"THE MODULATION CONSTRUCTION SET

ASR envelope, complex 6-stage envelope, LFO, 4-step sequence or switched LFO: Stages can be any kind of modulation. Not because all these behaviors have been pre-programmed in the module, but because it allows you to describe your own modulations in terms of basic operations: ramp from one voltage to another, hold a voltage at a set level, wait for a trigger and slew. With or without looping.

Whether you need one complex envelope, or several simpler modulations, Stages reconfigures itself according to which of its gate inputs are patched. There is always a role for it in your patch.

THAT’S IT

Really, there isn’t more to the story.

Self-generating chiptunes? Very weird LFO shapes? Random gate delay? Stages probably does strange and wonderful things when patched in a certain way.

Flexible input/output layout

The module detects the presence of jacks on its gate inputs to group its segments: whether it is configured as a complex 6-stage envelope, or 6 individual envelopes, or 3+3, 2+4... depends simply on how you patch it. Dummy patch cables might come handy!

When used as a multi-segment envelope, a segment activation signal is produced on all secondary outputs - for example to trigger an external event when an ADSR envelope enters its decay, sustain or release stages.

In case more than 6 segments are required, up to six modules can be chained together thanks to a connector at the back of the module.

Three segment types:

Ramp segments go from one voltage to another, in a CV-controlled amount of time, with an adjustable curve (accelerating, uniform, decelerating). They are the building block used for the attack, decay or release segments in envelopes... or for LFOs.

Hold segments stay at a constant (but CV-controllable) voltage for a programmable amount of time. They serve as the sustain or hold segments in envelopes.

Step segments glide to a target (CV-controllable) voltage, then stay at this voltage for a certain amount of time until a trigger is received. They are the main ingredient for step sequences, but also for building sequential switches or a sample-and hold.

Looping

A segment, or a group of segments, can loop on itself: if the last segment of the envelope is included in the loop, the loop lasts forever. Otherwise, the loop remains active while the gate is high, then continues past the last segment of the loop. These two behaviors allow the creation of self-looping envelopes
(LFOs), or the sustain stage of a good old ADSR envelope!

Single segment processing

Even when they aren’t part of any group and don’t receive any gate or trigger signals, individual segments can perform interesting functions: Ramp can loop on itself and turn into an LFO, Hold can delay a CV and Step can slew it.

Now patch a trigger signal: the self-looping Ramp turns into a tempo-synced LFO, the Hold segment becomes a pulse generator, the Step segment a sample-and-hold.

Width: 14HP
Max Depth: 25MM
Features
CV output: from 0V to +8V. A negative CV down to -8V can be generated by a Hold or Step segment if this segment is CV modulated.
Segment duration from 1ms to 16s.
All inputs: 100k impedance, DC to 2kHz.
31.25kHz refresh rate.
16-bit CV capture, 14-bit CV generation with accurate software calibration. Error below 2mV."

Mutable Instruments Stages - Easter Egg - Harmonic Oscillator - Full Accompaniment

Published on Dec 12, 2018 isvisible isinvisible

"The Mutable Instruments Stages has a fantastic Easter Egg, a Harmonic Oscillator.
There's no secret button combo or anything like that to remember, just use the provided cable that came with it and join the two sets of 3 pins on the back of the module.

I've made another video of this patch, but just using the Stages and doing a quick demo, here: [below]

Arpeggio melody: Mutable Instruments Stages
Single high notes: Mutable Instruments Braids
Drums: Simmons SDS 8
Percussion: Folktek Matter
Bassline: Livewire AFG"

Mutable Instruments Stages - Easter Egg - Harmonic Oscillator - Quick Demo

"Patch notes for this quick demo:
CV: Koma Komplex Sequencer
Gates/Triggers: The first 3 inputs from the left are steady triggers from an ALM Pamela's Workout.
The last 3 inputs are from an Iron Ether Pithoprakta which has it's looping turned on and off to create random, then locked in patterns.

There's a bit of clipping in the video caused by me having the input to the camera turned up a touch too much. Div."

Mutable Instruments Plaits, Marbles & Stages Self-Patched Modular Beta Testing Beats

Published on Apr 14, 2018 mylarmelodies

"This is a little weird sound experiment (light on melodies, high on mylar - skip to 6:10 for more melodicness) I recorded while beta-testing the new Mutable Instruments Plaits, Marbles and Stages, which I received all at once. When I put them all together in the case, I was struck by something: These three new modules, perhaps with the addition of a Clouds for effects and some utilities/VCAs like Blinds and Veils, are in effect like having a complete little Mutable 'Music Easel', in just three core modules.

