YOLA: GMXE Instruments - Beijing Modular 26

"We spoke to Shawn from GMXE Instruments about *YOLA*, a new modular MPE controller system built around a desktop control unit and interchangeable modules.

YOLA uses capacitive multi-touch control for up to eight fingers, with movement available across multiple directions. The desktop unit works with different module types, including CV output modules for banana or Eurorack connections, plus a synth voice module with its own display. The voice uses its own algorithm and includes effects, with FX1 and FX2 offering choices such as delay and reverb. Routing can be changed from the unit.

A sequencer module records sequences, and the controller can work with modular hardware via CV or with software via MPE MIDI, including Ableton Live. A pin-out system connects the modules, and a later cable setup is planned for connecting up to five different modules.

YOLA is expected around December, with worldwide sales planned. The main unit is expected to cost around $700, with modules roughly between $100 and $150.

"apologies for the crappy sound demo in the video, btw - we were having power issues with our recording setup and the sound is very sub-par - live in the room it sounds great!

Mandy aka Jungle of Wires gave us a look at her compact live modular system, which she brought for ambient, techno and Dolby Atmos performances. She explained that the aim was to fit as much varied sound as possible into a small case.

The rack includes a Chaos mixer/VCA, a This Is Not Rocket Science Bob and Steve reverb/delay, a Knobula PolyCinematic for synth-wave textures, Manis Iteritas for plucks and bass parts, and Marbles as the main sequencer. Pamela also handles timing duties, with different patching for the techno set.

She demonstrated the ambient patch with Bob and Steve handling the reverb processing, while the S-4 sits at the end of the chain and adds samples. For techno, the patch changes focus toward kick, hi-hat, percussion and bass.

Three oscillators, a ladder filter and plenty of body
Each block of the Minimoog panel has its place on the FM-1's 240 × 240 screen, with four real knobs to play it for real.

Oscillator bank
Three oscillators with ranges from LO to 2', a waveform each, independent detune on oscillators 2 and 3 and a touch of pitch drift, like analog VCOs.

Ladder filter
A four-pole ladder, 24 dB/octave, with saturation in every stage and the feedback lag of the Minimoog circuit. From emphasis 8 up it self-oscillates as a pure sine that follows the keyboard at 1 V/octave. Cutoff reads -5 to +5, as on the panel.

Contours
Two contours (filter and loudness) with attack, decay and sustain. The attack is exponential, like the original circuit. Glide, LFO and modulation complete the section.

100 presets
Ten groups of ten: a showcase of styles, hard leads, soft leads, basses, pads and strings, brass, plucks, keys, atmospheres and sound effects. About a quarter comes with the arpeggiator already on. Save your own in 32 user slots.

Arpeggiator and sequencer
One tap on ARP turns it on and off; holding it sets HOLD. The sequencer records up to 16 notes (REC) and plays them (PLAY). The key LEDs light with the notes.

Effects per preset
Reverb, delay, chorus and drive, each preset with its own combination, so basses, leads and pads live in very different spaces."

TED-8 is the Oberheim TEO-5 as a plugin, built from thousands of measurements of a real unit. Every knob, every curve and every effect was recorded, compared and tuned until the plugin and the hardware sounded the same side by side. Then we gave it three more voices, a Poly Unison mode that stacks up to 6 voices on each of 8 notes (48 voices at once), a full modulation matrix and a cable to the real thing, so TED-8 works on its own in your DAW or as the editor and librarian for the TEO-5 on your desk.

HOW WE MODELED IT

TED-8 How we modeled it We started with a TEO-5 on the bench and a lot of patience. One note at a time, one knob step at a time, we recorded what the unit actually does: how far the filter moves per step, how the envelopes curve, how fast each LFO setting runs, how each effect colors the sound. TED-8 follows those recordings rather than a datasheet, so a patch you dial in feels and responds the way it does on the hardware.

The little imperfections came along too. Each voice sits a few cents apart and a touch louder or softer than its neighbour, the way the voices of the unit do, so chords breathe instead of sounding cloned.

"My kids are why I made this. I wanted a synth they could pick up and play without getting lost in menus, so I built Gnomad, a free firmware for the M-VAVE FM-1. Sounds are pictures, the knobs are colour coded, and a little gnome sings along. There's an iPhone/iPad app on the way too, with lessons built in."

"What's different about it

There are plenty of FM-1 firmwares. This one is built to be easy, so it works for kids and for adults who have never touched a synth.

EASY mode, in pictures. Turn one knob and you pick a picture: the Gnome, organ, bells, laser, whale, choir, cloud, piano, funny sounds or drums. That's 10 pictures and 57 sounds, and you don't have to be able to read to find one.

Four coloured knobs (blue, green, yellow, vermilion) that shape the sound you picked. Each sound gives its knobs their own jobs, and the screen names each job in the knob's colour. You can't turn them wrong. If something sounds odd, turn it back.

