus comes together with its software, where users are able to select Motus instruments and play them instantly. It as well can be used as a controller with any DAW of choice—it is compatible with MIDI, OSC and ReWire. Ableton Live users will be provided with M4L device to make the set-up easier. Max users will be offered a pack of externals and abstractions.

In contemporary dance scene for 2 years
Usually dancer follows the music and technicians follows the dancer to implement the image and audible atmosphere of the show. Motus enables dancers to directly control and improvise with sound, live visuals or lighting. Dance troupe Aura has been using Motus prototype for the past three seasons in the play “Make a Switch from me”, which was premiered in Italy, Lithuania and Poland. Composer found Motus being a versatile tool. “Motus helps to communicate message faster and gives an opportunity to expand your fantasy but still keep the audience in it.”, explained Antanas Jasenka, Composer.

Motus not only provided an immersive experience for the audience but as well for the dancers. Francesco Dalmasso, dancer at Aura Dance Theatre said “You have really close connection that you’re actually creating the choreography yourself and at the same time creating the music, sounds, so you’re both – choreographer and composer and a dancer. It’s very rich.”

Dance troupe Aura has been using Motus prototype for the past three seasons in the play “Make a Switch from me”

Coolgarden – the app store for Motus
TZM Creative Lab will be opening a standardized platform, Coolgarden – app store for Motus. Coolgarden is a place where Motus users will be able to find all Motus instruments and creative applications. Therefore, developers are invited to develop Motus instruments and offer them for Motus users through Coolgarden. Developers can offer everything from synths, audio effects, visual generators or interactive games which can be monetized or free for users.

Embedding latest technologies
In the last years scientific approaches to human-computer interfaces and interactions for musical performance gained increasing attention from scholars. Some of the reasons for this are computational speed progress and microcontrollers price drop, which have opened new possibilities in the realm of real-time musical interactions. Motus is an outcome of many experiments and scientific endeavors. We’re bringing cutting edge technologies straight to the user. By doing this we can exit alpha stage faster and implement exciting features found only in scientific papers and research facilities.

Available on crowdfunding
Motus was launched on a self-starter crowdfunding campaign on 21th of October. The company seeks to reach its crowdfunding goal of $28,000 in 30-day period until the 20th of November. During a campaign Motus devices are offered for an introductory price starting from $80. First supporters will be able to purchase a limited number of devices for even more discounted price. The collected funds will be used for securing first batch of production: finalizing the product, setting up manufacturing and future development."

Buchla 200e and Serge talk nicely to each other

via Bakis of Parallel Worlds. BTW, Ian Boddy & Parallel Worlds - Exit Strategy [announced here] comes out on May 31st. You can check it out here [Facebook here].

"hi all,

started working on some scapes for a new collab of mine recently and finally patched the Buchla 200e with the Serge.
my findings:

as a cv-source and for cv attenuation/mixing/offseting, Serge works really nice with the Buchla. i have lots of attenuators and cv processors in my Serge, so i use them with Buchla patches as well. they work fine!

Serge gates and triggers work fine triggering Buchla 281e, but you need to mult a serge gate/trigger into 2 inputs of a cv-processor (or 'dual processor' or 'Mix pro' or 'scale processor') AND add a little bit of voltage offset to the total. i guess that means that the serge gate/trigger then has a voltage level of around 12 volts. but that is the only way for the 281e to be triggered. but it works!

still have not tried audio between the two beasts, as the audio level in Buchla, being around 1 volt pp, is much lower than the Serge audio levels... when i have new findings regarding that issue will let you know.

so, for now, the verdict is that Serge and Buchla 200e talk really fine in terms of cv/gate/trigger's!"

MT25d DIY Synth Making of the Monotribe Multiple Mod Feat Volca Keys

Published on Apr 23, 2014 Arrayzable·23 videos

"Here are some more pictures and video bits of the making of my DIY MT25d - Monotribe synth.
It features a new live played track called MONOFUNKALIZE with assistance from a very polyfunky sequenced Volca Keys. The Keys audio is going through the Monotribe filter, so the sound of the Volca Keys is only audible when notes are being played on the MT25d

I'm not all satisfied with the sound quality, so I'll have to look into my work method.

Have fun watching!