This is especially because of the way that Plaits makes it so easy to switch modes, so that on a per-step basis it'll make a different sound - it can fill out the sound spectrum far more than it seems it has any right to. The ensemble is incredibly capable and flexible, and an amazing thing to have if you're interested in the whole 'generative' thing.

I was very struck by the elegance of what Olivier has achieved, especially with Stages, and look forward to getting to know these better. I'm going to be using them in my live system, but I wish in a way I had another set I could just put in a small system, something self-contained and fixed, to focus on and explore.

For more, I recommend Lightbath's Loom series which explores these (and the idea of building a system out of them!)"

Chase Bliss Habit Overview and Demo with Eurorack and CV Expression

video upload by Patchwerks

"In this video Karl from Patchwerks gives an in-depth overview of the Chase Bliss Habit with help from Mutable Instruments Plaits and Mutable Instruments Stages. Demonstration includes examples of modulation via a modular synthesizer.

Habit is a delay with a memory. It lets you break away from the present moment and create echoes of the past instead. Or both at once. It does this by recording every sound that goes into the pedal, so you can revisit them later. You can collect sounds you made 2 minutes ago and turn them into loops, or harmonize along with old playing, or build impossible echo patterns.

It’s an effect that can become an instrument at any time, an evolving paint-splatter of everything you do. A musical sketchpad.

Or it could just be a fun delay:
-60 seconds of delay time
-Modifiers
-Multi-tap
-Looping

Record free-form songs right in the pedal, navigate through a whole performance with the turn of a knob, and yes, make echoes.

"Anushri is the new mono alog synth from mutable-instruments.net and it's rule!!"

I'm not seeing any additional info on Mutable Instruments at the time of this post.

Update via via Renegade Rhythms in the comments. via Mutable Instruments:

"Mutable Instruments Anushri – a cheerful analog synth (that doesn’t suck at drums too)

Analog synthesis

Analog VCO with saw and pulse waveforms, freely mixable.
Optional automatic VCO calibration in software for those who don’t like messing with trimmers.
-1 or -2 octaves sub-oscillator.
Auxiliary square oscillator (DCO) with accurate digital tuning. Can be mixed in the audio path, used as a FM modulator or as a sync master for the VCO (yes, it means “ewwwwwwiowwww” and “wongwong”).
12dB/octave multimode filter, with smooth self-oscillation.
Post-filter overdrive/fuzz circuit.
Linear VCA.

Modulation sources

1 main ADSR envelope routable to pitch, pulse width, cutoff frequency.
1 simple 1-parameter envelope (morphing through various stages, including the shape of the main ADSR, and a rigid “GATE” style envelope) routed to VCA.
Velocity routed to either cutoff frequency or VCA gain.
1 LFO routable to pitch, pulse-width and cutoff frequency ; with 8 waveforms (triangle, square, ascending and descending ramps, S&H, bernouilli process, piecewise linear random process aka “autodubstep”, noise).
1 triangle LFO for vibrato and/or growl.

Arpeggiator and sequencer

Arpeggiator with 4 modes (up, down, up&down, random) ; 1 to 2 octaves ; 6 patterns.
SH-101-style note sequencer with step by step recording, up to 128 notes. Easy recording of pauses, ties, and glides.
Tempo set by internal clock with shuffle, external MIDI clock or external 6/12/24 ppqn trigger.

Digital sound generation of BD / SD / HH with tone control.
Drum sounds can be freely triggered from an external sequencer using MIDI channel 10.

Interface

10 pots and 4 switches for hands-on access to synthesis parameters.
10 “software-pots” for editing modulations / arpeggiator / drum machine settings.
3 dedicated navigation buttons (“modulations”, “arpeggiator / keyboard”, “drum machine”).
3 dedicated sequencer buttons (“record”, “play”, “hold / rest”).

In/out

VCO CV in/out (Note: manual VCO calibration is required for accurate 1V/Oct I/O).
VCF CV in.
VCA CV in.
PWM CV in.
Gate signal in/out (5V level for output).
24, 12 or 6 ppqn clock signal in/out (5V level for output).
Front panel external audio in.
External Audio in.
Drum machine individual out (inserting a jack there removes it from the main mix).
Audio out.
MIDI in/out (thru + arpeggiator and sequencer notes).