The Gnome sings. Each key gets its own syllable.

Grooves. Five ready-made loops (Head Nod, Floor Filler, Rainy Desk, Night Bus, Sky Garden) to play along with or build on. Keys 6 to 9 hold your own four saved songs.

Record a loop. Press REC and then PLAY, wait for the 4-3-2-1 count-in, and play. It goes round and round. Hold SAVE to undo, and the screen tells you what it took off.

Play it live. Hold PLAY and the loop restarts on the next bar. Press GLO + PLAY and it stops at the end of the bar. Hold GLO and play keys for a fill, or hold FX and play keys to try a sound without recording it.

Advanced mode is still there. Hold HOME + SAVE for 2 seconds to switch between the two modes. You get four tracks, a step sequencer, effects, MIDI over USB and TRS, and every page of the synth. Your music stays as it is.

We also added LOOPS mode, which sets a tempo from the first loop's length, and then allows you to record, load and manipulate loops, all while staying sync'd up. In this video I record very basic loops, load a drum beat from the library, then transform them into something entirely different.

With its flexible sound engine, the JUPITER-08 is a highly capable musical tool. By default, the synth is set for a retro experience with the eight-part/two-voice architecture of the original JUPITER-8, but users can internally expand the polyphony to 32 voices to meet modern playing needs and craft all-new tonalities. With refined voice allocation and pitch behavior, the JUPITER-08 provides a rich, animated playing experience with enhanced polyphonic performance and genuine vintage-inspired character.

The JUPITER-08 comes equipped with a two-part, 64-step polyphonic sequencer and an arpeggio function, ready to capture ideas and build dynamic, evolving sounds on the fly. Onboard processing is also available for extensive sound shaping and spatial enhancement. Users can tap into 17 unique effects—including chorus and MFX—plus dedicated delay and a reverb with five types and a unique shimmer mode.

n/vision Wavetable Synthesizer

n/vision is a small yet mighty synthesizer that elevates classic wavetable synthesis with advanced Roland sound-shaping techniques. Newly developed for the Roland Boutique series, it delivers a powerful platform for crafting rich tonalities and evolving textures, offering hands-on control for immediate creative interaction and deep menu-driven tools for sophisticated sound design.

Powered by Roland’s latest sound advancements, n/vision allows players to build evocative textures through a tactile synthesizer workflow. Users can easily blend and shape two wavetable layers to create animated movement, moving pads, aggressive leads, complex timbres, and more.

Multiple modulation sources can influence wavetable position, layer balance, pitch, and shaping parameters, enabling highly dynamic sound movement. Roland’s innovative wave-shaper technology transforms incoming waveforms through non-linear processing, generating new harmonics and unique textures that go beyond the capabilities of traditional wavetable synthesis.

n/vision’s top-level interface supports immediate sound creation, but users can dive much deeper if they want. Olydian VC-01 Vocal Synthesizer - Brooklyn SPEXPO 26

"Kyle from Olydian Music gave us a look at VC-01 Voicecrafter - a hardware vocal synthesizer with 380 selectable syllables. A touchpad selects syllables, and the keyboard plays them, with MIDI functionality also included. The instrument has two engines: a sample engine based on recordings of sung syllables, and a synthesis engine that uses wavetables and filters to imitate the human voice. The engines can be blended, with reverb and delay available.

The mixer section controls synth/sample balance, consonant/vowel mix, and consonant length. ADSR controls apply to either engine, and glide handles portamento. The sequencer allows entry of notes, live syllable editing, octave and tempo changes, loop point adjustment, and rests.

Engine-specific effects include sample chop, filter, and an autotune crossfade between processed and unprocessed sample versions. Pre-orders are planned soon, with availability next year and pricing expected around $2,000–$2,500.

Cast Away (Elektron Digitone // MFB Tanzbar // Roland S-1 // Teenage Engineering KO Sidekick EP 136)

"1 track, 3 machines, a little over 5 minutes. 🎛️

Back with the same setup as *Live at Home 2*: the Elektron Digitone, MFB Tanzbär and Roland S-1. This time, though, it's one continuous piece rather than a collection of patterns and ideas.

All three instruments are connected to the **Teenage Engineering KO II Sidekick EP-136**:
Channel 1: MFB Tanzbär - punchy analog drums
Channel 2: Elektron Digitone - all the synth parts, plus some FM percussion
AUX input: Roland S-1 - Bass

The MIDI chain is pretty straightforward: Digitone to S-1 to Tanzbär.
The Digitone sequences the S-1, while the Tanzbär runs its own internal sequencer.

Things get a little more… unpredictable during the second half of the track, where I start playing around with the Sidekick's Loop effect to create all sorts of drum breaks.

It was an absolute pleasure to play with - perhaps a little too much of a pleasure, judging by how often I kept using it! 😄

But hey, sometimes you find an effect that makes you want to keep pushing it just a little further.
