ESQ-1 Let's Patch! | Live Sound Design Session | Vintage Hybrid Synth (1986) | Process Walkthrough

video upload by Dr. Synthy Pants

"Thanks to channel supporter ⁨@AlisonWilder⁩ for suggesting this real-time sound design session format for ye ol' gear tubes!

Vintage synths are magical for many reasons... not least is that they were designed with strict hardware limitations that forced the makers to invent clever solutions to difficult problems while keeping costs LOW!

(come to think of it, this may not be unique to vintage synths... I digress.) ::ahem:: Designing through those solutions is kinda like uncovering a time capsule of brilliant thinking and interesting sonic possibilities.

Maybe it IS true! Are we really only limited by our imaginations? Let's find out with Dr. Synthy Pants!"

Programming is similar to the ASM Hydrasynth.

RK-008 MIDI FX : The MIDI Delay

video upload by Retrokits

"MIDI Delay is an effect from 'Ye olden MIDI days' to emulate a hardware audio delay with a timed note repeat. You can change the note's velocity and note increment per repeat. And the cool thing: It's always synced to the beat!

In this video I combine with another new MIDI FX called 'Note 2 CC' Which can transform MIDI note messages and convert it to a value for a MIDI Controller (like filters or volume, .. ). It's a 'midi-event-converter' which is also used on the RK002/MOD firmware. An example is to add extra expression to various synths which do not have velocity response by default but you can also use it to for example play a volume gate pattern solely with notes.

There are nice effects on their own but can be combined to create something completely new - and - hopefully inspiring."

Patch Notes: Alex Epton

video by FACTmagazine

"Alex Epton is a multifaceted producer and composer (also known as XXXChange), whose in-house role at XL Recordings has seen him work with FKA twigs, Arca and Jamie xx.. IN 2019 he collaborated with cellist Lucinda Chua on the soundtrack for the documentary film 3OHA.

Epton’s own personal studio practice focuses heavily on hardware, including modular synthesis and tape loops. In this episode of Patch Notes, recorded ahead of the release of his new EP The Episodic Buffer Vol 2, he creates an experimental piece with a selection of Verbos Electronics modules and touchplate controller together with manipulated vocals.

“Iʼm not using any fancy loop length randomization here on this patch although thereʼs some clips of that implementation on my Instagram,” Epton says. “Also the Verbos Electronics YouYube page has a well explained example of how to set that up.”

“The basic set up here is: Row A – CV out hits voltage scaling then into a quantiser locking it to an arbitrary major scale then into the v/oct input on oscillator A. Row B – CV out hits voltage scaling then into a quantiser, chromatic this time, then into the v/oct input on oscillator B.”

“Each channel of control voyage processor has an input for additional voltage to be added to the sequencer control voltage. This is our first transpose input. Here both sequences are transposed by the master variable CV out on the touch plate keyboard.”

“Thereʼs a second transpose input for oscillator B on the secondary CV in on that oscillator. You can see in the video itʼs got tape on it because the attenuvertor knob that scales this input is super sensitive and prone to accidental nudging. This second layer of CV transposition Iʼm using to drop oscillator Bʼs pitch to make some tension harmonies agains the main sequence. These tension notes are linked to three individual gate outputs on the touch plate keyboard. Those are summed together before they hit the attenuvertor.”

“So with this set up Iʼm happy to have only eight steps because thereʼs a lot of variety that can still be achieved. Also some interesting chromaticism can happen in the harmony when the one CV stream is quantised chromatic VS locked to a scale. A few individual gate outs on the top of the sequencer are summed together to trigger the drum that comes in midway through.”

“Thatʼs pretty much it. I used a tape loop of some manipulated vocals to get some extra atmosphere / randomness going – something to react to. That loop is manipulated through the rooms. Everything comes together at ye olde Sony 8 channel mixer. And recorded into a UA Apollo twin. Also the synth outputs are feeding an oscilloscope in X/Y config.”

The Episodic Buffer Vol 2 is released on May 7. Epton has also created an exploratory video game as a companion piece to the EP, in which you guide a six-limbed being through a psychedelic world.

Ping-Ping Pong - A Supercritical Neutron Flux study

Supercritical Synthesizers

"I tried to think of the cheapest trick in the modular synthesizer cookbook. Well, the cheapest trick without Rick Nielsen.

Space. Not that fancy let’s-grab-a-bite-of-that-asteroid-while-we’re-there modern space exploration. The ye-olde-paper-mache-flying-saucers type sci-fi. In Finnish we’d use the word ”Pulputus” which means a sort of a bubbling sound but far more useless. The right kind of useless.

Filter pings! Oh what fun with the Liquid 4 pole setting. This patch has a LFO modulating the Antumbra Knit (a miniature Mutable Instruments Plaits) which has a single low frequency saw wave triggering the filter pings. Both cores of the filter are in use and spread with the stereo control.

After the filter it goes to a miniature Clouds. My own hacked kinda-kammerl-parasites firmware. Only verb this time from it. Then it’s routed to the miniature parasite Warps. Tape echo there. Holy mackerel it sounds good!

Oh the ring? The nice folks at Iceland’s Genki Instruments sent us a couple of their products. The Wave ring’s rotation movement controls the filter FM and the gate starts and stops the tape. Controlled directly from the Wavefront module. Ég tala ekki íslensku but damn this thing is expressive and easy to use. You’ll see more of this in our demos later.

-Heikki

Fairlight CMI IIX Vintage Additive Digital Synthesizer Sampler Working

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This system is ready to make music. No excuses. No more work is needed to be done from a musician's standpoint. It functions reliably and is a joy to own and play. The light pen works great etc. If you buy the system you will get the FULL Fairlight experience with no work arounds. (Unless you consider a floppy emulator a workaround, it is a godsend to me.)

The keyboard is from a series 1, so it has the airy light synth action. It is still touch sensitive like the series II, but has the synthy action.

Both 8 inch drives have been removed and replaced with a custom dual floppy emulator.

The connections for the 8" drives are still there and work. The original floppy card has been modded so you can run the emulator and the old drive at the same time. If you have a couple of old YE data drives you can easily install them and will never have to remove the floppy emulator connection..."

Note the one of the images of the monitor matches the image in this previous post.

14 Dublins: my next-to-last song (with Korg Gadget) by Roikat

Published on Feb 28, 2019 Roikat

"Korg's release of Gadget 2 arrived just as I was finishing two videos for tracks made with the original Gadget, once again foiling my attempts to create timely, topical content for ye olde interwebs. This track started as an experiment to see how many Dublin synth Gadgets my primordial iPad 3 could play before running out of steam. The answer was 8. I added 6 more Dublin tracks on my 2015 iPod Touch, which actually didn't max out at the 14 Dublins, but I thought the tune seemed "finished" at 14."