Two by Four //Subharmonicon/Mother 32/Plaits/Rings/Tides/Mimeophon/Magneto//

video upload by Aleatoric Machine

"The fun part about this patch is that all of the pitch sequencing comes from the Moog Subharmonicon. Including the bass line. Subharmonicon starts doing its thing with the two four note sequences. It goes through Make Noise Mimeophon to double up the polyrhythm pattern. Mutable Instruments Rings follows the pitch of sequence one, while Mutable Instruments Plaits (in a Rings-ish voice) follows sequence two. Moog Mother 32 samples and holds a pitch from sequence two at random intervals. Both sequences run into Expert Sleepers Disting mk4 in min/max mode. Mutable Instruments Tides and Make Noise STO double up on the base line, which is the min value of the two sequences, periodically switching to the max value (when it sounds like it goes to the 4 chord). The overall mix sequencing is handled by Malekko Voltage Block, with 2x Make Noise Maths controlling the slow fade between settings.

Also starring Intellijel Steppy sequencing Mosaic drum modules, XAOC Zadar and Qu-Bit Chance for modulation, Mutable Instruments Stages for some LFOs, Strymon Magneto on Plaits, and Chase Bliss Mood and Happy Nerding FX Aid on Mother 32."

Marble Jam //Marbles/Subharmonicon/Mother 32/STO/Rings/Tides/Magneto/Maestro/Voltage Block//

video upload by Aleatoric Machine

"I’ve wanted to try this for a while. The two channels from Mutable Instruments Marbles are playing the two channels of Moog Subharmonicon, with a sound that reminds me of a Fender Rhodes, through Strymon Magneto. A couple different clocked LFOs from Acid Rain Maestro cause the pitches from Marbles to keep gravitating back to the tonic, with some jamming in between. Mutable Instruments Rings repeats a single note in a Euclidean rhythm coming from ALM Pamela’s New Workout, but modulating the structure causes the ringing to drift up and down from a fifth to an octave. Moog Mother 32 and Make Noise STO double on the bass line. When the melody finally comes it, it is Mutable Instruments Tides through Chase Bliss Warped Vinyl, Mood, and Dark World. Malekko Voltage Block handles the mix scenes, with Mutable Instruments Stages providing slew in between."

Six Mutable Instruments Stages Chained Together

Published on May 2, 2018 Perfect Circuit Audio

"We heard that you could connect up to six Stages modules from Mutable Instruments, so we had to try it since we just got them in stock. We discovered that the sixth Stages becomes a five note chord oscillator when you do chain six together. We made a few different patches for this video using the stages for oscillators, sequencers, envelopes, lfos and more. The Stages is a versatile module that can do many things, while still being easy to use, since it just has 3 modes and no menus.

"In this video, I go through all the different features of this very deep module from Mutable Instruments, Stages. (Segment Generator from Audible Instruments). This time, most of the patches I build from scratch, and I start with creating LFO's and Step Sequencers, then I go through creating different Envelope Types, and I finish with some other cool things this module can do like S&H and Sequential Switches. There are Time Stamp links below, to all the different parts of the video, and here you can find all the different patches - https://patchstorage.com/mutable-inst...

This Is 52 //Subharmonicon/Mother 32/STO/Plaits/Rings/Mosaic/Mimeophon/Magneto/Stages/Chance/Maths//

video upload by Aleatoric Machine

"Eurorack modular synthesizer performance.
Variations on 3 different 4 note sequences.
Moog Subharmonicon generates the 2 primary rhythmic sequences, running through Strymon Magneto. Sub 1 of the first sequence runs through its own output, then through 2hp MMF and Make Noise Optomix for the rhythmic bass line.
Moog Mother 32 generates the descending drone sequence, which is doubled by Make Noise STO tuned up an octave, both run through Chase Bliss Mood, tuned up a fifth.
Mutable Instruments Rings follows the pitch of the descending sequence, with a bouncing ball rhythmic pattern generated by Make Noise Maths and Function, then run through Make Noise Mimeophon. The drifting harmonic tone on top (unison, +5, +12) is the result of modulating the structure of the Rings sound.
Mutable Instruments Plaits chimes the fifth at the beginning of every 8 bars, as well as being trigger by the end of rise on the Function.
Drums are coming from Mosaic Bass, Snare & Hi-Hat modules, sequenced by Intellijel Steppy 1U. Decay on Hi-Hat is a 7 step pattern generated by Mutable Instruments Stages.
The volume and filter cutoff for the drums and rhythmic bass are controlled by Make Noise Pressure Points, with decay slew controlled by a second Make Noise Maths.
Lots of modulation across different parameters is generated by Ornament & Crime and Qu-Bit Chance.
I think that's it."

