February Filter Sweep YouTube Protest & a Call to any YouTube / Google Employees
Youtube claimed copyright on a synth filter sweep video by ranzee
"I can't believe we are now getting copyright claims just for performing tests on synths! Yep - all I did was a filter sweep - and BAM! Copyright Claim police came on in and took my video away (partially) from the world. This is ludicrous!"
This one was sent my way via supporting member, Synth Addict.
For those not aware, YouTube has algorithms that scan audio in videos for copyright infringement. If something is found in violation, the video is automatically unpublished. The problem? Apparently certain filter sweeps are triggering take downs. This is becoming a problem for synth demos (per ranzee above, and previously mentioned here for example). I am curious what sample is being used for the comparison. Rush's Tom Sawyer? :) Actually, Synth Addict mentioned it being a Chemical Brothers track, which does sound familiar. Anyway, if anyone out there reading this has any connections, maybe you can reach out to someone that can fix this?
For the rest of us, not sure how the following will help, but if anything it will bring some attention to the problem amongst the synth community.
via Synth Addict:
"What users can do:
Post a video on YouTube of yourself demonstrating a filter sweep on a synth or synths of your choice and tag it #FFS
Attached image created by Andrew Brooks on FB [the image directly above, in this post], as a joint effort with the chat community of Pro Synth Network, GEO Synths, and SonicState.

Jean-Michel Jarre Live Synths and a MATRIXSYNTH Baseball Cap
This one in via Synth Addict:
"A great Jarre show a couple of weeks ago in Berkeley, with lots of analog goodness and lasers.
ARP 2500 and many more synths were spotted.
In the souvenir area, the most coveted item wasn't for sale. :-)"
Nice MATRIXSYNTH hat! That would be Synth Addict's, not JMJ of course. He's never asked me for one. :) Cool to know it was at the show! Thank you Synth Addict!
Quick Note: the baseball cap was actually made by Synth Addict. The ones for $10 supporters of the site are a different design as you can see here. Just want to be sure anyone that does sign up for the cap, knows which one they are getting.

Freqing Out- by FSD (A love song for TSF)
YouTube via FatSynthDude | September 18, 2010
Hmm... I'm guessing TSF is obviously TheSynthFreq. This post gets credit for the Synth Romance label, although the first post I believe goes to synthfrau aka synthiefrau on YouTube. No, love for synths does not count otherwise every single post would get the label. Video description from FatSynthDude on YouTube:
"Nothing too fancy going on here. This was all done in one take, so it's a little sloppy. (I never said I was a great musician and I definitely never said I was good at copping the styles of the 80's!) Just a little something in tribute to a very entertaining decade as well as to everybody's favorite 80's synth addict. ;-)
I tried to be as authentic to the decade as possible in regards to synths, however a lot of my gadgets (especially drum machines, mixers, and effects) were made in the 90's or the 00's. :-(
Vermona DRM-1 mkIII - Drums
Sequential Pro One - Bass
Akai AX60 - Pads
Siel DK600 - Lead (kinda buried in this mix)
Prophet 600 - Sync synth line the guitar is playing
Schecter Devil Elite - The guitar itself
Line 6 Pod X3 Pro - Guitar effects
Roland GR-30 - Guitar to MIDI converter
I've actually got two mixes of this song with the one in the video being the latter of the two. The original version was mixed while it was recording, was sent through some hardware effects processors, and sent to tape. The mix in the video came about because of a little happy accident in recording. The StudioLives allow me to archive everything to the computer, so I make it a habit of recording EVERYTHING. In the process of this, I was recording the signal coming out of the guitar through the Pod in case I decided later to send the guitar through a different synth or just wanted to correct something with the synth line later (hooray for audio-MIDI conversion!) I accidentally left the amp simulation switched on and I happened to like the result. I remixed the whole thing in Reaper with software effects, turned the Prophet 600 down in the mix, and put the guitar track over it so that the sync sound is more like an effect.
Also, because the patch being used on the Prophet 600 is in unison mode, and guitar to MIDI conversion is finicky, the P600 doesn't always trigger when it's supposed to. Kind of a neat effect in this context, imo.
Hope you all like it, and if you don't, keep it to yourselves because my skin is thinner than paper. :-D
...I just noticed that you can make out Audrey Hepburn's reflection in my guitar during certain points of the vid. XD"

Aquifex - Roli Equator 2 MPE live jams with multi-looper
"Demos of new Equator 2 with only MPE patches - played live into a multi-looper and mixed live while playing another part to a stereo recorder - I ran out of loops. :-) The live nature give rise to mistakes and a human feel... I upgraded my Roli Equator app to v.2 during CyberWeek and was inspired to make a couple of “soundtracky” demos with only Equator 2 MPE patches. In case you didn't know, Equator 1 and 2 have non-MPE patches of you need them."
These are in via supporting member, Synth Addict. Nice hat and website! :)