Stoicism //SIG+/XPO/QPAS/Mimeophon//

video upload by Aleatoric Machine

"A self-playing Eurorack modular synthesizer patch featuring Make Noise’s XPO, QPAS & Mimeophon, and Stochastic Instruments’ Stochastic Inspiration Generator (SIG+). Plus many more modules described below.

Everything you hear in this is coming from a single monophonic sequence from the SIG+ and a single Make Noise XPO. I’m pretty amazed by how much variety of tone and texture can come from this single oscillator, all at the same time. The different waveform outputs are each running through their own VCAs, filters, triggers, and effects, but the melodic content is all the same. I’ll go through the sequencing in a minute, but first I’m going to focus on the audio signal paths.

Overall, the XPO’s L & R modulation are controlled by a triangle LFO coming from Acid Rain’s Maestro.

The first output is the stereo square wave, which goes through QPAS and Mimeophon, then into the mixer. QPAS’s L & R rotation and Q are modulated by two different smooth random waves from ALM’s Pamela’s Pro Workout. Mimeophon’s repeats are modulated by a smooth random wave coming from Maestro. This voice is triggered by a bouncing ball coming from Make Noise’s Maths.

The second output is the mono triangle wave, which first goes through an Intellijel 1U VCA, then uses Intellijel’s 1U pedal I/O to go through a Chase Bliss Mood (repeats tuned up a 5th) and Chase Bliss Dark World, then into the mixer. This voice is triggered by another bouncing ball from another Maths.

The third output is the mono sawtooth wave, which goes through channel one of a Make Noise ModDemix, an Intellijel Morgasmatron (with panning controlled by separate LFOs going to the L & R FM1 inputs - LFO 1 coming from Mutable Instruments’ Tides and LFO 2 coming from Intellijel’s Rubicon 2), then a Happy Nerding FX Aid XL running a flanger algorithm, then into the mixer. This voice is triggered by a repetitive Euclidian rhythm coming from Acid Rain Constellation and Doepfer Dual ADSR.

The last output is the spike wave going through channel two of the ModDemix, a Doepfer Multimode VCF, and Strymon’s Magneto in shift mode, then into the mixer. Magneto’s repeats are modulated by another smooth random wave coming from Maestro. This voice is triggered by a slower Euclidean rhythm coming from Constellation and Make Noise’s Contour.

Each voice goes into Doepfer’s VC Stereo Mixer, which has a built in VCA on each channel. The level of each voice is independently controlled by a separate smooth random wave from Pam, so the mix is constantly evolving. The voltages coming from Pam are further slewed by Mutable Instruments’ Stages, since the smooth random wave from Pam can still have some sharp edges. Then the whole mix goes through a 2HP Verb, with the reverb mix modulated by another smooth random wave from Pam, and finally through Endorphines’ Golden Master, which connects directly to the Intellijel 7U Performance Case’s built in audio outputs.

Now for the melodic content and harmonic structure. This is all driven by Stochastic Instruments’ Stochastic Inspiration Generator (my first patch with it!). This is an incredible module. I won’t go into everything it does, as there are already a couple very helpful videos out there on that, but suffice it to say that it lives up to its name! I’m using multiple channels, each with its own tonality, then cycling through those via an ALM Boss Bow Two switch to determine which channel will control the v/oct pitch of the XPO. The Boss Bow’s channel is control by a sequence coming from another Stages. Channel one is just a low C, to establish the primary key. Channel two randomly selects pitches from a C major chord, with low C in the bass. Channel three selects pitches from an F minor chord, with an occasional 2nd and 4th and a low F in the bass. Channel 4 selects pitches from a D flat major chord, with an occasional 6th and a low D flat in the bass.

I’m not sure if this is indeterminate enough to be considered generative, since the harmonic content is fairly structured, even if the melody, rhythm, and balance of the parts are all random. It’s more, well, aleatoric. I hope you enjoy it (although I realize than if you are into this sort of thing, you are born of a special breed!)."

SUPERBOOTH17 Update

An update on SUPERBOOTH17 set for April 20 - 22 in Berlin:

"Berlin, March 2017: SUPERBOOTH17 at FEZ-Berlin

SUPERBOOTH is the first European trade fair for electronical music instruments. The second annual edition will be held from April 20th to April 22nd 2017, at a new location, FEZ-Berlin.

The timetable for SUPERBOOTH17 is getting tight! And with now more than 160 exhibitors from 22 countries there will be even more to discover at this year’s edition. You can already start to plan your trip through FEZ Berlin on our online floor plan and find your favorite exhibitors. Next to the long- known companies like Yamaha, Korg and Roland we set the focus on small and ambitious companies like Mutable Instruments and Oscillosaurus, who will join Superbooth for the first time.

Next to a whole lot of presentations, performances and concerts we were able to get Gudrun Gut to play some live shows with her project Monika Werkstatt. Within this series there will be daily improvised concerts during the evenings, played on lent instruments from our exhibitors. In general, the program will be more diverse at SUPERBOOTH17 with us trying to contribute to the idea of getting more women into the genre of electronic music and the development of electronic instruments. Therefore we are preparing daily workshops held by women for women.
We will have additional workshops in Konzertsaal 2, which are open to everyone and give you the opportunity to build your own synthesizer module or even whole musical instruments. These workshops will be professionally hosted from 11 a.m. and will be held by exhibiting companies like Moog, 4MS and Leaf Audio. You can buy tickets for the workshops on superbooth.com and you don’t need an additional Trade Fair ticket. Although we absolutely recommend attending at another day to enjoy everything else SUPERBOOTH17 has to offer and we also recommend staying for the evening program and enjoy the special concerts and talks we are planning.

To make sure that there will still be people around in twenty or fifty years from now, knowing what analog electrical musical instruments are and how they are engineered, we set up workshops for school classes to learn something about electronics and how to use synthesizers. The results of these workshops will be presented by the children on one of our stages at 12.20 p.m. every day.

As you can see, there will be a lot to learn and discover next to all the new and exciting instruments and electronics that our exhibitors are presenting. For further details and updates about the program or to buy tickets please visit our website: superbooth.com

Due to the dimensions of the building and safety reasons there is only a limited quantity of 1-Day- Tickets. We recommend ordering these tickets as soon as possible.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross - In Motion - Modular synthesizer cover

Published on Mar 3, 2019 joeSeggiola

"From The Social Network ‎original soundtrack (2010, The Null Corporation).

I was trying to recreate the easiest parts of my favorite track from The Social Network's OST in my modular system. It soon became an exercise in using all the modules simultaneously. Recorded in February 2019.

Both drum sounds are created feeding signals from MFB OSC-3 into LxD vactrols, which are opened with Maths envelopes; the kick drum is a pitch-modulated triangle wave, the hat is from the white noise output. Intellijel Shifty is used like a gate sequencer to alternate kick/hat triggering. Two segments from Mutable Instruments Stages are used as faders for controlling drums' volume in Veils.

The bass sound is made with the Minibrute 2 using two saw oscillators one octave apart, with the LP filter controlled by an AD envelope from Stages. Pitch CV is manually triggered tapping buttons on the Korg SQ-1 in "step jump" mode; CV Out is sent to the SSF Modbox S&H for tempo quantization and to a slew-limiter made with Stages for slight portamento. The Minibrute mod-wheel is patched to increase the decay time of VCA and VCF envelopes, so it can be used to gradually control legato.

The 64-notes arpeggio is a square wave from MFB OSC-3, sequenced with the Minibrute (whose pitch CV is free to be used since does not control the on-board bass sound) and filtered with Bastl Cinnamon. A button on the second SQ-1 track is used to control Veils to un-mute the arpeggio at will. Digitech Obscura Altered Delay's mix and repeat controls are used to create the messy ending.

The piano-like long notes are pre-recorded in the Morphagene. A "distortion effect" is applied in real-time using the Minibrute's metalizer wavefolder, modulated by Morphagene's envelope follower. The sample doesn't loop, it's triggered using clock divisions.

Everything is mixed and sent through three guitar pedals: OBNE Dark Star for shim reverb, then a little room reverb and a compressor at the end."