MATRIXSYNTH Cap at Alessandro Cortini and Richard Devine Public Works SF Performance
Nice pic in via Synth Addict :)
"Hell of a show on Sat.night in SF, and the Matrixsynth custom cap was representing. I saw several Matrixsynth official t-shirts there as well.
We are legion... :-)
Cortini had a great Buchla, etc. set synced with some very artistic videos.
Devine was sheer madness, as expected."
And for those of you more interested in the performance (sheesh!), Synth Addict took some video but has yet to review and upload them. "Videos will be posted soon if they actually turned out OK."
Note this is a custom hat and I do like it! You can find a smaller font military style hat here, original baseball cap here, and finally, a trucker hat here. More MATRIXSYNTH bling here.

Aquifex - Reface DX live looper jam (one synth, all parts)
"Another of my 'one synths/all parts' demos. MIDI assist from Theoryboard (some chord variations) and Keystep (perc arps).
All layers played by hand into a multi-looper and remixed live to a stereo recorder.
The Reface DX has amazing sound and realtime timbre control for a 4-op synth. Some patches sound like 6-op patches, as in a DX-7."

Synth guru HanzVolt interview with demos of his #KorgMonopoly, #YamahaCS30 and #Altair231
video upload by HanzVolt
"My buddy who owns @JMLRecording wanted to interview me...Idk I'm just a hopeless synth addict who has had hardware synths since '99. Synthesizers are not just tools in my eyes, they have certain organic qualities.. Yeah I need helpπ. Also Im considered a bit of a synth snob and thats ok. I probably am. Ive tried to represent most types of synthesis out there in my collection."

SYB-5 solo
YouTube via kulten
"The BOSS SYB-5 bass synth trigged by its own feedback, by Kulten the SYB synth addict !
I use the 2 "LFO modes" with "Square" sound (mode 6) and "Saw" sound (mode 3). Works good with the SYB-5 and not with the SYB-3 : the SYB-3 don't have LFO.
I often do that in concert. Actually, I already did a gig only with my SYB-5 (ambiant/indus), and another only with the SYB-3 and my DR-110 drum machine (electro/indus). But most of the time I play with both SYB on stage."

Modular & Custom MATRIXSYNTH Hat
via Synth Addict
"I'm going further down the synth rabbit hole, and modular is the gravity well dragging me in. :-)
This is a current setup from a recent modular jam, and in the end the recording wasn't very good unfortunately.
However I always have my Matrixsynth custom hat handy for inspiration, and I keep plugging away... semper synthetic!"
P.S. You might recognize the hat from this previous post.

Stanford CCRMA open house, day 1
video upload by SynthAddict
The above is a walkthrough of a Stanford CCRMA open house from Thursday the 16th by supporing member SynthAddict. Take a look at what he walks into when he enters the building. A Yamaha GS1 with working voice programmer. The GS1 was the first commercial FM synthesizer released in 1980, three years prior to the DX7. John Chowning, discoverer of FM synthesis performed that night. According to SynthAddict: "The Chowning curated show last night was very eye opening - so much cool electronic music even going back to the 60s and it was digital."
And below :) "Today I got a shot of the Yamaha power synth stack in the lobby, with the best baseball cap on top. π"

Update: looks like the stream was here: https://ccrma.stanford.edu/live/. It's not working for me at the moment, but feel free to check and comment if it works for you.

Essential Retro
Looks like James Grahame of Retro Thing has a book out and... it has synth. : ) Title link takes you there (scroll down the page to see what's in the book). Looks like a fascinating trip down memory lane as well as current retro design. Very cool. Would make a great stocking stuffer. Congrats James!

"My new book is entitled Essential Retro: The Vintage Technology Guide. It covers a few hundred of my favorite vintage and vintage-style gadgets.
Since I'm a synth addict, there's an entire chapter dedicated to electronic musical instruments. I start with a look at some classics like the ARP Odyssey and Sequential Circuits Prophet 5, but I couldn't resist including a few modern 'vintage analog' devices from Dave Smith, Clavia, and even the real analog growl of the Alesis A6 Andromeda.
Check out www.essentialretro.com for more details. People can buy signed copies direct from the site, and it should be available on Amazon in the USA and UK early next week. Priced at $19.95 in the USA, £11.95 in the UK."

Aquifex - Modular and OP-Z jam 11-23-20
SynthAddict
"Quick experiment with a tempo locked rhythm and a wild snare and off tempo arp. As the beat comes around they sync up, get a little wild, and sync up again. Fun to try but YMMV. :-)
Used some new modules including a Plaits clone, Gyrinx VCF (Synton Syrinx filter bank), Grids, and some classics like Morphagene and Clouds with various modulation bits. That WMD Geiger Counter is a noisy bugger, but fun."
Note that is a custom MATRIXSYNTH hat by SynthAddict. It looks good! :)
